Another modern movie trope (we already know it's false, but it would be a good demonstration): Archers holding their bows fully drawn, in the "ready" position, sitting there like that for ages while the enemy advances. Warbows have such high draw weights (100-200 lbs) that even trained, strong archers wouldn't be able to keep the bow drawn longer than a few seconds.
@@dashrendar5320 I think the only safe way would be blunt rubber tips and wearing full helmet and body armor to be safe. Sort of like a hardcore larp arrow
For sure, was the one who pushed to do it that way with the Shields. I said we can just splice it together, but he said can you hit the spot and I said yes and then he said OK let’s do it. So lots of trust in me hahaha
I grinned the whole way through! You have a such vibrant life lol that looks like a ton of fun! We all were imagining doing this kind of thing as little kids
There are historical sources mentioning broken spears and certainly some could be from the spearhead getting bent or chipped or someone stepping on the shaft, but I think at least some could be from people striking the spears with blades. Sometimes peasants would use woodcutting axes in battle instead of battle axes... one of those could definitely cut a spear in one strike, if the spearman had a very tight grip. And adrenaline makes people anxiously grip their weapons way harder than they should. Someone white-knuckling his spear could've had the spear cut in half in combat for sure.
Indeed, there are numerous accounts of it happening and even with a better cutting sword it could have for sure made it though. It was cool to see from a trial perspective because ash really is strong and i was surprised how well it made it through even with him dropping it
Thank you, my friend, so glad you enjoyed it. It is a ton of fun and we did carefully plan everything I know it doesn’t really show up on the video, but it was all well thought out to maximize safety. And yes, we do have a lot of trust in each other.
There are accounts of cutting the head off a spear. It seems to be done with larger swords and it also sounds like it requires several strikes to do so. I think the best evidence that it was a concern is the fact that late period pole weapons had langets.
Nice... Haven't seen content like this by two guys who don't care about modern health and safety standards since the ThegnThrand golden age. Guys like this actually demonstrate stuff that academics cannot because of their fear limit.
The arrow and shield thing, you showed a bit of Braveheart(spits on floor derisively), historical records state that the arrows when they hit the shields, passed through and killed the man behind. That is the effect of a bodkin arrow on a simple wooden shield
Correct, however, the test was not whether the arrow would go through. It’s whether you could break it, so obviously I did not use extremely sharp or tapered bodkins or tips that might penetrate all the way it was thought out in anyway that would maximize protection for the person behind the shield by using specific dulled points and arrowheads
I've been part of a shield wall getting pelted with rubber-tipped javelins. Deeply unpleasant! lol Getting rammed full speed by a guy with a daneaxe was worse though. Got knocked down so hard I slid 10 foot across the field on my back, had a bruise from hip to opposite shoulder for weeks
Haha yeah that’s rough. We did a shield ball test in the other one where it was just full tilt run into the shield and that one gave both of us sore shoulders.
"Will the spear change their direction or momentum." Yes, obviously. The difference may be negligible or even imperceptible, but I'm far too pedantic to say there's no change.
I think at the 8:40 minute mark, these guys experienced history in real life ...discovering exactly what once separated a nobleman from a commoner. Added note: You guys should consider a collab with other engineering-science channels on here. I couldn't help but think a catapult system would have served ye well for the dummy-spear-throw experiment. Keep up the good work me boys.

@@dashrendar5320 if you wanted to go full crazy you'd need to use arrows heads more suitable for penetration :) Even so I expected FFH to at least have some body armor "just in case".
I think another important thing to consider in the head cutting is that a real person will not offer that kind of resistance, some of the force will be absorbed by the neck bending and the body falling.
Dude they had swords for that purpose in medieval times it's a giant 2 hander and it's for the second line to smash the spear tips from behind the shields.look into it you will love it
Great video! A few thoughts on the spear throw propelling a jumping individual backwards: impulse is the change in the momentum of an object or individual and is equal to the integral of applied force with respect to time which, assuming constant force in time for simplicity, will be equal to the applied force multiplied by the amount of time the force is applied. To propel the jumper backwards as shown in the film, force must be applied in the direction opposite to their initial momentum and the force and/or the time of force application large enough so that the change in momentum is larger than their initial momentum. If this condition is met, the impaled individual will begin moving backwards. The time of force application when a thrown spear impacts something is small and the human body is limited on how much the spear can be accelerated, restricting impact force. As a result of this, the impulse produced by the thrown spear impacting the jumper is restricted to smaller magnitudes; hence, does not work well for deflecting someone midair. What I would imagine would a more feasible way of using a spear to stop someone jumping over your shield wall would be performing a standing thrust or bracing the spear against the ground at an angle such that the jumper would impact the spear as the time of applied force would be greater. With that being said, unless the spear is winged or something similar, the impaled individual could still run down the spear shaft to get in reach of your formation before succumbing to their wounds.
05:50 For a freshly stoned sword with the first lopping off of the battle, ok. But it's like the executions by guillotine back in the day. Those pending execution often fought to be first cuz the blade would dull after a few chops, and ain't no one got time to be executed with a dulled blade. I've always wondered what a blade's condition really looked like after a prolonged battle... At least Connor MacCloud had the self-awareness to freshly stone his Katana after every Quickening, and the metal in that blade had been folded over 200 times!😎
So the alleged accounts of doppelsoldners being the vanguard to break through Swiss pikemen formation by slicing the pike ends off could be plausible then; especially with those massive zweihandwers they carried.
Yes. There's extensive documentation of using swords to cut the heads off of pikes on the battlefield. Most of it applies to single-handed swords. There are accounts of greatswords cutting pikes, & this probably did happen, but it doesn't appear to have been the primary function of greatswords. Giacomo di Grassi gave a technique for cutting pike hafts with a partizan, & we have at least a few references to halberds/bills cutting pike hafts.
No need in testing the ballista bolts, they will just go straight through. Even if they don't, and they get stuck on a bone, there won't be enough mass or speed to change the momentum of a full grown adult. Any sharp projectile, if it's traveling fast enough to impart the force needed to move a 150lb+ human, it's going to blow through everything, bone included. Unless you could get it to hit an armor plate to stop it, you'll never move a human body with a sharp projectile or bullet of any caliber. ❤ Physics
@@dashrendar5320 because I'm a huge nerd, I ran the numbers 😅 a human travelling roughly 10 mph and weighing around 150lb would have an impact force of around 700 newtons. An average ballista bolt weighed around 26lb and could hit speeds of up to 115mph, giving it an impact force of over 120,000 newtons 😱 with modern ballistic armor, you could maybe get a dummy to fly back pretty far 😂😂😂
That’s amazing. Thank you so much for crunching those numbers haha I love the nerd data, but I’m not really smart enough to calculate it on my own so I appreciate the assist
Love the video but I can't agree with your last words about the evolution of weapons and the sword as a tournament weapon. From the 10th to 16th century the sword was the dominant mid range weapon because of its performance in stabbing and thrusts. Actually maces were more of a tournament weapon than a sword compared to their use on battlefields and duels to the death.
I agree they were certainly used. I think I said it poorly, I meant to imply that they were not the prominent weapon on the battlefield as far as volume of them in comparison to other weapons.
When swords have been battlefield weapons, it has either been thrust centric swords (e.g. the estoc), or against unarmored enemies. In the Middle Ages, the sword was mostly for personal defense and duels. On the battlefield, it was a weapon of last resort, to be drawn after all the other weapons were broken or lost, though it was also handy for cutting down poorly equipped, non-professional troops. If it hadn't been so easy to carry, bringing it along into battle would probably have been rare.
Now what will really kill a knight is a dagger. Trust me most of those knight fights devolved into wrestling matches with people shanking eachother. It was a matter of stamina and who could find a gap first
I just randomly watched some videos, on why men die younger than women and landed here. Also ... Other channels: "Don't try this at home." This channel: "Grab yourself some weapons and do it safely somewhere, with a friend. It is the best time you gonna have in your entire life."
To be fair, it was expressly, stated do not try this at multiple points in the video and in the description, haha he was more referring to just having fun outside.
@@dashrendar5320 I rewatched the video a second time, after writing that comment and noticed some written warnings, not to try that yourself. So maybe I just can't read (on the first try) ;-) Or I was too amused by the RUclips algorithm steering me here, to pay full attention to it. Anyways, great entertainment, mixed with some interesting practical science. So I might come back for some of your other videos.
SAFETY: Cutting with longsword: never ever cut towards your lead leg. For this example, step at an angle to the spear with your right foot forward and cut, which effectively moves the target near the left side of your body -- so that have now you have changed feet position: your right leg now becomes the lead leg and your left leg is safely behind you. If the sword skips off the target or you overswing, your leg will still be safe.
Ash pole strike needs to test against a Pike grip and against a mutual strike, say sword swinging into a poleaxe swing. Don't brace the shield, you want to extend the shield forward and let it pivot around the hand to absorb the incoming energy and dissipate it into rotational momentum.
How about the one where arrows instantly drop an armored target unless it’s the hero, in which case they walk around like a porcupine for the rest of the fight.
for the ash pole cut, you also gotta remember they won't just be holding it for to cut it like that, they'll be swinging it at you, so the cut would have a lot more force behind it in a real fight, making it even more realistic to cut thru. i mean, realistically, just blocking a hard swing from ash pole should be enough to cut thru 🤔
Wearing some sort of knit cap and helmet (armor in general) might make being part of the shield wall a bit more bearable to impacts. (And displacing the impact over layered shields, but that was mentioned I think.)
I feel like Matt Easton and Tod's workshop tested some of these and got different results for cutting through a spear shaft and breaking arrows stuck into a shield.
It’s very possible. Different weapons,’woods, and persons testing can all create very different results. However…I would personally trust Tod’s results more 😂😂
Cutting spear shafts is nigh impossible in battlefield conditions. They set it up to try and make the cut go through and it still didn't (barely). In battle nobody is going to position a spear for an easy cut. A very minor spear movement will negate most of the damage even if the sword guy is somehow allowed to make a full swing without being speared white doing it.

I intend to check your page out much further, peace be with you brother! Thanks for your reply.

Another modern movie trope (we already know it's false, but it would be a good demonstration):
Archers holding their bows fully drawn, in the "ready" position, sitting there like that for ages while the enemy advances. Warbows have such high draw weights (100-200 lbs) that even trained, strong archers wouldn't be able to keep the bow drawn longer than a few seconds.
Bro you guys are amazing. I’d be too scared to stand behind that shield with arrows shooting at me.
Haha, yeah art is a brave brave man
Bloody hell mate you never disappoint! One of your best yet😁👊
Thank you, my friend, it was great fun. Truly, one of my favorites as well.
Love your stuff so much I’ve been spreading your channel to everybody I know. Glad it’s going so well for you!
Would be dangerous so maybe do no tips and use armor but cutting arrows out of the air
So glad you enjoy it! The arrow cut could be cool but would need to figure out how to do it safely haha
@@dashrendar5320 I think the only safe way would be blunt rubber tips and wearing full helmet and body armor to be safe. Sort of like a hardcore larp arrow
Yeah something like that could work
@@dashrendar5320 maybe first test it against the shield to see how it does then something else softer and could give a good idea
Absolutely the coolest video yet, Bravo 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, my friend, so glad you enjoyed it. Learning a lot about making it more dynamic and fun.
DUDE! Art is a brave dude! Behind that shield! and you taking hits to the gut with armor on?!? Dangerous stuff! Another great video man!
For sure, was the one who pushed to do it that way with the Shields. I said we can just splice it together, but he said can you hit the spot and I said yes and then he said OK let’s do it. So lots of trust in me hahaha
and you just let him hit you with an axe and a sword! If you lowered your elbow just an inch, you could have lost your elbow! LOL Brave dudes!
Haha brave but more confident with each other than anything
The most loved (from my point of view) of your videos, ma dude. Incredible were, you two!!!
Thanks man, this was by far the most fun I have had making a video thus far. An absolute treat
"This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons."
You need to do this kind of Medieval Mythbusters more regularly.
I grinned the whole way through! You have a such vibrant life lol that looks like a ton of fun! We all were imagining doing this kind of thing as little kids
That’s what it feels like, just a big kid playing out those childhood dreams. It’s so fun to share and I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
It was cool to see from a trial perspective because ash really is strong and i was surprised how well it made it through even with him dropping it
Stay safe guys! Love the dedication to realism, and the trust you have in each other. Awesome video
Thank you, my friend, so glad you enjoyed it. It is a ton of fun and we did carefully plan everything I know it doesn’t really show up on the video, but it was all well thought out to maximize safety. And yes, we do have a lot of trust in each other.
Always the realest channel ever
Thanks for that my friend
This just popped up in my recommended, and I'm already hooked. Why?
Dash Rendar. Really? Does your car's license plate read "Outrider?"
Hahahaha my Siri is named Leebo…did not spring for the vanity plates
Gotta love the backyard bro science feel of this. Questionable, moderately dangerous, fun. Glad you guys made it out in one piece XD
Hahaha that right there sums up
The channel well
The two of you are so incredibly based. Like, it’s actually hard to put into words how POWERFUL your vibe is.
Man what a great video. Two of my favorite RUclipsrs collaborating what fun
So glad you enjoyed it, we had an immense amount of fun
There are accounts of cutting the head off a spear. It seems to be done with larger swords and it also sounds like it requires several strikes to do so. I think the best evidence that it was a concern is the fact that late period pole weapons had langets.
I’m so glad I found your channel.
So glad you enjoy the stuff my friend
Deeply unpleasant! lol
Getting rammed full speed by a guy with a daneaxe was worse though. Got knocked down so hard I slid 10 foot across the field on my back, had a bruise from hip to opposite shoulder for weeks
Haha yeah that’s rough. We did a shield ball test in the other one where it was just full tilt run into the shield and that one gave both of us sore shoulders.
this is insane and we need more. honestly, we need to bring back real gladiators
Haha let’s gooo!
"Will the spear change their direction or momentum."
Yes, obviously. The difference may be negligible or even imperceptible, but I'm far too pedantic to say there's no change.
Haha alright alright alright I will concede that
I think at the 8:40 minute mark, these guys experienced history in real life ...discovering exactly what once separated a nobleman from a commoner.
Added note: You guys should consider a collab with other engineering-science channels on here.
I couldn't help but think a catapult system would have served ye well for the dummy-spear-throw experiment.
Keep up the good work me boys.
Your content keeps getting better and better man. i wonder what lead sling bullets would do to a human torso or deer carcass.
Thank you so much, I am trying to improve more and more. Yes lead shot is next on the list for sure. I’m just waiting for someone to finish making me some.
this is one of the best things I've seen on RUclips
Glad you enjoyed it my friend
The ending was so cute, fooling around like children. I subbed because you rarely see anything positive on RUclips.
Anyway it’s true that women have the potential to live longer because dudes win Darwin Awards the most. Please don’t be one of them. You’re one in a million. 😊
Yes, we truly had so much fun. It was the most fun I’ve had in a while. And thank you for those kind words positivity is in short supply so anytime I can spread some fun and laughter I love to
Leting some one loose arrows at you to test that stuff is at the same time awesome and crazy.
Haha yeah we made bad decisions when we hung out together haha
@@dashrendar5320 if you wanted to go full crazy you'd need to use arrows heads more suitable for penetration :)
Even so I expected FFH to at least have some body armor "just in case".
I think another important thing to consider in the head cutting is that a real person will not offer that kind of resistance, some of the force will be absorbed by the neck bending and the body falling.
The larger specialised execution specialised blades make up for the muscle and skin
You have more trust in each other than any duo could ever dare to.
100% trust required, well skill first…but also trust 😂
This is why lawn darts were banned
Dude they had swords for that purpose in medieval times it's a giant 2 hander and it's for the second line to smash the spear tips from behind the shields.look into it you will love it
Yes the zweihander!!!! Would love to own one one day
Do NOT let Dash's wife see video footage of him getting swung at with a sharp sword! 😂
It's funny watching these two crazy viking looking guys talk about physics.
(subbed!)
Hahaha love it
Great video!
All good points spoken by an individual much more eloquent and intelligent than myself! Thank you for providing some great data and insight
that was the best vid i seen this year !!!
That is super high praise, thank you so much
As that shield becomes progressively more full of holes, it does become actually dangerous to get live arrows shot at you...
Love this kind of content

05:50 For a freshly stoned sword with the first lopping off of the battle, ok. But it's like the executions by guillotine back in the day. Those pending execution often fought to be first cuz the blade would dull after a few chops, and ain't no one got time to be executed with a dulled blade. I've always wondered what a blade's condition really looked like after a prolonged battle... At least Connor MacCloud had the self-awareness to freshly stone his Katana after every Quickening, and the metal in that blade had been folded over 200 times!😎
Yeah that’s true, gotta be in ideal conditions and well cared for
So the alleged accounts of doppelsoldners being the vanguard to break through Swiss pikemen formation by slicing the pike ends off could be plausible then; especially with those massive zweihandwers they carried.
I feel like yes, it fully could be done
This is the only definition of "boys will be boys" that I'll ever accept.
❤ Physics
Hahaha quite true, even if it had a plate to stop it. It might make you stumble backwards, but you’re not gonna fly.
Just 2 Chads doing the the things we always wanted to see.
The most fun two dudes can have 😂
Now what will really kill a knight is a dagger. Trust me most of those knight fights devolved into wrestling matches with people shanking eachother. It was a matter of stamina and who could find a gap first
A most interesting and perilous experiment. One element was missing though:
"don't try this at home"
😁
Well technically I did have it written at the beginning of the video and in the description
I just randomly watched some videos, on why men die younger than women and landed here.
Also ...
Other channels: "Don't try this at home."
This channel: "Grab yourself some weapons and do it safely somewhere, with a friend.
So maybe I just can't read (on the first try) ;-)
Or I was too amused by the RUclips algorithm steering me here, to pay full attention to it.
Anyways, great entertainment, mixed with some interesting practical science. So I might come back for some of your other videos.
Haha all good. Just wanted to make sure I made it clear I made it clear enough 😂😂

Just found your channel and love it. Will be checking out both now.
Thanks so much for that my dude. So glad you enjoy it.
Haha I kinda did that one with the hardened plate video vs warbow, Just not a person in it
Sword: A more elegant weapon for civilized society.
Mace: Damn shame about all those bones you have.
Hahaha that is a winner of a comment
You mean all those bones you don't have?
14:01 Something else I heard that kind of shield can be used for is more redirecting of force, due to the center grip
That makes sense, easier for deflection, and not as glued to the arm
for the ash pole cut, you also gotta remember they won't just be holding it for to cut it like that, they'll be swinging it at you, so the cut would have a lot more force behind it in a real fight, making it even more realistic to cut thru. i mean, realistically, just blocking a hard swing from ash pole should be enough to cut thru 🤔
just discovered this channel. Im subbing great content
Happy to have you, my friend, glad you enjoy it
Wearing some sort of knit cap and helmet (armor in general) might make being part of the shield wall a bit more bearable to impacts.
(And displacing the impact over layered shields, but that was mentioned I think.)
Interesting results. Saw Tod from Tod's workshop do the same.test with the arrows and he could not cut them. Wonder what the difference was.
Well art is crazy strong, and in peak condition. So that could be a factor
One is a warrior the outher one is a pesant
I feel like Matt Easton and Tod's workshop tested some of these and got different results for cutting through a spear shaft and breaking arrows stuck into a shield.
It’s very possible. Different weapons,’woods, and persons testing can all create very different results. However…I would personally trust Tod’s results more 😂😂
@dashrendar5320 The best thing about people "commiting science" on YT is stepping back and going "Now why the heck did they get different results?"
Now this is something special.
Amazing fun!
