    Cleric Ranger is also a time honored Baldur's Gate tradition, from back when it accidentally gave you the entire druid spell list in the earlier games.

    Amazing lore friendly build for her. I would just switch her cleric life domain with light domain, the passive of light domain is amazing and better fitting for Selune cleric path of Shadowheart. Best domains for cleric are Light, War, Tempest, Life and then Trickery, (nature& knowledge feel like waste).

      Light cleric is cool too, especially if you only take 2 levels, but the level 8 class feature isnt divine strike which is both dumb, and big sad. If it had divine strike, I would 100% take light over life I think. But life cleric is fantastic

    Thank you for this! It's inspiring me to use Shadowheart in my Honour Mode run. I'm opting for 7 Cleric and 5 Gloomstalker. Though colossus slayer carries strong value, I prefer the initiative and, single extra (early!) attack one-time punch over the greater return over time from Hunter.
    Mainly though, it gives us a strong use for our bonus action with Hide giving us advantage on our next attack for those times we just can't get elevation. It increases the viability of sharpshooter an even more viable early grab vs the ASI.

    As a game designer it's good to hear players complain of Shadowheart to remind me juts how unwilling players are to read up on basic mechanics. Stuff really just has to be super obvious for players to get it. It's even right there in the tooltip for Sacred Flame (though IIRC it's buried deeper for her elf firebolt?).
    Also makes me feel like either BG3 or D&D (or both) need a better design so there aren't classes that feel like Clerics do in BG3. Basically everyone should have "basic attacks" that target at least 2 types of defenses, which would mean if you were fighting high-dex goblins early in the campaign you would simply use Ranged Cleric Cantrip B, which would target AC or some other non-dex save. I think it's fine (good, even) for classes to not necessarily have an option for _every_ defense type, because it gives classes a more fleshed out role, but to be stuck without a non-dex cantrip at level 1 really sucks for cleric.

    • @CreativeExcusesGaming
      @CreativeExcusesGaming  9 месяцев назад +1

      In this case, I think the problem is that armor class is somewhat intuitive, the attacker rolls a die against the enemies armor class number to see if they hit: die + bonuses = bigger number? You hit. Cool.
      Spell difficulty class is wildly unintuitive though. Your base is 8 (why?) and instead of the attacker rolling a die to hit, the defender rolls a die to defend. Explained this way, it makes some sense. But that's not really explained by the terms "saving throw" and it definitely isnt explained by the term "spell difficulty class" and none of the tooltips in the game indicate what these numbers would be. You have to know where to look in the menus to find these stats, and even then they aren't intuitive to read.
      This gets worse when you are looking at physical attacks that can cause effects that have a difficulty class, but you can't find what that difficulty class is (at least I cant).
      Add in that enemies roll using different stats against the spell difficulty class and it just gets really confusing really fast.
      It would be more intuitive if the spell difficulty class concept was replaced by an attack roll against a specific non-armor stat. Call them "Ability attack" because you are essentially attacking a specific ability of the enemy, and have the roll be a different die size so it isnt a 1d20 like an attack roll, maybe like a 1d12 or something like that.
      Side note though: Cleric actually has two cantrip options, but if you don't play Cleric for your origin, you don't get to pick the other one (Produce Fire) unless you respec Shadowheart. Produce flame does make an attack roll, and you can take both Sacred Flame and Produce Fire.

    Not a bad idea, very commendable and an unorthodox way of thinking. Bravo.
    However☝🏻
    Going lv1 or lv2 fighter can give you the archery style, short rest AS, and if you go 3, you can go battle master for even more short rest synergy and not solely rely on AA procs. Her attacks are complementary, not the main damage. You have palocks and sorcadins for that😉
    For me after the previous 2, i just need a barb and either storm tempest or a spores or moon and i cant decide which😫

      On my comp, she’s been a top damage dealer most of the game with this setup, and I dont have to rely on battlemaster die for extra damage. Once per turn, i get extra damage and I just pop a speed pot if I really need an extra action.

      Firebolt/fireball/firewall/fire dragon breath with elemental adapt feat and a fire dragon bloodline. Pick a fire dragonborn as your race for extra. Bards extra attack it at lvl 6 rather then lvl 5 as it is for some other classes.

  • @theAV8R
    @theAV8R 10 месяцев назад

    Correction: at 5:06 you say two levels are required for saving throw proficiencies, but that's not the case. Only the 1st character class level matters for that. 2nd level of life cleric just gives a 6 hp AoE heal and one more lvl1 spell slot.
    I suggest making this even stronger by making Ranger an even earlier priority.

    • @CreativeExcusesGaming
      @CreativeExcusesGaming  10 месяцев назад +1

      Right, I can hear why you interpreted that to mean I thought you needed two levels for saving throw proficiencies. Those come at level one, I just didnt want to say “take your first level” as one sentence and “take your second level”. Just bad writing lol.
      The second level in cleric is there for that heal because the heal levels up as you do. At level 2, sure its only 6hp, but thats like 1/3rd of your hp 3x a day, and is AoE. At level 3, regardless of multiclassing, its now 9 healing, and so on. At level 5 its 15 healing with no roll on it which is already the equivalent to an average mass cure wounds roll (minus he wisdom modifier). And again, you get it 3x a day. It is 100% worth delaying ranger until level 3 for that heal I think.

  • @frankwhite51
    @frankwhite51 9 месяцев назад

    The only part I would change is the cleric sub-class. War domain would be a better fit. Having access to a few extra attacks if needed to finish off an enemy is good. Healing in combat is meh outside of getting someone back up with healing word.

    • @CreativeExcusesGaming
      @CreativeExcusesGaming  9 месяцев назад

      Her in combat healing single handedly carried learning a certain dragon fight at the end of the game so Im going to have to disgree. Life domain was absolutely key there, and in many other fights. Another 100-150 damage a day from 5 extra attacks doesnt feel nearly as good as a potential extra 288 hp per short rest once you get your second channel divinity. I also had a bard in the group so I had 8x36 healing aoe heals a day at level 12 which is quite a lot of healing (max potential of 2304 extra hp if you were to somehow need and get the full 36 hp on all of your party members every single time you healed with your channel divinity). And that doesnt include mass healing word or healing word and the life domain (and item) buffs on top of that.
      Id say healing outside of being a life domain healer doesnt feel very good at all, but as a life domain cleric, it is very powerful.

      @@CreativeExcusesGaming You're missing out on the life cleric subclass features so slightly less healing, and you don't get turn undead. You still get access to all the same spells, are delaying ranger levels by 1 instead of 2, and horde breaker is another way of getting more attacks given an easy/common setup. @@jubes1300 Extra spell slots, level 5 Aid by the end game for 20 extra hp on all of your characters and summons, level 3 spells like mass healing word for more healing and buffing without costing an action, and the life cleric’s short rest recharging channel divinity which is a big aoe 36 health heal (plus item effects) two times per short rest which can be incredible in fights you dont end in the first two turns or if you make a mistake at 3am after 6 hours of playing.

      @jubes1300 6 месяцев назад

      @@CreativeExcusesGaming Yeah total caster level is delayed by 1 in my version. In the video you didn't go past 5th level so I'm assuming both versions could get to 5 ranger 7 cleric for endgame with the 20hp aid and other spells you mentioned (if you don't want the hunter 11 aoe). Healing potions are also great because you can get lots of them easily and not need spells as much beyond healing word to pop someone back into the fight. Also saves resources so you don't need caster level as much. And more attacks/damage is better at giving enemies the dead condition so you don't need to heal as much. I think both versions are absolutely viable and not that different I was just sharing an alternative idea I thought of, and I think it mostly comes down to playstyle and preference.

      @@benlehmann4080 that is when its even more valueable to bless instead of bless on heal because of spell slot limitations. Bless also makes concentration harder to break by adding 1d4 to your saves, and if you save a little gold and put her in the chainmail +1 early, she’s pretty hard to hit for early enemies with like 19 AC if she has a shield on. Throw on a safeguard shield and she’s got some very good AC that early, and solid saving throws

      @CreativeExcusesGaming I always just used the short rest aoe heal to sorta blitz it without using an actual spell slot. Played the first turn out normal - the went hot on turn 2 so as not to waste the healing benefit. Can also get the healing necklace in the underdark to pop the free aoe heal for the longer fights. I suppose either way the same principle is being used though. Just a different route of getting there. For how early you get it - that ring is sorta broken though.

    • @CreativeExcusesGaming
      @CreativeExcusesGaming  10 месяцев назад +2

      I wish that was true, but Its an item that grants a two turn bless effect called “The Whispering Promise.” Life Domain Clerics get bonus healing (2+spell level on heal) as their level 1 class feature. At level 2 they get preserve life which is a 3xCharacter level AoE heal. Their level 6 feature is that they heal themselves 2+spell slot level when they heal another creature. And level 8 they get their divine strike.
      Whispering Promise is a great item choice for this build though if you want to rock the bless + blade ward on heal item combination. It just means youll have to spend a heal to get bless for two turns which in the early game means burning a long rest Mass Healing Word from the Amulet of Restoration, or saving your preserve life for in combat and burning a very nice day long sustain tool for two turns of bless.
