What makes someone a good Dressage rider? Do you aspire to become a better rider? Here are 3 things to work on that ALL the top riders in this sport (Steffen Peters, Charlotte Dujardin, and Catherine Dufor) have in common.
    1. Your Seat - The main function of your seat is to absorb the motion of your horses’ movement. Your seat must stay connected to the saddle at all times and move in perfect harmony with the horse. All the top riders in this sport have amazing seats!!
    2. Symmetry - Dressage requires that the horse be straight and symmetrical. This means that we, too must be straight and symmetrical. It is impossible to expect the horse to be straight when the rider is crooked. It is absolutely essential that as riders we exercise and work on straightness and symmetry.
    3. Independent Aids - To be an effective rider, you must be able to ISOLATE your aids. This means, give a leg aid without pulling on the reins. Or use your reins without looking up the seat. The ability to isolate and control your aids is essential.
If you’re interested in studying the details of correct rider position and learning specific unmounted group exercises to improve your riding sign up for my online course - “Dressage Rider Position: A 6 Week Masterclass to Transform your Riding Position” Course Starts November 1st!!

What's your biggest rider position flaw?

For me: my lower legs and left shoulder 😩

My toes go outward, that's why I have a loose grip

My lower leg moves, finding it hard to keep inline with my hip.

Independent seat (or lack there of 😅) and I tend to clinch with my lower leg and lift my heel

      Lack of independent leg aids.

Everything! My head is the worst thing...worrying about everything I do instead of feeling the horse. Had a chance to get a friend to longe me and I closed my eyes to really get out of my head and tune in to the horse and it was so great! Also I found out that I ride so much better without my hands!!! Ugh... lots of work to do! 😁

I wanted to reach out and say that you inspire me so much! I work on a regular basis with a trainer but it’s always nice to have something to watch and motivate. I have a very difficult horse to ride that constantly questions in my ability and I think it’s so important to constantly try to improve myself as a rider. I I think you are very talented and love that you’re willing to help, thank you so very much for that!

Even. If your not a dressage rider I think self discipline is. Important just to get the best out of your horse. I've been watching your videos for awhile and notice I put more thought into my riding. Thank you Amelia and Happy 🏇 New Year.

I realized that I have to pay attention to what muscles I relax and which I need to engage for a specific task to avoid over tensing my entire hip, back, butt area. Due to an assortment of injuries, as well as arthritis, I have been to a physiotherapist several times, which helped me identify lopsidedness and weaknesses. For example, I realized that a growing tendency to lose my right stirrup was related to tightness on that side. On those days when I feel too tired to go through exercises and stretching etc I think about how I would feel if I was not able to ride due to pain and boy is that a motivator to drag out that mat and weights. 😊

Hi, thanks for thé super vidéos 👍 I am also left handed by the way 😊 I find that Ashtanga Yoga is excellent training for rider strength and flexibility and that it helps balancing my body. On rider position I easily lose independence of the aids when there is a lot going on and I try too hard. Going back to basics- inside reign outside leg helps me focus

When I was little my grandmother from Austria was visiting and she saw me write with my left hand on paper at the kitchen table , and my right hand on the chalkboard that was on the wall . She thought there was something wrong with me 🤣. So I’m pretty much both always have been.

Single biggest improvement to my position - getting (and keeping) my horse forward in self-carriage. Not actually a position problem at all... Something that few people seem to point out is that if your horse is not forward and you are having to use constant leg (nudging, scrubbing, gripping, bopping, nagging every stride), your position is necessarily rubbish. Obviously I don't ride a super-sensitive immaculately trained GP horse like Amelia's! :) But when my horse is forward in self-carriage, THEN suddenly I can lengthen my leg, I can quieten my hand, I can isolate my seat... So I think yes, position is a great thing to work on, but it will be pointless unless your horse is forward. Forward first, or get off.

this truly a fantastic point! I ride two horses at each end of the scale as far as willing to move freely forward and the "ride" on each of them is very different. Iam going to keep in mind exactly what you have pointed out ...

Two things....one, my trainer tonight had me assess my position at each letter. Just a sort of mental note to check how my position is. Thought that was a good tip. And two, LOL! I can’t seem to ask for the canter and keep my inside leg still. I feel like I’m rubbing my stomach, patting my head, hopping on one foot while doing backbends. You are so right. INDEPENDENT aids.....now if only my body would comply. 🤣
