    Interesting that I picked up a Harmonica and accompanied you in this song. But even more interesting is that instead of an F Harmonica I chose to use a C. It requires a couple of notes to be bent but it works very well together. If you know a Harmonica player you might want to get that person to try it that way with you.

    Hi Jo Ann, loving the beginner lessons. For many years I've wanted an Autoharp after first seeing one being played by Billy Connolly. I'd been all over Ebay etc recently but couldn't find one in the price range I was prepared to pay for a first one especially with being in the UK. Anyway, a few weeks ago I found an Oscar Schmidt os73c in a second hand store and I don't think it's ever been played. Absolutely delighted with it and so the learning process has started . I play guitar (and other instruments) so not a stranger to strumming and picking but one area where I'm struggling is with the thumb pick and technique having never used one before. I'm fine with finger picks, using the Dunlop 025 nickel ones. What thumb pick are you using and do you have any advice for strumming style such as how hard, amount of pick to be using and anything else you can think of? Looking forward to more lessons, really like your style - very friendly and relaxed.

      Hi, Dave. I’m a big fan of Billy’s also! The OS 73C is an excellent choice. Having 21 chords arranged in 3 rows is important when first starting out. This particular model has what we call an “A-style” bridge, in that the strings pass from the tuning pins over a single bridge rod before going down across the body. This is the identical type of bridge that most autoharp luthiers use when making their custom autoharps. In the early days, Oscar Schmidt made all of their autoharps with A-style bridges. But in the late 1960’s they switched to what we call a B-style bridge, where each string has its own little bridge pin that it passes around before going down across the body. Both are good, but give different types of sound. The A-style bridge gives more volume and a brighter sound. The B-style bridge is more mellow and sweet. This OS 73C is a re-make of the old OS model 73 (black box) that was one of their best-selling models in the early years. As far as thumb picks are concerned, I like the Kelly Speed Pick. It comes in three colors, yellow, orange and white, with white being the hardest density. This thumb pick has a very narrow, stick-like plectrum that works well for picking out melody using the thumb (a technique called “thumb lead”). In addition, it seems to generate less self-noise than other picks I’ve tried. The trick to strumming with the thumb is to not involve the whole arm in the process, and to not strum all of the strings. I always tell folks that you don’t have to play all 36 strings just because they’re there. Be selective. Small little strums involving only a quarter of the strings at different levels of the autoharp is something to try. Let your right elbow drop to your side and only use the forearm, wrist and hand. If your upper arm is involved, it’s overkill. The upper arm should be relaxed at your side. The motion for strumming is a flicking-type of motion using the hand. Just pretend that you have just discovered something very sticky and nasty on the end of your thumb and you’re trying flick it off without touching it. :). Then apply that motion at differing levels of speed and force of attack on the autoharp. Then start doing it with a background rhythm. Just try not to think about it too much. I find that when I try to analyze what I’m doing, it suddenly gets much harder than it really is. Hope this helps!

      @@autoharpist Wow! Thankyou for such a detailed reply. I'm really pleased with my Autoharp and it's great to read a bit of history about it. I think I've grasped the thumb pick now. I've bought some white Dunlop ones and they feel the perfect length. Also, I think I was wearing it at just the wrong angle so it was catching the strings rather than picking them correctly (I hope that makes sense). I'm now quite confident with the pattern from lesson 3 and enjoying playing it over other songs. Time for the melody!!

      @autoharpist  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jeanette. This autoharp was made by Tom Fladmark. It is made of Koa and Spruce. Tom makes wonderful -sounding autoharps, and I have several. But another big difference in sound comes from the fact that it is tuned differently - it’s tuned diatonically in the key of F, meaning that it can only play songs in that key. Diatonic harps have more strings open and less muted strings.

    Hi Jo Ann. I play with a dulcimer group. I have an Oscar 21 key with no F#minor or B minor which is in some of our songs. Is there a substitute I could play? Thank you.

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  5 месяцев назад

      There aren't any substitutes for B minor or F# minor. These two minors are necessary when playing in the keys of D and sometimes in the keys of G and A. There *is* a solution, however. It involves removing the Ab major and the Bb7 chords from your autoharp, moving all the minor chords up two slots and then using those two bars you removed to *make* both a B minor and an F# minor. I show you exactly how to do it here: ruclips.net/video/pFH_SjpxGf0/видео.htmlsi=798qi4qP7ML_GH5D

    Thank you for this lesson. Who is the gentleman in the picture hanging on the wall?

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  5 лет назад +4

      That's Kilby Snow, aka the "Blue Ridge Baladeer". He was left-handed, and played the autoharp by holding it in his lap as shown in the picture. He used his right hand to chord, and his left hand to play the strings *below* the chord bars. He's one of the pioneers of Old Time autoharp music, and part of his signature style was a technique known as "drag notes" that many players try to emulate. He was also blind in one eye. Here's a link to a video of him here on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/Ewfhy9R90u4/видео.html

    It would have been much more helpful for beginners if you explained which strings you are going for WITHIN the chords as you play melody for this song. Just saying the chords isn't helpful enough for someone who is still trying to learn music theory and what notes are in each chord, and therefor is struggling to actually pick out the melody like you are showing it here. For example, the first two notes are with the C7 chord but are C and Bb, then it switches to F chord, but the note you are wanting to pick out is A. Your videos are so helpful, please keep in mind actual beginners like me who are only just starting to understand chords.

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  4 года назад +4

      Thanks for your input, I understand your point. However, my approach to learning the autoharp is to get people learning to play songs by listening to the music and finding the right note by hearing it. In other words, you don’t have to know the name of the specific note in order to be able to find it within the chord by hearing it when you hit it. At this point in a beginner’s journey, it’s much more important (in my opinion) to get them playing successfully by showing them HOW. The WHY (chord structure, chord theory, key signatures, scale notes within a key) is information that is readily available elsewhere and can be explored at any time if the player is interested in that aspect. Many folks have absolutely no musical background at all and wouldn’t know a G note from a B flat. They only want to know which button to push, and how to use their right hand to pick out the note they’re looking for. Knowing the name of that note isn’t necessary in order to play the tune. But if knowing the name of the specific note is heIpful for those who wish to understand the WHY, or the theory behind it, that information can be easily extrapolated, as you have done. I myself began playing with no chord theory knowledge, but in the process of playing over these many years I slowly absorbed these concepts and the autoharp was the tool that taught me this. Theory knowledge is nice to have at first, but not mandatory.

      @@autoharpist - I mean no disrespect at all. Please don't misunderstand. Thank you for sharing your teaching style. But since this is not a commonly known song, it is MUCH harder to just "know" what note we're going for or to pick it out. The benefit of saying which note is not so people need to be bound to the sheet music or have any understanding of it at all- it's because most autoharps out there beginners would have access to have the notes for each string printed on the body. If I know I'm going for the C, I can look and say, Oh it's in this general area, so I can aim my fingers here. With just saying "listen and figure it out", I now have a 2 out of 3 chance at failure every single (major) chord.

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  4 года назад +3

      I do understand what you’re saying - no offense taken. I welcome any and all comments, questions, etc. To be honest I had not taken into consideration the fact that many manufactured autoharps do have the notes printed on the body. Thank you for pointing that out. Knowing the name of the specific note can be helpful for those who wish to use the labeling to find the precise location of the note. But in actual practice, looking for the note label while playing is likely to slow down the learning process. You would have to stop playing, take the ‘harp out of playing position in order to see the label to find the note. When you’re in the middle of playing, your right hand needs to learn the spatial relationship of the notes *in context* of the songs. Stopping to look at the label interrupts that context - and doesn’t assist in developing that muscle memory of the right hand that will, over time, help your hand learn where the notes are without having to look. It’s almost always enough to know that the melody note you’re seeking is either higher or lower than the note just before it. If it’s higher, you aim your picking finger further up toward the higher strings. If it’s lower, you move your finger down toward the lower strings. Your ear tells you 1) if the note is higher or lower and 2) if you hit the right one. The individual notes within each chord are generally widely spaced, with very often two or three strings in between each one. In addition, all the strings between the notes in the chord are muted, so the odds of hitting the right note is pretty high. Trial and error, using the ear as a guide, teaches the right hand the structure and layout of the string bed in a short amount of time so that you progress faster. I do agree that having the names of the specific notes in the melody might be helpful to some. However, my experience with new players has found that for the vast majority this is just too much information, particularly for those with no musical experience at all. Knowing when to change chords and which chord to play is usually enough - and in addition, it teaches the new player to begin developing their ear to learn the music which is essential in becoming and effective player.

      Hi, Jholine. You need to have an expert look at your autoharp before you do anything else. There are a number of things that could be causing these issues, but only someone with a lot of experience can give you a diagnosis - and in order to do that, they would need to see the autoharp. The Autoharp Group on Facebook would be a good place to find someone who can guide you in this regard.

      @@jholinemoore3501 I seem to remember something about Lark In The Morning offering an autoharp model that was a "build-it-yourself" kind of kit. Perhaps that is the kind you have, and if so it would be a chromatic. The thing with autoharps is that they are all chromatic when you first buy them (unless it's a custom-made 'harp) and then people convert them to a diatonic -- which means you change the tuning of the strings in order to make the autoharp play in only one or two keys. This improves the sound quite a bit -- but it also limits the number of keys you can play in. To answer your question, YES, you can play Southwind on a chromatic autoharp.

      @@jholinemoore3501 I always recommend that new autoharp players start on a chromatic autoharp. The chromatic setup teaches you the foundations of playing. Diatonic playing is another skill set that builds on top of the chromatic skills. So you need to learn the chromatic first.
