    The hobby isn't booming in terms of sales because people aren't home due to COVID anymore, and they don't have stim money. This is more or less how the hobby felt before COVID.
    I have the privilege of checking out a lot of cool things in this space, and sure, some of it is boring, but there are WAY more cool projects now at better price points than ever before, with a bunch of cool new features. That being said, I do feel like this video is misleading. You only spoke to content creators. Content creators, while passionate about the hobby, have a different horse in the race (creating videos about their interests, among other things). I mean, you mentioned in the video that it's creator burnout, and I feel like that's what this video actually is.
    I urge you to talk to vendors, designers, and even community members, both new and more seasoned. They can provide a totally different perspective on the hobby, giving your topic ("Is the hobby dead?") more solid answers. I love the idea of the video, though! I just think it needs a bit of a different lens to not get muddied with the idea of making content about the hobby rather than the hobby, I hope this make sense! Also super dope editing and quality.
    Cheers!

      Thank you for this comment alexotos! Love your work :)
      I've seen this sentiment echoed around a little so i do believe it carries some weight, and I do think that the sample size was way too small and not varied enough. I did worry about this while making the video but i tried to remain objective and work with what i had so i hope i still did a semi-good job of summing up peoples burnout as well!
      The original idea was to bring the comments/ the things the content creators said TO the manufacturers in order to see their take on that, because it feels a little weird to me to ask keeb designers why they think their designs and keyboards aren't doing well or aren't selling well, maybe thats just me but i would hate for someone to tell me my design is unoriginal and thats why its not selling or that my design is amazing but the hobby around it has slowed so the potential of people buying is less.
      Either way i could talk about this for hours but i do largely agree with your comment, thank you for bringing this to my attention and i'll do better in the future! :)

    • @Poesjuh
      @Poesjuh 8 месяцев назад +2

      @Amiro05 While the video does sum up the burnout it also just sums it up for a small group of content creators. And while that perhaps is true for many of them, concent creation is only a small part of the hobby though. Even in this group that is apparently burned out, most of them still enjoy building a keyboard. The majority of the community isn't a conent creator but do build keyboards and hopefully enjoy using them.
      Edit: I do think this video shows a part of the “pain” the hobby is in right now imo. And that is that it’s inherently repetitive. Only so many form factors etc there are.

    Very well done video! I think Coley definitely summarized it the best, there's really never been more people into keyboards and getting into keyboards. A lot of those people are satisfied and have hit temporary end game which is totally okay and a natural progression of a hobby lifecycle.
    The creator burnout definitely has hurt the content space quite a lot, I miss making videos with my friends :(

I loved my time in this community, but eventually for me the content side, the youtube shorts, and other factors drew me away. I think the ingenuity and community is still here, but the ebb and flow of life effects it all. Listen to the creators, listen to yourself, and decide what you want from there. Im hella burntout from school, and had to write 3 essays today so sorry if my writing sucks.

    great video dude. As a small content creator, creativity is for sure limited by money. As a newcomer, I really wanted more good full sized keyboards. Most of the keyboards are made cheaply and with proprietary software instead of QMK/VIA/Vial. I'd be willing to spend $600 on a good heavy full sized keyboard, but they just don't exist, and the ones that do exist aren't full size, or they don't have QMK, or they don't have RGB, or they aren't actually 100%. The end game full size is either Keychron Q Max or Monsgeek M5.

    I wished you talked to a few keyboard designers such as ai03. The oversaturation of keyboards and switches were the main reason why I got into the ergo side of the mechanical keyboard community. A lot of the keyboard designs over there are so special and creative compared to what we're getting for regular keyboards. Not to say regular keyboards are bad, but every release is just getting stale unfortunately.

    Great video but I think everyone is missing part of the point and why some of these creators are back after their break. The price decreases are bad for creativity and generating the boredom you mention... however they are driving down costs and bring new people into the hobby. Those people are looking for content and I believe will eventually drive that innovation. I play guitar and have a small guitar channel, but look to add some keyboards when I can. I'm not making money anyway so it doesn't matter for me like it does the larger creators. However there are some very large creators that have add a lot of various content. I think that might be part of the solution. Sure they might not make the $$$ on a video about something else but then do a keyboard one. Go back and forth, income will go down somewhat but over time those videos might even split to a second channel... Against excellent video and production, once I can figure some of that out I hope to post more myself, great work!

    The way I solved my burnout (in my case feeling bored by the repetitiveness of the scene) by designing my own keyboards. That way I can use my creativity isnt limited to arranging parts from the market and actually using my brain leading to infinite possibilites.
    I really think more people should learn design and manufacturing, or atleast design and leave the manfacturing to someone else. I really believe that it can be a solution to the feeling of burnout some people are experiencing.

    I feel like this could apply to any kind of hobby in general; interest in anything can waver from time to time, and (most importantly) that's okay and normal. You can always come back to it whenever you feel inspired again and that's the beauty of hobbies, something that isn't an obligation like a job. For reference, I actually started the hobby more than a decade ago, went into a long hiatus, and came back during the pandemic. It's slowly starting to taper down again because I got my grail keyboard, but I don't think I'll ever completely lose out interest.

    this is a creative video and the work on it is great. however, the point that is trying to be made seems to be wrong. its an opinion of the few who directly work on trying to make something out of the keyboards for conten. this make point being made from my understanding is to apply their burnout from content creation around keyboard to the entirety of the hobby. this seemed to be the conclusion being made with the inclusion of squashy's comment towards the end. so is this a video about the keyboard hobby/community or the content creators and their work within the scene?

    • @Amiro05
      @Amiro05  8 месяцев назад

      I set out to create a video about the stagnation of the hobby since the 2020 boom and why its happening, and i do feel that i did split keyboard burnout and youtube burnout effectively, but i totally see where you're coming from with the sample size being too small and too similar for the interviews, so the answers might be skewed. Im not sure if that makes the videos point wrong per se, but i could def see it being in favor of one type of burnout more than the other

    For those who are feeling burnt out, have they taken a look at the ergo/split/opensource market? I was initially getting bored of the same formats but getting into split keyboards reinvigorated my interest in the hobby. It makes going back to a standard keyboard layout exciting again too since it feels entirely different going from a corne LP wireless keyboard to something like my wooting.

    I'm at the point where I found the keyboard I'm looking so the only thing I dabble in now is swapping and trying out a ton of switches and keycaps. To me it's only the building the main board part of the hobby is dead. But some switch manufacturers are slowly focusing on magnetic hall effect switches now like gateron might be another spark for me to try and find a custom keyboard that accepts magnetic hall effect switches. But a part of me wants custom keyboard companies to start making magnetic hall effect compatible PCBs on their existing custom keyboards that would save me a ton of cash hahahah.

    Its a personal fulfillment in life issue. Idunno maybe its existential thing too, especially with content creators, the problem is they are on the extreme end not everyone is building a keyboard every day, week or month. Because they are around them 24/7 they put themselves in that predicament to the point they get sick of it.
    Creative restriction sure exist as a mental thing but honestly I also think it's dependent on how well a creator knows their audience or how they can reposition their content and appeal to them and newer audience an excellent example of this is Mr.Fruit he was a Destiny Content creator to managed to sprinkle variety here and there and now is a variety streamer or even ProZD he makes videos that he thinks is fun or despite the views, of course he also still does make banger hilarious videos still too. or how to innovate and make fun videos in their like Glarses. Its literally in the creators own hand they have to evolve and adapt, rather than churn out same content, I mean thats why alot of Ytubers are retiring its cause they put themselves in those situations.
    Side note having multiple hobbies helps, you can cycle thru them in phases. I play video games, build model kits, TCGs, Keyboards, work on my car and etc... sometimes its good to take a break on one hobby and come back to it later as well.

    This video was incredible amiro! what an all-star cast. the fact some incredibly large creators still found time to be in your video says a ton about you as a person (incredible to work with) and also about how kind the folks in this hobby can be. i would love to see some big innovations that get longterm creators excited, and also something so big that new creators join in. i would also love to see more collaboration like this video, which will spark more creativity in terms of content.
    My journey in the hobby was an incredible one, I accomplished everything i set out to do (meet my heroes, work with my favorite keeb brands, even make a switch! how incredibly lucky i've been), and i am eternally grateful. i still build keebs and tinker on my end, and my burnout was more of a youtube one than a keyboard one. though the freedom to make videos about ANYTHING outside of keyboards was expressed in this video and i really agree. I’ve been out of the keyboard hobby for about a year now and occasionally browse just to see what’s going on in the community. Two factors played a part in this happen for me.
    1. I got a board I liked enough to make building other boards harder to justify, which in turn decreased my interest in what’s coming out in the future.
    2. Unlike other hobbies, keyboards is a very hard sell as the type of hobby you get into for extended period of time (like a decade). Comparing it to something like the audiophile (specifically headphones and sources) community, both hobbies are based around desktop peripherals, but audio gear seems to have more dimensionality on differences and how they can be enjoyed compared to keyboards that’s able to keep people in the community for longer.
    I still love keyboards and love the thought of building keyboards. But it will never really be the same as when you just built your first entry level board and wanted to explore more and more about the nuances of the hobby.

    I mean asking Hamaji i couldve told you what his answers would be. His content pattern on youtube reflects it perfectly. Id say the reactions to this video are more telling than the video itself.

    • @Amiro05
      @Amiro05  7 месяцев назад +1

      I mean, you can't just assume what his answers are, hamaji had many great answers and points and i'll release a video of just the full interviews soon where you'll be able to see everything he said not just the cut up bits :)
      Now the reactions to the video bit i can understand, alot of people reacted mainly to the title, and then they reacted to the fact that I interviewed creators, it seems it wasnt great judgement on my part to interview creators without explaining why i chose them specifically, the short explanation of it is: i chose creators for part one because i want to bring their advice to the manufacturers and designers, and see if maybe we can innovate in the keyboard scene using our answers, I'm glad you brought this up

    • @stephenpena7813

      @Amiro05 oh no I get you and I'm not trying to talk down on the video. You obviously put tons of work into it and I can definitely appreciate that. What I find ironic about some of the negative feedback you're getting about interviewing content creators is that those same people look to alot of these creators for their views on products and such but are up in arms about you doing the same for this video lol

    As a content creator I have to say, It's very tiring having to film, edit, publish, and sometime it's tiring to create a entire review, I stop enjoying the keyboard so I have to create content and sometimes I end up getting bored, and I'm not even closer to the giant content creators that u had enterviewed... what I did after take 2 months break is to enjoy the proccess while I'm filming... I think it helped me, and also I stop to push myself to release more and more content, today I release a new video when i'm ready to enjoy the keeb, not only to create a new content...

    For me, KB has just plateau as an avg guy who just buy like maybe 1-2 custom.
    Majority of main keebs kinda just follows the formula of full aluminum or W/E materials, X/Y/Z options of plates, weights, knobs if avail. And then like if that stuff ain't under $300, what makes the higher cost so special, etc.
    Key caps are just in the trenches due to GB.
    Switches are the only cool thing IMO with all different flavors, or tech like optical/HE.

    I would say it's also because you have 10 different manufacturers with 10 different software installs. Why would I want to pollute my computer with 10 different pieces of software. There are great boards that have come out but I am not buying any of them unless they support at least VIA. That way I can install one piece of software and enjoy 10 different brands. My thought is community leaders should refuse to review a keyboard if it lacks VIA. Heck even the RK61 supports QMK/VIA at $40 so I know it's not a cost thing. Keychron's cheapest board at $36 supports it. I immediately stop watching a video as soon as I see it doesn't have via support or I don't even watch it if I go look first and it's s missing.

    • @thestreamreader
      @thestreamreader 6 месяцев назад

      So the hobby has to become more unified or people by less boards and watch less content. It has to become easier to become a collector and software support is one aspect.

    The only thing holding me back from enjoying keyboard hobby is the absurd cost of it after spending almost a 600$ dollar, even though there is a lot new affordable board but I don't think building it is satisfying compared to a real custom keyboard.

    • @Amiro05
      @Amiro05  8 месяцев назад

      Oooo that's actually very understandable, the money restriction in the hobby when it comes to high end "scams" (things that aren't passion project or innovative) having inflated price tags is terrible, and does take away from my enjoyment of thr hobby.
      But when its a really expensive to manufacture keyboard and the design is one worthy of the price, i can understand that

    The keyboard hobby completely fails gamers, when gamers are the only available growth market. Gamers want low latency, north facing shine thru PBT keycaps, bios mode, media keys, software that doesn't suck, software that doesn't require custom firmware coding, silent switches for streaming or voicechat. These are all the things keyboard hobbyists ignore or dislike. That's why the hobby is dead.
