not long before he died, my mom met him. she was listening to him in this small bar in the east coast. she was the last one to leave and her cab came. it was a cold, snowy night and when she went out to get the cab, it was his, so they shared it , and she got a chance to talk with him. she told me this the day he died. so i listened to this song, my mom said that her and my dad cried to this one. my dad doesn't cry. while i listened to it, i never cried so hard to a song, beautiful man, beautiful talent. i just wanted to share that story my mom shared with me, although I can't tell it like her. RIP Ron Hynes,, beautiful artist.
a very touching story Natalie! i really love this song and all the emotion and artistic sensitivity it displays...never met Ron Hynes but have been a fan of his a long time....i had many conversations with Dermot and was a major fan of his ...both of these men were as real as you can get...thanks for sharing this.
Can't believe the talent. A wonderful gentleman. Only had the the pleasure and privilege to meet with him once he is the epitome of gentleman and talent. Thank you for your songs from Newfoundland. Wayne.
The otherness of the mystic reached Ron. I never did meet him but I did meet him in the feelings of the magic of his songs and music. It was the same feeling as with the vistas of the cliffs and sea of this beautiful place or the wonder of the running dancing streams in spring.
I saw Ron do DRY at StanFest some years ago...I can still feel the chills it gave me...great songwriter, fine musician, and a nice guy to boot..he's missed...
Love this song, Ron. We swore we were "best friends forever" when you were 18 and I was 17. I miss you so much, and always will. With my love soaring to you somewhere. Sue.
You were friends with Ron? I remember he played at a local bar here in town and I have always regretted not going to meet him to this day! Such a legacy he left!!!
. @@sfillmore6470 Ron and I met in University St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada when we were both just finished High School. I was 17 and he was 18. We shared a birthday..Dec. 7th. He was young and sweet, and in town from his home town of Ferryland. We made a pact..best friends forever. I still miss him. He was a sweet guy, and my heart broke when he died. He loved writing songs,,just loved the wordcraft and the creation of melodies. Through all the years, we were there for each other. Ron Hynes was a darling and a true talent. Thanks for writing. Sue Roberts.
I saw Ron at the Pictou Lodge, with Brian Bourne of Rawlins Cross, not to long before he died. His voice was struggling, but his songs were strong. Got to talk to him on the break. Bought his CD "Crier's Paradise", I'd had the album but I wanted a CD. He apoligized for the price, $25.00, the original pressing had sold out and it was expensive to do a small run so he would have copies to sell at shows. He was hopefull his voice would recover. I felt privileged to see him in such an intimate venue, and to talk with him for a bit was very special.
I really must comment on this song... Ron you hit home to many who stood outside detox. ..I love to write songs and created some songs relating to addictions..Thanks Ron this works for me.
Every song that Ron has written is my favourite. I love them all, and only wish he would come to the Toronto area more. A true wordsmith and a GREAT Canadian singer, songwriter. Every song is a story. Thank you Ron Hynes.
Thanks Joey. I am in total shock and saddened by Rons passing. It'll take me a day or so to absorb the reality, but for now I send my condolonces to Rons family and friends. They must be devastated. You will be missed by many Canadians, especially me. God Speed.
Thank you Ron - I can remember the first time I met you at the Strand Lounge in Atlantic Place. Wasn't yesterday...but I will admit that I wasn't old enough to be there. Not sure any of us were. RIP in my man...
Don't think 'nice' is the right word. Interesting and enthralling and sung by like a man who's been there. Shades of Merle Haggard there. What a great voice.
never there Few survive to talk about that damn tall hill, the long walk up and the wind so fierce up at the top, up there. To the Ship & Friends in distant places and memories of good friend's faces Thanks Ron, airborne
I'm a big Ron Hynes fan but I don't and won't idolize anybody, especially someone who'd put drugs before anything else. He's definitely one of the all time great songwriters, and that part of the man and his music I have tremendous respect for. RIP.
@folkmusic1000 Nova Scotia is nice but I dont want any confusion. . Mr Ron Hynes is from Newfoundland- not the Maritimes. And great American folkies? What about Dylan and Guthrie and um. . . Peter Narvaez (though he is Blues and only hails from the States, he lives in Newfoundland as well!)
This is only a small sampling of what this Newfoundlander has done for the music scene in Atlantic Canada. Most of his lyrics would be more appropriately called poetry; poetry of the class of Leonard Cohen.

Wish I could have met you Ron.
Dark and powerful performance!
What a great loss. It breaks my heart that we lost him to drugs. Addiction is a nasty nasty thing. Safe home Ron, safe home.
alwaysomething@gmail.com You don't think that years of drug abuse killed him? He also died penniless. Research it.
I'm a big Ron Hynes fan but I don't and won't idolize anybody, especially someone who'd put drugs before anything else. He's definitely one of the all time great songwriters, and that part of the man and his music I have tremendous respect for. RIP.

Can anyone please help me find a guitar tab to this song? Would make my world!

Nice song
I think you mean 'timeless' not 'old' ;)
Looking Back ... Wish could have done something . Valium. Is. Not. The. Answer.
