You are correct. Polyphemus was the youngest Cyclopes on the island (and because of that more or less excluded from things which is why he has his sheep friends).
I keep seeing people claim Polyphemus was the youngest, but I don't recall ever learning that as a mythology student. I decided to go research this, hitting up some of my mythology nerds, and there's actually a discussion about this idea. To summarize, absolutely nowhere in literature is Polyphemus considered to be particularly young or weak. It's a modern interpretation, likely based on an internet misunderstanding of him coming from the "younger generation" of Cyclopes. This is because the older generation were wiped extinct. The new generation were children of Poseidon, but Polyphemus is never described as being either the youngest or least respected. As far as the mythology groups I checked could tell, Polyphemus being the youngest isn't even based on modern stories. It just sort of sprang out of nowhere, an internet myth. If it is based on a modern book, please let me know and I'll pass it on. Some members of this mythology community wrote that they have also seen people online claim that Polyphemus is the strongest and most respected among the Cyclopes, totally opposite. This is because when Aeneas comes to the island and Polyphemus thinks the Greeks have returned (now that he knows who Odysseus is) he calls for help and the rest of the Cyclopes rush over to aid him. That doesn't really denote strength or respect, though. 2nd generation Cyclopes didn't need much of a reason for attacking humans. Plus that's a Roman myth, not a Greek one. Debates have raged for a few hundreds years about how much "The Aeneid" even counts. For the Greeks, Polyphemus was a loner, but all of the 2nd generation Cyclopes were. The reason he has sheep friends isn't because he was excluded, but because he liked company, and the Cyclopes had no sense of community. Keep to yourself, feed yourself, cloth yourself, die by yourself. However, if you hurt one, they will all come after you. While the 1st generation were blacksmiths and intelligent, the 2nd generation kept to themselves and were a murderous lot who rarely made friends with even their own kind. In that respect, Polyphemus was open-minded. He is actually described as being very romantic and wooed Galatea with his poetry. There's even a myth of him being in a love triangle, haha!
@@rhov-anion Yeah, its a fully modern interpretation. It's comes form the idea that Polyphemus is written as more naive and childlike when compared to other mythological beings.
I'm sure someone has said it already, but Odysseus crying isn't just a sign of his sadness towards their death, but sadness that he's damning them to no afterlife. In Greek myth, you have to be buried with coins over your eyes, cuz without them you won't be able to pay the toll for Charon, who's the entity in charge of ferrying the dead across the River Styx and into the Underworld proper. Without those coins, they cant pay the toll, and so Charon can't take them across the Styx. Glad that you caught Odysseus telling the cyclops his name is a big no. That is a moment of hubris because he is taunting the cyclops instead of leaving quietly. In ancient Greece hubris was a crime and is always followed by divine punishment
I thought hubris was specifically thinking/claiming you're on the same level as or better than _the gods,_ not just being a blowhard in general. Like, Arachne for example, didn't get in trouble because she claimed to be the best weaver in the world, she got in trouble because she said she was _better than Athena._ Psyche got in trouble because people were saying she was more beautiful than Aphrodite. Niobe got all 14 of her children smited because she bragged about being a better mother than Leto, etc. Odysseus isn't claiming to be better than any gods, he's effectively just telling the cyclops to think twice before trying to _eat people_ next time, because it didn't work out for him very well.
Polyphemus being a kid or at least a very young cyclops is a very interesting interpretation and a common headcanon in the fandom since it would explain why he’s so quick to lash out on Ody and friends instead of trying to be understanding of the situation as he’s basically throwing a very deadly temper tantrum. But in the Odyssey he’s actually a bit of a runt (so yeah that’s a weakling cyclops) and social outcast treated badly by the other cyclopses, that’s why he cares that much for the sheep as they are his most faithful companions and only friends.
The reason the eye was bigger is that Polyphemus is the Child Cylcops. And a Runt. He's the littlest one on the food chain. The sheep were his only friends because the other Cyclopi abuse him
