As a CNA with years of experience working with dementia and alzheimers patients, this infuriates me. These elderly folks are going through enough pain and cruelty from losing their memories, their self-respect, and their personalities. It's hard enough on them. They become very scared and confused often. It takes a lot of passion and patience to properly give them the care they need. I've never understood people like this. Why become a nurse/assistant if you have no compassion...

It's called greed. They want the job thinking that they will not be held responsible for the patients. They think it's an easy pay check. I wonder how many other folks have been suffering at the hands of these porkers. They're animals. Treat them as such. Give them a long long long taste of their own medicine. Bye bye losers

@@charlottewhite1277 About 15 years ago, I had to have emergency back surgery, and was going to need a nursing home stay afterwards. While I was in the hospital, I got a list of local nursing homes that would be covered by my insurance, picked 4 possibilities, and 3 of my older siblings visited them and rated them. Any nursing home should welcome family members to do an in-depth visit, and be willing to answer all of their questions. They dismissed one home on the smell alone, and 1 place that was very dreary and depressing. They gave the other 2 places good reviews, so I went with their top choice, and had an excellent experience there. That place had no rooms available the next time I needed one, so I had to go to a different home that I didn't like.
Since then I've stayed at the 1stt NH 5 or 6 more times, post surgery or after being hospitalized for a serious injury. I've never seen anyone being mistreated. Most of the staff work really hard, and try their best to take good care of the patients. Not all nursing homes are horrible places. Taking care of a family member who has dementia is really difficult, and places an incredible amount of stress on the caregiver(s). When my father got to that point, I was already disabled, so they're was no way I could care for him.. Although my siblings were all retired, they all knew that having him move in would be disastrous as far as their own mental health, and got their marriages. We picked out a high quality facility for him, and we visited often, popping in at unexpected times. That was the best decision for everyone involved.

@Luminary Harris Tell me that you're a racist, without saying "I'm a racist." Whenever someone says "those tybe of people", you know they're about to start putting their bigotry on full display. Referring to people as "feral" and referring to "house broke" and saying they aren't "domesticated" is a way of dehumanizing them. That's an early step in every genocide - get the prevailing group to look at the minority group as less than human.
Yes, on average Black families in the US are hundreds of years behind white families in generational wealth, because for 400 years their labor was stolen. Yes, because of the way that we fund our public schools ensures that people in poorer areas are going to have underfunded schools, which typically have a hard time recruiting and retaining good teachers. However, what we're looking like at here is the behavior of just 2 very young women, and you are making a conscious choice to pretend that reflects on their entire race. Being behind on generational wealth, doesn't mean an entire race of people lacks civility, or any other positive attributes, or are in any way inferior to you or I.
Btw, I grew up on a dry land farm in a very rural low income area. I certainly can't say that I went to the "best schools". I applied to Yale, just to have bragging rights, (yes, I was accepted) but since I wouldn't have dreamed of asking my parents to take out loans to help fund that, I worked full time to put myself through a state college. I didn't get any inheritance, just a legacy of hard work being a decent person, and treating everyone with dignity. I'd choose my inheritance over yours any day.

As someone who takes emergency calls from residents at "assisted" living facilities, I can tell you that abuse and neglect in these places is not rare at all. They could start by paying the workers. But then, oversight and accountability would be great. And if you have someone in one of these places, get Lifeline. Even if the facility has their own. If we suspect abuse or neglect, we will let you know, and we WILL make sure they get help.

He was rarely moved, rarely bathed, and the verbal abuse was a very common place. He was afraid to tell me because he did not want retaliation from the workers. I finally got him out of there. These two women should have never been in the business of caring because if you don't have a compassionate heart, then this is what could happen. My condolences to the family members of this woman. It's WAY more common than people realize. I worked in several mental health facilities and those places are full of staff people who are cruel and enjoy having a ready supply of vulnerable people to be their victims. Staff members who were decent people and horrified by what they see are afraid to report it because in institutions the majority of staff and management circle their wagons and protect each other. Staff who report abuse, be it outright physical abuse or the extremely common passive aggressive type abuse and neglect, are considered trouble makers and are predictably fired for some trumped up allegations. That's what happened to me when I reported physical abuse of a six year old boy in a psychiatric facility that I witnessed with my own eyes (namely a staff member picking up the child by his forearm and throwing the poor thing against the wall). For weeks I was shunned by most of the staff, forced to switch jobs and work where they knew I'd be miserable. Then they let go because I and the facility were "not a good match".

I wouldn't leave an 18yo to care for an elderly person with dementia because they might still be immature and not able to empathize with patients yet. Even 20yo should be monitored closely as they're very inexperienced in life and could easily make a clinical mistake.

One of the most civilized comments posted here. They are too immature to empathize. Mere children whose frontal lobe hasn’t developed were placed in a position of responsiblity that they are clearly too immature to handle. High school bullies. And I also don’t believe the facility was caught off guard. They knew what they had in their midst. These girl were not quiet, but talking out loud and laughing. And I am sure this is not the first time they have done this. This is not about race. Not about calling people animals. It’s about the facilities hiring individuals who are not mentally capable to caring for others. They took a test and passed. That’s it. Elder abuse is very common. It’s so common, one should almost expect to find it just about everywhere. Never trust any facility. Be vigilant. Best case scenario, don’t patronize these places. I feel like they all are a gamble.

As a medical social worker(worked in long term care facilities and now in hospice) here are some tips for facility living:
Put a camera in your loved one’s room where you can monitor them fr your home. (if they have a roommate the camera can’t face their roommate and the facility will have to make the other resident/their power of attorney aware. However, you do NOT need anyone’s permission. Just have to make everyone aware.) Will staff be annoyed: Yes. Will it make them behave the way they should towards your loved one: YES 👍🏽
Make frequent visits and occasionally bring goodies to sit at the nurses station for staff. This will help staff remember you and you’ll create a “presence” there.
Befriend other visiting family members. They can look out for your loved one when you’re not there and vise versa.
Get to know the Social Worker. Most of us are Social Workers because we truly do care. We can do things like set up video calls with you and your loved ones so you can see them, and communicate/enforce your preferences to other staff members. Get to know the facility Administrator and or the DON(Director of nursing) as well.
Be apart of care meetings that are held for your loved one. If there aren’t any formal care meetings, you have the right to request one.
If you can afford to hire a caregiver for any amount of hrs, do it. They will provide personal 1:1 care to your loved one that facilities cannot provide.

Without excusing the vile way this senior with dementia was treated, you have to wonder about the hiring and training standards at this place. These 2 very young people are no longer a problem, but the people who hired and trained them also share in accountability and should not be excused. At 18 and 20 years of age they couldn't have been very experienced and I wouldn't believe that their lack of compation and maturity was just now revealed in this situation. I think we will later learn that the problems at this place go way deeper than these two individuals and this single situation.
