"The Ballad of Bertrand Bell" - An Original Song

- Somewhere on a skyship over Marquet, bound for the Ozmit Sea, a humble blue bard sings the passengers a lullaby about some old asshole he hung out with for a few days...
This is an unofficial little song I wrote for the one and only Bertrand Bell. Enjoy!
“I finished his song, by the way.”
“I’ll play it for you the next time our paths cross.”
He releases this before the EXU special. Cause he is crossing our (critters) paths!
What episode did he say that?
@@thisreplywillbeuselessbuth9879 Episode 14, at about 4:27:26
@@jabisdumb Thank you!
Can’t wait for him to return!
OKAY OKAY OKAY but imagine THIS
Bell's Hells enter a tavern, their ears are instantly met with a sweet melody and a very familiar voice to accompany it. AND THEN ROBBIE COMES BACK ON THE SHOW AND ACTUALLY SINGS IT?????
I would die I think
You, the critters and the cast 😭
Matt Mercer needs to see this
That would be the best welcome back to the group!
MANIFESTING THIS THING!!!!!
I would be in tears
100k listens in 3 days… you Critters are amazing. Thanks for the love! 💙
We love ya, Robbie! It was amazingly done. Many tears were shed and it's worth it. Thank you for this gem!
So good, man. The artist did such a stellar job on the animation too! Reminds me of art you'd see on a book that you might read your kids before bed.
That was a wonderful song for a fallen friend I think Bertrand would have loved this song about him. I hope that when you can rejoin the story that it's in a tavern and Dorian is singing this song. Keep up the great work 😃
Honestly. just a fantastic song. I havent closed the tab since i found it. Appreciate you and all you do.
There is nothing to thank as far as I'm concerned, CR teaches love and we Critters learned that lesson. Please never stop writing Dorian's songs, they are a gift and so full of love, thank you for sharing it with us!
I remember once when somebody remarked that Bards were just comedic sexual deviants. Somebody else corrected them by saying "No, the job of a Bard is to make sure nobody is ever forgotten."
Turns out that Robbie is a damned fine bard.
Shit this hit harder than I thought it would
I dedicated this beautiful quote to my College of Lore bard. Now it's her job to make sure nobody is ever forgotten.
Everyone loved Robbie in game, and then he composes "unofficial" songs about his aventure with the cast. Honestly, he's the goat. What more can you ask for when oppening up and inviting someone new in your little passion activity ?
Loves! Present tense mate! I have only watched Ashley J's one shot but I'm watching the one with Robbie
This is canon, folks
What more can we ask?
A formal petition to add Robbie to the main cast?
Something like this proves he belongs at that table! Hopefully he becomes a full fledged cast mate in the near future. I wasn’t gonna watch the exandria unlimited, but now I have to
@@brittnayhess4976 I was sad there's no CR today as the last Thursday of the month and then I realized there's ExU with Robbie!!!
"Unofficial"? Robbie, you are Dorian. If you will it so, this is cannon. It will travel throughout Marquet and all of world if you and Matt deem it so.
It is so beautiful and we Critters can't wait to see you again.
I agree, as a bard, I'm imagining Dorian singing this song
Well, CR is also a company now. It being canon in-continuity and whether it belongs to the franchise is a sticky legal area.
Canon
@@Pchlster And that's why fanon exists. Pretty safe to say this is locked in as fanon.
@@Pchlster It's... really not? It's a company owned and operated by the cast of Critical Role. As long as they say "yes, it's canon," it is. Canon is not determined by legal contracts, it's an artistic decision; and while whether they "own" it or not is a legal question, if the people who own and operate the entire company say yes along with Robbie, then they can own it. But more importantly, they don't have to legally own the song to say the song is canon in the world, those are two different questions.
He told Bertrand he’d write a song about him, and he did. Amazing.
I'm not crying, you are >:'|
Still absolutely missing Robbie 8 months later. Really wish he would become a permanent member of the CR cast

The fact that I can vividly imagine Dorian sitting on the deck of the airship, staring at the sky just reminiscing… 💙
"Shout out his name and give him hell" "cups up for the night that he fell" My Heart Melted, thank you robbie for being you and amazing
When we get the Bell's Hells animated series this needs to play as an outro song for Betrend's end episode
I would absolutely lose it crying that would be PERFECT
SPOILERS!!!
Also when the Hells return from the moon.
“I heard someone needed a humble bar-OOF!” *tackled by Orym and Fearne*
I can't help imagine Dorian writing this song as he travels back to Tal'Dorei with his brother. Gotta hand it to Travis Willingham for making a joke character that made such an impact on Robbie's first character in Critical Role. But, for now, lets hand it to Robbie for this amazing ballad. The visual was perfect as well. If you see this Robbie, I bet that all of us here want to see you back with the C3 team sometime! See you soon for ExU Part Deux
Bertrand wasn't really a joke character But a returning character Travis used in the search for grog, as a way to be in C3 from the start, but into his actual character a little later
Every character can have a impact, joke characters are just amazing characters waiting for their moments to shine
@@user-mu8ok5xf8d Joke characters aren;t usually that, many time joke characters are made for just that, to be a joke, to be a thing to laugh out out of character or in character and thats all they're for.
@@StarWyvernHPB I disagree. If you play them right they can evolve into something more
@@user-mu8ok5xf8d They can, but its typically rare.
And many times joke characters Even if they evolve and make an impact start out as a joke. Wheras Bertrand bell occasionally falling asleep doesn't make him a joke character.
Robbie is now officially a Critter Bard. Welcome to the club, brother.
Yes. I have this song in a playlist with the critical role intro songs and songs from lily fufaro and you
The finest of company indeed!
This man said unofficial as if Matt wouldn’t make this canon in a minute, also YOU are Dorian, this is your story to share
Beautiful song and beautiful accompanying artwork, making good on that New Years resolution too!
We all know that no Exandrian song is canon without a mention of anal beads.
I mean I already saw a comment saying if Robbie returns, he should enter singing this and I’m just like, you think Matthew Mercer isn’t already trying to plan that???
Anyone else get shivers when he said "Our Bertrand Bell". We are truely blessed to have Robbie Daymond as a part of the critter community.
Chills.
I’m not crying, this is just eye sweat.
I’m making a lasagne….. for one!
Same, I was watching so hard my eyes started to sweat from the vigorous watching....
What a terrible day for rain...
Ive been listening to this all day and my eyes have been sweating since
Well, I’m just not gonna deny that I actually cried.. I cried.. No sweat, literal tears..
One of the things that gets me about this is the compassion, Dorian is seeing Bertrand with such warmth. The other players, even Travis, and the characters to one degree or another all seemed to have a kind of scorn for him, and this appreciates the ideal of him in a wonderful way. I really enjoyed your time on Critical Role Mr Daymond, I hope you'll be returning plenty
IMO, Robbie played a huge part in setting the tone of the campaign early on
They ended up honouring him in their very name! I think Robbie played a big part
I cannot wait for the words, "Robbie, can you come back to the table." again 😭
“Shout out his name and give ‘em hell!”
The group is LITERALLY named Bells Hells im sobbing💙
Dorian was really the one that made me feel for Bertrand. He was the one that processed such emotion at Bertrand's death and I think the one who was probably most moved by the man. This song is so beautiful and thank you for it and your time on Critical Role. You are an inspiration of a player and person.
Especially their last conversation to me. Im in the process of drawing it since it hit my emotion so hard. He way they were having fun.. How bertrand says life was finally looking up.. How bell finally finds a group...
I loved the small moments where Dorian seemed to blame himself for the death. It wasn't a huge thing like a lot of media shows with a character having a crisis blaming themselves for a friend's death and the others having to reassure them, it was just a little bit of "if I'd been there", and "if I hadn't left him" followed by the closure of kicking Duggar's ass.
What game is that?
@@Dina-kc77 critical role campaign 3 episode 3
@@yuki97kira I would love to see the completed piece
Oh my goooooosh this sounds so lovely!! You have a wonderful singing voice too?! I’m loving this ❤️❤️
So...should we wait for a cover? Pretty please?
He was in a band as the lead singer!
HOLY SHIT ITS CAMI-CAT
Guy's to everyone saying it's not unofficial, he's being respectful, which is even more endearing frankly, rather than just assuming. Now obviously I personally think Matt will make this canon in a heartbeat, but it shows character and good manners to ask rather than just assume.
Just wanted to say, this really hit home. I can see Lady Vex taking a night out on the town and hearing this ballad, lifting a glass and thinking to herself that in his own way, he definitely managed to leave his mark on the world.
I really hope we hear NPC's or even the Bell's hells themselves humming this tune like a drinking song. Just to show Bertrand really did become an immortalised adventurer
waiting for dorian to rejoin and chetney’s forgotten who he is
I’ve been rewatching early C3 and I truly miss Dorian so much as well as Bertrand.
Here’s hoping Dorian can return before the campaign ends 💕
Wait, a bard who actually writes and sings songs about his adventures rather than just finding new and exciting creatures to bang? Can't wait for this Ozmit one-shot.
Yeah, they are few and far between. I am fortunate to have a bard in one of my games who wrote a ballad about how my chessmaster noble lose a match to the big dragonborn barbarian. No one except my chessmaster was aware that the barb was not actually calling the shots, but was taking instruction from something invisible on his shoulder. The bard played the ballad in a tavern and the player actually sang.
Just a bit of luck,
when you're feeling low.
A touch of sunshine through the cloud break,
that warms your weary bones.
A spark of of hope
down in the deep.
A gentle hand upon your bow, lulling you to sleep...
Setting off upon a quest,
adventures to unfold.
A journey's start, a hero's heart,
the courage that it holds.
Side by side with comradres, facing down a mighty foe.
Good fortune blowing on the wind that guides you where to go...
That's Beartrand Bell,
wishing you well.
When the tavern fire's roaring and the music starts to swell.
That's Beartrand Bell,
with a tale to tell...
That's Bertrand Bell
You may be lost,
with nowhere to go.
The air is chilled, you have no will. You feel so all alone.
The night is dark,
and the road is long
Find confort in the moonlight and sing this little song.
Then grab your ruddy hilt, my friend
and draw your Gambler's Blade.
The chances that you take today are fortunes to be made.
Heed that voice inside you
And sing out this reprise.
Feel destiny upon the breeze and let you spirit rise!
That's Bertrand Bell,
wishing you well.
When the tavern fire's roaring and the music starts to swell
That's Bertrand Bell,
what a tale to tell.
That's Bertrand Bell
Shout out his name and give' em hell.
Cups up! For the night that he fell...
Our Bertrand bell
Our Bertrand
bell.
Take it to the top
Thank you Turuo!
What a wonderful lullaby. Thursday nights are not the same without you, Robbie!
Agreed
And he's back folks!
Please let him sing this during an episode, or let it be the final song played at the end of the campaign!
Right?!? Also, the song I, Carrion by Hozier would be a very applicable song if he were to be alone with someone like Orym idk… 😂
Dorian’s about to make a whole album after last weeks incident
I would love nothing more
I'll raise a cup to that, to Bertrand Bell! Excellent job Robbie, the world of Critical Role is better with you in it.
Anybody else love the fact that Robbie is a bard in real life and keeps his in-game promises. The emotion is there, the love is there, the imagery is there. Truly he is one of my favourite Critical Role guests.
Also, I’m here cause I miss him. And Dorian. I miss them both.
Look back on all he did, I think there was alot.
He became rich
He fell in love
He joined Vox Machina on some of their most perilous journeys to save them
And founded one of the greatest adventuring parties to grace Exandria.
In the end, he died with a smile on his face, looking back on the memories of a long life well lived.
Coming here to chill after… that.
This was the song I imagined Dorian singing when he said goodbye to Bells Hells.
I love how in the second chorus in the background you can hear “bum bum bum” mimicking bells. It’s so clever and a sweet homage to Bertrand’s name.
Incredible song Robbie, I've been listening to this pretty much on repeat for the past few days. Can't wait to see you again in EXU (and hopefully again later in C3)!
Thanks Mark!
@@robbiedaymond777 I'm just starting to learn to play the guitar, is there any way you could post the tabs in the description for me to learn? I'd be proud to learn to play Bertrands ballad
@@jessetheunending9357 So I put the capo on the 5th fret and play it in the key of C.
Verse 1: Am Dm Am E (x2)
Pre-Chorus: F G (x4)
Chorus: C Am (x4) | G F C
Repeat for Verse 2, Pre-C, and C.
Ending: F G C
Just note when the chords change and play around with the chords and strumming pattern to match Robbie's playing.
"Wow, this guy does a great job of sounding like Robbie!"
"Holy shit, this IS Robbie!!"
I remember you saying during your recent signing stream that this song was never meant to come out in public.
I'm glad you changed your mind. I'm still listening to it in repeat and it's just absolutely wonderful.
(Also thank you Liam O'Brien for convincing Robbie to share this song to everyone)
All I think of is Matt's comment in the episode Dorian leaves while talking about Dorian's goodbye song.
"I think it's good... You don't need to roll for that."
Of course Robbie and Dorian are different people, but it really feels like as Dorian's leaving some of his best friends, he could easily bust this out.
Thanks, Robbie!
Something brought me back to this video today. Here’s hoping Robbie comes back to the table again soon.
Robbie/Dorian rolled a freaking NAT 20 for performance!!! Awesome work!
Twice! ))
Lulled my son to sleep. He immediately loves the “Bell Song”. Thanks for sharing your time and heart with us, Robbie. ❤️
Okay, the way Robbie just knows how to apply the emotion on certain verses is just /chef's kiss/
This part in particular was an emotional rollercoaster:
"Shout out his name and give 'em hell!
Cups up! For the night that he fell..."
You can just vividly feel how 'proud' he is of the person they're paying tribute to, as the tone gradually shifts into what feels like a wistful note, as he reminiscences the person they lost.
Perfection, Robbie!
Crit Role live. Everybody whispering alongside Laudna to fuck around with people she messages. The Hells Bells enter a tavern for the night, Matt narrates:
"As you enter the tavern, you sit down for a much needed rest, grab your food and drinks and relax by the firelight, FCG eating his copper coins as per usual.
Sam:I am grabbing a handful from my pouch like a bag of Doritos
*audience laughs*
Matt:"As you finally start getting comfortable in this rare downtime you hear this sound... It's calm.... But enticing... It's a lute. Could you roll perception for me?
*Rolls, numbers are called*
So Orym, Fearne, you two notice the music is accompanied by singing. A comforting.....familiar voice... You turn around.

.
Robbie would you please join the table?"
This needs to happen!also you captured the cast perfectly
Spot on!
No wonder Matt calls you an overachiever. You're a DM's dream to have on the table. Thank you for the moments of chaos and amazing roleplay, Robbie.
Now excuse me while I wipe my tears away.
If your goal was to make me cry, you succeeded. But if it was also to make me feel so happy it also worked.
Imagine in 50 episodes, bells hells go into a tavern, and you start hearing a guitar of screen and robbie comes in singing this one as he rejoins their adventures
I mean…. This sorta happened???
Scanlan: catchy but (mostly) juicy songs as a way to cast spells
Dorian: puts some _real_ magic in his songs
I miss Dorian so much to the point that I will cry the next time Dorian is featured in the main campaign again😭
Did you cry like I did?!??
Honestly? Make Robbie a permanent member. It’s decided. Marisha. Get on it.
He is. Of Exandria Unlimited. He's the star power they need to lead the expanded campaigns. We are fortunate Critical Role likes crossovers 😁
@@curtisholsinger6023 honestly him, and Aimee Carero scream CR energy. Anjali is great as well, getting very close to the same level. I love ExU and can't wait for more

Huh, didn't know you were into CR. Rock on.
Does anybody else really really hope that Bertrand was actually proud of his life??

I always got the vibe that his smile wasn't as big on the inside, y'know?
He was a joke character that Travis throw together just for a laugh WHY AM I CRYING OVER HIM!?!?!?! damn it daymond.
Same reason as Scanlan - both were made into very real people by the actors who played them. They started off as nothing but a joke, and became very real people by the end.
The surprise I had when clicking on this video to find out Robbie had made it and my first thought was "Damn this person has a great Dorian voice, OH WAIT" that was great
Wow, really nice job with this song and tribute to Bertrand, Robbie! You might actually make Travis (and the rest of the group!) tear up a bit at this!
And maybe Matt can add this to the background music to play in taverns from time to time? 🙂
Travis is a big mushpot, he'll cry.
I thought this was a song made by a fan until halfway through I realized the singer sounded pretty close to Dorian and then I realized its because it freaking is him.
Four months later and I’m still crying over how Dorian left the Bells hells. I really do hope that will be able to see him again soon. I love our little blue bard
Looks like Robbie rolled another dual nat 20 on performance
Just discovered this today and have already lost count of how many times I've replayed it. I'm a new Critter and am still catching up.
Robbie!! 😭
Holy crap, man. That was gorgeous! So thoughtful of you to compose a song for a beloved character that wasn't around for long enough to know him well, but you made him justice. Definitely adding this song to my D&D Tavern Ambience playlist.
Well done 👏🏼❤️
Edit: thanks foe the likes, y'all!
Also, Robbie: I've listened to this song every time I drive back home from dropping off my kids at school. It's a little me time I look forward to every day. 🥰
The fact that Bells Hells inherited a skyship makes this even better.
anyone coming in from 2023 thinking Robbie should sing an upbeat song in character in Chai- that would absolutely make my day!
Just here on the break of episode 34. Seems like the place to be.
Here with ya. My lord this was a necessary song escape.

MY DUMBASS JUST REALIZED WHAT CHANNEL I WAS ON . ROBBIE MADE THIS ?!? I SOMEHOW LOVE THIS EVEN MORE !
I was not prepared for not only the amazing singing voice, but the lyrical skill as well? This is such a well-written and cleverly versed song! The flow always feels natural from one line to the next, and the delivery is seamless. I'll be listening this for a long while, I just know it. Thank you Robbie, for gracing the stage at CR with your presence and all of us with this parting gift.
IKR? Like, we rarely heard Robbie sing at the table. But hearing him in this is incredible!!!
@@grey8288 I dunno, that improvised "Dave Matthews" advertainment was pretty fire....
What can be said about Bertrand Bell? He was a coward, an arrogant blowhard, largely unskilled and lacking in composure in combat, generally a fool in every aspect, and most importantly...he was a damn good man.
He had a base nature but strove to be noble in thought and deed. And even though he often failed in that, the frequent attempts to do so speaks to a strength of character that is rare in most people.
Rest well, Bertrand Bell.
I always felt that Bertrand didn't get the send off he deserved. I love this so much, and it made me happy and sad in a way I wasn't expecting.
I hope the CR crew listens to this during the next episode! So beautiful.
Do you want to flood the world with tears? Because thats how you flood the world with tears
One of my kinds headcannons is that if Dorian is still alive by the time C3 ends he'll write a song about Bells Hells
Not going to lie. Came for the air ship. Stayed for the song
"Unofficial?" My man, us Critters *WILL MAKE IT OFFICIAL.*
Genuinely started crying pretty much immediately
Beautiful voice, beautiful story
I haven’t started watching C3 yet but I’m already really sad Robbie’s run is over for now

“The chances that you take today are fortunes to be made.”
Beautiful Robbie…❤️
Never missed a guest like I have Robbie… can’t wait for him to bring Dorian back to the table some day.
God knows how many months later, I still cry every time I hear this little song. What a gift this is to all of us. Thank you, Robbie, for sharing your talent with all of us!
More than a year later and I’m still missing Dorian/Robbie! One of the best characters brought to life by a genuine person. It would have been interesting to see him with Group A, especially interacting with FCG and FRIDA.
Alright, this song has been out for a couple days now, and it currently won’t leave my head. Robbie is insanely talented and I loved him at the table. Dorian is one of my favorites from Campaign 3 thus far and I’ve loved seeing Dorian’s story unfold and seeing Robbie grow as a player. Leave it to Robbie, in his brilliant portrayal of Dorian, to write a little song about a character we knew for 3 episodes and make everyone feel something. I just love the line “When the tavern fire’s roaring and the music starts to swell, that’s Bertrand Bell.” Because Bertrand always seemed to relish and wanted to take credit for the good and exciting moments. When the group was around a cozy fire or another place of respite and swapping stories, there’s Bertrand taking credit for assembling the group. When the battle got intense and was coming to a crescendo and the battle music began to swell, then battle was won, there was Bertrand taking credit for the felled enemy even if he barely (at all??) did anything. As the song says: that’s Bertrand Bell, with a tale to tell. Taking credit for the moment, not in a way that was nefarious or even cocky, but in a way that you could tell he just relished being a part of something exciting. In a way that was ultimately endearing. I don’t know. I’ll bet Robbie didn’t put THAT much analysis into it when he wrote the song. But it just works on so many levels for me. It suits Dorian AND Bertrand so well.
This is exactly what I had imagined as the final song that Dorian sung for Bells Hells. I hope he rejoins the party some day! It’s not the same without Dorian!
"I always felt like I was on the outside looking in, and you all made me feel like I was part of something bigger" - Dorian Storm
I cried at this song. About a silly old man. But his story is actually beautiful in many ways.
I need this on Spotify now!! Absolutely love the song it’s amazing and is officially my new favorite song, love you Robbie !!!
Just watched the episode of Dorian's departure. This actually made me tear up a bit.
Thank you for being in our big family Robbie, we hope to see you again in these adventures. Much love ❤😍❤
I cannot stress enough how fucking much Dorian Storm (Brontë Secondsun Wyvernwind) has impacted the foundation of critical role. In the past they have had guests with star power but none have shined quite so bright as you Robbie I genuinely hope we get so much more Dorian.
My prediction: that Hells Bells will walk into a tavern in a far away land and then Matt will cue this audio on the speakers. And Dorian will join us once again. Open the floodgates of tears haha
Great song by the way Robbie!
I'm not crying, someone's just cutting onions in my office right now.
But seriously, this is beautiful! Can Robbie Daymond please, please come back to Critical Rolle? The Bells Hells need their Dorian Storm back. He was such a wonderful addition to the CR cast, he melded so well with everyone and he created a character that I legitimately cried saying goodbye to when he had to take his (stupid-idiot) brother home.
I got so excited when a friend sent me this. I didn't see your name at first so i was like "Oh man, they even sound like Robbie this is. . . IT IS ROBBIE!"
This is amazing
I'm a little late to the party here, but I can just see Travis sitting in a dark corner of his house bawling his eyes out as he listens to this amazing song. Well done Robbie, well done indeed.
No matter how stressed I feel, when ever I hear this song, it all just vanishes away… thank you Robbie (Dorian Storm) for this beautiful and heartfelt song.
This is beautiful. Wasn't expecting this at all, and now i've been hit in the feels. I'm not crying, YOU'RE CRYING!
You're not crying, I AM!
So good to have our blue boy back in the game
Absolutely amazing, Robbie. I picture this being sung for the first time under a shining late day sun on the deck of the skyship... Leagues behind, an unbidden and lonely tear silently slips down Imogen's face. Not knowing exactly why, she smiles and brushes it from her cheek. I found you to be a welcome addition to this wonderful group. You won't ever be considered anything less than CR Family. We love you.
