My son smashed his 2 discs while dead-lifting .... he has horrible problems...this is a great episode...please, do a whole program on this topic....the surgeries and the recovery.

Curiosity, did he have a lifting coach? Was he following standard powerlifting programs and technique with that happening?
Do you think it was deadlifting alone, going too heavy too often too soon? A combination? I’m trying to find ways I can strengthen my spinal erectors/back muscles without risk of loading the spinal discs too much.

Many years ago bought and read a few of McGill's books and as a lifelong athlete and nurse, the advice has helped me avoid back pain. A strong back and spine are so important.

Listen to the entire podcast with Dr. Stuart McGill. Lots of great info. However, I am a bit confused. Do I stop weightlifting or do I stop yoga?

How did you manage to keep your lower back in good condition to this day? What was the cause your problems? Do you have a workout for lower back that you can recommend?

My 17 year old daughter works out with her Daddy almost every morning and since He's recently read your book she can't help but hate your guts. "He wants me to go rucking now! GRRRR! He's obsessed with this Attia guy!"

So the issue was overworking? How could it have been avoided? Could a muscle imbalance have contributed?

Peter, could you show the MRI of your spine to us?

Peter your story is common, the fact you had back pain which reduced and went to your foot is most commonly caused by a posterior disc bulge which then extrudes where disc nuclear material exits the disc via a split in the wall (which is why back pain reduces or resolves as the pressure is gone) and hits a nerve root which causes leg or foot pain and associated neuropathy. You only confirm the obvious with an MRI, you dont treat the MRI, you treat the patient. Surgery is only required with progressing nuerological loss such as foot drop. Extrusions can disolve and reabsorb or they can be so severe they hit the Cauda Equina and then emergency surgery is required due to loss of bladder/bowel functions. Extrusions can break away from the disc which is called a sequestration and float around and cause nerve root symptoms. You caused this due to your repeated and prolonged flexed spinal postures, sitting and/or lifting. All the episodes you described where all in lumbar spine flexion postures. Having a stronger back or core will not resolve your behaviour and poor posture choices. Like with Michael Phelps good technique is just as important as his fitness. Remember strong people still get bad backs...strength alone is not the solution!

It's those 10 jerky meat sticks you eat each day with over 4000 mg of sodium that wrecked your health.
