My take on the slugs. Firstly, the dots hated the rich kids so much, they wanted them to have a terrifying death. Secondly, they got rid of the bodies swiftly. Finally, I've been watching the Doctor since 1963, sometimes the only explanation needed is - it's because it's Doctor Who! Also, I feel embarrassed that I didn't see that ending coming. I wrongly assumed Lindy "othered" the Doctor because he wasn't part of her social group or class! I didn't realise I was "Colour Blind" and I apologise.
I don't think you should be apologising because as a whole, that's the correct way to be - seeing other people as simply _people_ regardless of race, gender etc. After all, the penny only dropped for the Doctor and Ruby at the same time as it did for the rest of us, and the Doctor himself was the victim. I think the episode just illustrated what a catch-22 the whole situation is. The ideal society would be an equal and harmonious one, but then harmony makes it easier for evil to slip through the cracks. Kindness is always a virtue... until kindness becomes naivety, and naivety is an enabler
@@Scrummy64 Well said. I, too, was completely color blind, and didn't pick up on the blatant racism until the end. And it's so obvious, but yeah, like OP, I missed it because I just took it as spoiled rich kids being horrible.
I didn't see it either! I'm glad it's starting a conversation in the fandom, and showing why "I don't see race" can sometimes be okay but isn't always the best approach in a society where we have to recognise the injustices in the first place to be able to root them out.
Ok is Mindhunter why everybody is so excited for Jonathan Groff? I'm enjoying every episode as well, but I won't lie I do not fully understand the Rogue hype yet, and I could not care any less about Groff. The way people talked about it made me think he was another Neil Patrick Harris level get, then I looked him up and he was in freaking Glee and Frozen. So is it all Mindhunter?
Can't wait for big finish to make a multi box set Finetime series where Dr. Pee meets Jackie Tyler, the Master, and the cast of Class, and fights in the Time War.
i feel like the point of the slugs is to show how stupid and oblivious these ppl are that they are all dying to a thing that is fairly easy to get away from if they actually cared
felt like an episode straight out of 2008 but modernised for 2024, a feeling i havent felt since WBY, i've enjoyed this series alot but this epsiode has felt the most like that vibe out of the 5 so far, even from the cold open feeling straight out the RTD era 🙂
I've been thoroughly confused the last two episodes because ... 73 Yards I cautiously enjoyed watching but hated in hindsight. Dot and Bubble I hated watching but cautiously appreciate in hindsight. So... they're actually both in the same league to me. Some really good stuff in them, both better than Space Babies, but both frustrate me for different reasons. 73 Yards was more entertaining, Dot And Bubble had more subtext. I have major reservations for both but they also both bring some really interesting conceptual stuff (parallel for when an ideal companion has to fend for themselves, parralel for when antithesis companion has to fend for themselves) Both were interesting for their experimental nature and both suffer from a lack of Doctor/Ruby foundations before we got them. Both feel half-baked to me despite some powerful gut-punches.
Ncuti and Millie absence aside, the lack of context or information in some of the episodes has been bothering me too. Not just 73 Yards, although that's an easy one to point out. I assume RTD is doing the one trick he has up his sleeve for a season arc where he puts hints in every episode. Bad Wolf, Harold Saxon, now it's Susan Twist. This time it just really feels like he is over doing it. I'm at the point where I'm banking on a reveal so significant that it fills in 15-20% every single previous episode of the season, and I don't like that anywhere near as much as spotting a Bad Wolf
At the end, I was confused about where the slugs came from, and what they were doing. With Ricky September, I felt like he was like the stand-in Doctor for this episode - especially when he was the guy holding Lindy's hand and running! but I did also get an "is this too good to be true? Should we be trusting this guy, or is he somehow involved in the bad stuff that is happening here?"
Yeah, I had the thought that, somehow, Ricky was involved. But then Liddy gets him offed and I hope she gets eaten by something really nasty in the wild.
13:50 🚨 spoiler point 🚨: Is Dot the bad guy? Maybe the Dot was trying to rid the universe of their racism, and was tired of their self centered behavior?
No matter how racist or tasteless somebody is, that alone doesn't justify murder. So, yeah, murder makes you the bad guy, even if you murdered an undesirable. Genocide of an entire planet (even if they are rich, disgusting racists) is also evil. The Doctor can be your barometer for that. He knew that these people were shitty, he still tried to save them. He has seen real evil and knows the difference between that and people being severely stupid or ignorant to the point of racism.
This is probably the episode I've enjoyed the most (so far). I liked the social commentary on social media and racism, it was perfectly balanced and nuanced. For a Doctor-lite episode it actually worked better for me than 73 yards handled it. I think it works better if you know that the doctor is there but they just can't interact in the same way (like Blink). Honestly the twist at the end was great and although I didn't initially expect it but had suspicions leading up to the twist. Ncuti was again phenomenal proving how good he is at playing the Doctor. Handled the scene brilliantly despite it being his first. Gave me Inside No. 9 vibes more than Black Mirror (Inside No. 9 is a better version of Black Mirror)
ya a 7.5 sounds like a good rating, when the season started the episodes are getting alittle better, the doctor light episodes seem to be the best breaking out of the funk that doctor who has been in, maybe hope it will find its place again.
I really think the mystery and nostalgia of dr who has been completely lost. And the same writers that i used to love are to blame. All they care about is social awareness, new age commentary. I remember watching episodes of tennant, smith, even Capaldi and feeling at the end like "wow that was powerful yet fun and whimsical." Amazing moments that defined the character and made you think "now THAT is what Dr. Who is all about." No more.
When the Doctor came to the tealisation that they were dying in alphabetical order, he says that the creature's had to have been created. Then he realises that the Dot is behind it, so the inference is that the Dot created the creatures.
Like, would Sontar be racist? They are a genderless clone species. Actually, there are a lot of “anti-diversity” villains in Doctor Who. Daleks, Cyberman, Sontarans, etc
I assumed the slugs lived in the forest they were warned about. As for the dots being able to kill their audience, yeah, that's a plot hole, though I can imagine a degree of deniability, or some other head canon can fill that in, maybe some cut scene explained.
Even though the racism read is valid about the ending of the episode my read was more classism than racism cause since it was established that since they are rich kids they were given there own bubble to live in where they could essentially do what they want with the agreement that they do an assigned task for 2 hours then they could have the other 22 hours of the day to do what they wanted and while living in there collective bubble they live in there smaller personal bubbles that makes them oblivious to the world around them so much that they it is possible that the home world could have been using them as food for the slug like creatures caused they are on constantly in there bubbles and wouldn’t notice the creatures being around eating them and the survivors not going with the doctor said that they knew better cause they are rich and are better than then him cause they perceive him t9 be poor but it’s not really explained how the regeneration seemly has money when the doctor especially in the modern era doesn’t seem to have money like having to sonic the atm to get money for Donna in the runaway bride
I would absolutely love to catch one of these live , but you streamed at 5am this morning and 4am two weeks ago. Noone is awake at that hour! So very unamerican of you lol 😛
Dr. Pee was intriguing, I'm guessing that was meant to be an AI creation, rather than an actual friend. Andother comment on how superficial their friendships were.
This episode was an ok episode. I feel like the first half was very slow and boring since it was nothing but just talking in a bubble. Once ricky joined it turned the episode around. Ricky to me symbolized people who are willing to change and lindy symbolizing people who are just to stuck in their ways. You could even tell she was conflicted a bit in the end but her stubborness and her friends made her give back into her bad behavior and lead her to death. Its a 7/10 for me.
I genuinely did not expect to see so many comments of people liking the episode. I was shocked to see a better reception to this than Space Babies 😬 I liked the ending and the micro aggressions throughout. I also liked Callie Cooke’s performance and many of the themes the episode was going for but (to me) they deserved much better execution than they got. I was just so bored throughout, that I don’t even want to watch it a second time, it already felt 3h long the first time and the visual effects, the costumes, the dialogue just felt cheap to me (like a first draft, not like a finished product) it was just not fun to watch. While it was thought provoking it just had so much wasted potential it was genuinely hard to watch. But please feel very free to disagree! I’m just genuinely baffled so many people enjoyed it so much. I am jealous of those who did, because I really wanted to and thought I would enjoy this episode.
What I don't get is why the Doctor who is an alien thinks the aliens who are killing other aliens are doing so based on the alphabetical order in English. That doesn't make much sense.
I think the episode was fine, there are a few minor things that i could normally mostly ignore, for example why the dots used the slugs if they could just kill them alone, but my main problem is that it doesn't feel like a doctor who episode to me which just sours the whole experience for me. I dont know why that is exactly or why that bothers me so much, wish i could just enjoy the episode but i don't.
