Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean - Beautifully Odd or Oddly Beautiful?

- A few months back I flew to Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean - where, I hear you cry? You may have heard of Curacao and you're probably heard of Aruba, and Bonaire is the little brother of those islands deep in the Southern Caribbean close to Venezuela.
It's not as well known as its siblings as it doesn't have any golden beaches. So it lacks a lot of tourism, and so it lacks a lot of tourist infrastructure. But it is surrounded by amazing oceans and contains a lot of flamingos, salt and donkeys. A lot of donkeys...
So come with me as I share my experience of visiting Bonaire!

Your destination videos are brill. Definitely do them! How mad that that the hotel doesn't provide soap.
Thanks Imran - I'll keep doing them but in a slightly different way...
I love the way you comment on obvious shortcomings with your hilarious, dry British humour 😂 - excellent.
Thanks! A diet of Monty Python when I was younger...
Concise, helpful and engaging... thanks for posting..
Thanks Richard. Not sure it will convince many people to visit, but at least its better known as a destination now!
Bonaire is in fact, incredible for diving.
I think I mentioned that? Shore diving too which is so much easier and cheaper....
Love Bonaire, such a peaceful, friendly island 💜
Indeed - very relaxing... If you have a car!
Great video. Reminds me of a hotel I stayed in Iceland years ago where they didn’t provide bedsheets…
😂 What were they expecting you to do?
As Roger says, do what??? And bedsheets are far more bulky to pack than soap, assuming of course you know you're going to need them before you leave home!
I love these little offshoot videos - most entertaining!
p.s. A cousin has just departed Barcelona on Virgin’s Valiant Lady. I watched a couple of RUclips videos and .. crikey, it’s quite the ship.
Thanks Simon. Virgin cruises has been successful in differentiating themselves!!!
Winter beard!
Indeed! Long gone but it took a while to get round to making this video!
Take a trip to Klein Bonaire next time. The snorkelling is amazing
Thanks - I do feel a bit daft for not having taken my snorkelling stuff with me this time, but next time I'll be under the water for sure!
I had heard of Aruba but, until a friend of mine said he was going there, I didn't even know Bonaire existed. Interesting to see it, anyway 🐟
Scuba diver heaven... Beach lover - not so much!
That's why I prefer Chain Hotels like Marriott or Hilton. Have been on Curacao last year. You can make use of their BestRateGuarantee in most cases and lower the room price more than 50% sometimes. Usually (outside the US) the quality is much better than in hotels like you presented in this video. No soap is a no go ;-) Thumbs up again for your video!
Thanks Jan. There was a chain option on the island but it was 3x the price... Apart from the soap (and the weird reception people!) it was a decent place. If you have a car.....
Great video - thanks. No soap for you!!! What an odd thing to not provide.
Thanks. Odd place!
Shampoo or body gel can act as soap.
Also, when you get a small bar of soap from your previous trip, dry it off & keep it in your toilet bag, just in case. I don't assume hotels recycle soaps or small bottles of shampoo & lotions.
I tend to travel so light that I don't routinely carry body gel... And its been some years since shampoo was on the shopping list! I rely on hotels having something I can make work! Which has worked in every hotel I can remember staying in before this one!
Hi Matt-thanks for another great video-could you point me to your video where you talked about the optimum time to renew status with BAEC? My BAEC birthday is Feb!
Its in a few videos but the best time to renew is in the grace period - so for you that's Feb 9 to March 31st. You get the benefits of your expiring status (lounges, bonus avios etc) and the tier points earned go towards your new year
@@MattsPlanet typo there birthday is January 8th-so I presume best time to renew is January 9th to 28 feb! Oh and if you’re grace period is in February leap year-you get an extra day!!!
@@jamespaul9929 That works!
Not quite sure why your destination videos dont fare better. I've always found them to be quite enjoyable. We've gone from a boot of beer to no soap. Wherever shall we go next? :) Though admittedly, beer that costs ~9 GBP a pint does give one pause when considering a visit to this lovely island. I'll also raise my hand to be counted in the "no, I really dont fancy picking up a rental car straight off the airplane" crowd. Having that obligation does put a damper on enjoying the refreshments on a long flight. Thanks for doing this video.
That Amstel was the cheapest option too - you could pay a lot more! You get it back if you're into scuba though as you don't need a boat... And the lure of on-board refreshment is tough to decline!
born and raised on bonaire! I must say the no soap at your hotel room is odd especially coming form resort bonaire since they arew one of the more "fancy" hotels on the island.... We also don't apreciate the new "tourist tax" it was recently introduced.....
Thanks! Must have been a great place to grow up... Thanks for watching!
I go to🇧🇶now
Enjoy!
The manager washed his hands of you
Very good!
Some ctuise ships provide toothpaste.
Most airplanes do....
LOL as a hotelier, the soap issue is odd, usually there is at least soap. However It never ceases to amaze me that people don't travel with their own toiletries and expect hotels to provide them with Litres of shampoo and shower gel. The soap though is pretty odd and raises the questions about the staff hygiene especially if there a restaurant or bar. Looks like a fab place to visit and I havent used my PADI certification for years either. Great Video Matt. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy your location videos.
Hi there - have you changed your user name??? I tend to travel very light so take minimal liquids and I've always been able to rely on there being soap! Thanks for liking this video - you'll see from its viewer figures not many people did!
Rental car: "As I didn't fancy picking it up straight off the plane."
Matt, we're kindred spirits :-)
Edited to say: This place sounds like a money pit.
Ha ha! I'm often mildly refreshed when I get off a long flight which makes it unwise for that reason, but its just another hassle I can do without!
@@MattsPlanet We've picked up a car before in the USA, but Mrs 20 drove, and I've yet to find an airline that can serve me enough refreshments to make me drive worse than she does.
... proof that carrying $USD cash is always a good thing, anywhere in the world
It is a good rule!
@@MattsPlanet always try to carry a wad of $1 USD notes for tips
75 dollars is a scam.
Quite a few places do it....
I will not be going - all the major red flags here!
Fair enough!
What???
They didnt make up for thr slave trade by supporting israel.
Politics alert!
