  • Should you move to Mexico? Retire in Mexico? Reasons why we moved to Mexico & why we love it here.
    ►Get perks on PATREON: / tangerinetravels
    In today's Mexico vlog, we wanted to answer some questions we've been getting on our channel a lot lately. People have been wondering:
    Should I travel to Mexico?
    Should I retire in Mexico?
    Is moving to Mexico a good idea?
    Is Mexico safe?
    The list could go on. To make things easier, we compiled a list of the things we LOVE the most about Mexico and that make it a great place to retire or move. These things come from our experience traveling in almost 20 cities, 5 Mexican states, and spending nearly 6 months in the country. (And we aren't planning to leave any time soon.)
    If you're considering becoming an expat or retirement abroad, you probably have a lot of questions. What's the retirement lifestyle like? Should I move to Mexico? What's expat life like? Should I consider Latin America? Can I live as an expatriate abroad without knowing the local language?
    If you're considering retirement or moving to another country, we think it's wise to take a look at your finances and prepare a budget. Answer questions like: What's the cost of living in Mexico? Should I travel there first to find out if it's right for me? What's the immigration process like? Will I have trouble at the border? Am I ready to become an immigrant in méxico?
    Did we answer all your questions? If not, leave us a comment below.

    I live in SWEDEN now, but spent nearly two years in Guadalajara & CDMX. Before that I thought about buying a house in Spain but now I'm 100% sure I'll buy it in Mexico. Reasons: Quality of life, Quality of housing per square meter for a much better price in excellent neighborhoods. My overall bill spendings will be 390% less than in sweden and 290% cheaper than in Spain a month. So I'll be totally foolish if I let miss this opportunity. 😞

    A few observations about moving to Mexico. First, Mexico is a wonderful place, full of wonderful people. It has a rich, diverse history, culture, and geography. If you are thinking of living in Mexico there are some points to consider. First, how well do you do with change? Because Mexico is NOT the US, Canada, or other 1st World Western country. Things move slower, with less urgency than say Manhattan or London. If you are a type A personality who thinks that yelling loudly and confronting people is how to get things done, you will not like Mexico. Everyone will smile, nod their heads, say "yes", and then disappear. How are you with local celebrations? For example, in Puerto Vallarta and many other cities, the first 12 days of December are a huge celebration for the Virgin of Guadalupe. There are constant processions of pilgrims daily, church bells going off all day and into the night, fireworks, bands playing, mariachis singing, huge crowds downtown every day after around 4 pm which make it impossible to get anywhere quickly. Holy Week is also a period when usually everyone takes off and heads somewhere else - the beach usually. Dia de Los Muertos is another holiday can is really big some places and less so others. But again, depending on where you are there can be disruptions of the usual routine. Oh and the last couple weeks of December, forget about anything getting accomplished. Everyone is having posadas, street parties, business parties, and preparing for Noche Buena and then New Years. It is entirely possible that the street you live on, as well as, the street behind you and to the side of you will be blocked off for at least one all-night blowout party with a DJ, mariachis, food and drink until around 4 or 5 in the morning.
    How well do you learn languages? Do you already know some Spanish? Because that will have an impact on where you live. If you know absolutely no Spanish at all, then you should consider something other than a small town or village in the middle of somewhere beautiful but essentially devoid of English speakers. The good thing is that there are language programs in many places. In Vallarta, there are a couple of places where you can go and have a rather intensive course of practice and lessons. They usually go around 4 or 5 hours a day. Figure on around 200.00 USD for a week in a small class. There are similar programs in other towns and cities where there are large ex-pat communities. They are often run by universities.
    If you cannot speak any Spanish and have no aptitude at all for languages, then you will be happier in an area which is accustomed to more tourist trade. Likewise, if there are certain common US creature comforts that you really think essential to life, then you might want to consider an area where there are a large number of ex-pats like Vallarta, Cancun, Ajijic or San Miguel. There is where you will find the stores selling the things you want to use, the local vendors and contractors speak some English, and the professional people like lawyers, doctors, dentists, etc also are more likely to speak some English.
    If you are the kind of person who wants some sort of nightlife, think carefully about where you want to live. If you enjoy cultural events, this is another issue. Large cities like Mexico or Guadalajara have major venues for the arts but smaller places do not. So for example, Ajijic is a beautiful place and the weather is springtime all year long. The people there are very nice but if you want any entertainment beyond an amateur level, you are driving 40 plus miles to somewhere in Guadalajara. Likewise, although options have improved there, Ajijic does not have a large variety of options when shopping for items you might need say to fix a toilet or repair a window.
    Climate is another issue that affects people differently. Puerto Vallarta where I have owned a place since the 1990s is subtropical and it is lovely. But like Southern Florida for example, summers are rainy, humid [when it is not rainy], and the temps are usually in the 90s in the day and the 70s at night. This doesn't bother me at all since I grew up a sizeable portion of my life on Guam and Saipan so I am used to the weather. But if you are a gringo who turns on the air con as soon as the temperature gets above 82 and does not turn it off, you will not like your electricity bill in Puerto Vallarta or anywhere in the Yucatan for that matter during the summer.
    If you have some medical issues or come from a family where certain medical issues often pop up, you need to consider that fact as well. If you become a permanent resident, you can pay the monthly fee for IMSS coverage [around $2.50 or $3.00 USD] and receive relatively good, basic medical care including pharmacy. I know a number of people who have done this and are quite happy with it. You can also buy a private plan where the price varies depending on where you are in Mexico and the level of service. In Vallarta, Medasist offers a plan for residents, as does CMQ if I recall correctly.
    As mentioned in the video, in general costs run about a third of what the costs in the states are. But if you want, for example, meat cut in the cuts used in the US, it is more expensive since you are going to be buying from a store or butcher who caters to the foreigners. Meat cuts in Mexico and points south of there are different. Likewise, frozen foods are much less common. Anything imported is going to be more expensive. The great thing is that Mexico has wonderful fruits, vegetables, and other goodies which are much less expensive. Likewise, if you love to eat out a lot and like higher end restaurants or live in an area full of tourists, you are going to pay more for your meals than you would by eating in a place that catered to the regular folks living in your city. But that goes back to that whole, how adaptive are you?
    To give an example, I have a one bedroom apartment I own in a building with 5 other owners. I spend about 180.00 a month on all housing costs - maintenance, repairs, gardener, maid for the building, building utilities, propane, laundry services, taxes, insurance, and water. In addition, I spend 20.00 a week for my maid who cleans and does laundry, electricity runs between 15.00 and 20 USD. phone & internet is 18.00 USD, and around 50.00 USD a week on food. I do not own a vehicle, I ride the bus or take a taxi when I go anywhere. Since most places I want to go to are walkable, I walk. If they are far, [more than say 3 miles] the bus is now 52 cents and a taxi runs 3 to 5 dollars depending on distance. Now I live in a tourist area, so my costs are higher than they would be, say in Cuernavaca or Guadalajara for some things.
    In short, Mexico is a great place to live if you are willing to learn some Spanish, adapt to the local culture and customs and make friends with the people living there. But do not go there thinking everyone should be doing things your way because that is how things need to be done. Also, do your preparation. Visit different areas and get to know them. The worst thing anyone can do is go somewhere blindly and settle down only to discover that they do not like the weather in the summer or are driven crazy when the local community celebrates the Fiesta de X which goes on for 12 days of church bells, fireworks, street parties, and massive crowds.

      I agree with you guys. I'm from A.Z. also. Born and raised my wife and I have are both from small towns in arizona. And we've relocated to both cities, meaning Tucson and Phoenix. Didn't like it. Although Tucson has a lot of great, happy kind residents. But it was hard to earn a living there. So we came back to the White Mountains. And it's changed for the worse. A lot of fanatical uptight, rude, paranoid bigots live here. It's weird. No one's really friendly here. All the good people we grew up with here moved or changed into seriously paranoid right wingers! It sucks..... It does seem like America is going bad.... Anyway great video guys. Lots of info. Take care. You guys look happy.

      Mexico is vastly diverse, whether if you like to rent a fancy apt or a simple apt/house there's an option for all tastes and best thing is that you can find an excellent quality apt/house for far less the price you would pay over there. Also, I can guarantee that you will always (a-l-w-a-y-s...) find something to do or where to go whatever your preferences or needs are you will find an option, just do your research. If you want to learn or improve your Spanish you may want to search online courses, there are lots of options.

I will also let you in on a little secret, only because I do not think many people will read my reply. There is a place, and yes it is a tourist secret, which is not that far from Cancun. It is called Isla Holbox. I can tell you that it is my favorite place in the world. If you google it you will get an idea why, though the pictures do not do it justice. It is also not packed ever so you get a feel that you are in paradise. Now, don't tell anyone :)... also if you drive through Merida, take a day to go towards el Progreso wich is north of there in the gulf. If you drive east from el Progreso you will get to Chicxulub which is not only beautiful, it has the historical meaning of being the place where the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs landed

I lived with Colombians and years ago I learned Spanish mostly from Mexican friends in my home state of Texas. I made friends with one of the guys I lived with, an armed guard who wanted to learn some English because of the expat population in Medellín. The way the news talks about Mexico you'd think there would be dead bodies every 10 feet. I now love Mexico. All good points. One that you touched on where language is concerned, and is at the top of my list is the friendliness of Mexican people. When I walk down the street, or step on to public transportation, most people here look me in the eye, and we verbally greet each other. Not so back home. The climate was another big one for us moving here, and the food.....of course the food!

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  6 лет назад +2

      You are SO right. How could we miss that one! People are incredibly friendly here. "Buenos dias!" "Buenas tardes!" Hellos when you walk into a restaurant, good byes when you leave, etc. It's like all people can do to avoid eye contact in most places in the US.

    [Insert the Step Brothers "Did we just become best friends? YEP!" meme here] This was BY FAR your best video yet. I love the fact that you're willing to be controversial (although I agree with you). There are only so many happy, sanitized, "let's take a taco tour" videos I can take before the whole channel (not yours) becomes boring.
    I was expecting some bland, non-controversial reasons why US citizens should consider moving to Mexico, but y'all went full HAARP and economic collapse on us. This was an absolute homerun video, and you are officially my favorite "Living in Mexico" RUclips channel, and making a strong case for being my favorite channel overall. Keep the honesty coming!

      This is one part of the video I disagreed with. In the area of the US I live in people are pretty good about language barriers. If you attempt to speak English ( which is the only language most people speak) we're pretty understanding. We welcome immigrants, we're understanding, but if you're going to live here please assimilate and follow the U.S. immigration laws.

    The entitlement thing really resonated with me, I am guilty as well of thinking that because I live in the U.S. I should have everything that is the latest and greatest. It only brings temporary satisfaction, then the magic goes away after you've owned it for a while and you want the next thing. We need to be more connected with the earth around us, dirt, plants, animals because the true secrets of life are found in the simple things.

    Simply ... just do it. We did over five years ago for retirement and we love, love, love it. We live on a third to half of what we did in Texas. Now we don´t worry about money, we travel the world as we want, have fabulous, kind, friends and neighbors, we enjoy a new adventure every day, enjoy springlike weather most of the year here in the mountains of Michoacan, our utilities and rent here are a third, or less, than in Texas, and we feel safer here than we ever did in Texas. It is so liberating and we will never go back! Do it, but first travel the country to know where you need to settle. Every town is different and what we like, well, you may find other needs. Do your research and homework. Join a few Mexican expat forums to learn. Fly in, take executive and first class buses to everywhere, or drive in to explore. Thanks Tangerine for being so honest and telling it like it is.

    I'm considering moving in another year... at least for 3 months to start. Watching these and other YT vlogs are very inspiring and keep me on track. I also know there are spectacular schools there. Unfortunately, for me/my child, the schools here in Oklahoma are in the bottom ranking of all the U.S. I lived in Guatemala for a year (as a teen). I went to private school there, and I had to REPEAT 10th grade because I wasn't up to par with 11th graders at the school. I know the schooling is the same in MX. Beyond that, I love the culture and can imagine a more peaceful life there in MX.

      How great that you are so dedicated to getting a good education for your child! It's important. Unfortunately we can't shed much light on the schooling system across Mexico. However, it does seem like it's quite good in Guadalajara. Most young adults we talk to are bilingual and seem very bright.

      Only bad thing about this is that the locals are being driven out due to the high cost of living that these expats are causing. Everything gets expensive and pretty soon everyone is charging dollars. Whites folks can afford it but the locals cannot. And most expats create their communities and never mingle with the locals. I see that as a form of racism. If they don't want to live amongst us, they should return to the US.

    • @ExceedX3
      @ExceedX3 5 лет назад +2

      Well I do not know where those that you comment happen, because in chapala and ajijic the expatriates help a lot to the local locals, they say they prefer to buy their food in local markets and avoid as much as possible the wal-mart, they give work to locals or they go and consume what they see in markets restaurants and you have, in addition to doing a lot of social service

      There are a lot of Anglo expats in Colombia who don't bother learning Spanish. I agree that they contribute to rising costs. I don't care for expat bubbles either. Last year in Colombia I lived with 2 security guards and 2 university students, all locals. But there are a lot of people living in different countries now. There are Mexican expats living in Colombia, and Colombian expats living in Mexico.

      I've lived in a lot of places, mostly Arizona in my 68 years. The three most recent places were Tucson, Tombstone, and Bisbee, all in Arizona. I moved to Bahia de Kino in June of 2015 and then did a short stint teaching in San Jose Del Cabo. After I got fired there I moved back to Sonora, but to Hermosillo because I lost my car in Baja. Prices in Kino are low if you don't live with the gringos. There are many and some of them have lived there for 20 years and still don't know Spanish. A reason to stay close to the U.S. is that I take a couple of psychiatric medications that are not available here and since I'm on Medicare I can get six months of two different medications for $15. I really don't want to chance changing meds but may do so if I can't continue to take care of myself and need to go to assisted living in Mexico.

    The reason my Family moved to the United States was for a "Better Life". At least that's the Believe and Hopes of Living in the USA.
    The perception of Mexican family In Mexico of you here is when we go visit them is "Look they got cars and Money and they never said we've gone a day or days with out eating". When the truth is we're Renting or paying a mortgage we struggle from paycheck to paycheck to keep what little we have and how much in Debt we are just to go show them that Used car we got from the Dealership.
    Some of my family here Owns land in Mexico yet why do they prefer to Live here and pay Monthly? Just so they dont have to warm up the water on the stove and take a shower from a Bucket instead of the shower( is NOT done all over Mexico most houses have a working shower but as A kid that's how I did things). So that we have gas coming to our houses instead of Buying off a truck who's guy is yelling "El Gaaaaaaassss!!! " over a loud speaker.
    If The hourly pay In Mexico was similar or close to what you get Here I'll be living in Mexico.
    But Mexico is a good place to Retire and live a simple life (which I miss). The information you shared is as accurate as can be.

      Tangerine Travels most of us are going through that here in the States. I mean there's some that are doing very well for themselves.
      But most Mexican households here in the states are living From Paycheck to paycheck.
      My family grew up here on Great value everything No brand names lol. Yeah we went through a Tough time. It's somewhat better now. But still most of us still hold on to that American Dream.

      I know a lot of Mexican families in my home state of Texas. Many times 2 or 3 generations are living under the same roof and they keep ties to Mexico. Last year in Colombia, other than the hostel where I spent my first 2 weeks, I didn't have hot water for showering or washing dishes, but you adjust. If you can find a job that lets you work remotely, and from a different country, that will be one way you can live in Mexico and still earn a US salary. Some people do freelance jobs. Others teach ESL and pick up private students. I have an amiga from Medellín, Colombia who makes money by teaching Spanish online via Skype. There are ways to make money online. It's not like it was 25 years ago when there really wasn't an Internet other than for universities and the military.

My GF is European and we didn't have any troubles ;) When you enter MX as European you have 3 months without any need of visa, enough time to get a job. If, for any reason you can't find you just cross any border and return back to MX for getting your new tourist permit.

      I have Flores ancestors from Spain (and distant relatives in Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico), but I would never move there. Some of my friends are married to Mexican women and are very happy. While I enjoyed my time in Colombia, a lot of the women there are *prepagos e interesadas* Not all of them though; one of my *amigas* there teaches Spanish online and says she can't stand lazy women who expect money from men. Many Brazilian women are good too. I speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I enjoyed Medellín's climate last year and I know that some places in Mexico are also at about 5,000 feet above sea level.

      but there is HARRP and weather manipulation in Mexico too. I visit Puerto Vallarta once a year and it seems to be less than Vancouver. What cities in Mexico have less weather manipulation? Cities off the ocean? The hot weather is manipulated that way too and not just the rain. It can go both ways

    Great! No everyone can get into Mexico like us citizens or Canadians. There are people that do require visas to get in. A few years ago, Mexico removed visa requirements for Colombias and other South American countries and now Mexicans are questioning the decision since there have been groups of people from South America committing crimes in many Mexican cities. Mexico is a friendly country and Mexico knows that expats have an income from the us and this income helps the local economy. Sometimes they set up businesses that help the local economy even more by creating jobs. There is a win-win situation that it is only seen by Mexican. But unfortunately the USA doesn't see win-win situations.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  6 лет назад +3

      We agree with you on the "supplementing the economy" side of things. That's why tourism is great for lots of cities. It brings in $$$ from other parts of the world, creates jobs for people, etc. Sure, that can sometimes bring crime, but it's hard to get around that.

    • @alroyce3801
      @alroyce3801 6 лет назад +3

      Tangerine Travels, just for your information. You guys have no visa requirement as us Citizens. I believe that You are in Mexico with a visitors permit for 6 months. But you don't need a visa. If you decide to become temporary or permanent residence you will have to apply for a residency permit still not a visa. I made the comment of visas requirement to highlight that Mexico has restrictions for other countries and that you guys are lucky that the USA citizens haven't got any requirement. Because you mentioned in your video that everyone can enter Mexico, which is misleading. Mexico has laws. It felt like you were encouraging anyone from anywhere to break into Mexico. I don't think Mexico wants that! Which is what the South Americans thought when Mexico took the visa requirement. Now there are issues! Tourism is great but when it is true tourism meaning when people visit and then leave!

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  6 лет назад +4

      I did feel like anyone could enter Mexico when I went to Los Algodones to get some dental work. At the border crossing there, I just walked across with a sign above me "Welcome to Mexico." No one was there to question me, no one stopped me, nobody searched me, and I wasn't asked for any documents. I was just free to walk into Mexico, no questions asked. Given that experience, I don't think it's inaccurate to say that anyone can enter Mexico. Is it breaking in if they let you walk across the border?

    • @alroyce3801
      @alroyce3801 6 лет назад +1

      Tangerine Travels, I think that you are missing the point. You were coming from the USA. They knew this, didn't they? This is why they let you in. Now I would invite you travel by plane from any city in the USA to any Mexican city. Then as soon as you arrive you will be asked to show your ID and they will also ask you questions. I'll give you another example let say that you are coming from Guatemala into Mexico. At a legal crossing location in the Guatemala - Mexico border they will also ask you for your passport and they will also question you. You guys are still lucky that Usa citizens haven't got any visa requirement to enter Mexico and yes most of the time they won't ask you anything if you're American looking guy coming from America.

    About our health system... We (México), have the most complete Vaccination program over the world, is one of the topics we fill more proud of, and the reason is because while our Medical practice is quite good (because we use mostly theory, clinic signs and symptons, mainly because we don't have as much economical resources in health institutions as in the USA) so we must practice traditional medicine by theory and deeply knowing the pathologies, because we can't send a patient to make all the loads of studies (mostly unecesary), when we ask a lab or a imagenology study, we need to support that requirement with cause of evidence that a patience will benefit himself by doing it. And is extense, great and really a wide vaccination program because again, we must prevent the more pathologies we can because the economical repercussions of treating a preventable disease costs to the country a lot, and many times even as cheap as our health system is, there are many people who can't afford even the basic of their treatment or attention.
    Our health system is overload, yet it's almost free or really cheap, depending on which institution you are affiliated. We also do have private hospitals yet they are quite expensive, but overall, health in Mexico is really cheap. It's a double edge weapon because, as a Medical Doctor, the income we have is mildly low compared to 15 years ago, but in the other hand, the population from Mexico are quite benefited, because you can now find some Pharmaceutical chains in which they count with their own Doctor (who is paid mild to low salary, about 10,000 pesos (arround 500 USD), per month, working 6 days per week, between 8 to 10 hours daily. And there are also another pharmaceutical chain in which the medical attention cost just 35-50 pesos (about 1.5 to 2.5 USD) + medicines.
    We don't have many side effects with our medicines or vaccines because we produce our vaccines or import most ones from Germany and France. Here we don't like too much the tendency about health conspiracy theories like the vaccines topic, because people are very easily influenced by every rumour, and also we still carry many "popular beliefs" that are quite absurd such as babies getting "eclipsed" when an eclipse occurs, so the pregnant women use a red ribbon arround their bellies with some needles attached to that ribbon, or like "mal de ojo", a curse about someone seeing you or wishing you bad luck or health. Or babies with "Mollera caida", refering to depressed head fontanels (quite normal in a baby until 1 to 2 years old), so they go to a "curandera" wich is like a "pseudohealth practitioner", that push and pulls the soft palate of the baby, causing a protruyent fontanel which in reality is because they damaged the meninx by causing their herniation... some hours later the babies die :/
    Mexico is great, but sadly a high amount of population is still really ignorant and credule of quackery/charlatanism. Our colleged population is still between 11 to 8%, is still increasing because actually we are a more young population with gradually higher opportunities of getting college education, but still is quite low compared to a first world country, that's our reality :/
    About the weather manipulation topic, indeed we don't have the technology, but it's reasonable that some people may use it, mostly on the USA. But I think that they main reason why you have those heat issues is mainly due 2 things. The first one is your wide deforestation process (in contraposition to Mexico which we highly value our green zones, not just for our culture, but for our prehispanic religion history), the second thing is that you may easily have seen a higher proportion of cars per habitant in the USA, than in Mexico. You may think that they are even... but that's not quite true. They seem similar just int the big cities, such as Guadalajara, Mexico City, or Monterrey, and some other mildly big urban cities, but in most of the country, the proportion between habitants and cars are not that high, compared to the USA, that means less smoke production from combustion-fuel on average thinking about the overall country.
