Blender project file from the original video (with some more adjustments comparing to this): yadi.sk/d/62D3pT33M5cVsg
The project includes 16K HDRI which is used in the world material. If it affects your performance too much unpack this texture into a separate file (File - External Data - Unpack All Into Files), lower resolution using external editor and import back (or you may just replace it with any other star-sky HDRI).
This time we will finally recreate this Nebula from my very first Nebula test video created half a year ago.

I've found a mistake in the explanation of how absorption color works in Principled Volume. It does the exact opposite: when it is set to black it absorbs all the light it can depending on the level of the density. So the brighter absorption color is the less color it absorbs.
Really amazing output! Thanks for this. I also appreciate the fact that you explained some of the node settings too. That really helped a lot!
Thank you! )
My man! I just saw all of the 3 parts and I just gotta say I'm so thankful for all of this knowledge, you made me understand a lot more about how volumetrics work, thanks a lot! And keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I am really happy that my videos are useful!
keep up the great work, Andrey. Thanks for taking the time to record this!

Well, it's understandable. 500 is the same as 10,000,000 with just a few digits changed.
This is the first Nebula Tutorial in Blender wich is simple and also beautifull. Thank You!!!

This is beautiful. Thank you so much.
I've been fiddling with nebulae for a while. I've got the nice, natural shapes going on, the colors are realistic but stylized, but I could not put my finger on what was off about it. It never occurred to me that absorption color was the key. Thanks, man! Keep up the good work!

Brilliant tutorial! thank you so much, it looks lovely :) just wondering if you know how to add in an object so it shows when rendered, for example, I created a small planet that I wanted to put in the Nebula, but when I did a test image render the object doesn't show. Any advice on how to do this?
Thank you. In general, if objects are not hidden behind some dense parts of volumetric material they should render okay. There may be several reasons. First of all I would check out if the planet object is enabled for render. Also if there is no HDRI image in the World shader nor any lights in the scene, the object may just not be affected by any light source and remain dark. Volumetric shaders don't act as light sources in Eevee.
Youre awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! ))
Do you have a video that explains the animation process of the camera flying through the nebulae? Love the vids by the way!
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have camera tutorials. But there is the link to the Blender project file in the video description. I don't remember what exactly I've done with the camera for this project, but I'm pretty sure it was some common technique. Maybe parenting it to an Empty and animating Empty's rotation, or even directly animating camera's rotation - nothing too special anyway.
thank you so. much

for some reason, when i change the math to power, nothing changes. everything else on the screen matches his but is there a setting in my preferences that is missing?
I'm trying to press 0 while on viewport but I can't use the camera. I can use camera view in other ways but I can't move it like jtd a video game
I wish I could navigate like that using 256 samples on the volumetrics ... ineed to do it on 64 samples and crank it up before render... (i need a better GPU lol),
Great tutorial btw
Can't find the Map range converter node, I'm using Blender 2.9. could you help me?
🙄Well, it merely looks complex and hardly achievable... Wait a minute, it got a Blender project file already for download!😬 Fantastic!
the voice is fine :)
Thank you! 🤗
awesome video, can you also make a tutorial on how to make a galaxy no one has made a good tutorial on that
Thank you. I can't promise but I'll see what I can do. The way I did something similar for the True Motion Blur add-on presentation (the part with the gas clouds spinning around the star ready to explode) was pretty advanced. My computer could hardly handle this scene. I had to use Python scripting to get the right shape. Though I'm almost sure there must be a way to do it using the Texture Coordinate and some Vector Math. Wish I was good in linear algebra. ))
Hello, I don't understand how you manage to be so fluid when you move in the cloud, I have a big PC, TreadRipper 3960 and 2080TI, and I can hardly move in fly mode. What hardware configuration do you have? Or is there a slightly optimized blender configuration?
That's strange. I've got 2080ti as well, Ryzen 7 3700, 32 Gb of RAM, and I don't use any specific custom Blender configuration. I haven't tested it with the latest Blender versions yet, but when I'd been recording this video it worked pretty fast in Eevee. Anyway after getting some more experience I currently prefer to use Cycles for such kind of materials.
I cant even get shift+ A to work on the viewport to add the scale thing you said, or even Shift+ctrl+ click to look in viewport i just a beginner lost in the woods
Well, this tutorial is not for the absolute beginners, I guess. Shift+A in the viewport is for adding new objects. The hotkey for scaling is S. Ctrl+Shift+Click works in the Shader Editor only when the Node Wrangler add-on enabled (you can find it in Top Menu -> Edit -> Preferences -> Add-ons).
can we we have a rendered image please? your work looks amazing but my pc can't handle it :((
⚡⚡💥⚡⚡
Looks great on my viewport, but the render results are totally different and half of the volumetrics is always missing... Any solutions to this ? I tried pretty much everything including the volumetric distance start end + bumping the samples + playing with the nodes setup but nothing seems to work.
I've found out that Cycles works better for this kind of scenes. instagram.com/p/CJ3zhS3D294/ - here I explain how to fix the settings
Hello! I am having a ton of trouble with noise when I animate with the nebula, do you have any recommendations to help?
The more render samples - the less is noise but the higher is render time. You may also want to try using Denoise node in Compositor (maybe mixing the results with the noisy unprocessed image using Mix node). I usually use 3rd party plug-ins in After Effects for final denoising.
1 download the blend file, 2 me staring at the monitor, eyes getting biger and biger while wondering, FTW are this nodes xD i just have no vision what is going on there
Hello, it’s a nice video, bro! But can you answer the question, it there a way to export from blender? I made my first object in blender - nebula with this tutorial and would like to know how to export to another programs or something else. Which format I should export?
Shaders are parts of Blender render engines, they can not be exported.
Здравствуйте,Андрей При таких мах настройках не хватает детализации Ув семплов дает незначительный результат Много шума во вьюпорте и на рендере Как можно сделать облака более четкими и контрастными ? Может есть спасительный ползунок в настройках?)))))
Hello, thank you so much for the tutorial. the finished result looks great except for one thing, the glow/colors are wayyy to bright and Im not sure what is affecting it
I've also noticed that in the recent Blender versions volumetrics work a bit different comparing to what was before. So probably this setup needs some adjustments now.

Did you already have an animation sequence set up when you pressed CTRL+F12 at 14:50?
It was half a year ago, it's hard to tell now. As far as I remember this one I have rendered right from the tutorial project, maybe after adding some minor adjustments, like camera animation, etc. Of course the render speed is far from the real time. If I can keep it under 3 minutes per frame in such projects with 2080ti graphics card I consider it's okay.
@@AndreySokolov Ah, that helps. Here I thought I was in a bad spot doing 1 minute per frame hahaha~ I think I'm using a 1660ti, so I'll crank some things up :). Thank you
Quick question, so Ive followed the tutorial, but the object/cube is just black, and I'm not sure why..
Some things I could come up with is because I could not find the option "Power" in the "Add" thing, but other than that Im not sure. (Im kinda new to Blender)
It's hard to guess without seeing actual node setup. Does cube remain black all the time during tutorial? Are you sure all links from all nodes connected to the proper sockets? For example, Material Output has three inputs: Surface, Volume and Displace. If you try to link Principled Volume to the Surface input of Material Output it won't work because volumetric shaders must be connected to the Volume input. Power and Add are modes of the Convertor > Math node, they preform actual mathematical operations on the color digital data.
@@AndreySokolov i got same problem ,everything normal till i add principled volume the cube is black i dont know why mine is (blender3.5)
Is there a way to render only the stuff that you can see in the camera view? trying to render this on laptop and it crashes :>
In some cases Viewport Render may help. You can find this button in the 3d Viewport > Menus > View (don't forget to turn off all overlays because it will render them too). Also sometimes Cycles can handle the scenes which Eevee can't, although the result may be different.
@@AndreySokolov Oh thank you for your response! I'll keep everything what you said in mind ;D
Hi, i trying to render the results in EEVEE, but the nebula has the variance, what advise is there to render in EEVEE, volumetrics seem to be problems with Eevee
Try to render in Cycles instead. I explained how to set up this scene for Cycles here - instagram.com/p/CJ3zhS3D294/
These volumetrics make my GPU temp go above 65 degrees and I'm not happy with that. 3070ti with a ryzen 7 3700x. Any tutorial I do with nebulas created by volume do this. Any suggestions?
I think you may probably want to check up some tech articles about graphics cards optimal temperature ranges. As far as I know 65 degrees is the lowest range of temperature for graphics card casual work. But I am not an expert in a hardware, so please check it up yourself. Or you can try to render it in Cycles in CPU mode if you have enough cooling for your CPU and enough time to wait forever.
when I add Musgrave Texture mines says 'height" where yours says "fac"
any advice?
I think it may depend on Blender version. Height output in your version is probably the same as fac output in this one.
Me : *Pressing Ctrl f12*
Blender : not responding*
Eevee doesn't show render progress, and volumetrics need several minutes to be rendered, so there are 2 common possibilities. The first one - your computer will succeed to handle all the calculations and after several minutes you will get a render result of the first frame. If it is too close to limits there may be some visual artefacts on some frames. The second one - Blender will not be able to finish all the calculations and will shut down. Some people wrote their computers blew up, but I hope these was jokes.
@@AndreySokolov lol I only have 8 g ram and nothing else ಥ‿ಥ
I think subtitles would really help.
I think the Artificial Voice was made in Canada...
i want to make a similiar thing for a skybox for a game am making can i follow this but on cycles ?
You will need to change some settings in the nodes setup and in the render properties because Cycles works with volumetrics in a bit other way than Eevee. But I can't tell right now which ones exactly. On the other hand as far as you don't need the stereo VR image - another quick tip - in Eevee you can add 6 square cameras to the same location (change scene resolution in the Output Properties) with their angles of view set to 90 degrees, rotate them perpendicular to each other to get the cube map (front, back, left, right, top, bottom), make render from each of them and use them as the textures on the cube with emission shader in the separate Cycles scene (it may take some time to place all 6 images onto the right sides of the cube with the right angles), add a panoramic camera in the center of the cube and make a render.
@@AndreySokolov Hello Andrey, i already gone ahead and tried to play arround with almost the same thing you mentioned i didn't get the cool results you ve achieved with Eevee and in game i really didn't like how the skybox turned out because of that anyways thank you for this amazing tutorial
Does this work in cycles too? I noticed cycles doesn't have volumetrics
Sure it does, but it may need some nodes and render settings tweaks. Actually with proper render settings Cycles works with volumetrics even more efficiently than Eevee. Here I've rendered this in Cycles with some minor changes - instagram.com/p/CJ3zhS3D294/?igshid=pccp5y67au2x
I am getting heavy lag on my camera movement how do I fix this
its because you set the Volumetric Tile size on 2px (as said in the video, yes), which is a strong GPU demanding setting. Andrey probably has an insanely powerful PC configuration to be able to fly around like that.
Anyway, just keep the tile size on 4/8px depending on your PC.
How much time to render this.? I've did and when I render theres no quality at all.. looks good in vieport though. tried cycles as well and even with 1024 samples theres lots of noise and took almost 20 mins for a single frame. i have a gtx1650.. but how to get good quality render in eeve
Here I explain how to set up this scene for Cycles - instagram.com/p/CJ3zhS3D294/ If I remember correctly I've been setting something like 300 render samples and probably used some temporal denoiser on top
Hi, i'm new to blender and i don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've follow the steps, but when i add the last multiply node, my cube doesn't change. Stays flat on the inside, and my clouds disappear. Stays the same way as the cube on your video in the minute 7:56. Great tutorial btw.
Hello. Did you connect Principled Volume to the Material Output's "volume" socket after adding the last Multiply node, like on 8:08? It may take several seconds after that before volumetrics visually appear in the Viewport, depending on your hardware. This is pretty resource-intense. Oh, and also check that nothing is connected to the Material Output's "surface" socket anymore (including Viewer).
@@AndreySokolov i tried that already and double checked the node, mine happened to be just a white cube
@@orcafish5176 that's strange. Is the shading mode in the 3D viewport set to "Rendered" and nothing is plugged into the "Surface" input of Material Output node?
@@AndreySokolov thank you for the respond,it was on rendered viewport and nothing is plugged into the surface input of Material Output node ,maybe i'm missing something but i just started it over again and apperently it fix my problem.
@@orcafish5176 so the problem is fixed? Cool! Sometimes Eevee just doesn't show what expected, for some reason. In some cases switching there and back berween frames also helps, but not always.
when i used the node wrangler the " viewer" text box thing in the shader didnt show up and now i dont know what to do for 3:51
In the latest versions of Blender Viewer node was removed as unnecessary. Now you can link any node directly to the Material Output node and it works just the same.
@@AndreySokolov what are you talking about? if theres no viewer node how will i make it not a square anymore
@@punu3675 Viewer node was just an Emission shader with strength equal to 1. It did not determine shapes or anything else, just visualized results of computations performed in other nodes. In current Blender versions those results are visualized automatically when you connect anything to the Surface input of Material Output node, therefore Viewer node became redundant and developers excluded it.
Bro what is your system config? I have tried exactly what u said, but at the render time my blender is closing
I suggest to try Cycles instead of Eevee. Actually in some cases it renders even faster and more stable. It needs some minor changes in the render settings, here I wrote them step by step - instagram.com/p/CJ3zhS3D294/

I don't know why eevee rendering is so slow to read data.
During the preparation, the screen will be black for a long time, and then a picture will come out.
I hope someone who knows why can tell me why
If you are using the project from the link, it may be because of the HDRI image in the World settings. This is 16K image, so it can significantly slow things down. Try to go to the World settings in the Shader Editor and disable Environment texture or replace it with another HDRI.
@@AndreySokolov Thank you. I did my project by following your tutorial.
The slow rendering may be due to the fact that I copied multiple nebulae.
At the resolution of 1920x1080, I need to wait more than 4 minutes for a picture. Sampling 256
Maybe it's normal. I need patience.
@@KJ-hb7ng yes, 3-5 minutes per frame depending on your computer is totally ok for those settings. The rendering of the volumetrics takes a lot of time even though this is Eevee.
I am trying to do this in cycles instead of Evee cause Im having performance issues. does it have to be evee?
just tick the Tile size down to 8px
And, to answer your question, Yes, volumetrics work differently in Cycles as far as I know :/
What you can also do is reduce the viewport size :)

@@AndreySokolov I had to increase the tile size to 4 px, it did render but I also encountered another issue. There are some sharp circle lines around the centre of the frame. How can I show you the render so u could see what I mean
I think I know what you are talking about. As far as I know, this issue appears because of low Volume samples - that's why I set it to 256. Also I've heard that in the latest Blender versions they've improved Eevee volumetrics, but I'm not sure.
Although... sharp circles are often caused by volume distribution value

Yes, unfortunately the volumetrics in Eevee still need pretty good hardware to be handled properly. If you use the project from the link, you may try to disable or replace Environment texture in the World settings. Also you may try to leave Volumetric Tile Size at 8 px: the results will be way less accurate, but at least it gives a chance to have some results.
