Every time I watch Charles's videos I think, man he can't get any better than last time, he's already at the highest level, and yet - he always pushes it beyond that. I can only imagine how much time it takes him to learn, practice, and record all of this. The guy deserves millions of views every time. You have my utmost respect!
Thank you!
And you know he's good when he makes hard sound easy.
@@CharlesBerthoud Your awesome :)
@@avr1860 you're*
@@angycucumber4319 I'm big stupid, sorry :3
Charles: Can I-
Me: Yes. Yes you can. You know it, I know it, we all know it. And that's exactly why we're here.
It would be interesting to actually record a session where he fails, maybe put at the end of his vid all the failed attempts on those kind of vids (if there's any of course ^^)
@@ScareFire that's a cool idea. As a bassist, I'm always wondering what the tricky parts are to learn in these songs. I'm nowhere near his level, which makes it that much more interesting!
Indeed
That solo in Lingus was one of those few musical moments that changed my view of what music can really be
You know it's a hard song when Charles doesn't bob his head
OMG you are right 😂
Let's not forget Charles learnt Coltrane's Giant Steps completely by ear
That's how it should be done. Music is an aural art form.
@@ev25zv indeed.
Just like you learnt english.
How do you know he learned it by ear? Did he say it in a video?
If you learned giant steps note-for-note from a sheet music transcription, you would be missing the point of jazz. It would be the equivalent of performing rap covers.
Which style do you think is the hardest to play? 🤔
Meme genre
microtonal technical death metal
The hardest thing is to be unique.
@@KaonashiGuitar Please send a link 🤣
Hardest genre to play? Computer generated nonsense like Xenakis - "Mists", with absolutely no time signature or consistent motif. But on the other hand, if someone performed that piece I wouldn't (as a listener) know when (not if) they were screwing up.
In case anyone didn't know, Charles has a full cover of Paganini's Caprice 24 from a little over a year ago. It's well worth the watch (like all his videos)
Well I did know that but now I have to go back and watch it again !!! 😁
The problem with playing pieces that weren't written for you instrument is that what makes it difficult for that instrument might be quite simple for another. The Paganini for example is extremely difficult on violin because of the string changes, the bow crossings, the articulation, ie the left handed pizzicato which a bass player doesn't have to worry about. Having said that, there are likely pieces on the violin that are insanely difficult to play on the bass. While Charles is an insanely talented bass player and musician in general, I don't think playing violin pieces are a fair representation of classical music. But, as I am classically trained, I find it extremely difficult to improvise, so for me jazz is far more difficult. And Charles is right, classical can be technically learned with enough practice, but to play it musically is a completely different story. Some people practice a lifetime and still can't nail it.
It baffles me how good Charles is.
All jokes and memes aside I really hope history remembers him.
History will only remember him if we Like and Subscribe NOW! 8^)
The thing I never get over watching that "Lingus" video is how mind-blown the other musicians -- who are already IN SNARKY PUPPY SO THEY'RE FREAKING GREAT -- are in watching Cory H play that solo...
Cheers man! Jazz is quite intense in every single aspect man, but that is what makes it unique and fun
Amen, bro.
@@Tomatohater64 ye!
its also kinda weird and like, just random notes but sure everything's got its' poace
What I respect the most is that you've ascended to the point where technical skill doesn't matter because you've essentially mastered that. You only need to explore what you're unique mind can make by creating art. This is a skill that I very rarely see amongst high level musicians so it's really cool to see it. The next level beyond this is reinventing or developing an entirely new style for the topic you're focused on (BASS)
The best example is Tosin Abasin's guitar skill.
I truly wish you the best!!!
Charles, I really love how you defend both genres equally based on their own strengths and positive aspects. Interestingly -and I’m not trying to elevate this to a debate on these and other genres- these are the two genres I am most drawn to. I am classically trained (piano and trumpet, although both at the “avocation level,” not as my professional calling), and I also play guitar and mandolin (bluegrass, folk, singer-songwriter, pop, a little rock ‘n roll), so I enjoy those as well and they, too, have their own levels of difficulty. But it’s really refreshing to see a pro not just jump to the “I like this best” response if that’s one’s own preferences. Well done! Well defended, well illustrated, and as the other comments say . . . unbelievably well preformed! Kudos, and thanks for the perspective!
In middle school, one of my fellow orchestra members was featured on "From the Top", a showcase for exceptional young musicians, and he played the Sarasate. The very specific experience of "feelings of inadequacy as a result of watching a 12 year old playing Zigeunerweisen" just hit me in the feels, hard, from 20 years ago.
Watching charles play lingus is something i didn't expect to see but I'm soooo glad it happened

*Literally watching a video of himself*
That triplet part of paganini was the funkiest bass groove ever
When I first saw that Snarky Puppy keyboard solo I was in shock. The build, big picture musicality, and just plain chops made me say out loud that it was one of the best keyboard solos I've heard. The chords along with the lines just kept building until an unhurried, unforeseen, gently powerful climax at the end. I've been playing pro jazz piano since the late 80's and have a top five or so solos that rocked me, and this is one of them.
Keep up the great work on these vids, you bring the love of music back my world!
I swear. Why doesn't Charles have millions of followers? I'm going to end up in HR if I grab one more person at work and make them check out Charles' channel.
snarky puppy are one of my favourite bands, seen them a couple of times live, mindblowing!
Nothing is HARD for you Charles! You are the most amazing musician I have ever seen! JAZZ - CLASSICAL anything and everything you play is beyond brilliant!
This guy's a machine.🤯

"One of the hardest songs on violin." Makes a reggae backing track. Lol. 🍻
Someone gotta loop that second part fr

All of charles' classical covers sounded like Reel Big Fish or Streetlight Manifesto
I almost died 😂😂 Right away he pulls out the high speed polka
Haha ska Backing track haha

Impressive as always, and so smooth ! As a fan of both classical and jazz music, this one was a treat. Thanks !!
@CharlesBerthroud that solo you played at the end was beautiful!! You are a joy to watch/listen to!
I love how Paganini 24 has an almost ska feel when Charles plays it
Charles is definitely an alien. Incredible playing.
I love that solo over ‘All the Things You Are’; tasteful, yet technically mind-boggling! Thanks for the constant inspiration, Charles 😊🎵🎶❤️🙌
İ love Jazz songs played by you and your Schecter basses!
I love your work!!
What did I learn from this video? Someone needs to release a Paganini album with drums because that sounded awesome.
Exactly! 😂
i saw cory henry in the thumbnail and ive never clicked so fast lmao
I'd somehow never seen this video of him until now... I'm gonna be looking up a lot more of his playing 😳
@@CharlesBerthoud For some insane musicianship, check out his blues improv with Jacob Collier.
@@CharlesBerthoud your fav part of snarky puppy is probably that the bassist is the mastermind composer of all the band's music.
@@CharlesBerthoud you should also follow their drummer, Larnell Lewis. He's an insane guy. He flew to that live recording session and learned the songs on the way.

You should name that piece Winston's Tragedy, in honor of the fallen ones
Charles makes me suspect I have wasted all the years I've spent trying to write the perfect bridge for "Louie, Louie."
I snorted. 😂
I'm going to a gig the other weekend. Watching this makes me think everything is playable.
Charles is such an inspiration
Another enjoyable outing, Mr. Berthoud. Starting the day with one of your vids, is a brain infusion for bass players. Keep up the great work!
You are absolutly unreal. How long does these take you learn? Would love to hear you try some fast acoustic guitar stuff om bass, like Classical Gas by Tommy Emmanuel or Clap, Steve Howe
Bass cover of Asturias please!
those zildjian live videos are so awesome... snarky puppy with guest drummers etc. so good
Your conclusion is right;jazz and classical have there own ways of complexities but one thing is sure, the soul is the only real tool to understand and to appreciate it.
“Local man becomes insane at bass just to sell 30 second ad on RUclips”
That second classical solo sounded dope on bass
You sir... do not exist.
You are not human.
I consider you one of the best musicians in the world.
Thank you for sharing your work with us. It's an inspiration for life, even if one never knew what a bass was.
Incredible.
A tie is the perfect and only assessment of the difficulty levels between both genres.
I play sax and began with classical to develop technical skills and then moved on to jazz and funk for the freedom of interpretation. I have a love and respect for both genres and thoroughly blown away by Charles' virtuosity on the bass, which is actually my favorite instrument 😁
I’ve seriously listened to that Cory Henry solo 1000 times
CLASSICAL: Hard to play the right notes written in the past.
JAZZ: Hard to make wrong notes sound right in real time.
I agree, classical and jazz are both difficult in different ways. I play both regularly. They require their own approaches and each has some unique skill sets. But, there's much in common, and both are beautiful.
Beautiful explanation of these two genres. Excellent work.
Ah yes, Charles flexing his bass skills for 8 minutes and 54 seconds.
He literally didn't, you're fired
funny how the hardest classical stuff becomes a Super Mario soundtrack on bass
fantastic
Charles....love your approach to music....you are a phenomenal artist.! cheers !!
great solo against that shuffle! I actually preferred yours over the one you didn't play. I think speed shows a certain amount of skill but rhythm and groove is what makes a melody really stand out. Interesting notes leave you guessing and your solo was pretty good at that. Good work man.
Are you genuinely the best bassist on earth? Is there no piece you can't just look at and say "Yep, got it"?
look up Jaco Pastorius, Cliff Burton & Paul McCartney
The main thing is how can you remember the other's man improvisation? It's not about technic but about the way you are thinking. Jazz man cant repeat his own solo)))
Charles, I have seen some of the great Jazz bassists and contemporary bassists of our time in jazz clubs, but I have to say that technically, you are up there and above. It's just mind boggling.
I love how the first one sounds like you are playing along with a (smokin') polka band!
Cant believe he got cory Henry's lingus solo on bass so on the nose.... that's insane
It is, but it's only part of the solo lol
@@Napalm6b I bet you're fun at parties
OMG, Cory Henry's solo is one of my favorites ever, and you're SLAYING it on bass. Wow. OK, next, you have to play Larnell Lewis's DRUM part on Lingus, on BASS. I am SLAPPING "LIKE" NOW! ... oh, sorry, I think I'm violating some sort of bass copyright there ...
I appreciate that you put them both at a tie. I don't like the constant war on which genre/s is more difficult than the other. All genres have their own sort of quirks and reasons why they're difficult.
Respect! You brought in the original skanking Paginini! But dude you just bumped Paginini up a few, just because you Bassed it - thumbed it and OWNED IT! Massive respect to you, your infinite skill, and your passion.

Hi. You are so great and inspiring to hear and watch. Your timing and melodic feel is fantastic. I’d love to hear you play on more jazz fusion songs. Anyway thank you for the lovely musicianship 🙏
This is another level. Man, keep up the content. Love it.
Your summary was perfect. Some might say; "Fence-sitting". But it is appropriate. We should love both genres for different reasons.
amazing video as always, you're one of my biggest inspirations to play bass!
5:43 idk why but that one section reminds me of the bass undertones in The Salmon Dance by the chemical brothers. After listening I realize it’s not as close as I thought, but something about it made my brain jump to the song haha
I think Mr. Henry’s will go down as one of the greats ,my favourite still is Oscar Peterson,With Art Tatum taking a minuscule second , keep it up Chuck.
Great video, as always. Congratulations, Charles!
Charles your skills are amazing... thank you for sharing
With the classical piece at the beginning, I could hear the actual bass part which was recorded. With the next piece, I couldn't tell what the jazz ensemble's bass player was playing. Charles nailed the keyboard solo (of course), but I would have loved to hear the bottom (since I'm a bass player). On the violin piece, he has the advantage over violin because of his masterful tapping. Yes, classical does often include repeating themes, but so much was written on paper (Beethoven was deaf before writing some of his most famous music). With the jazz piece following the Coltrane thing (that's "too difficult for him as he plays it!!!), I can again hear the bass playing below the soloing.
Dude your ability and technique is absolutely incredible.
I love the sound of the classical violin pieces played on bass! A lot warmer!
When I hear a jazz solo I'm always amazed at the sheer talent and technique required to frivolously notethrow so much non musical nonsense
Holy crap. I already thought you were amazing but your right-hand technique on the very first piece just has me in awe. I came to bass from guitar and no matter how much I practice I still have to use a plectrum to get any speed on bass. Bravo, sir. Bravo.
I hope that you can hear my applause from all the way across the pond! Cheers, mate! Charles, you are a treasure to hear. And being able to witness such breathtaking technique is truly a marvel. All the best to you!
I really like how you included the sheet music for the classical solos. I hope you’ll use on-screen sheet music in more of your videos!
Maaaan! I love your improve!! It's refreshing to hear those without the slap & tap! ❤
The skill level here is absolutely amazing!!! How can anybody be that freakin good?!! Dude!!! You are a mythological BEAST!!!!
You nailed that Lingus solo. Great job!
u are really at another level of mastering the instrument , that's insane !
Your tapping is so good, man. A true pleasure to both hear and watch!
I haven't heard everything out there, but I've been a fusion fan since 1976.
The reason I think his solo is the best keyboard solo I've heard is for several reasons:
1. The beginning Rhodes
Chords. I was taught that a good solo is like telling a story, and that's what he does. This intro just gets you paying attention.
2. The switch to the synth begins subtly, but the story is getting interesting now; halfway through, the momentum builds with the percussion. That long run where he's looking off into space tells you that he's really gifted.
3. Then he adds left hand chords and follows some if the synth lines with chords.
4. Now he plays the same solo with BOTH HANDS!
5. Then the climax builds with the full band adding more momentum.
6. Then the goog guy gets the girl, and we are all smiles...
Just my nutty opinion.
Very great to hear and see all videos of You Bro Charles B. Amazing & Very Incredible TechnicS . Success and Salut to you Bro charles. B.

that first one (sohyun ko playing zigunerweisen) has become a meme on twoset's channel after they reacted to it. wonder if charles has seen that. the jazz improvisation at the end was really awesome i like it a lot.
When I heard that version of Lingus for the first time I got emotional about how amazing that keyboard solo was and you just smashed it, well done
i was expecting u made a video like that, great job always excelent
I'm so happy for you to have this insane talent. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
Improvisation is not about hearing before playing, but playing and hearing what your mind has prepared for you. You have the confidence that the keys you hit, are the ones you want to play. And then your mind takes off and your song is improvised.
Your bass play of the classic piece was way better than the girls'.
First bass line sounds like a jazz bassist hailing from rural Russia…love it
