    I was in 8th grade when this came out. Bluebeard was all over alternative radio, so I bought the whole album. I had never heard their old music, so I’d never heard anything like it. It changed my life. Absolutely fundamental to who I became as an adult. I’m a black woman. All my friends were listening to violent and sexual music. This album saved my life. ❤

      The powers that be love to use music as a tool to morally degrade the youth. Always pushing drugs, violence and promiscuity. If we didn’t have a for profit prison system, I bet there would magically be a lot less violence and drug pushing in the music.
      And FYI the CIA did try to use music to influence the youth culture in Cuba. Iirc they threw them out.

    Years after this album was released, I was in New York shopping with a friend and this song was playing....every secret I kept funneled up inside me came up to my conscience and shortly after that, my life changed dramatically. Sometimes the best decisions are the ones that are made for you. And now, years after that Saturday afternoon in November in New York, I credit this song for my awakening. Music is power.

    Post punk, gothrock, shoegaze, poprock, dreampop, purepop, blues, jazz, ballad and film score. The Cocteau`s have covered so many styles of music and still sounded unique. I am amazed they have received very little recognition for their accomplishments. But would we have it any other way? Would worldwide acclaim have put too much pressure on them to produce mainstream music? I`m glad we have what we have from the Cocteau Twins and will always be grateful for the stunning diversity and beauty of their music.

    This song has become super significant to me after losing both my mum and best friend to cancer, with my dad's battle also impending.
    After losing my mum when i was 21 and still pretty dependant, I drank a lot for about three years - masking pain of course. My best friend helped me through this, and after i lost her this year I found myself numbed. I was relieved she was no longer in horrible pain and she had changed my life for the better. But I hated that I seemed to have lost my ability to cry or even feel appropriately upset. There were things that used to remind me of my mum, like the sea, that upon sight would make me cry, and these days I can barely feel it. And same with my best friend now. I felt like i was plastic, like I wasn't being real if I was able to be so calm in such an unfair situation for my best friend who lost her life so early.
    When I heard the lyrics to this song recently I couldn't believe the personal significance, 'I can't grieve so I won't grow'. It's incredible.

I remember this feeling of slight melancholy and sadness that filled me as i heard each of their songs. But I always found my safe place in their music whenever I was hurt or sad or upset, these days I dont listen to them as much however when I do the experience is just as amazing if not even more so than the first time I heard them. Now I dont feel a sadness if anything it gives me a deep sense of peace and contentment within myself.

      I was a huge fan at the time and really looked forward to this release but I too was disappointed at first. I recognized a few gems, but it was so laid-back and slick... Now it's totally a classic, their last great work. I can never remember their song titles correctly, but that stretch on Side Two to the end is arguably the best CT trip ever. What is that, 'Essence' My Truth', 'Pur'?

    • @roccoxxxx1
      @roccoxxxx1 3 года назад +2

      @@Jhensy2012 me too, there's no way I can get the titles in my head. I think it's because they are kinda random and the lyrics are in an alien language

    I love this song, especially with the high & low-voiced Liz coming together for the 2nd chorus. Your vid is kinda like that, too, with some contrasting images of barred windows & open paths; steps to climb up (or fall dow), sky & sea (aquarium?), plus "shadows" of your self at ground level. The lyrics are pensive and self-reflective, but it's neat that you mostly show an ebullient, smiling LIz. Oh, the Rorschach patterns (album art?) & disembodied dolls fit in, too.
