Hi Mr. Martian, what I’ve learned from my aquaponics plant growing is twofold. First the plants have to be started to a certain level of maturity and then transferred to the aquaponics grow bed. Second is the good growers really turn over their crops. And so they have to balance their fish and plant numbers as crops are harvested. Yes, aquaponics is very challenging and fascinating. Cheers

I love the idea of your videos, great idea and I understand that for you this is very expensive. If you shorten your videos or make them a little more concise they will be much more viewable. Just meaning some of these videos are longer and have redundancies. Taking out these makes it easier to watch, and thus you receive more revenue. This is meant purely as a help, not an isult! You and your wife have some great ideas! Love it! Keep up the good work!
Great job. You may eventually end up with pest that want to eat your plants. You may want to consider some parasitic wasp for pest control. I plan to use Aphidius colemani. Theyre very small black wasp
Do you have a video on how you can gain access to the fish below? I love the space saving idea, but how do you check on any fish deaths or even get a net down there for when it's time to harvest the fish?
I saw a guy make grow whole bunch of plants in his and he said that the lettuce always over took everything and grew out of control so much that he ended up having to throw away a lot of lettuce just to keep it off the other plans
How do you measure the amount of nutrition available in the water? If you increase the shelves (more plants), then you increase the need for more fish 💩 to feed the plants. So what do you do when you harvest the plants and have all the extra poop?

I'd imagine they don't harvest everything at once, but keep lanes at all stages from just seeded to harvestready, rotating through the lanes, so nutrient absorption is effectively constant - if nothing else to have a continuous supply of produce to their buyers...
Water isn't scarce or a depleting resource. Access is limited based on geographical location (no rainfall/groundwater) or by BS laws (rainwater collection not being allowed). I have 2, 330 gallon totes set up to collect water off of less than 1/3 of my roof. One inch of rainfall will have them overflowing. A heavy dew can even bring in a measurable amount of water.
Regarding the stacking ability of the aquaponics system: have you ever made designs as to the most space efficient layout of a farm using this technique? (Was thinking of vertical farming)
Tiny Fireball With the stands he has, it looks like he could easily go to 3 tiers and possibly a 4th in areas if he has a narrow section reserved for low growing crops like microgreens. When going vertical, shading becomes an issue that he will have to consider. Even things like the drain pipes could effect crops. Once he goes higher, a catwalk between the 2 rows would be the most likely way of accessing the upper beds. These would also have a shading effect so that would have to be taken into consideration in its design. As for the drains from the upper beds, the vertical drops would best be placed alongside the back rack legs. If he wanted his drains in the center of the bed, he would need a sloping run to the corners. He would also need pass through area added to the lower beds unless he ran the piping outside the legs. All this may be moot in his final designs since he wants it to fit inside a shipping container. The aquaculture portion couldn't be dug down like his current setup so the only way you would have room for going vertical would be if you were growing microgreens or ground hugging crops.
Thanks for the in-depth answer! Also I reckon once the whole system can fit inside a shipping container, they'll just be stacked like normal, thus fulfilling the vertical farming aspect. All you'd need then is some scaffolding and stairs/ladders to reach higher level containers.
Canadian government should be watching this. In the northern territtories Its cheaper to buy proccessed crap off amazon and get it threw their free shipping. Veggies are so expensive. Hard to eat healthy when things are hard to afford. Im sure the communities would take great pride in being self sufficent again.
For experiments and prototype building, why do you have so big greenhouse? Why not go 4 beds, and experiment with it - it will take lot less resources to sustain and any failures will hurt much less? Why not split that whole greenhouse into "rooms" and work only inside one of them, until some milestone, and then expand to other rooms afterwards in a sort of modular way, like in real world, where you would always start small and then expand?
Deele LV In some of his other videos including his previous, he discussed some of that. His ultimate goal is to reduce the size until it could fit into a standard shipping container. For now, he started with standard, off-the-shelf products instead of custom building everything so he could get started quicker and learn what would be needed to make this work. Because of his 2 challenges, I think he is going to have to bring additional beds into operation sooner than he thinks. Microgreens (fancy new name for what used to be called sprouts, just with their root section cut off) have extremely short harvest times. Most are ready in a week or less though longer in winter if not lighted and heated. In a commercial operation, you would stagger your plantings based on your delivery requirements but still a quick crop in a small area. Unless he plans to subsist entirely on microgreens those three days, he will need to plant fruits and vegetables which will require a much longer time to produce. Unless he plans on skipping root vegetables, he will most likely need to develop a few deeper beds and also see how they do growing in the pumice stone he is using.
I love every time you say 'we have a lot of work to do' because I think you already work so hard and get just so much done!
