Hi from Germany! Thanks so much for the insights on the Minerva/Nikita-team - I didn't read any of this in the German media. It's obvious that Maya doesn't just do her job as a journalist, she takes a real interest in the people she interviews and writes about. That makes such a great difference.

Regardless of skating skills, quality of programs, and technical content, I was just glad to see several passionate performances and clean performances. Vasiljev, Sao Him Fa, Malinin, Britschgi, Carillo, and Kagiyama were all amazing to watch. Repond, Levito, and Sakamoto were feeling themselves. The quality of dance was excellent, and though the skill isn't as obviously high as PapaCiz or Virtue and Moir, the top six were a pleasure to watch. The last two worlds had such a cloud over them and everyone seemed to hate what they were doing, it's a joy to see skaters PER- FORM-ING again.

I remember how disappointed I was last year when I was bragging about them to everyone, especially their White Crow program, and then I heard you talk about them and about something he does with his leg, etc. Earlier this year, you even mentioned that the style of the FD was all wrong for them. But I always loved them. so I'm glad you have come around.

Great interview. I think Maya's mastery with English is better than 99% of Americans. Very intelligent and always appreciate her nuanced point of view, even though I don't totally agree with everything she feels (but I am 98% in agreement or non-disagreement with her views).
As for Amber, I thought she was working with a sports psychologist? I think it's all entirely mental. It's like she goes into flight mode for seemingly no good reason other than demons and voices that self sabotage. Entirely different skater, but Carolina Kostner was able to turn around her competition outcomes and presumably her competitive approach. Hopefully she can build a future emulating Carolina.

Bottom line, like it or not, if Ilia lands all his jumps, Yuma and Shoma will always be chasing 2nd. Ilia's components, while not as polished (yet) as Yuma or Shoma's, are acceptable enough to give him the win every single time. Even without the quad axel, Ilia still would have won.

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 5 месяцев назад +5

Yes, like Nathan Chen who only lost two competitions in the last five years of his career and having only one loss in the last four years with three undefeated seasons, Ilia will also be unbeatable. Even with a missed jump, Ilia's base value will be so high none of the others will be able to win (like Nathan's 2021 Worlds, missed the 4lutz in the SP and still won by 32 points). Ilia will have to make several major mistakes for anyone else to get close to winning. As long as he remains consistent with the jumps, he's going to dominate his era just like Nathan did. Ilia won this Worlds by 24 points. He could have missed a quad or even left one out all together for a 5-quad LP and still won by 12 points. Actually, his GOE on some of the jumps should have been even higher like his quad Salchow (just +2.91) which means he should have had an even larger margin of victory.

Sorry Dave I am on team Adam he stole my heart at the 2022 Olympics. I alyways watch the full competetion I was glad I caught Adam's program. The men have been prority for me. I was dissapointed with dance event, I always look foward to that but it was boring this season.
My top moments were Deniss Vasiljevs Both programs were awasome to watch.
Lukas Britschgi both programs were great
Yuma Was so happy to see both programs. I was sad abouth the fall but the skate was was built so well to music. I did not like his skating before Caralonia refinined his edges and components.
Of coures th winner of my biggest moment was Adam's incredible skate at the begining of the competetion. A lot of my other podcasters missed it live because it was so early. He just put it all out there and did a back flip to cap off his season. He even got reactionout of Benoirt. Then he waited in his first place chair for almost three hours, seeing the two spots move like it normally does. then Shoma skates. Once Shoma's scores come back Adam had to put his costume back on. I do not think it fully hit until he went back that he was getting a medal. Then at the cermoney, I am sure there were fan there who saw his program at the very beginning of the day. The crowd was absoulty nuts when he came to accept his medal. it was a great competetion I am glad the men didn't disappoint.

Ok so my random thought on this season's ice dance:
    1) Imo, the biggest winners this season were Lajoie/Lagha as they've clearly positioned themselves right behind the British, displacing fb/s (deservedly so, they had my favourite fd of this season)
    2) Everyone seems quite over Chock and Bates as world champions, including Chock and Bates themselves
    3) I would not underestimate Barbara Fusar Poli for next 2 seasons, she's building her own collection of ice dance teams from across Europe to counter IAM.
    4) This years 80's rd was a bigger debacle (for me) than the Olympic year's street dance.
    5) I'm still somewhat grieving over the Kaganposkaia/Angelopol split, RIP to that potential (so interesting how it's playing out given Krylova's own split with Angelopol's Uncle and how that played out).
Also I saw recently that Liza Shanaeva also split with her partner, I'm sure somewhere out there Annabelle Morozov is cackling in vindication lol

@@Bambi469 Totally get your diagreement on 2, that was just my read on the overall vibe, my interpretation is very much subjective. totally agree on the Chock and Bates. They did not deserve to win this year and they won via help from the judges IMO. I'm hoping they decide to retire. It's time. They have nothing new to bring to the sport. Also the ISU needs to drop the dance party thing and figure out something else.

I find it interesting that you started that Worlds review video with Jonathan rightly criticizing the commentators who coddle skaters in their commentary and lack real constructive criticism in favor of "toxic positivity" that doesn't benefit the skaters or viewers. That was perfectly said as it's a real problem in skating coverage. Even so, it seems a bit ironic that you've now moved the video to pay-only for fear of criticism from viewers commenting on it. But her lynchpin position of doping, abuse, allowing horrible choreography by Gleikhengauz, probable wheeling and dealing with judges, and probable money laundering just completely negates any fair competition in figure skating. I will give her credit for not jumping on the Putin bandwagon with the invasion of Ukraine though.

thanks for the upload. i can sense your frustration and hope you won't become so disillusioned you leave the sport entirely because hearing your opinion week after week over the years has made the sport significantly more enjoyable for me. I honestly just wish for more honest judging and sensible federations (that protect their skaters and don't burn out their skaters like korea or have politics that send their skaters to colorado like USA). My stand outs this year were Yuna Aoki and rino matsuike. They're both very musical. They remind me of Tomono. I also feel like Repond and Petrokina have a lot of potential. In general, I like the men, just wish skating skills was treated as its own thing separate from artistry. It's technical and should be treated as such. I think pairs needs a serious rehaul in choreography because it feels the most repetitive and boring. Feels like they could just take out a sbs jump. We can just see that in singles but better. I honestly feel the worse about ice dance. The judging makes no sense and it feels like the committee doesn't care about what the fans think or want at all. I get angry just watching it. Feels like the whole thing could have been an email and we can just check back in a few years.

@@Patricia599 Sorry, but there were several things in that discussion that were just plainly inaccurate. I'm not saying Dave should fake being positive and happy about it, obviously he is free to feel however he feels.
But the several inaccurate/sour comments included the following (to be clear I'm paraphrasing): "Chaeyeon's jumps are cheated" when her jumps were the cleanest and most textbook out of all women competing at worlds, "Yuzuru Hanyu never complimented his fellow competitors" which is plainly untrue, "Kaori is putting on a goofy/carefree persona and isn't taking this seriously" which assigns all kinds of insincere motivations to a widely beloved champion and a wholesome human being.
Statements like these were bound to get Dave and Jonathan a lot of heat from basically every corner of the online fs community (including rabid twitter fanyus) and I think he realized that himself and felt safer just making it exclusive to patreon supporters. That was his choice and in my personal and irrelevant opinion it was a good choice.
