I think it would have been interesting to see the two methods combined. First make the walnuts look like brains with the pink candy melts, then once set, use those in the molds so they look like they're coming out of the skull. I'd also just use while chocolate for the skulls so it looks more like bone. Great technique regardless!

Those are great! I would coat the walnuts in a sugar syrup that has red coloring, let those cool. Then proceed with your second technique for a more gory brains look!

I love the second batch you made where the brains are more embedded. I think they would look good with the pink brains too 😋

Little lumps of rice cripy treats with pink marshmallows would make a good subsitution for nut free families, I assume. You could also brush the nuts with pink powdered food dye after embedding them, to get that brainy color I bet.

Hmm... maybe the pink ones would look more like brains if you get a toothpick dipped in candy melts or food coloring and trace veins on the walnut. Just an idea :)

would probably break the nut in half horizontally and put a half in each side eliminating the need to melt the other side to make it fit

Michaels used to have these molds in a different form, same shapes, but a lot more and lined up differently. I bought one, but I can't remember where i put it.

the 1st one looks like a brain but It doesn't look as connected and the 2nd one looks like the shape of a brain bit the color isn't right, I thought it looked like caramel corn in the thumbnail

You can try Wilton Candy Melts EZ Thin. Works great, and makes the chocolate of nice and soft texture without changing flavor. ;)
