For me, I really wanted to see the open case back on my Speedy. Plus, when I factored in how much money the Speedy costs now days (regardless of which version), I felt like the sapphire crystal version was a more practical way to go for such an expensive watch. Still, I can appreciate the view of more traditionists who prefer the watch more so in its original design with the Hesalite. Either way, it's a great watch!
Hesalite and solid case back. just love the more utilitarian look and feel... fully agree with you on this. Speedmaster professional isn't a dress watch. Also agreed, "tool" watches look best unpolished... submariners look great with scratches both on the watch and the bracelet as well. It's character.
Chose the sapphire because the hesalite would've been nightmare to maintain and I was proven right since I banged my 3861 here and there during the day and the sapphire glass remains scratch free. I am not a big fan of the open back ironically. I just hate adding more points of weakness.
I get the whole argument for Hesalite and wanting to get the "full flavour" of the original but then why not pay less for an older model? The 3861 with co-axial is so far detached from the 321 movement that some people refused to accept it as a true Moonwatch anyway. If you are already getting all the quality of life improvement why not have the design case back and scratch resistance dome (if the price is not an issue)? :D Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the round profile of the Hesalite top compare to the squashed down flattened Sapphire top but that just the aesthetics. I mean let's be honest here. Even if Space Tourism becomes a thing within our lifetime, I am sure they won't complain if I wear my Sapphire sandwich. :D
It seems like you're putting in a lot of effort to convince yourself and others that you made the right decision with your speedy. I can appreciate the historical significance and being faithful to the original design, but I have to say, your reasoning about the open case back and hesalite doesn't quite make sense. While I understand the sentiment of not minding a few scratches because it shows that you're wearing the watch, saying that you specifically like to have Hesalite because you like scratches seems a bit perplexing. It's one thing to embrace the signs of wear as part of the watch's story, but actively seeking out scratches by choosing a particular material seems counterintuitive. Of course, personal preferences play a significant role when it comes to watches, and everyone has their own unique tastes. Cheers.

100% agree; I own, wear-daily, and enjoy the 3861 hesalite; I believe this reference remains closest to its operational significance.

I eventually went with the sapphire because of this reason.
👌
