Cowboy Bebop has one of the strongest and most exciting soundtracks ever recorded, wildly ecclectic and yet strangely cohesive. This was the first release from the series, but the full OST actually consists of four LPs (Cowboy Bebop, No Disc, Blue, and Future Blues)and three EPs (Vitaminless, Ask DNA, and Cowgirl Ed), over five hours of material recorded by teams in Japan, New York, and Paris under the auspices of composer Yoko Kanno. I'd definitely recommend pursuing more.

The director/ creator (shinichiro watanabe) made the composer (yoko kanno) tour america and attend different jazz shows all around the country before he let her create the soundtrack. He wanted her to bring a truly authentic American jazz sound to the ost …….absolute brilliance
re: the chat question of cowboys being associated with harmonica and guitar: a lot of American folk music throughout the 1800s tended to get a lot of play on guitar, harmonica - really anything that was reasonably portable. It kinda seems like a given mental image, but the idea of a cowboy sitting around a campfire with a guitar or harmonica isn't far off from the reality of things. The banjo also gets some of this same stereotype because it was also a fairly portable instrument. All throughout the 1800s settlers from the Eastern U.S. moved westward, and portable instruments - particularly ones easier to learn such as the harmonica - came with them as a form of entertainment. The intermingling of European immigrants from the East and the local Mexican and Spanish cultures also lent to the development of the Norteño styles of music in the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. After the Civil War, some of these instruments - like guitar and harmonica - would also become associated with African American folk songs due to their popularity and relative availability throughout the U.S., and became staple instruments in early blues (and then someone invented an amplifier for guitars, and helped along the evolution of blues into rock and roll!) Because these instruments became so strongly associated with that time period and the mid- and south-western U.S., it would have been a bit silly not to use them in American Western films and media - even if Blues or Norteño or other new styles might have been anachronistic. They're very representative of the musical 'spirit' of the Wild West.
God, this was a trip, I forgot how deeply ingrained in my soul this is, If you haven't already, (I will be checking) I definitely echo the sentiment of others to check out the rest of the OST, there's so much gold you didn't touch on in this one.
Cowboy Bebop was produced by Sunrise and aired from April to June 1998, with some of the series' 26 episodes. In September 2001, a theatrical version, Cowboy Bebop: Door to Heaven, was released. It won the TV award at the 3rd Kobe Animation Festival in November 1998, and the Nebula Award in the Media category at the Japan Science Fiction Convention in 2000. Set in the solar system centered on Mars in 2071, this space western anime follows the adventures of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and his crew as they travel aboard the dilapidated spaceship, the Bebop. It features stylish dialogue, cool visuals, and thrilling mecha and gun action. The main story has a hard-boiled touch, but the style varies depending on the episode, with a wide range including suspense, horror, slapstick comedy, and cyberpunk. As the title "Bebop" suggests, the series uses a variety of music genres, including jazz, blues, rock, and techno, and this, combined with its unique worldview, creates a unique style that was not seen in existing science fiction works. Director Shinichiro Watanabe said, "I made this by putting in everything I had wanted to do up until then but couldn't," and "I thought I was making a 20-minute movie each time." When it was first broadcast, many people said it was similar to "Lupin the Third," but according to Watanabe, it is more similar to the TV drama "Detective Story," starring Yusaku Matsuda, which was popular in Japan in the 1970s (including the narration for the next episode preview). Another feature of this work is that the racial characteristics of the characters are well reflected in the design of the world setting. According to character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, this was because director Watanabe gave permission. The production was handled by Sunrise Studio 2. The core staff was made up of people from the network of Watanabe and producer Masahiko Minami, who had previously been involved in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Macross Plus, and Escaflowne. After the TV series was produced, Minami and his team left Sunrise to found Bones, which produced the film. Sunrise is originally a studio that produces many original robot animes with the intention of commercializing toys, but the idea for this work also came from an offer from Bandai Hobby Division, who saw a spaceship boom coming with the resurgence in popularity following the release of the new Star Wars trilogy, to make an anime that could be developed into spaceship plastic models. When Minami asked Watanabe if he had any ideas, he was inspired by the work of American bounty hunters and immediately came up with an idea for a stateless action movie set in space in the near future. The concept was "space jazz" rather than space opera, and the project title was "Shooting Star Bebop!" . However, the unique style of the work was met with a negative response from those around, and it was almost lumped together with another project that Sunrise was working on at the same time. The sponsor almost dropped the project, saying, "This won't sell spaceships," but with the cooperation of Bandai Visual, the show was able to be aired. The record company releasing the soundtrack opposed the idea, saying, "How many jazz records do you think sell in Japan?" (Music director Yoko Kanno also said that she initially thought, "Jazz will never sell"), and those involved who watched the first episode before it aired commented, "It's too dull. It won't sell." With no prospect of royalty income from the toys, a detailed plan was devised to recoup the investment through music CDs and video packages. As a result, the software was a hit, and Sunrise stated that this work "achieved sales of videos and music CDs comparable to those of the Gundam series." According to producer Minami, the production costs were so high that the president of Sunrise said to him, "Minami, are you trying to ruin the company!?" The opening and ending songs and background music in the film were all composed by Yoko Kanno, with the exception of a few, and performed by The Seatbelts, a group that included Kanno and other musicians from Japan and abroad. In addition to the ending song, vocal songs were used extensively. The first soundtrack won the Animation Album of the Year award at the 13th Japan Gold Disc Awards. The theme song, Tank!, was used in the short program of Canadian male single skater Kevin Reynolds at the 2016 Canadian Figure Skating Championships (with costumes by Spike Spiegel). The terrestrial broadcast version was subject to self-censorship, and violent and sexual content, as well as flashing lights, were revised or cut. This was due to the fact that between the start of production and the broadcast, there were violent crimes committed by minors, such as the Kobe serial child murders and the Tochigi female teacher stabbing incident, and TV Tokyo's regulations were strengthened due to the "Pokémon Shock." The final episode, a compilation titled "Yoseatsume Blues - A Collection Blues," is a protest against these restrictions and cuts in the form of monologues by the main characters, and unlike regular compilations, it makes almost no reference to the story itself. The ending concludes with the provocative message, "THIS IS NOT THE END. YOU WILL SEE THE REAL "COWBOY BEBOP" SOMEDAY!" This episode has been excluded from subsequent rebroadcasts and has not been included on video software such as DVDs. In the United States, the series was first released on video and DVD, and was broadcast nationwide (TV-14: ages 14 and over only) on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim slot from September 1, 2001, where it gained popularity. However, the depictions of fake blood and naked women were edited out for this broadcast, and episodes 6 (as they were reminiscent of the Columbine High School shooting), 8 (hijacking), and 22 (building bombing) were not broadcast on the first episode due to broadcasting codes and the influence of the September 11 terrorist attacks (though they were aired in a rerun immediately after). The evolution of the theme songs is as follows 😌 Opening theme "Tank!" Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS) Ending theme "THE REAL FOLK BLUES" Lyrics by Yuho Iwasato / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane "SPACE LION" (#13) Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS) "BLUE" (#26) Lyrics by Tim Jensen / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane Here's the OST 😀 [COWBOY BEBOP SOUNDTRACK 1] Released May 21, 1998 (VICL-60201) Won the Grand Prize in the Animation Album category at the 13th Japan Gold Disc Awards. For your anime opening reactions, I want to put Wolf Rain's Stray opening out there. Not many people react to it. It's a depressing anime to watch but the animation is gorgeous and I love the opening song.
This Cowboy Bebop OST is really reminding me of Skullgirls, I think you would really enjoy that game's OST. I read the description btw, I play piano ^.^
I really recommend you listening to all of the other albuns of Cowboy Bebop, if you think this one's good, just wait until you listen to what they saved for later on
You definitely need to check out the composer's other works. Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Apollon) also has a jazz-inspired soundtrack, just a different flavor. And it is largely covers of existing classics. But my absolute favorite is definitely Terror in Resonance (Zankyou no Terror). Every song original, every song a banger, and it features some of the weirdest soundscapes. From a very obvious Sigur Rós influence, to the more debatable (but still clear IMO) Hans Zimmer style.
yo if i would recommend another banger hidden gem indie game OST : - Furi (99% all boss music) - Katana Zero (Cyberpunk/Blade Runner vibes) - VA-11 HALL-A (probably the most chill OST i've ever heard with some killer E-Guitar) seeing you react to one of those 3 would be great.
You sir are doing it right! Most times react channels interrupt what they are watching/listening to comment way too often instead of honestly engaging with what they have been recommended. It always seem like they are uninterested, sometimes missing the point entirely. See you Space Cowboy!
Is there a part 2 for this OST reaction? This obviously isn't the whole score. It's missing Green Bird, The Real Folk Blues, and See You Space Cowboy, among others.
super great stuff!! i'd love it if you reacted to the OST of Akira, but unfortunately it seems like half the songs on that are in copyright hell on here.
cowboy bebop is an icon of anime music. there's a lot of stigma, especially in the western world, against music in modern media and it's always refreshing to see these great arrangements be recognized and appreciated :) Attack On Titan is another anime with a mind-blowing soundtrack - although very different from this one - if you want something else to consider checking out in the future
Im pleasantly surprised that youre getting into anime osts, since there are some really good ones out there. I would definitely recommend checking out the attack on titan ost!
would you react to skullgirls ost? every track on that soundtrack slaps. it ranges from 1920s, to jazz, and eventually *magical girl*. its quite a fun ost to explore.

Ooh, you do anime soundtracks too! I discovered you a couple days ago via your video game soundtrack reactions, and had been considering suggesting this even just based on those, but now with the data point of this video's existence I'm *definitely* going to suggest: the Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] movie scores, especially the second one.
There are two soundtracks that I think would be really interesting to analyze. The first is the OneShot OST. It has a really heavy feel, and I'd love to see you analyze it. The second is the Lisa soundtrack. It has some of the most bizarre sounding music in any OST ever, and it's just kind of insane overall.
There is also a female vocal version of _Rain_ that was actually on the show, but this male version is my _absolute favorite_ on the soundtrack. But I also love _Bad Dog No Biscuits_ just for being their _SKA!_ song.
Please do JoJo’s bizarre adventure next, the music is so good and a lot of fun to listen to. Gets you into the moment for what’s happening in the show.
I'm enjoying this series so far but I have two questions: Is there still a possibility for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth OST to be covered in this series? And would you check out Inscryption OST? I would be very glad if you could do any of those one day :)
COSMOS is the sort of thing you would expect to hear in the background of a romantic dinner for two date :) Candlelight.. nice clothes.. in penthouse with city skyline lit up and rising (or setting) moon
Should someone tell "BestMusicCoach" that there are 4 Seatbelts albums of Cowboy Bebop's music composed by Yoko Kanno? Like... this isn't even a quarter of the music related to Cowboy Bebop.
An OST makes more sens if you watch the anime and understand the deep meaning of the story whitch is telling to you. So you need to watch the animation series and films.
i was a big fan of Tank...when I was 14. Had it on every burned CD and mp3 player for a couple years. gotten over it haven't gotten over that either, it's not on my bebop playlist. it was a good song but i over-indulged, like your friend who can't do flavored vodka.
If you're going to do something like listening to the full Persone 5 OST, you've got to come back to the other albums for this. It's just not the complete experience without hearing all the songs that are in Cowboy Bebop.
I'd love to see you react to some of the Dragon Quest OSTs. Obviously not all of them but it might be interesting to listen to a variety to get a sense of how the music evolved with the series.
To follow up, some jojo’s bizzare adventure themes/openings from the anime are cool too, and some other sonic games in general might be enjoyable to you.
I still remember the scene wheb space lion plays. It the one where Ed leaves the Bebop forever, she scawled a goodbye message on the deck of the bebop, and spike is standing on the inside smoking a cigarette reading it. I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop in over a decade, and still remember that scene.

Because these instruments became so strongly associated with that time period and the mid- and south-western U.S., it would have been a bit silly not to use them in American Western films and media - even if Blues or Norteño or other new styles might have been anachronistic.
Simply put cowboy bebop sound track is beastly!
Just so you know there is a female vocal to rain as well.
It won't sell."
With no prospect of royalty income from the toys, a detailed plan was devised to recoup the investment through music CDs and video packages. As a result, the software was a hit, and Sunrise stated that this work "achieved sales of videos and music CDs comparable to those of the Gundam series." According to producer Minami, the production costs were so high that the president of Sunrise said to him, "Minami, are you trying to ruin the company!?"
The opening and ending songs and background music in the film were all composed by Yoko Kanno, with the exception of a few, and performed by The Seatbelts, a group that included Kanno and other musicians from Japan and abroad.
This was due to the fact that between the start of production and the broadcast, there were violent crimes committed by minors, such as the Kobe serial child murders and the Tochigi female teacher stabbing incident, and TV Tokyo's regulations were strengthened due to the "Pokémon Shock." The final episode, a compilation titled "Yoseatsume Blues -
A Collection Blues," is a protest against these restrictions and cuts in the form of monologues by the main characters, and unlike regular compilations, it makes almost no reference to the story itself.
The evolution of the theme songs is as follows 😌
Opening theme "Tank!"
Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS)
Ending theme "THE REAL FOLK BLUES"
Lyrics by Yuho Iwasato / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane
"SPACE LION" (#13)
Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS)
"BLUE" (#26)
Lyrics by Tim Jensen / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane

...Sorry for the long message 😅
there's so many more songs from the rest of the ost i'd love to see you react to, like Goodnight Julia, Blue, and Mushroom Hunting
Rain, Spokey Dokey, Tank, and Rush
are my favorite from this ost
I hope you one day react to the rest of the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks.
Definitely, not just easy to find those… I did hunt down mines quite a while.
I read the description btw, I play piano ^.^
i hope he listens to the rest of bebop's ost. there are so many great pieces in the blue compilation
I really recommend you listening to all of the other albuns of Cowboy Bebop, if you think this one's good, just wait until you listen to what they saved for later on
There are more discs and every disc is unique and so good. but sadly, we have only the first one here
You definitely need to check out the composer's other works.
From a very obvious Sigur Rós influence, to the more debatable (but still clear IMO) Hans Zimmer style.
piano black feels like when you're chillin' in a cafe while running to work 😂
I think you’d really enjoy listening to the Outer Wilds ost, Would definitely recommend.
yo if i would recommend another banger hidden gem indie game OST :
- Furi (99% all boss music)
- Katana Zero (Cyberpunk/Blade Runner vibes)
- VA-11 HALL-A (probably the most chill OST i've ever heard with some killer E-Guitar)
seeing you react to one of those 3 would be great.
all good suggestions.
Hotline Miami too.
What if I told you the show had five more albums to its OST?
super great stuff!! i'd love it if you reacted to the OST of Akira, but unfortunately it seems like half the songs on that are in copyright hell on here.
Well now you definitely have to listen to the Cuphead soundtrack lmao. Lots of big band and ragtime vibes. Actually amazing
Zelda and Cuphead music would be great soundtracks to check out!
I recommend giving a listen to the Made in Abyss OST by Kevin Penkin sometime, definitely one of my favorites 🙏
Oh this is gonna be good
cowboy bebop is an icon of anime music. there's a lot of stigma, especially in the western world, against music in modern media and it's always refreshing to see these great arrangements be recognized and appreciated :) Attack On Titan is another anime with a mind-blowing soundtrack - although very different from this one - if you want something else to consider checking out in the future
You've listen too much of these osts and i tell you, _youre gonna carry that weight_
The lady who composed this ost didn’t even have a music background either….. just a natural genius….. Kano is a goddess
Yoko Kanno didn't have a _jazz_ background, but she was a borderline child prodigy at composing and arranging
@@JonahLoebyes she was talented at music but she was never schooled in the discipline. She just knew it’s what she was born for. Her degree was for some nonsense that had nothing to do with music. I can play three instruments but that doesn’t mean I have been “schooled” in music . Know what I mean??
No idea where im supposed to do this but I gotta recommend the outer wilds ost + the echoes of the eye ost.
Yokko Kano travelled across the US. Visiting lical Jazz and big band venues, to get an understanding of licalized music.
You should definetly check out A Hat In Time’s soundtrack someday when you have time, it bops!🔥
I second this! a bop indeed
@@C_LT_Classic i third this
No “blue”, no “real folk blues”, no “ask dna”, “what planet is this” ……”gotta knock a little harder”….. “green bird” ……breaks my heart 😞. Watch the show fam it’s incredible
Have you listened to the other 2 discs, yet?
I’m such a fan of this channel man!
all of these tracks can be used in many type of movies.
drama movies, action movies, romance movies, horror movies. XD
You would love to hear the TRIGUN soundtrack for sure.
i know its been on your radar but i definitely recommend checking out the cuphead soundtrack!!
Oh man, glad space lion was on this. Disappointed Blue wasn't! I love these videos though! 🤙
Please do JoJo’s bizarre adventure next, the music is so good and a lot of fun to listen to. Gets you into the moment for what’s happening in the show.
Yesss
YESSSSS JOJO OH MY GOD
I can wholeheartedly recommend JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as well, it's got such a great soundtrack, it's awesome!
i feel like he might get copyright striked tho 😓
I'm enjoying this series so far but I have two questions:
Is there still a possibility for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth OST to be covered in this series?
And would you check out Inscryption OST?
I would be very glad if you could do any of those one day :)
Bad Dog no Biscuit reminds me of the clown act at a Shriner's circus :)
COSMOS is the sort of thing you would expect to hear in the background of a romantic dinner for two date :) Candlelight.. nice clothes.. in penthouse with city skyline lit up and rising (or setting) moon
I would love to see you react to the Bug Fables ost, it’s a mix of a ton of themes and is an overall a great ost.
"See you space cowboy"
I really hope some day someone will do a full cowboy bebop ost reaction. It has so much good music
The one part in Bad Dog reminded me of Madness "One Step Beyond."
I’d love to see your thoughts on the Nier: Automata soundtrack!
This and Blue Submaribe #6 had stellar soundtrack
And here I hoped to see the reaction to the full outro OST (The Real Folk Blues) :( still great though!
It you like this style of big band/jazz, then I would highly recommend the "Sam and Max: Save The World" ost. quite the listen!
Sam & Max is so fun.
Should someone tell "BestMusicCoach" that there are 4 Seatbelts albums of Cowboy Bebop's music composed by Yoko Kanno? Like... this isn't even a quarter of the music related to Cowboy Bebop.
I think you'd really like the A Hat in Time OST! It's an absolute bop
"Rain" vocals remind me of Steven Tyler
I used to watch this as a teen and barely understand what was going on lol
An OST makes more sens if you watch the anime and understand the deep meaning of the story whitch is telling to you. So you need to watch the animation series and films.
Yooo! We doing anime now? Let's goooo
P.S. Guess I could use this an opportunity to recommend the "Dorohedoro" soundtrack!
Diablo 2 Soundtrack
not sure if this was requested at all. but thing is a masterpiece
there are a lot of amazing and important tracks missing
how about some underverse ost by nyxtheshield eh?
i was a big fan of Tank...when I was 14. Had it on every burned CD and mp3 player for a couple years. gotten over it
haven't gotten over that either, it's not on my bebop playlist. it was a good song but i over-indulged, like your friend who can't do flavored vodka.
If you're going to do something like listening to the full Persone 5 OST, you've got to come back to the other albums for this. It's just not the complete experience without hearing all the songs that are in Cowboy Bebop.
There is a second version of Rain, with a female vocalist. It is even better than the male.
I'd love to see you react to some of the Dragon Quest OSTs. Obviously not all of them but it might be interesting to listen to a variety to get a sense of how the music evolved with the series.
Tank! is perfect!
will you react to the skyrim OST? :D
YES! Thanks for watching!
@@MusicTheoryforGamers nice :D i Love your content!
No Blue makes me sad, but this is amazing nonetheless
Hopefully you consider reviewing the next parts of the OST in the future
Once again suggesting sonic mania, sounds fun to bop along with you to.
To follow up, some jojo’s bizzare adventure themes/openings from the anime are cool too, and some other sonic games in general might be enjoyable to you.
ruclips.net/video/J_j1Pbk_8lk/видео.html
Check out the theme from Venture Brothers… very similar to this… I think both can trace their roots to Stan Kenton… but that’s just my opinion.
Try Lupin III some time
I still remember the scene wheb space lion plays. It the one where Ed leaves the Bebop forever, she scawled a goodbye message on the deck of the bebop, and spike is standing on the inside smoking a cigarette reading it. I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop in over a decade, and still remember that scene.
That's the scene where Call Me Call Me plays, not Space Lion.
@@Thornbloom thanks for the correction it's been so long since I've watched the series I remembered it wrong.
React to banjo Kazooie soundtrack is so good!
Could you someday make "How to play Sealed Vessel on guitar from Hollow Knight"?¿
Just asking
