Thank you so much for this video! My Dad recently passed away and as you can imagine, things have been rough. Not to mention everything seems to be breaking down in his house now....Its like the house knows he's gone & its giving up too...But I won't let it! I didn't know how to fix the leak and would have called a plumber & spent $100. Instead I watched your video & did it myself. Thanks for sharing your knowledge & empowering me to do things for myself at a time when I feel the most helpless. Thank you!😘🙂
I just bought a kit at Home Depot that was $50. The kit has pretty much everything new. If I can get it to work and not leak I figure I'm probably going to save $300 or $400 because I didn't need a plumber.
You forgot a very important step. Step 1 put the drain plug in or put a towel over the drain! Losing a screw down the drain turns this into a nightmare.
Thank you! I replaced my stem valves and seats this morning ... about 45 minutes and I was done. Total cost ... $52 - no problems and no leaks. I was very happy! (I just used a dab of plumbers grease around the new seats to aid installation). Honestly, for peace of mind, for about $12 for the removal tool and two new seats, it makes sense just to replace the seats while you have those valves out. Also, you may pay a little more, but going to a faucet supply store can be well worth it ... you take in the old parts and the guys know exactly what you need. (Advice at Home Depot, etc. can be hit or miss, depending on who you ask). Just my observation ... be careful if using an Allen wrench to replace the seat. Unless the wrench is a very tight fit, you risk rounding out the hole in the seat. As the removal tool is tapered, you are assured of a very tight fit ... and some of those seats are in there quite tight.

Great educational video. I'm impressed with who ever made the openings in the tiles. I've never seen such a neat job.
Without a doubt this is one of the best "how to" videos on here! My father could build or repair most anything in his basement workshop but rarely imparted that knowledge to me. "It's easier if I do it myself Kev, you wouldn't understand." Well somewhere mid-life I finally got the self-confidence to try things. And guess what, Dad? I usually can do it - especially with a good teacher! Thank you so much for posting this and know that you just saved me several hundred dollars from what a plumber would have billed as a "major repair"!!!
I cannot thank you enough for this wonderful video! My townhome was built in 1974. It’s my first home and I’ve hardly done any plumbing. This video was a God send! Thank you for your professionalism and for sharing you skills!
Was able to do this myself except for a couple of stuck pieces that my husband helped. This saved us a lot of money that we did not have to spend on a plumber. Just a note, the replacement valves I purchased had the seal loose at the front screw and the packing nuts were also very loose causing leaking from the from of the valve. Once both were tightened no leaks. Thank you for the great instructions!
Fantastic video! I've always been capable with simple plumbing but never had to get into the shower valve assembly. Our house was built in the 60's and we've been here for about 20 years. Our hot water tap washer was constantly failing over the years. I never had time to do anything about it so my wife would call a plumber to change out the washer and problem temporarily solved. However, that simple repair was not cheap! I saw your video a couple of months ago and bought a Danco repair kit for Price Pfister. It included everything you would need to change everything out, even the cowbell. I bought a seat wrench for $6. I was going to wait to tackle the repair once the washer failed again because it was all working fine. Well, tonight it failed. I took a shower when I got home from work and the hot water wouldn't turn off! I turned off the water main, re-watched your video and went to work! Everything went smoothly except the diverter is pretty much fused and I can't get it off easily. As the hot and cold taps were my main concern, I cleaned up the old diverter knob and left it for now. I put everything together and turned the water back on. When I returned to the bathroom, all was quiet. all was dry! I turned on the faucets and they worked perfectly! I have no idea how long this kit will last or how strong it is as the knobs feel kinda light. Time will tell but for now, the taps are dry and the valves are tight! Thank you for an excellent instructional video! You've earned a subscriber!
The best video for fixing our leaking faucets! Thanks for including tips like washer orientation (letter side down) and setting the cartridge in the on position before screwing back into the seat. Other sources didn't have that level of detail. It's much appreciated.
This Video was beyond helpful Danny! Well put together! As a low voltage EC/technology contractor I'm familiar with tools. But! Water dripping and molding scares me. My business is ZERO WATER. You're DIY self video just walked me through the exact replacement. And it went flawless! My shower has been leaking about 1 gallon / 3 hours! Thank you for sharing insight and the little tricks that make a job go smooth!
I’m in the same boat with the massive leak and I’m about to embark on this journey. I’m a little nervous but I have the same faucet system so I’m praying for a flawless replacement as well. Do you have any tips for this rookie?
Awesome how-to video. Saved me having to call a plumber and I felt fully confident changing out the stems thanks to your thorough walk through of the steps. No more leaky shower head!
Thank you so much for your walkthrough. We had started to get used to cranking down the faucet in order for it to stop leaking. I would always need to change the gaskets every few weeks. I was almost going to have the whole faucet fixture replaced. Your video is the only one I've seen that mentions that the SEAT can be changed. I knew my seat was completely torn but I thought it was integral & part of the whole fixture. Now we barely have to turn it to close the water flow :D Also great that you mention that the valve should be fully in open position before screwing the vale in. Sir, you are worth your weight in gold.
I'm a woman in my 60s and I was able to do this. I was happy to learn about the shut-off screw under the tear-drop escutcheon plate because I live in a condo. But when I took it off I found that the shower installers had not cut the hole big enough to reach the screw. I needed to buy a small saw to cut the hole a bit bigger. I just went step by step and every thing worked out fine!
I've watched a variety of videos, and I must say that you are very impressive. You gave more information than any other that will help with avoiding going back and forth, trying to figure out what went wrong. One of the sadest parts of life is buying expensive bathroom fixtures and then finding out that you can't buy the stem valves anymore. I'm hoping that the repair kits that I ordered will alleviate having to buy a clawfoot tub faucet that holds a handheld shower arm. Have you ever had an issue with a lever handle turning 360 degrees that won't shut off the water? Currently am forced to shut off at the shut-off valve. I've been screwed over and over by Plumbers who should know better. Wish me luck. And thank you for taking the time to help those of us in need.
You saved my life! Ran into quite a few issues that had me second guessing myself today, but your video gave me the confidence to proceed and succeed. Thank you!
Wow the most comprehensive video ❤ Teaching my daughter how to do basic Home improvement skills. Love the technical verbiage, video clarity and excellent amount of detail. I watch 4 videos prior and this one was like all 4 in one video. Thanks for your hard work.
You're a life saver bro, I've changed the valves in my shower about once every 6 months for the past five years and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't last. THE SEATS WERE DEMOLISHED!!! I'm hoping that this time, since I changed the seats too, they'll last a lot longer. Plus, you saved me about $22.00 because I bought valve repair kits (which contained new seats) for $2.32 each rather than a new valve for $13.25 each. Thanks man, keep up the good work, I'll be checking out your website too.
Was looking for an hour for a video of how to rebuild the stem, all others just show how to replace the stem. Finally found it! I like that you leave the parts where you screwed up :)
Wow... You're the best Bath faucet anatomy teacher I've ever seen. Now I clearly see why 1.2 million prior viewer have watched your clip. Way to go and thank you a lot for your great work and excellent demonstration. Please make more videos when you can make them this good and I wished you were local to me. Needless to say, Thumb upped, Subscribed and checked the bell. 👍👍👍
Fantastic job. Best RUclips video I've seen while researching any of my home repair projects in recent years. It is awesome when a specialist makes no assumptions and instead fully describes and demonstrates every step, including the reasoning and result. This 32 minute video was a pleasure to watch front to back, with many retreats to fully grasp. In contrast the 2 or 3 minute assumption videos are insulting and borderline worthless, especially when there is no audio.
This is the far BEST video on the subject. I will be rebuilding my PF bathtub/shower assembly tomorrow. I got all parts in hand and now the knowledge. Thank you!
I have 0 experience of plumbing but you explained it so well i just learn something i never thought i would learn.... Thank you for the excellent job on explaining it. Awesome video..
thank you for your help. i watched your video a few times and took notes. one piece of advise: when closing the internal water flow with the flat head screw driver be careful not to twist too hard or it can chip off the metal since metal rusts. i had to purchase several of the tools needed here: the cow bell (shower valve socket wrench) and a faucet seat wrench. anyway, so far, so good. thanks for helping out your fellow human beings. blessings.
Wonderful Sr. it is one of the most complete video I have watched in YOU TUBE where you really cover steps by steps how to remove and put back each part and tools to use, slow explanation in every detail to do this job. Thank yo.
Thank you for this video. I changed all three on my bathtub / shower. One thing I noticed, The hot and cold turn off in different directions. The Phister directions said both counter clockwise. make sure you have them fully closed before removing them. My diverter was hard to get out. I unscrewed it, then had to put the handle on it to rotate it to get it out. I really appreciate you posting this.
Spot on presentation. 💦 I’ve been repairing or replacing my PF shower valves for years. I keep all of my replacement parts and tools close by when needed. Your step by step video is resourceful to refer to. 🔧
Great video. I need to do this on 2 bathtubs this week. I feel a lot more confident. Thank you for identifying the size of the cow bell needed and also showing the replacement of the seat. I am getting a seat wrench today.
Thank you for this video! I am a single woman and I do a lot of my own repairs (to save money of course). This video helped me replace the leaking side of my shower. You did a great job explaining the process step by step. Thanks again!
I am ready to attempt the replacement of my basement bathtub handles. Thank you for your detailed explanation! I've done bathroom faucet stem repairs in the past (and replacements) but this is my first tub handle replacement
Thank you! I had success replacing the hot and cold water stems including the seats. I am a beginner at Plumbing projects like this. It was actually very easy.
Although I pretty much knew how to do this, I was having a heck of a time getting the knob to come off, and wondered if I was missing something. This video and some high spirited wiggling, and a little pry persuasion, it popped loose. Very helpful, thanks.
Thanks for explaining that the knobs can get stuck. After trying penetrating oil, I resorted to grabbing the knobs with channel lock pliers, which finally did the trick.
Wow …. You did an excellent job on this instructional video. ….. I did this stuff many years ago, recently bought an outdated home, so it’s time to start over again. I felt a bit apprehensive, because it’s been so long. Now I’m ready to grab my tools and get back at it. THANKYOU
Thank you so so much sir! Im a single mom and do as much as I can on home maintenance by myself. I rebuilt both stems and diverter according to your video. Probably took longer than a plumber 😂 but I got it first shot! 👍
Serioulsy THANK YOU. You were the only one that talked about the packing nut which was also a problem and i didnt even know why my cold handle was leaking when my hot was on.
Great video - watched and then replaced both faucets plus diverter. Went just about as smoothly as it could have. I’ve subscribed and will share with friends. Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much! I was about to fix my shower/tub (same brand) as it was dripping, and thanks to this video I had the confidence to do it myself! I'm very hands-on but since this is a rental I was fearing breaking something but again, this video helped a lot (also using the right tools). At the end of the day, buying the tools I needed was always cheaper than calling a plumber! I might add also that if it wasn't for this video I didn't knew about the small valve seat (wasn't planning to replacing after noticing that the washers were worn out and that might fix it) but it came out when I unscrew the stem and fell down the wall (ugh!), one more trip to the hardware store and done! Thanks again.
As a handyman I was I don't know if excited was the word but felt some sense of relief when at 25:56 or so you dropped the f-bomb which is what I want to do when I'm doing plumbing like this...
I should’ve watched this video before I started talking everything apart. I went to Lowe’s had to buy everything (brand name)separate $147 including the trim pieces and handles Just for the heck of it I went by Home Depot. They have a complete kit (aftermarket) with everything including the tool to remove the valves for $57 and you don’t have to spend half an hour looking for all the different parts. They also had valve rebuild kits for $7 apiece. I ended up just keeping the brand-name parts. Worked well after watching the video.
Nice job on the video. I would add that a small simple two jaw puller pulls those handles quickly and effortlessly. I would never spend fifteen minutes wiggling the stem. Simply back off the screw (a phillips works best in this case) and center the puller on the screw after you have turned it counter clockwise a couple of turns. I do use pipe dope on the cartridge bonnet just so they will be easy to get off the next time. While there checking and new seals on the diverter is a good practice. The friction on the stem seal is determined by how much the nut has been tightened so while it is likely that you will see no leaks the stem can still be very loose if the packing is not tightened sufficiently. The handles feel wobbly in that case.
Thanks for the tip, Doug not only on using a two jaw puller, but how to use it in this instance. No luck at all wiggling the trim off. Danny the plumber did an amazing job with this video and your tip will help me to finish it off. 🥳
Excellent video. Yes on handle puller. I also add some dope or some clear silicone on the stem broach. And if I’m out of handles and it’s worn, a small dab of Oatey epoxy putty strategically put to not get into the screw threads can really do wonders to tighten up the handle to the stem.
Very good video...i tried other videos first, but I kept having a leak with the new stem. This video was very descriptive and tells you what to do, what not to do, and why...which was a great learning experience!!!
Excellent instruction....Good filming and plain speaking making it easy to follow....I'm an HVAC instructor, sometimes fill in for maintenance instructors and this is a very good video for students...Thanks to the gent that made it.
Had to view this video numerous times to figure out removing older model Price-pfister acrylic two-knob shower cartridges, but it helped. Needed further assistance from customer service number at Price-pfister by submitting photo to their site of shower knobs to figure out needed cartridge part 910-030. Single 29/32" or 31/32" deep socket wrench took out cartridges without buying set of deep socket wrenches. Only problem not covered in video was calcium water deposits built up in pipes caused low shower flow when water shut off and turned back on. Luckily, running hot water awhile without shower head into bucket seemed to have cleared clog deposits without using cleaning chemicals.
I replaced my daughters valve and seat with a new one. Also bought the tool to remove the seat. Everything went as you described with ease. I tightened the packing nut as you described also. No leaks. Thank you so much for this. Liked and subscribed. Now I'm trying to find your video on how to rebuild the old valve. Looks like it's a fairly simple thing to do and pretty cheap fix. Just something to do for fun and still useful. Thanks again.
Just finished up and everything works. Some small things had me second guessing until I found this video. Compared to a couple others I checked out, this seemed to cover everything. Thanks for the assist.
Excellent step by step video, you are an amazing instructor , you explained all the issues and the tricks. Couldn't have done it without watching your video thank you so much.
I didn't even know what I was looking for on how to fix my leaking shower since it was an old fixture of at least 40 years but it's exactly what you showed on this video and you explained it very well! Thank you!
Thanks so much. Your video is the only one that mentioned the stop. Now I can replace the washer. I didn't know how to find my water shut off in an apartment building. Now I see that I don't have to.
The best video, explaining in detail step by step, all I can say thank you very much, Gbu and your family, I think if the plumber see this video they don't like it.
Sometimes it's easier to break loose the knob by striking it once _toward_ the wall (as if you were trying to drive it _onto_ the splines. Use either a hard rubber mallet, or a wood block against the knob and a single firm tap with a hammer. This will crack loose a lot of the calcium deposit, without damaging the delicate back edge of the knob. Then you can work it loose with a towel as shown in the video, but it's often a helluva lot easier.
Hey How2Plumb, your videos are so detailed and clear educational, I really appreciated for sharing your great skills with such a great way, I wish you make a video to fix noisy plumbing, looking forward to it.
Excellent job! Clear, detailed, extremely helpful. The inner ring secret, you were a blessing and I was nervous, I can build just about anything but not good at plumbing. Thanks Bro I owe you a beer..or two.
I'm doing this in a rental house I have and this was excellent..I've not been able to get those handles off and in rebuilding not new cartridge so I'll see how it goes.
Excellent Video. Congratulations . I did follow step by step and 'DONE' Thank you very much for your time and help. I did save a lot of money. Sorry for the plumbers, I didn't have to call anybody, I was close to making a call. Thanks Thanks
Hi Denny the plumber thank you so much for your video it was a great help also thank you for being very detailed in your video that makes a big difference for us DIY...... once again thank you so much....
Very good thoroughly explained video, Helped me and I know it was helpful for many. When you only tier into something like this every five years or so it sure helps to have this to brief up on. Thanks for doing the Video.
At 11:11 I'm amazed that the female thread the metal seat screws into is in good enough shape to accept the new seat. Great video, thanks for so much great detail (especially using a seat wrench on a tap for a tub/shower situation).
Thank you so much for taking time to make this videos I learn some thing new you explain every thing very well you are awesome ! God bless you and family.

Nothing some beautiful plants can’t fix. Huh?
$100?! I just had a plumber here in LA quote me $850 to redo just the hot side! 😱
I just bought a kit at Home Depot that was $50. The kit has pretty much everything new. If I can get it to work and not leak I figure I'm probably going to save $300 or $400 because I didn't need a plumber.

When I purchase these parts do I just tell them I want the whole package to change the hot and cold water valves w/stems?
That’s exactly what I was thinking. All the steps without overkill on information either.

Great job explaining in detail step by step. It really helps for those that have never done it or don't do it everyday.
The seat was my problem the whole time. Saw many videos. You the only to cover the seat so far. Great job.

Nice!
The best complete video on this matter. Hands down ! I have watched over 8-10 videos on this topic. Great job !
This was the best and most informative video on rebuilding the PP 3 handle system that I found. It was just what I needed. Thank you!
ZZZ.
Oh yeah 💯 explanation thanks I fixed both my bathrooms with your help but for bigger problems I call an expert plumber.

Excellent explanation! You said just enough without too much editorializing.
You would be a great teacher.
Thank you! I had success replacing the hot and cold water stems including the seats. I am a beginner at Plumbing projects like this. It was actually very easy.
You did such an excellent job explaining the process step by step, I was impressed and had to became a subscriber! Excellent video!! Thanks!
One of the best RUclips "how to" I have viewed. Thanks so much.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm changing out my stems today. This is exactly what I needed.
Taaať
BEST TUTORIAL. covers so many vital things like snugness issues on the packing nut, CLEANING PARTS, and thankfully knows when to FFWD the vid!
Thanks for the support!
You are an extremely good teacher. Bravo! We like your video. Its so thorough but not boring! Thank you.
Serioulsy THANK YOU. You were the only one that talked about the packing nut which was also a problem and i didnt even know why my cold handle was leaking when my hot was on.
Thank you for the stepp by step movement & nice explanation. From the Philippines.
You sir, are a plumbing GOD.
I bow down to your greatness. I have saved this video and subscribed and THANK YOU!!
I went to Lowe’s had to buy everything (brand name)separate $147 including the trim pieces and handles
Just for the heck of it I went by Home Depot.
My shower was not leaking at all, I replaced washers and screws just to prove myself I learned something from this video 😃
With so many crappy instructional videos on the internet it's refreshing to watch this one. THANK YOU!
Very good video...i tried other videos first, but I kept having a leak with the new stem. This video was very descriptive and tells you what to do, what not to do, and why...which was a great learning experience!!!
Patiently explained all the steps for replacing the stems of the valves. Thanks for the good step by step procedure.
Excellent instruction....Good filming and plain speaking making it easy to follow....I'm an HVAC instructor, sometimes fill in for maintenance instructors and this is a very good video for students...Thanks to the gent that made it.
I have the exact same setup.
But finding a plumber like this guy??? Good luck!
Excellent video with many details not found in other videos. Thank you for this gem.
I'm just tearing it all out and redoing the entire plumbing, this is soooooooo many steps
You provided valuable information and your presentation style is easy to understand. Thank you for sharing.
This is great help. Just switched out the exact situation. New handle, flange, and spout arriving tomorrow. Do they need to be sealed in? The flanges.
super clear instructions, and best of all no wasted time -- thanks for the insightful lesson! Now I'm going to DIY my leaky shower faucet.
We would never have been able to fix our leak without calling for help had we not watched your video. Thank you!
Thank you!
Very instructional video I've seen others and i got bored because they just talking with no sense at all. Thanks for share your knowledge.
Hey thanks man I managed to fix mine with no problems. Only had to make two trips to the store because the seals were different than I expected.
Thank you for making this video. I was able to fix my plumbing problem by myself and save a lot of money!
Thanks so much. Your video is the only one that mentioned the stop. Now I can replace the washer. I didn't know how to find my water shut off in an apartment building. Now I see that I don't have to.
Just another tip. To clean a stem of the calcium deposits, you can soak it in vinegar for a few minutes. Cleans all of that crud up.
Very good tips and tricks that helped make this go so quickly, thank you
The best video, explaining in detail step by step, all I can say thank you very much, Gbu and your family, I think if the plumber see this video they don't like it.
Best most detailed step by step I have seen...
M. Aziz might be your pressure. have you checked it in awhile? anything over 70 or 80 is high.
most detailed video and i have watched a bunch of these....
What a wonderfully informative video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You're a born educator!
Thank u soo much . I never the a plumber job before and with this video everything came out perfect ..... 🥰 thank u thank u thank u . U r the best 👌
Thanks for the tip on the packing nut. I installed factory new valves and both leaked when I opened the faucet. All it needed was tightening.
You explain things very well make everything very easy to understand thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thank you so much. You did such a great job of explaining everything. You also saved me alot of money by being able to do it myself. Really thank you.
Good video, excellent explanation. I have an American Standard stem system but the tips you gave apply to all similar type systems.
Very good video and I like the way you explain everything in all parts thank you for shearing such important project,
At 11:11 I'm amazed that the female thread the metal seat screws into is in good enough shape to accept the new seat. Great video, thanks for so much great detail (especially using a seat wrench on a tap for a tub/shower situation).
Thank you so much for taking time to make this videos I learn some thing new you explain every thing very well you are awesome ! God bless you and family.
Thanks for the support!
