Unfortunately this method didn't work for my 2023 Rav4 TRD Off-Road when I was having the same issue, but I was able to resolve the issue by pulling the 15 amp fuse labeled "radio" from the fusebox under the fuel and hood levers. I kept the fuse out for a few minutes, then replaced the same fuse and restarted my car, and unpaired and then repaired all my devices, and the issue was resolved.
Thank you to this creator for setting me on this route after the dealer would only recommend a full replacement of the media system.

Sound good bro. Did you leave the engine on while removing the radio fuse or turned the engine off and turned on after installed the new fuse? Please advise.

THANK YOU - 2023 RAV4 Adventure - used the fuse tool from the fuse box in the lid from under the hood on the left side to get that same 15 amp fuse labeled “radio” under the gas and hood latches, had it out for a few minutes, put it back in, and it WORKED! Thanks so much @coachblindflorals3761

I did go to a dealership, left my 2020 Rav4 Hybrid with them for 2 hours and they weren't able to fix it. Fortunately they didn't charge me anything, told me to come back and have the entire infotainment system replaced. I called another dealership who told me there wasn't anyway to 'reboot' the system and it needed to be replaced. The same as the person in the video (thank you so much for sharing!!) I was out of town for 3 weeks and left my car outside at a friend's house (it's usually garaged). Came back to the on-off cycling. Tried the fix of putting the car in reverse with ebrake on, and it worked immediately. I'm looking forward to giving my feedback to the 2 dealerships 🙂

THIS WORKED!!! My 2020 Rav4 screen went wonky - off for a minute then on for a few seconds then off for a few seconds then on for a few minutes.... Took it to the garage and they wanted $98 to run diagnostics. Since I had literally driven away MINUTES earlier from getting it fixed, it was irritating. So, I took it to Toyota. The guy said that he'd seen that happen before and it would take up to 2 days to get it fixed. Thankfully, I found this and it worked!! I was amazed!! THANK YOU!!!!

September 2024 - I also have a 2020 RAV4 hybrid limited and the same thing happened to my multimedia screen. The screen would go blank every 15 seconds and when it was on it would not respond to my pressing the screen to give a command such as pressing the audio button on the menu. I followed the author's instruction and it worked. My event occurred after I had to change the fuse for the 12 vollt 120 watt auxiliary port in front of and to the left of the stick shift. The fuse box location was under and to the left of the steering wheel. Thank you so much for sharing the solution.

Thank you for the step by step instructions. I tried this 4x and it did not work for my 2023 RAV4.
I kept searching other ways to fix this issue which seems to be a problem for many people. I searched the internet and this also didn’t work for them. They recommended going into the Toyota app, deleting your account and setting it up again as if you were creating an account. This worked!!!! For all those who this reverse method did not work, try removing yourself from the app and then starting over. I wasn’t thrilled to spend money on a fairly new system. Good luck!

Started the car this morning and got the exact same result - something like 'updating system' or 'restarting system,' and then the screen cycled on and off just like this video. This is amazing. I had the same issue after my 2021 Rav hybrid sat for 4 weeks. I did some searching on google and found a reboot process by holding down the volume button, which restarted the media screen but didnt fix the issue. I then made an appointment at Toyota where they told me that they needed to charge a minimum $150 diagnostic fee. I called them back after seeing this video and said 'Don't touch my car, I need to try this youtube trick first!'. Picked up the car, tried this hack and BOOOM! It worked!. Works!!!
I got step by step instructions from Toyota:
    Software Update Procedure
    1. Turn the ignition to IG-ON/Ready-OFF.
    2. Is the vehicle currently being updated a 2020 - 2021 model year Highlander, Highlander HV,
RAV4 and RAV4 HV, or 2021 model year RAV4 Prime equipped with Premium Audio?
     YES - Continue to step 3.
     NO - Go to step 8.
    3. Is the radio experiencing a continuously rebooting condition?
     YES - Continue to step 4.
     NO - Go to step 8.
    4. Apply the parking brake.
    5. Shift the gear selector to Reverse.
    6. Leave the vehicle in Reverse for a minimum of five minutes.
    7. After the five minutes have elapsed, shift the gear selector back to Park. The radio will now
    boot up normally.
    8. Press the Menu button on the radio
    faceplate, then select Setup.

Thank you Sir! All I can say is Thank you! Apparently Toyota is clueless to this fix. I have an appointment with them in the morning and they wanted 99$ upfront to do a diagnostics on my 2019 Rav4. My car doesn't even have 20k miles on it yet and I'm tired of Toyota penny pinching consumers like myself. I certainly appreciate the time you took to share this video. This worked great for me as well on my 2021 RAV-4 Prime. Thank you SO much for posting this and what a great and relatively simple solution that dealers can’t seem to figure out. My brother know quite a bit about cars and he says that when you have the car in reverse and the reverse camera is on, it is providing power to the unit which he believes needs to recharge the navigation/audio system itself. I see that many of the people here had not used the vehicle for 3 weeks or more, so this seems to make some sense. Bottom line, a HUGE thanks for making this post!

I was skeptical that this would work because the steps are so RANDOM. My 2019 RAV4 hybrid was parked in the garage for a month and and after I came back, the screen went on and off and the buttons didn't work. (just like in the video) I made an appt with the dealer and then searched on google and found this video. It works. Crazy as it sounds, it worked. Is this a money making scheme for the dealers? How can they not know about this fix? I cancelled my service appointment and told them about the youtube video saying they could be heroes if they told people how to fix this over the phone. Thank you thank you.

I have a 23 Rav 4 hybrid Ltd. With the larger screen After about 6 months of ownership it went into reboot mode for about 20 minutes, fixed itself than it was fine for 3 weeks, did it again, fixed itself after a few hrs. Finally did it again for about 3 days than cleared itself after a long road trip.
Took it to a dealer , he found missing updates Been two months still working fine.
The " reverse " trick or disconnecting the negative on the 12v for 5 minutes is a temporary fix.

Thanks for this information, I found dealers are not the same, some know more or less than others. Updates are usually needed, but I don't think it's an official fix from Toyota for this issue. Otherwise, dealers would've suggested the same fix for the many viewers that commented saying they took their vehicles to dealers. Mine has been working fine since mid-February, so hopefully, it continues, I will, of course, not leave unused for weeks again, thank you.

@@WheeNC-DIY I searched the problem on line. Depending on where your car was manufactured there is a firmware update released for it.
Approximately released June 30 for US cars and 1 week later for Canadian made ones.

Somewhat same issue with 2023 RAV4 XSE hybrid - now 13 months old. Using iPhone 2ndGen SE with IOS-18 software connected via Bluetooth and plugged into USB port for charging. While listening to podcasts under Apple CarPlay at exactly 5 minutes into ride the screen would reboot then would return to my podcast. Sometimes it would also reboot at 10m mark into ride. This was not every day but most days on my drive to work. Dealership first (they claim) updated the radio firmware. Problem continued. Then dealership ordered new Radio under warranty which was installed a day ago. Still no change - radio continued rebooting @ 5 minute mark. The service consultant said, "get a new iPhone". The only workaround is to just connect the phone to the car using Bluetooth & abandon Apple CarPlay entirely. Doing that solves the problem. Thoughts?

On other extended trips, I have always had someone start my Rav Hybrid every couple of weeks and I never had this issue. This time I left it for 4 weeks without a start and it broke. So the question is how long can you leave the Rav4 Hybrid with starting it before this strange behavior happens; No more than 2 weeks? Thank you for telling us all about it!

Our nearest Toyota dealership is an hour and a half highway trip away. I went there I to buy a PCV valve for outr 2017 Highlander and I mentioned the radio/screen cycling on and off thing that happened twice in the last two months. Each time the process mentioned in this video worked and I told them it did. Then the lady who is the Service Manager told mr what to do and said they tell any customers who have that issue to do that. She suggested 20 minutes instead of 5 though and because I did do 2 five minutes of this process each time that would add up to 10 minutes. If anyone else follows this video and doesn’t have success with a 5 minute attempt, try doing it for 10 minutes.

@@WheeNC-DIYby the way I mistyped a 20 minutes. The Service Manager said 10 minutes. I have also heard that after doing this process you should turn off, lock and leave the car for a few minutes. When you return, ( in the first two cases for me it didn’t seem to work but I locked the vehicle and the next day my wife drove the car and the radio worked. Just yesterday and now for the third time, the radio started doing this on/off thing. It happened less than 15 minutes after I was commenting to my wife that it hadn’t done this in over a month ( the second time ). I jinxed it. Someone said to pull up on the parking brake lever two times, holding it up for 5 seconds and then pressing it down twice and holding it down for 5-10 seconds. We are due for a service on our 2023 RAV4 Hybrid and the manager told me to mention the issue at that time and they will check for any service bulletin updates that might fix this. Since it’s been happening for at least 3-5 years on people’s vehicles I would think they would have this sorted out by now and not charge people who’s cars are past the warranty for the fix or replacement. This is ridiculous.

  • @Zeek800
    @Zeek800 8 месяцев назад

Thanks for this video but I’m a little confused. You say you have a 2020;hybrid RAV4? The 2023 does have a “ newer version “ of this system. My wife phoned this morning and our 2023 Limited Hybrid started doing this. What’s confusing with your explanation is you say you had to start the vehicle to shift into reverse so did you have to push the brake pedal? If you shift into reverse with the car “ started” it would roll backwards. This wouldn’t be a good thing to do for 5 seconds let alone 5 minutes. Then you pressed the parking brake button down? or did you pull it up? once or twice?

    • @WheeNC-DIY
      @WheeNC-DIY  8 месяцев назад +1

Hi there, I basically needed the vehicle on before I can shift it in reverse. Then, to stop the vehicle from actually moving in reverse, I pressed on the brake pedal. For added security, you can apply the handbrake button, which you can pull up to apply, then press it down to release it. It's the button with letter P in a circle. I read about this exact thing happening to the newest RAV4 models too. I hope this helps you my friend, cheers

    • @Zeek800
      @Zeek800 7 месяцев назад

So when I got home I went out to our 2023 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. On my 2017 Highlander with push button start if you don’t press the brake pedal everything but the engine goes on ( wipers, windows etc ) but it can’t be shifted out of park. So anyways I wen5 out and put a piece of 4 inch by 4 inch wood behind the front tires an$ tried what you suggested. After 5 minutes i push down on the park brake after shifting back into park. I turned the ignition off for 2 minutes and restarted the vehicle. The info system still did the on and off thing. I went through the whole process again and again nothing changed so I gave up. The next day after I got home from work and asked my wife if the system was still doing the same thing she said it was working fine. I was a little concerned that this was a “ hard reboot “ and we would lose all the presets and her information for her phone’s connection to her phone. Everything is fine. Funny thing is we also had parked the vehicle for 2 weeks while we were on vacation 4 days before this happened. I am very unhappy with the current state of our Toyota Dealership’s Service department and the mechanics ( tech ) so I’m glad that your suggestion apparently fixed this issue. Toyota says you have to replace the whole infotainment system which at least one person was told is not covered under warranty. I believe this person paid over $2000 to have it replaced. Many Toyotas have issues where the Air Conditioning stops cooling the vehicle. Toyotas answer is replace the Air Compressor ( $2000 plus ). Instead, there are two small parts on the compressor or the Low side AC line that could be replaced and usually fix the issue but Toyota won’t sell just those two parts ( each one costs less that $100). The same with any transmission issues they want to replace the entire transmission when a simple transmission fluid change and the filter will fix the issue. Toyota isn’t the Company it used to be letting their dealerships do this kind of stuff.

    2019 RAV4 Hybrid Ltd
Same scenario - overseas 4 weeks came back to glitchy screen and no CarPlay.
    This worked like a charm.
But it took me a few tries to get it right.
To be clear, the “trick” is to get the power on while car is in R without starting the engine.
    Here’s what I did:
    1. Start the car per usual
    2. Put in reverse
    3. Turn car off
    4. Ignore the warnings and tantrum your Rav is throwing
    5. Foot OFF break, press ignition button (turn power only back on)
    6. See step 4
    7. Now it doesn’t matter if you put your foot on the break while you wait or not… just wait 5 min
    8. Put the car back in park
    9. Turn the whole thing off and on, twice if you can’t really hear it and you still get a little weirded out that your car can be on but sound off. Just start over is what I’m saying.
    10. Turn the car on and enjoy your CarPlay!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m cancelling my appointment with the dealer!

Block your front wheels. Get in and if you have push button start press the button twice without pressing the brake. If you have a hybrid you have to press the brake to put it into reverse. Make sure your parking brake is set on. Leave the vehicle in reverse for at least 5 minutes. After at least 5 minutes put the vehicle back into park. If the info screen shuts off after a couple minutes turn the engine off and do all the steps again. Mine still didn’t work after 3 attempts. The next day my wife drove the vehicle and the screen was working fine again. Toyota should know this and how to fix it. Hopefully they come up with an update and install that update on not only warranties vehicles but the ones off warranty. Some dealerships have charged people over $2000 to $3000 to replace theinfotainment system. This should be a no cost fix. Infotainment systems should last the life of the vehicle. Transmissions, transfer cases and rear differentials are NOT lifetime parts.

It appears Highlander battery swap without a memory saver will have the same issue.
    Remedy:
1.Start button 2x but do not turn on engine (no foot on brake).
    2. Let the info system load, it will cycle on and off
    3. Turn on the engine let the info system load put in reverse and foot on the brake but wait for atleast 5 mins.
    4. Hit the ebrakes button on and off.
    5. The back up screen should be on the whole time.
    6. Put it to park position after 5 mins and let the screen load completely before turn off the engine.
    7. Turn the car on to see if info system reset.
    Good luck ya!
