Great project YRTI, the spokeshave looks amazing with the zebra wood you used!
As far as making long rip cuts with Japanese saws goes, have you ever tried using small saw horses? Toshio Odate shows how to make them them in his book “Japanese Woodworking Tools” and actually shows them being used to make a long rip cut in his book “Making Shoji.”
I hope this helps. Thank you for all the work you put into your channel, it’s one of my favorites!

Thank you as always! Yes, I've been thinking to make a sawhorse or saw bench that I can even sit on to work on some minor things on my workbench. But yeah, I felt so much difference in the cutting speed between the downcut and the upcut when resawing a wide board so I just wanted to mention it somewhere and it happened to be in this video:)

I use the same drill block. It works very well in my opinion. Very small and convenient. I find you get a cleaner countersink if you spin it backwards (cuts slower but cleaner). I very much like the zebra wood. I do have a spokeshave but could use one as nice as yours, and thank you for reviewing the kit. I think I might buy one.

Thank you for the comment and the advice:) I think this spokeshave cuts well and hold the edge well for the price but I'm not sure how good it is comparing to the higher end stuff...

Thank you! This is my first time using zebrawood and I'm liking the smooth texture so much!

That's really nice. Spokeshaves are one of my favourite tools as they give you so much control over what you're doing.

Thank you! Yes, after experiencing this spokeshave, now I can see how it becomes people's favorite tool! It's very fun and already one of my favorite tools!

I like it. I've got a handful of spokeshaves, but all of the metallic variety. I've wanted to try a wooden style like this, just never taken the time to make one (I've also nearly bought several over the years, but never found myself willing to in the moment lol)

Thank you! you should try this kit. It is really good. If you think you already have too many spokeshaves, you can positively apply "too many + 1 = too many" formula, haha.

@@YRTionce the mathematical achievement of "too many" is hit, it's an infinitely inclusive term that has no count LOL

Perhaps in phycology, "you get too many + 1 = I can get whatever I want and you shut up", haha. That's what someone said.

The skill of percision is a whole lot different with a western saw, my great uncle could make perfect cuts with the western saws and just like japanese ones, he had different ones for finishing clean cuts and for taking lumber apart quickly. In my opinion it's considerably harder to make nice cuts with a push saw, although you can do it.

    • @YRTi
      @YRTi  7 месяцев назад +1

Thank you! Yes, and the western saw is kind of pricy so I'm hesitating to try it to see or learn....

Buy used, you can resharpen and rehandle western saws! There are some gems that are from the time those tools were actually a necessity and are very good quality. If you do decide to shop used keep an eye out for the ones with a etching, those were supposedly the pricier options. @@YRTi

Great job. I have been thinking of trying this kit, but i have been intimidated making the handle. Watching you make this has really given me confidence. Thanks for all the details. Keep up the great videos.

I’m glad to hear that! Hey, even if you mess it up, the hardware is good so you can make it again until you can be happy with:) I hope you enjoy making it!

You have inspired me to make the spokeshave. I have never owned one.
I have a small piece of African Rosewood that I can use for this project.

Thank you for the comment. Yeah, this kit is good! For me, I don't know if I have a capability to handle African Rosewood (it's hard) but I'm sure it will look good with the brass knobs:) Hope you make a nice one soon!

Awesome. Zebrawood is so pretty, however, I'm not sure if I like it enough to use on a project of mine....lol.

Thank you for the comment! Oh, my opinion is opposite but it's ok! Actually, this was just the hardest wood with the straight grain that I had so I used it but now I even like how zebrawood looks, haha:)

@@YRTi Did you apply a stain or is this the natural look? It is pretty.

I just put wax on it so this is natural. Very unique look!
