Thank you Jon - most informative review of Cyclades that I've seen. Appreciate the gameplay demo and the love-neutral-dislike points with specific examples, helped me make a decision on the game after going back and forth for months. Wish this had been higher up on RUclips's search results, would have saved me lots of time!

This is the best review I've seen for Cyclades so far. Enjoying playing it but disliking how it ends is a useful kind of player reaction to shed light on that other reviewers haven't. Also, the 3 plastic figures that seem like a design waste -- excellent observation. If I had that game, I'd try to make houserules to get those pieces into play more. Lower their cost and/or make them stay around longer, or come up with some totally new purpose they serve.

Jon, great review, I like how you breakdown your reviews. I've heard good things about this game. I totally agree your review. I like the auction and how each God functions, but the battle (and dice) not so appealing. Too bad about some of those issues you mention...wonder if any expansion could fix all that.

Absolute love this game. Some fair points but haven't really experienced your grievances as being particular irritating in my play through.
I have never thought about delaying getting a metropolis but make damn sure I have enough troops to defend it. So even if you do get Pegasus, my metropolis will be well guarded. BTW, the Titans expansion has 2 special metropolis's that creates an incentive to get it as it is on a first come first serve basis.
I definitely find the game plays best with 5 people. All the gods are out so there is no reprieve from say, Aries, if you are afraid of being attacked.
Quick tip: bid on Athena early on when nobody wants her and quietly accumulate her cards...when you do get your first metropolis, everyone will scramble to suddenly outbid you for Athena

So Jon whats your opinion about the game some years later? Do you recommend it or not? How about Cyclades compared to Kemet? Whats would be your pick? Thank you.

I've only played it one more time since this video, and it was 4 years ago so my opinion stays the same as those discussed here. I am not crazy about "dudes on a map" which is the main reason that Kemet didn't stick around for me, given a chance I'd probably play Cyclades again over Kemet.

I'm way late to the party, but I'm buying this game today! What do you guys think of the expansions? I'm definitely getting C3K, but which of the others are indispensable? This question is for anyone willing to answer.

I've unfortunately never had the opportunity to try any of the expansions. I hope you enjoy it :)

Leaving your one metropolis unguarded knowing there is a Pegasus card that can be played? That person deserves to lose. Sometimes the problem isn't the game but the people playing it or how they play it. As for being targeted after building first metropolis or players avoiding being first to build, again I submit that is a player issue not a game issue. There are multiple ways to gain a metropolis. Attacking and subsequently holding it may be the most difficult as you may be suffering attrition from the capture. Sounds like your play group may suffer from group think on this game.

maybe the answer to the pegasus is to house rule it so that it can only be used to attack any non-metropolis island

Nope. The thing about pegasus is, you know it is in the game so you prepare for it. Or buy it yourself.

How do you like it now with the Titan Expansion?

I just ordered Titans, so I have high hopes (it's an expensive expansion!) but no impressions yet.

Hey Jon! I love your sharp reviews and I was wondering if you have had a chance to play the Titan Expansion yet? If so, do you still find an anticlimatic game ending?

I just saw you already covered this in the Q&A section of your Variety Vlog Feb 2016. I assume that you still haven't played the game yet...

Pegasus solution?: Give the attacked player a small bonus?

    • @maxwellschultz4784

Nope. You know it's in there, so you PLAN. Jesus. You people are so dumb.
