- If you love catching speckled trout (seatrout), then you are going to love this! One of our Salt Strong Insider members (Dave Otte) had mentioned how much success he was having trolling Slam Shady paddletails behind his kayak.
So during a recent fishing trip we decided to troll for trout in a long idle zone. Not only did we catch a TON of speckled trout, but we caught multiple other species as well (spanish mackerel, bluefish, trout, lizardfish, and ladyfish).
After we tried this a few times (just to make sure it wasn't a fluke that trolling for inshore saltwater fish works), we went out with our camera guy Cody to film an entire podcast episode on how to troll for speckled trout.

I really like this format the best. One rule, no editing! We’re all human.
Thanks Tony!
I only want to say three words, SLAM SHADY POWERTAILS !
I guarantee they catch all kinds of fish !
Captain Walt here from The Fishing Channel Northeast ... In a couple of weeks I’ll be using the Slam Shady Powertails in Florida just south of Tampa Bay to make some new videos for my channel.(too cold up here in Long Island sound) ,
And when We get back here in New England I’ll be using the Slam Shady Powertails For fluke, sea trout and striped bass as soon as the season starts,
I guarantee you will catch fish !
Thanks again Joe and Luke Simonds (like diamonds)
THE FISHING CHANNEL NE FISHING ABC .... Don’t forget it catches just about any game fish that is chasing shrimp or small fish
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Capt. Walt!
I love these live vids. My favorite are the reactions to each other as much as the fishing conditions! "That's right, Joe." :))
Haha thanks Jason!
Love the live podcast guys. It really helps me to see the tactics live. Keep it up and thanks for all y’all do!
i love these pods/vids. so relaxing and informative
Thanks DooWah!
Here in mobile during the winter months when the trout are deep we troll or drift with paddle tails or grubs on a jighead... Not nearly the speed you're running, usually just with the current or the trolling motor keeping you going about 2mph. Super effective. The 'do nothing drift'
Thanks for leaving the helpful comment!
Good point about the speed, robrez. Most new reels take up between 25 and 36-inches of line per turn of the reel handle.... consideration to keep in mind when working lures, particularly in the winter when cooler water makes fish lethargic and slows metabolism. The fish slow down and really don't need to eat as much as often to maintain. That makes their strike zones smaller, so working lures slower as temperatures fall will be more effective than greater speed.
A very effective method of catching fish, especially trout during the winter months when they school up. Best time for me seems to be during negative low tides when fish drop into channels. You'll also catch ladyfish there, but if you slow down you'll catch more trout and fewer ladyfish. A shad style bait works well, but runs up in the water column a bit, but I like a lure that dives a little more and has a line attachment a little further back on top of the head like a 52MR MirrOlure or a TTR model. Also a DOA TerrorEyz is excellent for slow trolling. Good job guys. A lot of good tips.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Ray!
I did it all over again and it worked thank you guys
Slow troll, works every time heading out of our channel. Light rig with lady fish, good fun, on a 5-6wt fly, great fun.
Great idea!
I really dig the live fishing vids. Keep em coming.
Thanks Justin! More videos like this coming soon.
Down here in El salvador we troll Bomber crankbaits for Snapper and snook and it works better than any other rigs
Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment Diego!
I never forget going down to Punta Gorda area to visit relatives back in the 80's and seeing all these skiffs in the canal with small inboard motors and dry stacks, so i asked, what are they for? trolling for trout, commercial boats.
Great video and appreciate the format!
Thanks!
I wonder if you'd catch cobia trolling a bigger bait on the flats? I've seen some big ones in 3' of water on a flat. And I wonder if a heavier lure down deeper could catch flounder. Trolling for flounder sounds like it might actually be great if you can get deep enough, especially on flats. I gotta get back to the saltwater!

I can't believe you guys didn't catch a Jack. I always troll in my Yak and the Trout and Jacks Hammer either shallow diving hard baits like a Yo-Zuri inshore 3d minnow or down south swim baits.
Same here... the jacks are often patrolling the edges of the flats too.
try slowing down the trout seam to like it slower than 1.5 mph. On the mid Atlantic coast faster than 1.5 gets you Striper and Blues
Thanks Jeff!
What kind of boat?
Any problems with line twist from all the trolling?
The paddletails lures shouldn't ever twist if rigged on a jig properly.
Hello, I'm called the (Eight Rodd Banditt) 🎣 but my real name is Cory, thanks you for the video's!
Looks pretty fast to me, Luke. Maybe it's a video perception
A biologist, yes for me 👍🏾
Thanks!
Joe, don't feel bad. My brother out fishes my almost every time. The times I out fish him I have to rub it in his face to make me feel better.
Haha!
How fast do you troll
A very slow idle speed... try out slightly different speeds to see what they respond to best.
Went through the whole process credit card number and the last button saying yes I want them it doesn't do anything
Can ya troll for redfish?
We troll for snook with Rapala SR5 or SR7
Great lures!
So people have to pay money for this? It basically sounds like Facebook but you want people to pay for it?
very dull video
