  • Many Bothans died to bring you this information: how ascending sixes is actually played. If you're fussing with how to play fancy arpeggios with alternate picking and you haven't verified whether ascending sixes has the correct sequence of escapes, you're doing it wrong. This is your first mixed escape / double escape phrase. Need help with your picking technique? Get in touch: troygrady.com

      @@troygrady I used to do 3 upwards and 3 downwards. So switch the slant in the middle, but for some reason that method was just exhausting. And it was confusing seeing people who never even analyze their picking using outside. Like how did they find this more comfy before inward? But now it makes sense.

    I notice the curled index. Is this recommended by fast pickers ? I was thinking I sometimes get more accuracy with my index tip pointing straight down towards the guitar.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  2 месяца назад +2

      The index isn't really curled, nor is it completely straight. Like most body positions it's just in an arbitrary orientation related more to how the joints connect comfortably and not specifically to the guitar or room. But more to your question: pick grip is related to comfort and pick attack, but not really to speed. Picking speed is mostly about the joint that's moving and the axis along which the joint is moving (if the joint has more than one), and is enabled by your overall form (forearm position and other factors). In this case I'm using what we call "reverse dart" wrist motion - specifically the Di Meola / Andy Wood variety which is a little less fast. Here's our explainer on how this type of picking motion works ( ruclips.net/video/NWuGkXhj0T8/видео.html ). To perform it, establish the reverse dart form / positioning, and use whatever pick grip allows your fingers to hold the pick without lots of force or strain. Then do the motion fast. If it's not fast or easy, it's because the technique isn't quite right. When done correctly the motion is fast immediately, "exercises" are not needed.

    Is this different from your older videos when you called it two way pick slanting? And can you explain what mixed escape is. My understanding is it is called mixed escape because it combines a downstroke escape and a double escape thus “ mix”.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  2 месяца назад +2

      Exactly. "Two way pickslanting" is our term for when players do a form change (usually with the forearm joint) that causes the pick to appear to change its orientation. In this case, that's not happening - or not happening as much. So I wouldn't call this two-way pickslanting. However you are exactly right that there are two slightly different motions being mixed together so "mixed escape" is a good way to refer to this. Also "double escape" is appropriate since we can see that double escape motion is happening here, and good double escape players will display this mix of motions when going very fast. Note also, and this is very "inside baseball", that even when players do actual two-way pickslanting, two different wrist motions are still being used - it's not just the arm flip-flopping around. So there is still a mixing of different escapes performed by the wrist joint. But we needed a way to refer to players who *don't* do the forearm component, and mixed escape / double escape are where we landed.

    no more into the idea of pickslanting and "antigravity"? is it better to think in terms of dsx and dbx?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  2 месяца назад +3

      You can't look at the "slant" of the pick and know what the escape is - there are too many combinations. So we had to create names for the escapes as well. For example, Andy Wood is a DSX player but he does not have an upward pickslant. Nuno Bettencourt is similar. You can't call these players "upward pickslanters" because that makes no sense. But they do use DSX motion. So now we can be more accurate - we can say which pickslant (if any) the player users, AND we can also say which escape they have. The Andy / Nuno technique is actually very common, so it's good that we have a clear way to describe what these players are doing now. Before, just looking at the pickslant, it wasn't enough information.

    Is it just me or does the first upstroke on the G string sound weaker than the others? To me that first note is quite unclear.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  2 месяца назад +1

      Yep! In slow motion the pitch on that note is less apparent. But the actual pick attack on the string is clear, so it's not a picking issue. Possibly misfretting or unintentional muting. This is why filming is really valuable. If you want different results, you need to do something different than you were doing before. And from the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of Magnet clips players have sent us in the last year alone, I can tell you that most people simply have no idea what is going on in their playing because they haven't looked at it.

    • @ShredTraining
      @ShredTraining 2 месяца назад

      @@troygrady Interesting, thanks for responding.
      One possible issue I have noticed with students that angle their pick a lot, is that their upstrokes sound weaker. The tone is generally softer compared to their downstrokes.
      Do you consider this to be an issue that needs correcting?
      Thick picks and flatpicking seem to resolve the tone/velocity issue. But flatpicking has many downsides of its own.

    No disrespect but here is how u get vibrato like Michael schenker. U first listen but not to the amp. U listen to nowhere but ur still listening. This makes the vibrato way louder. Practice and record to test if ur doing it right. The separate part is u make it with ur soul. Soul vibrato. U don't control where it's going but u just do it and it does what u want it to. Like how magneto moves metal. Extra unnecessary is to keep string in back area during vibrtao.
