my dear departed friend...Dave McKenna. pianist here....R.I.P. The best left hand in all of Jazz History.

Oh, Ruth... Def the "Best Left Hand"! Spent 90+ minutes with Dave 5+ nites a week with Dave@CP from mid or late '80 to '83. As soon as I finished cookin' at Arlington&Boylston or Dartmouth & Newbury... They were my "Salad Days", but in hindsight, they were easily some of my BEST days!!! Never met another Musician who could carry on a serious conversation and play FLAWLESSLY at the same time! He would he even sip his beverage and keep playin' w/o missin' a beat or note!!!

A once in a life event...two enormous talents at their best.. I met and shared a ring side table with Dave McKenna...years ago watching a mutual friend perform at the Van Dyck in Schenectady......i felt so honored to be sitting there with this great genius.....what a treat. We both were cheering on our mutual friend Rio Clemente, jazz pianist....I have been so blessed.

YES! Am equally so, as I spent many, many, many nights "Piano-Side" with Dave at The Copley Plaza from '80-'83 or so, as after Cookin' most of the night a couple blocks down Boylston across from the Public Garden@Arlington St.... Catching his last 60-90 minutes most nights. His Mastery was such that he could carry on a conversation without missing a note or disturbing his timing. Just one of the Greatest Jazz Pianists of ALL-TIME!! Bar None!!! #1. Art Tatum #2. Dave McKenna Period. Thanks, Dave!!! R.I.P. ; - )

That's GOT to be a Baby Grand that Dave McKenna's playing; he was a big guy but he absolutely dwarfs this instrument. His "Three-Handed" boogie-stride style has never been duplicated, his slower material is beautifully phrased -and boy, could he swing! Perhaps the most underrated pianist in recent Jazz history (One of my top three with Oscar Peterson and Eroll Garner). He had the "Invisible drummer" -had it all. Perfect match with Tony B'. I'd have loved to be at this event in the presence of two great musicians -but I was in Indonesia at the time!

+Brian Kate Johnstone Bobby Hackett liked to say that Dave was his entire rhythm section. Just a few years after this event I was lucky enough to become one of the Plaza Bar's (now the Oak Room again) nightly regulars after work. Six nights a week, in all kinds of weather, (which Dave would cover in his tunes) my partner and I were totally spoiled until the Plaza was sold six years later - then we had to travel up and down the East Coast to catch his gigs. He never disappointed and was always so gracious and glad to see us. They passed away barely a month apart in 2008 so my love is still following Dave all over. Miss them both more than words can say.

Bobby Hackett was one of the first true progenitors of the Bix Beiderbecke melodic style of cornet/trumpet playing and imbued it with his own licks. I'd ha' given at least one of my male attributes to have heard he and Dave McKenna playing or (especially) jamming together.

These 3 pianists are also my favourites :) All of them are wonderful and Dave McKenna had the strongest drive with his walking bass style . Love it.

I wish my wife and I were there live. We were married little more than a year on March 7, 1982. But thanks to you we have this video. And next week we will celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary. So both of us can watch this together. Thank you!

🎹 OMG! What a set! McKenna remains one of the greats. We met in London in the 70s, when we were both performing there. A genius and a real gentleman.

That is utterly beautiful. As thrilling as larger stage performances by these musical giants may've been, the more intimate sessions often open up much wider musical spaces and many more nuances.

That's where you hear most musicians at their best -apart from jam sessions. You gotta be a musician to dig this -and that's why jazz is so great. It's totally democratic and all inclusive; it's the the best way to improve -play with better musicians than you is almost the ONLY way to improve, even if you're an academic musician. Jazz musicians are the most accepting and encouraging I've ever worked with. "Come on in a give it your best shot, if you screw up that's OK- just keep going and keep com in' back".
