I think this is my favorite on this first record. To think they are about 20 years old when they wrote and recorded it. Alex was playing way above his years here, in my opinion.
Thank you everyone for the well wishes! I truly appreciate everyone thinking of me during my illness. I'm seriously feeling so much better than I was just yesterday! I've already started recording some Supertramp! Hope you all stay safe and take care of yourselves. This sickness was no joke and I wish it upon no one. Keep on rockin' everybody :)
John Rutsy is the drummer on the entire first album. He was no slouch. There are a couple of early videos of Rush performing with Rutsy, floating around on YT. You’re gonna know it’s Neil Peart when you play the first track off Fly By Night! Enjoy!
RUSH was Special out the Gate!!! This is a pure rock and roll album!!! Neil enter’s “Stage Right” on the next album and the rest is history!!! 3 GOAT’s
One of my favorite Rush Tunes. Yeah Geddy wrote the lyrics. They were special right off the bat. John Rutsy fell ill. "The new guy", came to audition out of his rusty old Ford Pinto with his kit in Alex's basement. Geddy and Alex said, "Wow! This is no ordinary drummer!" The Professor expressed his desire to write lyrics. Geddy and Alex were beyond happy to write the music. The rest, slowly became history. Kudos for John to help get them on the map with something a little different.
These guys were way ahead of their time. Alex is such an underrated guitarist. I've seen them 79 times in concert since 1976. They are so so awesome...
I am glad you are feeling much better. Yes, John Rutsy was the drummer on the first album. Neil did not join the band until Fly by Night. There is a quiet intensity to this song.
Here's the bluesy song you were asking about. :) Probably my favorite on this album. Between strong bass and Geddy's voice and the rest of it is enjoyable too... Alex then comes in and lays it down...
Such a beauty! This is hardly played and a fabulous track. The mix, the feel, just a musician's tune. Geddy belting like crazy!! Then OH MY, Alex's guitar solo sounds EPIC!
This is one of the few songs on their debut album that I actually think was up to the high standards they set later in their career. The lyrics were kind of intriguing and not just an inspid paeon to chasing girls, and the instrumental and vocal performances were excellent. It really builds to something great. Edited to add: the song seems to be about eternal recurrence, and how it can cause you great angst. It's pretty deep for being so early in their career. And Neil wasn't even there yet.
Good to see you back. Glad you're healthy :) This is my favorite track off this debut album. Lyrically, this album is very obviously PNP (Pre-Neil Peart), lol
Jon Rutsey was a severe diabetic who wasn't treating it. His health was in rapid decline. They had not hired Neil until after they had to replace Rutsey. Neil came in for an audition and they sent everyone else home.
Rutsey had addiction issues. Health was the excuse, but with John in the lineup, crossing the border would have been a nightmare. As told to me by John Rutsey's nephew. More than once.
John Rutsey, who passed away in 2008. Evidently, the record label told him he had to quit before the upcoming tour or he'd come back in a box. Thus the hiring of Neil
Hey John. I feel this was their first progressive rock tune. Their first dip of the toe. Love to see you review What You're Doing from the same album. A very funky tune, with an awesome bass drum pattern from John Rutsey. 😊
While Neil Peart was not on the first album he joined the band for the tour of this album due to John Rutsy;s health problems (John was a type one diabetic).
Hey man, good to see your on the mend. This song is about becoming stagnant, being stuck in a rut, however that manifests in life. This song is a great axample of a point ive been trying to make with some of your other viewers and that is that Rush already sounded like Rush here. Other than the merely mortal drum arrangement, this song could be on Farewell to Kings, or Hemispheres, with a little polishing. Neil made Rush a much better band no question, but to say they didn't already sound like Rush...with all due respect. . . WHAT?
I typically think of this one as 'Baby Rush'. They definitely sound like Rush, but with the training wheels on, so to speak. Once Neil's added to the mix... 🤷 Well, full Rush-ness was achieved! 😁
@@clockworkangel4026 ok, i see where your going but they were already at least as good as everyone else around, for the most part, so instead of training wheels maybe we could say," they were great, but when Neil showed up they strapped on the rocket boosters and left everyone else far behind! Lol
🙄 Nope... Not gonna make any comparison to other bands. 😒 This that " I'm heading to the restroom song". 🤗 Little did we know we'd soon be sitting thru a 25 minute Opus! 🤷🏿♀️ Ya don't know wha' ya don't know.... 😁🐰

So, so good.
Much Wholesome Goodness!
This might be my favorite off the first album. Alex has such great feel
Absolutely envy anyone who got to see Rush play this live in a small venue. Love this song!
One of my favorites on this album! Thank for giving it some deserved exposure.

Alex killing it with the guitar already on the first album!
Blues rock at its best ..his voice is awesome on this ....first recorded when they were 1 7 ...incredible

My favorite from the album. And that's saying a lot.

John had some serious health problems, which plagued him most of his life...
Glad you’re feeling better Jon! This is a great deep cut, the solo is so good.🤘🏻🔥
Thanks John for getting into these deep cuts from Rush. Really takes me back to high school days.

I was waiting for someone to spell John Rutsey's name right!!
🎼🐐🐐🐐🎶 🎙
Noticed most of the spellings for John's last name are incorrect. It is Rutsey.
Good album but very obvious Rush had a lot of growing to do which they soon did when Peart joined

really didnt know that
and a heroin addict, according to his nephew

@@stevenpipes1555 I can totally agree with that! 👍
Ged's voice sounds like Steve Perry in some spots on this tune
At the start of their career Led Zepp influence as they developed their song writing skills,

Christ it’s not that hard. This album is all John Rutsy. Like all your reviews though lol
