Mike Love turned The Beach Boys into a living juke-box. John Stamos is one of two drummers on stage, which is why you can hear a fill when he stands up. Bruce Johnston is the other Beach Boy in Mike's band, although David Marks sometimes appears, too.
Totally agree with you their as well. Mike love turned beachboys into a juke-box band. If Mike love let Brian Wilson do his job during the late 60's, they could have been a lot bigger than beatles, Rolling stones and The Doors.
look again i didn't see anyone playing the other drum set i first thought that too but anyway mike is so jealous of brian he cant do anything but spout off his stupid mouth
@johndoyle he would never let that happen, he wouldn’t be able to bear watching Brian get all the credit. It’s never been The Beach Boys to Mike Love, it’s only been the Mike Love band
It's Bruce Johnston and he has been with The Beach Boys, uninterrupted, since 1965. I think it's fair to call him a real Beach Boy after all this time. However, the fact he continues to align himself with Mike says all you need to know about him.
There was actually an interruption in Bruce’s tenure with the band when he left over “creative differences” around 1971. (That’s when Carl Wilson asked Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin to join the band for the “Carl And The Passions: ‘So Tough,’” “Holland” and “In Concert” albums.) I don’t remember exactly when he rejoined, but I believe it was in the late ‘70’s. So he was gone for a good-sized chunk of time.
Bruce is a proper member of the band, but he is not very talented. Neither is Mike. The Wilson brothers and Al Jardine were the real talent behind the Beach Boys.
Apparently, David Crosby can't stand Mike Love either, if you look at some of his recent statements on his Rolling Stone blog. Yea, this really isn't the Beach Boys. I've read that Mike Love has, in essence, turned his touring band into a Beach Boys tribute band. I've seen/heard tribute bands which were better than this. (Sorry, I will admit I can't recall their names at the moment). But they seemed like they were seriously paying tribute to the group they were honoring. This looks just like some circus that's being performed, because one of the members can lay claim to having been in the original group. Mike's voice was an integral part of the original Beach Boys sound. These guys are not the Beach Boys. Yes, a good dose of "Pet Sounds" should be good for one's being, after seeing this. Brian gave us "Pet Sounds." Mike Love gave us "Looking Back With Love."
David Crosby. Yikes! From what I heard takes one to know one. He is not most liked guy in rock 'n roll either. The way I look at it is the world's big enough place to let bygones be bygones, and reward those who dig a Little deeper, even if it's disappointing for those who don't and don't know the history. Those who really dig in will learn of Brian's version of Beach Boys with Al, Blondie, and Wondermints band and enjoy them.
Despite having a history intertwined with Brian Wilson’s abusive father Murray, his abusive psychologist Dr. Landy and even Charles fucking Manson, Mike Love and the unrivaled irony of his last name stand as the villain of The Beach Boys, the stifling impediment of Brian Wilson’s creative genius, and the absolute enemy of true art and good taste!
The Beach Boys have a built in audiance similar to other bands who don't have, or hardly have any original members left. It's not hard to duplicate Mike Loves singing, practically anybody could do it with a clothespin on their nose! So replacing him will not be a chore. Journey has been living off their Steve Perry years for decades now. I liked Journey back in the day. It is kimd of puzzling if you look at their albums, they are absolutly chock full of songwriting credits, but one guy leaves and suddenly not a sniff of a hit record? They can somewhat duplicate the singing, but aparently lost the ability to write music????
This show was embarrassing for the Beach boys whom I have been a fan for about 50 years!!! When I see John Stamos and the rest making a mockery of this band ,it really pissed me off!!! I dont like Mike Love , never had never will!! FLAKE
And remember if it wasn't for Mike love the beach boys would've died in 1970 He's done thousands and thousands of shows and works is ass off every day promoting the band for the last 50 years so you gotta give him credit for that people
Stamos is still doing his thing EHhhh, this is like lip syncing for people who didn’t rehearse. Beach boys and Reagan 80s was one thing but this is just Mike love and a pop up crew of mark macgrath and honestly Bruce Johnston is the coolest guy there by not doing anything.
That was more scary than watching The Exorcist, Shining the Omen and It in the middle of the night all by yourself in a Taliban ruled nieghborhood in Kabul with someone knocking at your door combined...that other guy pointing at Mike Love, crediting him with some kind of star status was the worst point for me. Gives the word 'Cringe' a new meaning...I'm glad I watched it with someone. Otherwise I would never be myself again.
Word is divided in two different kind of people: the Ones knowing this is a bad tribute scam band Mike Love (short pf breathe completely) carry on around the worldraising little more money…while Brian Wilson under his own name delivers the Boys true spirit.. and those who think this is The Beach Boys .. basically good and evil
That was Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray and John Stamos on drums. Sugar Ray hasn't had a hit in over 2 decades, but believe it or not, there was a period in the late 90s where they were HUGE.
@Coogan it’s from a viral clip years ago, mark mcgrath tried scrapping some teenager outside a club for calling them sugar gay. It’s so funny because mark starts acting gay
I want to be fair. All the Beach Boys have talent, and have all had cringe moments. The Beach Boys were a progressive band until 1974 when a greatest hits (all early 60s surf, cars and fun. In the mid 70s, the Beach Boys would be playing a 7 minute version of Feel Flows, while the audience would be yelling for I Get Around. This started a rift in the band when recording new material. Dennis and Carl (drugs and parties) wanted to keep moving forward musically. Mike and Al (antidrugs and meditation) believed in giving the audience what they wanted. The innocence of yesterday. Brian was stuck in the middle. As he had security gaurds trying to keep drugs away from him, but sometimes Dennis and Carl were able to give Brian drugs. This effected them on stage as the Wilsons often would fall over and sing flat on stage. This lead to a stand off in 1978 that nearly broke up the band. When Carl cleaned up his act, he helped Mike and Al create a cleaner image. Brian and Dennis were both fired from the Beach Boys unless they could get help. The 80s and 90s was a mostly nostalgic act. Carl Wilson at least made sure they sounded good on stage. When Carl past away, the voting members of the Beach Boys gave Mike Love the right to tour under the group name.. the one vote against it was Al, who got sued by Mike for trying to tour using the Beach Boy name. Then Brian started his solo career in the late 90s and would perform more deep cuts on stage. Including the entire Pet Sounds and Smile albums.
Magic Transistor Radio You've gone into greater detail about what happened in the Beach Boys, which I briefly brought up in my comment above. Thank you!
Thank you for the nutshell history and helping out it a little more in perspective. I'll somewhat ashamedly admit that the auto-Tune version of Do it Again is catchy, but best left to the original recording, vs. lip-syncing or pseudo-lip-snycing it live. The co-vocalist is Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, mid-90's punk/pop fame.
@@ErikTJ86 I don't always mind auto tune myself. At their age, they probably need it more. Especially live. But I didn't care for the remake of Do It Again. In fact, most remakes of old hits aren't that good. One exception though is Al Jardine's remake of California Saga on his Postcard album.
Hi my name is Kathy Edgar. The guy that’s playing on the drums used to play on the show called full House. I remember that’s where I seen him from. Not sure about the other guy. But anyway I just thought you should now have a great day stay safe
It's abominable that Mike Love (minus Brian Wilson and Al Jardine) has the legal right to use The Beach Boys name and go on tour with a bunch of losers, and bill it as The Beach Boys. It should actually be billed as "That asshole from The Beach Boys with a bunch of other guys you've never heard of".
Thanks for putting the effort forth to take this performance and at LEAST make us laugh... When I first saw this, the only way I can describe it was 'uncomfortable'.
I wasn't aware that Mike Love was hated so much. The ball cap with his own name......🤣That "bloke" is Mark McGrath from some late '90s band. I forgot the name. Drummer??? John Stamos is very simply famous for being famous. Dave Marks was briefly an original member before Al Jardine stepped in. Bruce Johnston toured in place of Brian Wilson, when Brian couldn't cope with the rigors of the road.
I had the privilege of seeing the Beach Boys live in Bournemouth in the UK in 1991. Other than Dennis it was the original line up. Brian even came on and did the couple of numbers. They were magnificent. Well, magnificent if you excuse Mike Love. Whatever he does just makes me cringe, and he looks like the creepy uncle you'd never leave your kids with.
The band calling itself The Beach Boys these days is comprised of Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and a bunch of other folks who aren't Beach Boys. This is definitely a 4th of July concert, which explains the excessively tacky interpretations of the national colors (red, white, and blue). The big crowd is there partly because the concert is free. Chances are most of the crowd doesn't realize that there are no Wilson brothers up there, nor is Al Jardine up there. The band hasn't been the same since Carl Wilson died. The closest they've had to a real "Beach Boys" band was the 2012 reunion tour. Chances are the guy in the crew cut is doing the real singing and Love is just mouthing along. Someone else said the guy in the crew cut is the lead singer from the one-hit wonder band Sugar Ray. He's not very famous. The guy on the drums is John Stamos, who IS an American celebrity. He starred in the show "Full House" and its reboot, "Fuller House." Stamos, from all reports, is a good guy.
Unfortunately, this is the Beach Boys today. Just Mike and Bruce, with a bunch of back up musicians. Mike took the others (Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Carl Wilson's sons) to court to gain the rights to the Beach Boys name. Weirdly, as part of the settlement, Brian, Al and Carl's sons all receive a percentage of the proceeds from any concert Mike and company perform. When Dennis died, his wife and children wound up selling his share of the Beach Boys corporation back to the corporation, to cover the debts he had left.
@@magictransistorradio4933 Several years ago, I emailed the author of the Dennis Wilson bio ("The Real Beach Boy") to ask him why just Mike and Bruce were able to use the Beach Boys name, without having Brian and Al on stage. In his answer back to me, he said that Mike had taken the others to court, to gain the sole rights to the Beach Boys name. That's what I remember him emailing. Maybe I'm wrong about that, though, because he also said in his email reply that if Brian or Al wanted, they could stop Mike from using the band name, but that they are making money from Mike performing, even though they aren't there in person with him.
@@robertzastrow4648 Great book! And John Stebbins has written some other great books as well. But that's interesting, because I recalled reading that there was a vote. If there was, I think Mike was the safest bet on a financial level to carry the name. No one expected Brian to tour as much as he has. Perhaps Al would have done a good job, but if they weren't going to work together, Mike would be the guy since he sang most of the hits. I recall reading about the falling out between Mike and Al. But I don't recall details.
@@magictransistorradio4933 I think the falling out between Mike and Al happened in the late 1990s. Carl's death played into this, with how the two reacted to that. Mike I think wanted the Beach Boys as a band to continue, and Al I think thought that the band couldn't continue without Carl. When Al formed his own group, he initially wanted to call it Beach Boys Family & Friends (he, with his sons and Brian's daughters, plus Billy Hinsche and some other Beach Boys back up musicians). Mike, having acquired the rights to the Beach Boys name, sued Al, who then changed his band name to Al Jardine, Family & Friends. I personally don't think Mike should use the Beach Boys name, because I think it's misleading. I have no problem with him wanting to continue performing, but I think he should use his own name, or use a name like "Endless Summer Beach Band" or something like that.
The guy singing with Mike is Mark McGrath from the band Sugar Ray. They had some pop hits in the 90’s and early 00’s. The drummer is John Stamos. An actor who is famous for playing Uncle Jesse on the 80’s sitcom Full House. He is sorta a member of Mike Love’s version of “The Beach Boys”. He is actually an ok guy in my opinion despite his looks. As for the guy in the crowd with the outfit you loved so much. That is pretty tacky and is technically against our flag code as you shouldn’t wear anything representing the flag as clothing. Wearing red white and blue is acceptable, but making it look like you cut up the flag and fashioned it into an outfit is not. However no one enforces it, and these people who claim to be true “patriots” probably think that dude is totally awesome. As for them playing for Trump however, that is not the case totally. First off they’re not at the White House, but on the National Mall near the Capital. What they’re doing too is a tradition that goes back to the late 70’s as The Beach Boys played on the Mall on the 4th every year. That was until some jerk of a politician decided he didn’t like their politics and deemed them as deviants and warping the youths minds and had them booted out. They fought it and Regan let them back and ever since I can remember they’ve played there in some form since on the Fourth. The documentary The Beach Boys: An American Band wraps up by talking about this.
I think you're referring to the widely and wildly discredited ABC docudrama "The Beach Boys: An American Family" It was either Ronald or Nancy Regean who dubbed them "America's Band"
Independence Day in America isn't about celebrating the current president of the United States whomever he or she may be. It's about kicking your asses in 1776 and creating a better country.
I have seen the original Beach boys numerous times. I have also seen the mike love beach boys with stamos, bruce, and marks many times too. Every time I have seen the Love version, they were unbelievably great. Phenomenal shows every time. And I hate Mike Love as a human being. This show was an anomaly.
This guy doesn’t even know who Bruce Johnston is! How is he reviewing the Beach boys like he has a valid opinion? I agree Mike is cringe… But I almost fell over laughing when he didn’t know who John Stamos was. “Whoever this is on drums” LMAO
2:17 The occupant of the White House is irrelevant to our celebration of Independence Day. Those of us who can rise above politics are just as patriotic whether the president is Obama, Trump, or Biden.
To be honest, and I'm sure I'll take heat for this, but Brian Wilson's performances aren't much better these days. I saw him with Al Jardine not too long ago and he was unbelievably spaced out. At one point he didn't even sing when he was supposed to and the middle of "Wouldn't it Be Nice" was practically an instrumental. Al recognized this and made a comment after the song, "I hope you come back to us, Brian." Not to mention Brian used a walker to get on stage. I love the Beach Boys, but their usefulness on stage is well past all of them.
Brian needed a prompter there by his piano when I saw him and his group years. He was in bad health, but you could see and hear the strain. He was brave and determined. He got great applause for the effort.
That guy with the weird haircut is Mark McGrath (lead singer for Sugar Ray) and the other guy with the black hair is John Stamos ( Uncle Jesse from full house). And this is pre recorded in a studio. However, presently, Mike sings in live concerts.
The drummer is John Stamos…they had The Beach Boys on the show “Full House” in the 90’s a few times. But I’m glad you are just calling him the guy with the v-neck…
Mike is the kind of guy who wakes up his family to tell them he’s going to sleep.
Brian Wilson has a band with Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. That's more "Beach Boys" than Mike's cover band

I wish they'd kicked him out of the band in the early 70's.

Stamos is no beach boy there on the stage, but a hot dog show off.
Look again. There’s no one playing that 2nd drum kit.
@johndoyle he would never let that happen, he wouldn’t be able to bear watching Brian get all the credit. It’s never been The Beach Boys to Mike Love, it’s only been the Mike Love band
Fuck me. It's going to be a long time before I can hear that song again.
The dude you didn't know is the lead singer of Sugar Ray
Sugar Ray is Dope
Dude is amazing..... so what is he doing lip syncing with Mike love 🤢😭
Aye, I've heard Van Dyke Parks absolutely hates him too...
Thanks for your comment!
I've seen a French tribute band called Les Garcons Du Plage whom I'd rate higher than the line-up currently touring as the Beach Boys.
Anyone could have sung the Mike Love parts.
@@ErikTJ86 At least David Crosby has written some great songs and continues to do so. Mike Love is just a talentless hack.
by no stretch of the imagination can any of the stand in the shadow of the original beach boys this is a slurr on Brian Wilsons legacy
That's the bloke singer from the band, Sugar Ray. The drummer is the guy from Full House.
The drummer was actor John Stamos, who hosted the show. The other singer was Mark McGrath from the band “Sugar Ray”.
Never watched the show. Never liked Stamos on stage with the cover band either....
The botox guy is Mark McGrath, front man for Sugar Ray.
More like an Unlikable hack
@@psyche5893 Don't disagree.
Fucking hate Mike Love! Brian Wilson hates him too and he’s the heart and soul of The Beach Boys. The true genius behind Pet Sounds and Smile
That’s not Autotune. It’s been overproduced and they’re miming. Is that John Stamos on drums?
This show was embarrassing for the Beach boys whom I have been a fan for about 50 years!!! When I see John Stamos and the rest making a mockery of this band ,it really pissed me off!!! I dont like Mike Love , never had never will!! FLAKE
Mike Love is a first cousin of the Wilson brothers. Mike’s mom was the sister of the Wilsons’ dad.
And remember if it wasn't for Mike love the beach boys would've died in 1970
He's done thousands and thousands of shows and works is ass off every day promoting the band for the last 50 years so you gotta give him credit for that people
Replace Mike with Carl and you have half of that comment right.
Appreciate your points well made! Thanks for posting!
The drummer is John Stamos. He is a legit drummer. He was in a tv show
That was more scary than watching The Exorcist, Shining the Omen and It in the middle of the night all by yourself in a Taliban ruled nieghborhood in Kabul with someone knocking at your door combined...that other guy pointing at Mike Love, crediting him with some kind of star status was the worst point for me. Gives the word 'Cringe' a new meaning...I'm glad I watched it with someone. Otherwise I would never be myself again.
For the Love of Mike! People Love to Hate him. I like Mike, but I love Beach Boys.
We don’t him specifically, we like The Beach Boys
Word is divided in two different kind of people: the Ones knowing this is a bad tribute scam band Mike Love (short pf breathe completely) carry on around the worldraising little more money…while Brian Wilson under his own name delivers the Boys true spirit.. and those who think this is The Beach Boys .. basically good and evil
That was Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray and John Stamos on drums. Sugar Ray hasn't had a hit in over 2 decades, but believe it or not, there was a period in the late 90s where they were HUGE.
Lol sugar gay
@Coogan it’s from a viral clip years ago, mark mcgrath tried scrapping some teenager outside a club for calling them sugar gay. It’s so funny because mark starts acting gay
Sugar Ray's career went from Dude Bro Hard Rock to Dude Bro Pop Rock to Dude, who are those bros?
Without Dennis... No Beach Boys even BEFORE the passing of Carl! And Mike love STILL sucks!!
Thank you!
My man al, good guy
Bruce Johnson on keyboards was made a Beach Boy around '66. He left the band a couple of times but came back to be Stimpy to Mike's Ren....
I was at the 2018 'Capitol fourth' for a marching band trip. I was so far away from the stage that I don't know if it was quite this bad though lol
So the two guys you don't know are Mark Mcgrath and John stomos.
I'm sure he has that weirdo that sings & acts even worse than him next to him to desperately try to make himself look better.
Thanks for putting the effort forth to take this performance and at LEAST make us laugh... When I first saw this, the only way I can describe it was 'uncomfortable'.
Why is “Mike Loves himself” even allowed to soil the Beach Boys name like that
I wasn't aware that Mike Love was hated so much.
Jardine was there first, then left, then came back.
Mark McGrath was the leader singer for the easily forgettable band Sugar Ray.
Actually- Glen Campbell replaced Brian and Bruce replaced Glen
That bloke at 0:34 is Mark McGrath from Sugar gay uhh Sugar Ray.
“DON’T FUCKIN CALL ME SUGAR GAY!!!!”
@@RandomNonsense1985 ''Sugar Gay''
If it wasn't for Brian Wilson, Mike Love would still be pumping gas.
The audio is faint, but I think they're lip synching to the Beach Boys "Do It Again."
The goofy guys is Mark McGrath Sugar Ray if I'm not mistaken. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Mark McGrath and John Stamos. Duh!! Terrible, they shouldn't have been there.
Did Mike actually take them to court, or did they just have a vote?
@@robertzastrow4648 Yes, I recall the lawsuits against Al. I want to say that Al was almost fired in the early 90s. But Carl stood up for him.
I think you're referring to the widely and wildly discredited ABC docudrama "The Beach Boys: An American Family"
It was either Ronald or Nancy Regean who dubbed them "America's Band"
If you come across a CD called "Summer in Paradise", put it down and walk away. Convince yourself you never saw it.
The other bloke is Mark McGrath of the band Sugar Ray and Shark a do movies and the guitars aren't plugged in
Independence Day in America isn't about celebrating the current president of the United States whomever he or she may be. It's about kicking your asses in 1776 and creating a better country.
lol
He's mark McGrath and in the late 90s and early 2000s he was the lead singer of a band called sugar ray
Yet there are plenty of examples of terrible Mike Love performances on youtube. Are they hiding the good ones?
I watched for about 2 minutes. Crappiest junk you will ever see.
Mark McGrath
You should react to the Beach boys national memorial day concert 2016
The unknown singer accompanying Mike Love is Mark McGrath formerly of the band Sugar Ray which actually put out some pretty decent tunes in the 90s
This guy doesn’t even know who Bruce Johnston is! How is he reviewing the Beach boys like he has a valid opinion? I agree Mike is cringe… But I almost fell over laughing when he didn’t know who John Stamos was. “Whoever this is on drums” LMAO
They’re playing to a track but the mics are live. Mark McGrath at least does some ad lib “wooos” that aren’t on the recorded track.
0:32 thats Mark Mcgrath from Sugaray
So the guy from Full House is the drummer for the Beach Boys?
Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys after Brian Wilson’s panic attack. He was around for a lot of the Pet Sounds / Smile Sessions.
2:17 The occupant of the White House is irrelevant to our celebration of Independence Day. Those of us who can rise above politics are just as patriotic whether the president is Obama, Trump, or Biden.
How do you not how more subs; doing God’s work like this and all?
To be honest, and I'm sure I'll take heat for this, but Brian Wilson's performances aren't much better these days. I saw him with Al Jardine not too long ago and he was unbelievably spaced out. At one point he didn't even sing when he was supposed to and the middle of "Wouldn't it Be Nice" was practically an instrumental. Al recognized this and made a comment after the song, "I hope you come back to us, Brian." Not to mention Brian used a walker to get on stage. I love the Beach Boys, but their usefulness on stage is well past all of them.
Of course. Neither love nor Wilson should be on stage at this point in their lives.
Where can I find this performance without that annoying guy in the upper right hand corner?
The flashy background singer is Mark McGrath, the lead singer from the band Sugar Ray. The extra drummer is actor John Stamos.
An embarrassment in the music business
The drummer is John Stamos…they had The Beach Boys on the show “Full House” in the 90’s a few times. But I’m glad you are just calling him the guy with the v-neck…
Mike forgot his name that's why he has that hat but he's never been able to sing anyways sad
On the drums is John Stamos, an actor who occasionally plays the role of a Beach Boy. Other than that, I have no idea what’s going on 😂
I love the negativity. Literally every damn word is negative. You must be a joy to hangout with at a party.
John Stamos on drums, the guy opening on the mic was Mark from Sugar Ray...
Oh that shirt 😮
And look forward to a review of the Feel Flows box set….that is going to be something else
@Chris Keaveny This would be great!
WOW BALD Mike Love looks great with the cap covering his bald head
