This rare Dodge spent 9 years in storage before Nick got his hands on it. Tonight, he's going to stay at the shop after closing time and see if he can get the 340 to turn over.

My Challenger T/A was found having sat in a barn for more than 35 years, just a few years ago. A professional restorer from another state called and reported having found it. Mine was plum crazy purple with the houndstooth interior. I didn't own the car new but I bought it Back in 77 and it was my high school car. It amazed me that it had been setting all those years in a barn within 25 miles of my house where I currently live LOL. While I was happy it was found and being restored and I'm sure by now it is completed, there wasn't a chance to purchase the car. The guy was looking to max out his money and nothing else. Still, my satisfaction knowing that it lives on. Always like seeing programs about these cars, brings back so many Street memories.
Nick there were around 989 4speeds manufactured and the rest of the T/A's were automatic for a total of about 2400 made that makes this car even sweeter. If it's all matching numbers keep it original.

andrew rey ... get the 68. 340 manual tranny cam which gave a very distinctive rummpty exhaust sound owing to the wilder cam duration... had one 68 barracuda 340 , 4 speed. loved it.
andrew rey i think its ok car but a 1969 boss 429 mustang with a 4 speed would DE-STROY! that dodge
+ James 1969 429 Boss mustangs are really over rated. they were made to homogenize the 429 boos engine for Nascar use. the 429 Boss motor really shines on a circle track, but they are a fat pig in the mustang. they only quarter mile around 13.8-14.0 depending on the driver and track. the Boss 302 and Boss 351 were actually faster. also that car is a 340 6 pack T/A car. its meant for road racing. so it should quarter mile around 14.3-14.5. so its not that much slower than the 429 mustang. the mustang would beat it in the quart mile but not by much. on a road coarse, which is what the T/A was designed for, the Challenger T/A would eat the 429 mustang alive. a better comparison would be 429 mustang vs 426 hemi challenger or a 1969 Camaro COPO 427. just for reference those both quarter around 13.5.

I'm going to try and get my uncle's '78 Magnum with 360 engine running after being in storage since 1997 (22 years ago). After seeing you put gas in the tank and carb and then get it started, I'm a little relieved that this might just work. Comments welcome.

Near and dear to my heart. I restored a Sublime green T/A back in the late 1980s. Years later, I'm still trying to figure out why I sold it.

My father was a big wig at Chrysler and always drove new cars, he told head office he was tired of driving land yachts and next time send him"something" that had some gut's. This is what he got!, I became the most popular kid with the coolest dad on our block. What a beast!, and it never ran right because of the triple carb setup, it eventually went into service 3 times to get the carburation right, on the third try it had stay overnight.Someone broke into the compound and stripped her down to the hubs,that was the last I ever saw of that car, but was soon replaced by a Charger 440 RT my status on the block was intact. I do know that it eventually was returned to a dealership for sale as used and that some kid with money and no brains bought it and soon after rolled and totalled it. There were a few more down the line but none had the guts these 2 had

BS story. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. First your "dad" would have to order his own vehicle. Its called a BPU (business purpose use) and he could only order whats available on the BPU approved list. Second, the the car would have been registered to American Chrysler as shown on the ownership, thus it would be sold to a dealer as a factory demo. And, there is no way a hot selling car/rare model/hard to resale would be on the BPU list.

That comment in the video literally had me saying out loud "are you kidding me?" As if!! "Ok it wont start so I guess we have lost all our money". If it won't start Nick would just work on it and get it started. What a great find he has there. I wonder what he ended up paying for it. Would not have been cheap!

This ones a bit of torture for me, as a young kid when these were around, I wanted one in a way that burned inside. A couple tips from a old car guy, when starting something that's sat for a very long time(longer than this one even) drip some marvel mystery oil into the plug holes, you can clean the plugs while your doing it. Then to fill the carb(s) use some Trufuel 50-1 mix, it's a quality high octane mix, and the oil in it will provide upper lubrication which will help free any sticky rings, and stop any scoring of pistons and cylinder walls. It really does make a difference.

Prelubing is nice too, but a hassle with the distributor occasionally.
An old shop I worked at, the boss rigged up a metal 2 gallon container with a couple of hoses.
One hose for air pressure and the other was plumbed to the oil pressure sender or an easily accessible galley plug.
Put 30psi of air to a full can of oil and let it rip!
Pop the plug in and light it off.
the oil doesn’t have time to run off as you fidget around with the dizzy.
And you can rotate it a little to assure the oil got thru all the passages.
I hope none of these classics were every scrapped or dismantled. They so need to be restored for future generations to at least see.. Monster TLC for an American icon.
My friend had a 340 TA in high school. These are legit screamers! Very rare car.
Leave it all original, restore it? OK, but to original T/A factory condition. Find a 318 car for the Hemi. This thing is awesome.

I would say keep the 340 with the 6 pack. A car worth restoring.
I would pull the engine, drop a 4 cyl Plymoth Horizion engine in the car, and paint it pink with purple flowers.

That's what I thought. There are plenty of /6 and 318 cars for the HEMI.
I wouldn't put a HEMI in this. The 340 six pack is perfect for the Challenger T/A's.

340's eats fuel like a big block. Good engine. Had one 340 in a 70 duster.

This and the AAR CUDA ARE MY dream cars,I had my hands on a real AAR but own a 70 challenger SE and u couldn't get me back in a cuda ,but recently a very good friend just finished a big restoration on a TA and I was lucky enough to help him get the right parts,I forget u have to option all the R/T stuff one by one dash etc...I would have though a rally dash would go standard with a TA,well anyway I was lucky enuf not to drive the brand new 340 six pack but to start it and listen to the engine purr for a little warmed it up,what a beast,supposedly the TA is 410 horsepower for a small block that serious,it was a fire breathing dragon when it fired up it was bad to the bone,and I was walking on sunshine I was high as a kite from it,and thank full.

Definitely keep it original. An old T/A, that even after 9 years of sitting just needed a change of oil and fresh gas. Even drove itself on the lift. Challenger T/A 340 with a manual, keep that thing as it is! Find something else like a 318 or 360 car to drop in your Hemi

I had a 70 RT charger with a 340 (originally a 383 that blew) and it was faster then my friends big block GTX. Great small block.
Back in the 80's I bought a 1965 fury with a 426 Wedge and dual quads stock, the car was black with the center of the chrome strip painted red and Crager SS wheels on it.
I rebuilt it using Mopar's Direct Connection catalog. Man those were the days.
It had a New Process A833 and posi rear end. The people I bought it from had a room
full of trophy's from Fremont Dragstrip, she worked at Pittsburg chrysler-plymouth
and custom ordered it with what I mentioned and a radio delete plate and nothing else
no power anything, and it was a bench seat 4-speed car. Would love to have it back!

Nice car Nick.. my vote is to definitely restore OEM! Every car has its personality and fun to drive. The lighter 340 will be a better handling car than let's say a 426 Hemi. (yeah we know the Hemi is a beast)
Short story: When I was a freshman in college in 1976, my roommate drove us to 7 AM class (way too early for me) He drove a 68 (I believe a 68) AMC Javelin, the pony car model with the simple body line... white with a blue stripe. It had a small v8, not 13 second car. What was FUN about this car.. Dean was a maniac. We lived through it, but being young I wasn't worried, cause he was a good driver. Well.. in city limits he did 60-70 mph jumps. This car caught air and every time did 4 wheel landings, never bottomed out..... the high speed shuttle to class! (never late) haha!
Sometimes a stock model can do fun stuff the tricked out car can't.
My 69 GTO would've killed it in a straight line, but even that would not have gotten us to class faster than that little Javelin.
Try doing that with a 426 Hemi ... not happenin!

Hi Nick I just bought a 1965 plymouth beledere 11 426 hemi with stagered 2 4 barrels starts up but runs really rich , I hope its nothing to bad, I wish you where closer to me IAm in Ann Arbor Mich but I watch you show all the time ,maybe one day i will make it to your side of town but until then keep up the good work

Ever since I was a kid, I always thought these were the meanest looking cars out there.
That grill, the hood scoops, the curves. The '70 Challenger just screamed "I will eat you".
I remember building one of them as a monogram model as a kid back in the 80s, I always dug that car.

I own a 69 440 6 BBL ROAD RUNNER AND A 1970 RT/SE 440 CHARGER. RUNNER HAS RUN A BEST OF 9.01 AND CHARGER 10.22.
GROWING UP ( 1979-1985) HAD 2 BUDDIES WITH 340 CARS. BOTH STOCK.
1 WAS A 70 T/A CHALLENGER 340 6 PACK OFCOURSE AND A 1970 340 DUSTER.
NEITHER LOST A RACE ON THE STREET TO ANOTHER FACTORY STOCK SMALL BLOCK CAR.
I TALKED TO THE GUY THAT STILL HAS THE DUSTER ABOUT A HALF HOUR AGO. HE ABSOLUTELY DID NOT LOSE TO ANOTHER FACTORY STOCK SB!
I KNOW MY FRIEND WITH THE T/A NEVER LOST TO A SB ON THE STREET OR AT THE STRIP.
ALL HE DID WAS MESS WITH ADJUSTING THE CARBS. THERE WAS A TRICK TO 6PACKS OR 6 BBLS. THE 6 PACK WAS DODGE THE 6 BBL WAS PLYMOUTH.
ANYHOW THERE WAS AN EASY " TRICK" IN GETTING THE 6 PACKS TO RUN PERFECT.
MY GRANDFATHER SET HIM UP AND SHOWED HIM.
NOT ONLY A SMALL BLOCK KILLER BUT IT WOULD BEAT 383s , 396s, 389 TRI POWERS , 390s etc....

I have a '65 383 magnum I pulled from my '65 Sport Fury I pulled to put in another car. That was '86. The car never ran again till around 2000. No video from them but from curiosity I stuck battery in and put on a carb it fired on the first hit of key. Now it's been on a stand since.
Definitely keep it original. The small block 340 in the '70 - '71 Challenger TA and Cuda AAR was one of the best engines Chrysler built. Way under-rated.
I got my 1974 Charger SE with 318 running after it had been sitting in the back of my neighbors property under some trees since the 80s

Good old noisey crysler starters that is sure original you can tell no one messed this motor up it’s in pretty good shape if the car didn’t run I would have been surprised not many mopars I’ve toyed to start after sitting 10 years they all start that motor don’t sound bad for sitting for 10 years I’m impressed also it sounds real good I know this is a ole video I commented on before but can’t resist this is my favorite challenger out of them all

Full restoration, same colors. Keeping period correct. OK to tweak suspension, brakes and steering. Keep the same engine but make as much power as you can without altering the exterior too much, apart from the exhaust. Ceramic coated extractors/headers would be nice.

In fact, this is a different white Challenger. The Kowalski car is an R/T 440.. this is a T/A 340. Love them both!

The 340 are bad puppies, probably even more so with the 6 pack... Carbs look amazingly clean for 9 years of storage...
I still cant get used to the fact that businesses there have to shut down in winter. I come from a country where winter means you might have to put on a vest but shorts are still ok.
