Back in Pokemon Black & White Version, this Legendary Dragon was ranked in OU for the first time ever and it perfectly encapsulates the Huge power level of Gen 5 with it's high stats, huge damage output and even great defensive value. While the #1 spot in Gen 5 is up for debate, Jimothy is here to make the case for Latios as the King of Gen 5.

Gen 5 was when i graduated from bullying people on the playground and hopped on the simulators and got RIGHT. To this day my favorite competitive gen it was such a slugfest constantly and the pace just felt perfect. Dragmag was also my jam at the time but I would pair it with fighting spam and often time a Cresselia (who had replaced Blissey as my favorite pokemon to throw at threats to make them shut up and leave me alone
This is a pretty good summary! Personally tho, I always think Tyranitar’s utility nowadays is much worse and only serves to set sand and check/trap psychics, only being at the top cuz that role is otherwise nearly impossible to fill. It’s common knowledge solo stealth rock Ttar is completely unviable at this point. Hippo has long since left the meta and Latios doesn’t help that.

I don’t know what iron mugulis has in the way of coverage but I do know that it outspeeds great tusk and has ungodly special attack so even normal stab would likely ohko unless you run assault vest tusk

Latios is top for sure. Its stats are well rounded and as you mentioned it can go on any team.
I think Latios is absolutely number 1. With its absurd power and the amount it can check due to stats, typing, and recover, like you said being able to fit on so many teams, as well as tyranitar also having to deal with hazards and being needed for alakazam, reuniclus, and removing rain, it’s really really difficult to prevent Latios from doing something big on a game to game basis.

As someone who started in gen 5, let me just tell you this tier has always been a nightmare. An incompetent smogon council that made little effort at balance, it took such a long time for simple things like chlorophyll and arena trap, and gems to get banned. The casual gen 5 player base keeps the tier uncompetitive, because of the opinion of unserious ladder players who like to farm points with thunderus rain we have to play such a broken tier in tournament. In my opinion the only way to balance the tier at this point would be for the council just to tell the player base that their opinion doesn’t matter and ban thunderus, latios and keldio, all 3 of these Pokémon restrict team building so much, it’s the reason why the only 3 viable teams styles are sand, rain and weather less hyper offense (witch also uses latios and keldio) I’ve played custom meta games where all 3 of these mons were banned and its a little disheartening to know that we will probably never see a metagame like this in tournaments. You saw some really cool team styles like hippowdon sand with scizor bc you don’t need t-tar to check latios and thunderus anymore. You saw sun balance with a double psychic core, victini and cresselia, etc. so many more diverse play styles and teams. And for people who are saying that things will become unbalanced because the the defensive utility those mons provide, I would disagree. Latias takes latios spot and it bulkier, keldio did serve as a minor switch in for like a stray scald or something but nothing is gonna become offensively broken without keldio, and thunderus had little to no defensive utility, maybe jirachi and defensive drill but that’s it. Latias doesn’t have the offense that latios does, the stat difference might seem minor on paper but things like hippo or jellecent or spdef drill can really feel the stat difference when they check it. Also rain is still very much viable, starmie replaces keldio as a fast offensive water type, not to mention they still have tentacruel. Sun would now be a viable play style again with these bans, now letting us have all 3 weathers again (sorry hail) without doing something stupid like unbanning chlorophyll or something. I know that these changes would strip away what many people would consider the identity of gen 5 but tbh I don’t really care, I wanna play a balanced gen 5 metagame for once, soul dew latios will be viable in Ubers, go play that. I don’t think you will agree but I hope you can see where im coming from.

The gem ban almost didn't even happen which is crazy. I do enjoy the format in its current state but yeah it really is only those 3 archetypes LOL. Wouldn't at all be opposed to Latios/Keldeo/Thundy bans
You're 100% right, and that's why I pretty much just stuck to UU back in gen 5. I found it significantly more fun because of how varied the teams were, and it was nice to not have to worry quite so much about overpowered nonsense.

Day 7: it appears that iron mugulis is shivering in fear, but that causes it to destroy as many thing it can as much as possible before it is killed. However, i still doubt that great tusk can handle it alone, due to its slower base speed stat and weak special defense. I plan to hire ursaluna to help out on the job, with its decent defenses capable of just handling a hit to deal an attack just as powerful, if not more powerful than great tusk with a attack stat of 140. Iron mugulis has reached the capital and the government has lost hope. Perhaps its time to subscribe.

This iron mugulis arc is truly one of the moments of all time.
I think the fact that Latios can easily get replaced by Latias is actually an argument for the ban. Latias have all the positive effects on the mera that latios has by keeping the same pokémon in check, arguably better, while not having the negative effects to the same extent as it has due to its lower offenses. It can still counter everything latios is supposed to counter, but it doesn't have the same potential of destroying absolutely everything and fishing for good matchups. Plus it also help to make reuniclus, keldeo and breloom, 3 other very controversial Pokemon in gen 5 much easier to counter, by either having worse synergy with them or directly countering them.
Based Latias enjoyer. Latias and Latios have the same typing, BST, ability, speed tier, nearly identical stat spreads and nearly identical movepools outside of like memento versus healing wish. Latias outspeeds and revenge kills all the same things Latios does, and she actually defensively counters or checks the offensive threats Latios does better than Latios does. All while being a much less egregious offensive threat.
Obviously there would be a few fringe interactions that would be different, like not being able to 2hko Ttar with rocks up with specs surf. But that was always a risky play regardless even with Latios.
Of course, I believe arena trap's ban warrants retesting Chlorophyll, so take it all with a grain of salt.
Everyone I have some bad news… even though jimothy cool has hit 21k, iron mugulus survived on 1hp with its focus sash 😱. The good news is famous poketuber BKC has agreed to make a 10 hour persuasive, unedited video essay on iron mugulus if Jim hits 22k subs. He said it will include many unedited bathroom breaks for extra persuasion to make sure that iron mugulus is banned from gen 12 RU. Please everyone, iron mugulus has terrorized us for so long, please let us end this madness!!

when i was climbing gen v ou ladder i've faced every latios build ever.
i used a dragmag team, but latios was so fucking scary.
is it choice scarf and can outrun anything alive? is it choice specs and will punish me for making a defensive play? is it tail wind and generate advantage for the whole team? is it life orb and can even punish magnezone with a orb boosted earthquake?
it was honestly frightning stand in the front of this abomination and i loved each second of it.
imo keldeo is 2x as broken as latios. rain teams are supreme and latios is just a general threat that can become twice as dangerous with some creativity.

Also, 6:05 Latias being able to check almost all the same things Latios does while simply being generally less powerful is a great argument in favour of a Latios ban, since it means the format isn't dependent on Latios the same way say GSC is dependent on Snorlax despite how powerful they are.

I've played it a lot over the years and honestly I don't really like it. Which is a shame cause I used to really enjoy it back in the day
I dislike Jirachi as a #1 mon, and the High power level + lack of team preview makes it hard to form gameplans and really grasp teambuilding. Locked in leads + the introduction of Stealth Rock also makes lead matchups feel really random to me. Hazard Control doesn't really feel like a thing either, you just have to accept that both players will make Rocks in most games
Honestly that is a really fair take, however the randomness can also be really fun when in lower ladder, sometimes the matches can end with such funny endings that I can’t even be mad, it’s like RBY, it’s so goofy, that I can’t help but love it,

I've also come to dislike the modern DPP metagame, but I remember playing it back before Platinum and HGSS move tutors were introduced and absolutely loving it.
Salamence didn't get Outrage yet, and was still a fearsome, yet balanced sweeper, rarely mentioned in the same sentence as "ban". Gyarados was played in 3 different very distinct manners, depending upon drastically different levels of bulk, and its RestTalk set with Waterfall and Ice Fang was one of the few reliable Garchomp counters before the chomp ban. No one was using Choice Scarf Tyranitar back then, and Starmie often prioritized running Ice Beam over Thunderbolt, because it wasn't in vogue yet to drop either Rapid Spin or Recover, so the EV use on DD sets could afford running slow Gyara sets. Most of the really scary sweepers at the time weren't being held back specifically by pokemon vulnerable to Dugtrio, so Dugtrio actually felt like a pretty healthy part of the metagame at the time, and no one was talking about potentially banning it.
Stealth Rocks did feel extremely oppressive, even back then. However, spinning was way more viable in the early metagame. Forretress was very reliable on stall teams, and was usually paired with a Wish-passer, and bulky offense teams would frequently pair said Wish-passer with Donphan instead. Also, Starmie was less frightened of Pursuit back then, and tended to be more bold in spinning away rocks. Life Orb sets with Recover/Rapid Spin/Hydro Pump/Ice Beam were common and effective in the early meta. People also hadn't figured out that Claydol sucked yet, so they were still using it anyway to spin, even if it got mixed results.
I look on DPP's current metagame now, and it's just never struck me as especially fun. It's not one of the older metagames which has aged well to me, such as Advance.
Also, before the gameplay really became optimized later in the generation, Electivire really was not as bad as people like to say it was nowadays. GyaraVire is a huge meme team comp now and is widely regarded as awful, but it did not start awful.

I think what he meant is that with 350 you can outspeed popular threats like Keldeo, while if you look at Gen 8, Dragapult and Zeraora are just waiting to knock you out. But you would be right, 350 is good. In Gen 5, only alakazam, starmie and Gengar outspeed you. The first 2 being relatively harmless to Latios and the latter being a speedtie.

Disagree. If you banned Latios, Latias slips into its defensive roles and checks all of the offensive threats the format counts on Latios to do better than Latios does, while being weaker offensively itself and giving teams in general more breathing room. Latias checks/counters all the same things Latios does (actually being even more successful at checking things like Keldeo/Thundurus-T etc) while being much less of a proactive threat/nuke that demands lots of answers itself.
As long as Latias exists, the format does not hinge on Latios' existence.
