The Man of a Thousand Songs himself, Ron Hynes, performs "House", a selection from his most recent CD, Stealing Genius. The Woodshed Sessions, Episode 14 rootsmusic.ca
To this Floridian-- new to the wonders of Newfoundland music--I was awed by this man at the NL Folk Festival. Simple sensitive lyrics, soft easy melodies, lovely fingerpicking guitar and a clear sincere voice all add up to pure genius. What a national treasure.
Agreed he is and will always remain as a song writing legend. I don’t know that I would say under-rated so much as under-exposed. Everyone I know that was actually exposed to his music agrees that he is a Canadian great. Unfortunately, I don’t think he was heard enough west of Fredricton.
Been listening to Mr. Hines for as long as I can remember. We are from Newfoundland and I am about to retire and head back. You can't beat fun and great music around the kitchen table for a great time. Just saying. 👍.
Ranks up there in the upper encholance of songwriters with Lightfoot, Stan Rogers & Dylan in my opinion.............R.I.P. Ron...God Keep ya, Love ya and Bless Ya.
Cant listen to him sing with out getting teared up! being from NL he reminds me of home every time! Thanks for the wonderful music and helping me bring back old memories!
It was late, reading local paper, RON HYNES TONITE @ the CARLETON, I called up. "SOLD OUT", great cat @ venue says, "is it just you", yes!, "I'll put a barstool at the end of the bar for you". Arrive, beertime, 5 mins later, Mr. Fantastic HYNES walks out of the private room & settles up next to me. We have a terrific chat. I indicated how much I absolutely loved this song, Mr. Amazing Hynes went on stage shortly thereafter - and played this song 3rd one into set. Following the set as he was walking past me he put his hand on my shoulder and a passing acknowledgment. Mr. Hynes I am forever indebted to your spirit. I grew up listening to you in nfld as a young boy. I felt "what a comfort it would be - if you would sit & talk to me" at the Carleton. Thank you. Mr. Hynes passed away on my birthday.
I have such awesome memories of the Wonderful Grand Band at the Palace in Halifax in late 70's early '80's. Sonny's Dream is a classic. Incredibly unique. Ron, a wonderful legacy for sure.
Saw Mr Hynes last nite at the Carleton (HFX, NS)...we conversed prior to the show - I talked to him about this song and how it rips me right in two - he told me the story behind it & proceeded to play it #2 on the set...thanks Mr Hynes...thanks
My father just had me search out "his cousin Ron's music." I'm finding these treasures all over youtube, this is beautiful. Wish I could have met you Ron.
I only had the pleasure of seeing Ron live once. It was at a performance of Live at the Vinyl Cafe, at the Playhouse in Fredericton. It is so sad that we lost these two amazing performers so quickly. They both brightened so many lives.😢😀
Saw Ron last night with Stuart McLean & The Vinyl Café in Portland, Maine. Loved seeing Ron doing so well...and loved my little piece of Canadian Home on Thanksgiving Monday. :)
I met Ron a couple of times. I saw him live fewer times than I would have liked. Above all else, I wish I could have had a couple of guitar lessons with him.
" house ",>>> my fav and my mother liked to hear it too ! I''m not much of a clubber But when I knew you were @ The Fat Cat Or The Rose, myself and my sister Rose and her husband Brian Goodyear would always show up to hear you sing a few tunes , It always a joy to me to hear you sing ,,, I'll miss seeing you around this old town you loved so well ! with that old familiar hat on your head and your ole guitar hung on your back ,,, shuffling your feet as if keeping a beat !
When Ron first began his battle I wrote a song of hopefullness and good wishes and sang it around the bonfire at Kemp sHORE; when I sang the part.."there's a cougar down at Kemp Shore, she's waiting there for you....." the crowd laughed and a girl yelled "What...only one!???? It was a fond response I was glad to hear. I wish you had heard it too.

You were lucky to have seen him. Hopefully you’ve found more artists like Ron. There are a lot all over the Maritime provinces of Canada. Cheers.
As a Newfoundlander this man is a legend from our island....
But in Canada he is the most underrated song writer
RIP Mr. Hynes

If it were not for this man, I would not have the motivation to learn the guitar.
Ron Hynes is truly the jewel of Newfoundland.
Absolutely Love Ron's talent!
RIP Ron.....Your music will live on...

Ron was such a talent. Can you imagine being in a small room with his voice?
Yes. He'd play like this at the Rose and Thistle
Love this as I do all of Ron's songs.

oh dont be so hard on yourself
ps...I think you meant ''loser''
too bad about the shitty set, man. Ron deserves an empty stage, only him and his guitar, none of this Red Green bullshit.
