Jeep Liberty Rear Disc Brakes on a Jeep XJ

- I recently did the WJ knuckle/brake conversion on the front axle on my XJ and was pleased with the results. So pleased, infact, that I decided to convert the drum brakes on the rear axle to disc using the brakes from a Jeep KJ, aka Jeep Liberty. How hard could it be?

Just a quick observation. At 15:16 the axle seal is installed backwards. Thanks for the other info though. Looking through these conversion videos to see if I want to change over my Jeep.
that explains why its leaking....im an idiot. But I do have another seal and will be rectifying that snafu forthwith.
I don’t have ability to fabricate things , so needed to keep to drop in fit. It turns out that Crown makes a disc brake upgrade kit for rear axles , and you can buy just the e-brake cables : they are drop in fit and connect perfectly to the Liberty parking brake. my friend drilled holes in the ZJ soft hose brackets and we bolted them to one of the leaf spring u bolts.
I also put in the proportioning valve of Zj into the brake proportioner. Overall this setup works really well.
I have a 93, which only had single diaphragm brake booster. I replaced it with double diaphragm from 95-96 models (also drop in fit, but make sure to use the spacer). That added strength as well.
Thank you buddy. I just crossed that bridge myself and would appreciate this info out there.
so glad you started making XJ videos again. Love the videos!
Awesome video just did the same swap! Sourced all parts from the liberty. Front wheel studs from liberty fit perfectly the e-brake cables work but they are a little long. Had to grab brake lines from the chassis down tho not just the axle. Few trips to the junk yard just to find the liberty had every part I needed for my 01 XJ with 8.25!
Great idea! I will install them on my xj on the future, those drum breaks suck
i SEE YOU ROCKING THE CLEETUS GEAR!! That means you have a turbo requirement
I can barely afford the junk I have now!
I was watching and I was like your putting them on the wrong side .....Good video and thanks I was looking for Grand Cherokee backer plates and had not thought of the Liberty . Just going for the backer plates because I'm putting all new from there out. Thanks for the video.
Bro , ur mistakes are great leassons. Thanks for sharing them!
Yeah dude that’s why it’s called a double flare cuz ya forgot the nut ? Nice video I like how easy you make it seam. Going to do mine in spring it’s down to being cold and at my age it’s hard enough to make my hands work in warm weather. Thanks I like your video.
I just stumbled on your Chanel, and I really liked this video, thank you
you're welcome!
Great video brother. I also have along standing history of getting to step 30 on a project only to look back in the parts bin to see that I forgot something on step 3.
I just rebuilt my axle with disc brake conversion and forgot the rubber boots that sandwich between the backing plates and caliper brackets. 🤦
been there done that
im looking at doing this to my 94 xj that keeps braking the rear drum brake hardware for no reason. thanks for all the info on what to look for to get it all done.
Nice job, dude! I’ve just finished gathering all the parts to do the same swap on my ‘98 XJ once the temps come down a little over here in the Sunshine State. I also got the backing plates and caliper mounts from a ‘05 Liberty at a local junkyard and then ordered the rotors, calipers, pads, e-brake shoes, brake hoses and associated hardware on Amazon. One question I have though is some of the other videos that I watched prior to me starting to gather parts for my swap showed them changing the studs on the axle tube flange that the backing plate bolted to and also having to change the wheel studs because both were too short. I didn’t see you do either one unless you did it off camera so I would assume that neither one of those changes are actually necessary? Thanks for another great video!👍
I didn't swap the wheel studs but you do lose about 1/4" of length due to the thickness of the rotor. I did get new lug nuts though.
I just watched a rear disk non zj upgrade that didn’t need a special adapter to be made.
I want bolt on damnit!
THANK YOU!!!
Love the videos man!! Keep them coming!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Solid video
I try
You also put the seals in backwards!
you aren't the first to point that out, but you are the 2nd. ruclips.net/user/shortsqVp288J8bRY
Is it needed to change the springs inside the proportioning valve just like in zj brakes?
Are you able to just grab the whole emergency cable off the liberty to use rather than having to make adapters?
not sure, probably not without mods. this seemed easier
Great video! I’m thinking of doing this to mine. Will any year liberty work as long as it’s that body style or will the new ones work as well?
Im not sure but if I remember correctly I think up to 07? but im going off memory and I smoked a lot of weed back in the 80s, so.....
THIS WILL WORK ON A 87 XJ? WITH A 10" x 1.3/4 shoes? i see yours has the 2 - 1/2
Just seeing this video and was wondering if 15” wheels would still fit after making this conversion?
may have to grind a bit. def gonna be close
WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!? I HAVE NEVER!!!! CARRIER KING PINS NEVER FALL OUT LIKE THAT!!!!!
Would love to do this swap on my 99 xj, what year Jeep Liberty should I get my parts from?
05
@@dzlfreek can you get your parts from any other year liberty?
Does this work on all XJ axles or just the Dana’s? I have a Chrysler 8.25 rear end
GBR!!!
What did you do with the proportioning valve? I may have missed it in the video, sorry.
running the factory setup. didn't change the spring, although I have it.
did you do a proportioning valve swap over as well? just wondering if that will change the braking as well?
I have the valve, but I didn't swap it out. After testing I didn't notice excessive front brake bias. Maybe I may change my mind after I go with bigger tires, but I have a friend with 35s and he didn't change his either.
You should have tried to find a locker since you were already in the rear end...
I did...unobtainium at the moment
Excellent job excellent video
Just wanted to know. Did you do an upgrade to your brake master cylinder? Or did you change your portioning valve in the master?
I haven't changed either. At my current tire size (29")I don't see a need. I only plan to go to 33" and unless I see a marked depreciation in brake performance, I probably won't then either.
Will 15in wheels still work after the conversion
You may have to clearance the calipers and it’s going to be very close. You could consider 1” wheel spacers as well. If you go that route make sure they’re hub centric
This only works for Chrysler 8.25 correct? The real question I guess is applicability to Dana 35.
I don't know if it will work on a 35. I mean, anything is possible with enough ingenuity and welding wire!
If you have the Dana 35 then just buy the complete Chrysler 8.25 rear-end from the junkyard and swap the whole thing in. Will probably be easier than just swapping brakes, and the bonus is you get rid of the weak D35.
Is the same caliper with the zj?
Thanks for the info. Appreciated!
thanks for watching
Cau you still use 15 in wheels?
you may have to clearance the calipers but 15s should work
Que tal funcionaron?
muy bueno
What year Liberty did you pull from so I can see if my local u pick has one
2005
Did he put that axle seal in backwards?
yes I did
@@dzlfreek well fiddlestix!
@@ericsennert7933 It didn't take long to figure it out...
Will this work for a 2001 tj
If equipped with a Chrysler 8.25 rear then yes
Does this work on a Dana 35 ?
I don't know
Will this work on an 89 XJ with a Dana 44?
don't know.
The liberty swap is best for the chrysler 8.25 because the liberty just used a disc/coil spring version of the 8.25. I can't say with certainty, but i do not believe this works for the dana 44.
How's the brake balance front to rear with these on the rear and the WJ brakes on the front?
Pretty equal. Enough so that I found it unnecessary to alter the proportioning valve even though I have the parts to do so.
Could do without the music
