I agree! Like you said, bad endings give the illusion (sometimes even more than that) of choice, on top of making things feel more real. After the precedent has been set, you know people aren't safe in the future, either, and it makes stories much less predictable. Not everyone can have a happy story.
Before Star Rail was released people speculated that it would be a more goofy and light-hearted Hoyo game. They didn't know about the "uplifting and wholesome" story that awaited them.
I feel like we're still in the honeymoon phase with HSR, but I do love how willing the devs are to improve the game and listen to the players. Simulated universe was my favorite mode at the start and they've just kept on building on it in really cool ways. Also autobattle is so incredibly nice to have in a gacha game where you have to do repeated content in order to improve your account.
Tbh, the honeymoon phase kinda fell off for me around cocolia fight; yeah, the devs are really cool at giving us free rewards, but their has been enough time, and consideration by the devs to fix and critic certain issues from the maiden launch, and because of that, I feel like we have gone past that point, and getting into more of a norm period, with QOL fixes that genshin had to wait till around 2-3 years to see a glimpse of. Also, even if this was still technically apart of the maiden voyage, the feelings torwards the game has def changed, and penacony was the refresher the game needed since 1.6 was a little stale. While we’re probably still in the maiden voyage, I’m pretty sure the honeymoon phase is over, and now, we’re getting to the real Honkai star rail.

HSR was a game I wasn't actually expecting to really enjoy and stick with. I tried Genshin Impact when it first came out and I couldn't get past a few hours of playing it. Unfortunately my tolerance of Paimon is practically zero so yeah...I couldn't vibe with it. So when HSR was announced and I learned it was a turn based game, as a long time RPG player I decided I'd just try it out for the heck of it, never really planning on sticking with it. Here I am, nearly a year later still playing daily with no plan on stopping lol.

As both genshin player and hsr player, both comments confuse me. Both game are beautiful in their own ways. Genshin fighting system are what i like the most, despite enemy being such a pain to deal with in the abyss. Hsr are more chill. I mean both game have different kind of story so i guess its perfectly fine for one to think one is better than another, but again, its a different story I like the rewards on hsr more, but love genshin as a game more. Its really up to your preferences i guess

And once the baseline powerlevel for the average team a players is assumed to have is leagues away from what older units can offer alot of people might get very frustrated with the game and just stop.
