Sorry to hear about your kitty. I have had the same experience in the past with my kitties, such a painful experience to deal with. Current kitty is 22yrs old this summer and still spry. Belonged to my neighbours wife, when she passed the cat just moved in to my place, which he was used to, as he had been coming to my house since he was a kitten. May the memories of your cat give you peace. Great video and restoration as always. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & craftsmanship.
Gutted to hear about your cat and your companion of the last 18 years. Never an easy call, but always the right move. Take care. Good call on the movement. Nice job
Bro your cat died, I'm gutted for you, my rescue cat Juno died a year ago and I'm nearly in tears every time I see her picture I really feel for you mate. Andy.
I watched this last night and have been thinking how to respond. I really feel for you. I can hear the difference in your voice. I was wondering why we haven't gotten a post for a while, and I'm very sorry to hear the news. I know many people wouldn't understand the bonding a man can have with his pet, or the emotions that follow such a loss. The uncanny thing is the similarities we've experienced over the last month. Three weeks ago Friday my father in law went in for a surgery that was supposed to be no big deal. After the surgery, in recovery, he suffered a stroke. They performed another surgery for the stroke, and he didn't recover. He passed that Monday. I have 2 cats, 16 years old, brother and sister, that have been with me since birth. They were born in my house to my daughter's cat, and these two were something special. The daughter has long-since moved out, byt the cats remain. One is having some digestive tract issues, and for the last few days has been bleeding. I'm bringing her back to the vet today, hoping they can stop the bleeding. Thank you for being open and sharing your situation. It's comforting to know that even though we're across the pond and don't really know each other, like our shared passion, we also aren't alone in our difficult experiences. Stay strong, brother. 🤝 Oh, and beautiful job on the watch! You make the difficult things look easy and your presentation always gives me a boost of confidence to keep learning and working on these miniature mechanical marvels.
Really sorry to hear about your father in law :( I hope you are taking some time for yourself. Thanks for sharing, you guys in the comments have been great ❤️
So sorry for the loss of your cat. 18 years wow. Long time ti be part of the family. I also lost a cat that we had for 18 years. It’s tough. They are part of the family. Great video , love the details and the video of your work. Thanks again!
As much joy as your cat brought you, I’m sure he was fortunate to have you take care of him and enjoyed your companionship. I know what a tough moment that was for you. Now, about that watch….how did so much water get in there?! It’s called a Seamaster after all.
What a beautiful restoration, the lume was super fresh. So sorry that your kitty passed,it’s always rough but just takes time for you to deal with it. Peace to you
Once again, an informative and excellent commentary. Your video presentation is top notch. Explaining why you do your way of doing a particular method and what to look for is so good. I have taken on board many of your comments and usually obtain donor movement for my projects. Really does save the day. Thank you. Pets are family. Know your loss.
Hi Mat. I am sorry for your family problems and wish you all the very best. This is an excellent video and thank you for doing these videos. I am a cat person and I had a beautiful cat for 18 years. She passed years ago after I was giving her faux dialysis and I eventually had to do what you went through - however the dialysis I did probably gave her a few good months. But I feel you and I am very sorry about your cat and your family. My very best to you and your family and condolences about your cat.
I feel for you, brother. A couple of weeks ago, I lost my dog who was approaching 20 years old. Making the call to euthanize him was one of the most grueling decisions I've ever had to make, since he had been with us for the entirety of our marriage. I'm sorry for your loss.
I could never cry when on the odd occasion friends and family have died, but got very emotional about my dogs dying. Pet just give give give and don't expect anything, they just give their love.
Thank you Matt. Missed you. Such an enjoyable video. The information about costing was inspirational. Not many take the time to give that information. Very helpful. Level of work is as usual, exceptional. Great explanations and visuals. Nice memorial to Furman.
I had to put my 19 yo cat down a few months ago, I feel your pain brother. But on a better note, the color you made the lume was spot on! I've seen San Martin with faked patina lume, and they used WAAAY too much orange, looked awful! When I heard you say you were using orange paint to tint it, I got The Fear. But you nailed it.
Sincere sympathies on the loss of your beloved feline family member. My wife and I have had to make that call numerous times over the last 40+ years for both cats and dogs, and we know and empathize the pain and sadness of saying goodbye. 😪Blessings to you for providing a loving home for his 18-year life.
This video has a bit of everything for me. I’ve got this watch in quartz , haven’t seen an automatic one before and it’s so interesting! Sorry to hear about your cat. Love your videos! Educational and entertaining! Great work!
Another great video, thank you! You can remove rust from a hairspring with a dilute solution of citric acid in water. Rinse in IPA afterwards and dry. This will also remove any heat bluing on the spring, but I guess that’s better than having a rusty spring. The problem with rusty hairsprings, whether you remove the rust or not, is the tiniest spots of rust can have a huge impact upon the rate of the watch. The strength of a hairspring is proportional to the cube of the thickness, so a tiny reduction in thickness where a speck of rust exists has a much bigger effect on the strength of the spring than you would expect. For this reason, rusted hairsprings should always be replaced. If a replacement is impossible, you can shorten the spring by repinning it at the stud to compensate for the loss of strength, but this changes the position of the pinning point relative to the point where the hairspring exists the collet at the centre, which throws positional rates off badly…and it becomes a case of having a watch that ticks but will never keep time at anything approaching factory specs. Sometimes a cheaper alternative to replacing wheels with mushroomed pivots (especially for movements where parts are very expensive) is to reduce and burnish the pivots on the Jacot tool. Use the pivot file end of your burnisher to fix the mushroom shape, then burnish it to smooth and harden. Measure the now finer pivot and order a new jewel to put into the watch. Some pivots are too mushroomed to use this approach, but it is often a viable alternative to replacing the wheel. I’ve seen how laser welding can be used to carefully build up new metal where it is needed. I haven’t tried this yet, but I suspect a mushroomed pivot could be filled this way and then brought to being perfectly round and polished smooth on the Jacot tool. Given you managed to source the NOS movements and rotor parts, that was a great way to go, but for future watches, the above may prove useful. I can tell by the knowledge and skill you demonstrate in your content that you might often be aware of the stuff I’m explaining in the comments. Please realise that I write comments on RUclips both for the content creator and those who might be learning about watchmaking from RUclips who may read the comments section. My heartfelt condolences for the loss of your cat. As an animal lover myself, cats in particular, I realise how much a part of the family and household they become. Especially after 18 years. I hope that the pain and grief will soon pass, so you can focus on remembering all the great memories you made together over the last 18 years.
I like the watch. Great idea to change movement. Turned out amazing. So sorry about your cat. I know how emotional it can be. Thanks for the video buddy. Cheers
Lol, I am learning and did a capstone yesterday. I flipped the capstone holder onto the oiled jewel, pressed it down to seat it as the first time I did this it did not seat. As a result originally when I installed the part sat too high in the setting and I couldnt close the shock spring without it stopping the balance. Well after I cleaned the jewel again and when I went to press the jewel back into the capstone holder it went flying away. I heard it but did not find it. Luckily I had 3 spare movements for parts.
It's funny because as I was reading this I knew what had happened before I read it lol. It happens to the best of us. One tip is to really hold your tweezers very loose when you are dealing with the capstones. If it slips it won't ping as far as you haven't boosted it with tension from the tweezer grip.
My sincere condolences for the loss of Furman. Take comfort in knowing that you gave him the best life possible. I've never seen that model of Omega before. The new movement was definitely the correct choice. I wonder if the original lume had turned black from water damage and somebody removed it? Otherwise you'd expect more debris from it floating around on the dial.
Thanks Peter :) I didn't actually notice it was missing at first as I just assumed it didn't have any. Then I checked on some other pics online and it was there. Strange for sure.
So sorry about your cat! I'm sure you gave it the best life possible. It's hard. My cat is 15 so I dred the thought. It's life, but that doesn't make it easier.
First and foremost so sorry to hear about your loss. 😔 Ours was a Pomeranian whose name was Nico, it will be 3 years in May. 17 years with us from a puppy so I know what you mean. Great repair Matt and a fortuitous find on the movement from eBay. You mentioned having to use an original wheel as the one with the new movement was different enough so it wouldn’t fit. Wondering if that was an Omega embellishment or an ETA production change ? As always, great video and commentary and look forward to your next one. By the way , did you get the new edition of the ENICAR book, Time ForA Change ? I’m loving it ! Take care Matt stay well 🍻
Many thanks 🙏🏼 I think it was probably an ETA production change. I haven’t collected my copy of the book up yet but should be meeting up with Martijn the author pretty soon
Hey nice video, but you made a mistake, on these ETA movements the "cannon pinion" is not the wheel you oiled at 14:50 but the minutes wheel you installed at 20:28. You can install it upside down to lubricate it from the underside. Other than that nice Video, hope you are having a wonderfull weekend.
I actually just looked into this and you are absolutely right. As the canon pinion was not friction fit whatsoever I assumed the extra bulk on the third wheel was the driven canon pinion like on a few ETAS. This obviously eluded me lol Thanks for watching
Great job overall Mat, finding that replacement movement was a stroke of luck! All the best wishes to your step dad, I hope he fully recovers. Condolences about your cat, never a good time for it but that's how nature works right? Everything that has a beginning has an end. My 2 Boston Terriers are on their end stretch of long and happy lives - 14+ and 15+ so not looking forward that that, but they are great companions still, even Yoda when he gets into his crying moods. Cheers again from sunny warm Johannesburg 😀
Sorry for your cat, I know it can be difficult. As for the watch, really nice work! But polishing was a bad call as these were fully vertical brushed from factory, I know as I purchased one back in the days (Multifunction version). Cheers
Thanks 🙏 I think this must have been polished prior then as it certainly didn't look brushed. A shame then really. I just hope he got it for a good price in the end.
I sympathize with you my friend. I had to do the same thing with my white shepherd that had been by my side for 12 years. On a side note, we have a company in the US that will buy your car online. There commercials have a jingle that says: “ Webutanycar” and I can’t help to think about Enicar 😂
Brilliant repair and restoration. One observation I have is that although the dial has lume, the hands don't, so you'd never be able to read the time in the dark. The dial certainly looks much better with the lume. Perfectly applied!! Do you think that the watch may originally have had different hands? Love your videos, especially your honesty! Keep up the good work!! Tony (UK)
this was a dirty one from the dirty dozen !!! mooie restauratie Matt ..sry to hear from your stepfather hope he will be well soon and gecodoleerd met je kat dat zijn echt moelijke beslissingen . heel veel sterkte .
Hello there and thank you for the video. I am no professional but: consider the two finest grades of EVE FLEX rubber abrasives, hand-held (not in a power tool), instead of fiber brush if you haven't tried that already; they sometimes do *magic* with minimal collateral damage, and rust / water deposits on plated parts could be such a case. And, sorry to hear about your cat; I am no cat person myself but I had pet rats who passed away (put to sleep, cancer) some 20 years ago, after I had them for 2-3 years (their normal life span), and that is still a sad memory. Very best regards.
Sorry to hear about your cat. An animal isn't just a pet, they become a member of the family. I hope your stepfather is OK. Sorry your having a bad time.
Hey hb those Polaris models are an odd breed this is the first automatic one I've seen many tend to be quartz. It was an odd period for omega they'd already stopped making there own movements and pre in house Co axial. I'm really sorry to hear about your fur ball when you live alone they are so much more than a pet there a friend companion and company, however never forget even just through the watch circles I'm sure you've acrewed a lot of friends and people who care and would be there so never be afraid to reach out if you need it! 🌞 ........now the reveals coming up so shhhh! 🤐😁
That's a really nice restoration, particularly the lume. I repaired my Seiko's busted rotor a couple of weeks back, my wife didn't catch on that I'd doneit and bought me a new watch. A festina quartz chronometer, and frankly I'm enormously disappointed. Basically zero lume, it's invisible at night, the chrono seconds hand is really clunky, advancing once a second, compared to my cheap Seiko. I initially thought the chrono hand was misplaced, as it runs between the second marks on the dial, but it turns out that only holds for the first 30 seconds or so - on the second 30, it ties up to teh tick marks exactly. For a watch that cost 3 times what my Seiko cost, it feels horribly cheap. Oh, and it loses time. A quartz watch that loses time. FFS.
I would be interested in seeing if a fella couldn’t get away with using a non toxic rust remover like evaporust to clean parts and neutralize rust hmm. Also good sir you need not be afraid to polish a watch. A small bench grinder and the appropriate compound, and not too much pressure, and you would bring the shine back to a lot of watches. I promise it’s really not that hard to do. Speaking of watches well a clock in this case (same principle), I just wound my lovely 8 day “Karl Lauffer” wall clock from 1918! So I can listen to it tic away as I watch the video! Don’t worry it’s super fresh, and was serviced by an elderly watch / clock maker about 3 years ago. It is a fantastic looking movement.
I did have a pop with some rust remover but many parts were quite deeply penetrated. I agree with you about the buffing on the mop, I do this but won't remove normal scratches as I like to keep the character of the original watch. Nice to bring a shine back to them though and the gold popped through nicely on this one. Thanks for watching
I have a question. I watch several channels on here that feature watch repair and Fixadot is used by many. It seems to be common practice to use it on the pallet fork and then immediately clean it off the pivots. My question is why? If the purpose for using it on the jewels is to help hold the oil so it doesn't migrate away, wouldn't it be more logical to leave it on the pivots to keep the oil on them and keep them lubricated?
That’s a valid question. The reason it is removed from the pivots is that it can cause potential drag which would result in a lower amplitude. On the vast majority of mechanics watches you never oil the pallet forks pivots at all so there is no oiling in the first place 👍🏻
Hi HB As you know caught up with you privately regarding Furman (great name BTW!) On a more lighthearted note do I get the 🏆 for being the most observant subscriber by noticing that you played “The Tray Game” in your excellent video today. What item on HB’s workspace disappears and reappears as something else during the video? I’ll come back later and check if anyone has got the correct answer!
This would have sent me to ebay looking for a replacement movement. 😄 I hope your stepdad is better, so sorry about your cat it's brutal to lose a pet.
Looks like this watch had a history of salt water use and has never been cleaned or serviced by the original owner. Seals do not last forever especially if used in a harsh environment.

Worst looking Seamaster ever. I am so sad about your fur Baby. My Q lived to be 17 years old. He was a North American tabby. I had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had to do the same thing.
Take care Matt stay well 🍻
Many thanks 🙏🏼
I think it was probably an ETA production change.
I haven’t collected my copy of the book up yet but should be meeting up with Martijn the author pretty soon
So sorry for the loss of your cat
Thank you 🙏
Nice restore! I really appreciate the tips on the lume.
Also, sorry to hear about your cat.
Thank you very much!
Nice video sir, sorry about the loss of your buddy..
Thanks ☺️
Thanks Alan, it does suck but you are right. It is the flow of life.
Thanks 🙏 Funny about the advert lol
Thanks Matt 👍
Cheers Tom 👍😊
feel for you Bud i lost my cat 3 weeks ago smegul 14 years old to cancer, hes left a big empty space in me and the misses life.
Tony (UK)
We were compelled to put both of our cats down (14 & 18 years old) within the last 60 days. Absolutely heartbreaking. I fully empathize HB.
I saw you today in Bairro Alto. Greetings from Lisbon
lol I highly doubt that was me
Great video. I might be picking one of these beautiful watches up.
Random question - what tweezers do you use?
R.I.P Furman 😢
Cheers fella
this was a dirty one from the dirty dozen !!! mooie restauratie Matt ..sry to hear from your stepfather hope he will be well soon and gecodoleerd met je kat dat zijn echt moelijke beslissingen . heel veel sterkte .
Bedankt Elder 👊🏼
Hello there and thank you for the video. I am no professional but: consider the two finest grades of EVE FLEX rubber abrasives, hand-held (not in a power tool), instead of fiber brush if you haven't tried that already; they sometimes do *magic* with minimal collateral damage, and rust / water deposits on plated parts could be such a case. And, sorry to hear about your cat; I am no cat person myself but I had pet rats who passed away (put to sleep, cancer) some 20 years ago, after I had them for 2-3 years (their normal life span), and that is still a sad memory. Very best regards.
Thanks for sharing about your pet rats. I had a big white rat as a pet as a kid :) Cheers for the eve tip.
Thanks Ben. I have to get used to it being more quiet in here for sure.
FFS.
Thanks for watching. Oh damn, shame about the quartz as that's not what you would expect.
More SeaMonster than SeaMaster but amazing restoring job!!! 💪
😅😅
Hi HB
As you know caught up with you privately regarding Furman (great name BTW!)
On a more lighthearted note do I get the 🏆 for being the most observant subscriber by noticing that you played “The Tray Game” in your excellent video today.
What item on HB’s workspace disappears and reappears as something else during the video?
I’ll come back later and check if anyone has got the correct answer!
Thanks mate 👍🏽
You got me thinking about the desk thing then, I even had to check myself 😂
I wish i could get my grandfathers old automatic Timex restored.
Great video. Good decision to get a nos movement! Were you able to use the new main plate or did you have to use the old due to serial number?
Yes the new mainplate was used as the serials are on the auto bridge and the barrel bridge only.
This would have sent me to ebay looking for a replacement movement. 😄 I hope your stepdad is better, so sorry about your cat it's brutal to lose a pet.
Many thanks 🙏
So the customer has put in a watch for repair and has ended up with a better watch than when first purchased .
Thanks for watching
Brother, it's been a while. Are you okay?
Your content is amazing, thank you. Where did you learn your English language please? Your accent is really intriguing. Manchester?
I am English but I haven't lived in the UK for nearly 20 years so it's a bit all over the place.
he HB how are you doing m8!!! last one 2 months ago i hope you are doing well?
Why do you need lume on the dial when there is no lume on the hands?
That’s a fair point, I never noticed that they didn’t lume the hands ☺️
How lucky do you need to be to find a NOS ETA movement needed?
Not that lucky I think, the guy on eBay even had 3 for sale in his listing.
So sorry about your cat :-(
Many thanks 🙏🏼
titanium Seamasters are extremely my shit
Good to know 👍🏽
Looks like this watch had a history of salt water use and has never been cleaned or serviced by the original owner. Seals do not last forever especially if used in a harsh environment.
You could be right about this. The corrosion was pretty heavy for its age.
EBay 👍🏻
Worst looking Seamaster ever. I am so sad about your fur Baby. My Q lived to be 17 years old. He was a North American tabby. I had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had to do the same thing. I was so heartbroken. Please know all pets go to heaven and you gave him a great life. They are in our lives to show us unconditional love.
Thank you so much 😊 and thanks for sharing
get my zodiac going
I think we emailed no
Splendid 😸
Thanks :)
dude i like the tattoo on your left arm! do you want me to tell you what it means?
or you already know..
Thanks. I would hope I do know 😂 Thanks for watching ☺️
@@HorologyBiology its written in hebrew from the bible.
Not for everyone but ,
Why not get new 2892 and fit ?
Quite simply because that’s not the correct movement for this model of Omega so then it would be a marriage watch
Auction houses ....
I hear you :(
@@HorologyBiology Certain Auction houses are not reputable enough to charge that knid of comission money.
Nice case , crap movement, ladies version was a quartz in the early 80s..
Cheers for watching
:)
😊
Insane work with the lum!
Thanks
He's not happy because of how stale this watch is, it's such a shame to see a good watch go bad
You know this
