Just to clarify... the kaossilator does record samples / loops onto it pretty much the same way a kp3 does; what it lacks is all the FX, which are replaced by hundreds of synth sounds. It's ment to be rather a complement to the kaoss pad, and existed in previous versions as well. By the way, the 'mini' line of kp's and kaossilators was worth-mentioning too, adding battery-operated portability and tiny size to the game...
Great video! The KP3 was a game changer for live looping and made the Soundbite/Cycloops units practically obsolete over night. Still totally usable today.
Well there were alternatives (loopy HD) back then but since beardy use them looper artist get them and made the “standard” until beardy ditched them (and gone beardytron) and roland released the rc505…
didn't realise about chopping the loops by selecting the numbers. I've got my KP3+ with my turntable sampling setup and also bring it out for looping and effecting synth stuff coming from the mpc. great machine I even picked up the kp2 as it was really cheap, even got my kp3 for $300 Australian which is a great price
What the loop options like I'm Turntablist and want to add a loop station and don't know about 505 or Kp3 ? I'm leaning to the 505 but I like the idea of the touch screen
My favorite piece of gear that I can’t stand using. I’ve opened my KP3 up dozens of times to fix the touch screen (usually would only work on bottom half of touch screen). Effects were great, and whenever I performed out with it, people were always perplexed and amazed by the sounds and lights. However, the final output audio quality is awful! Get ready for a small bit reduction of your music if sending it all through the KP. Not to mention....rca in and out only?? Jeeeeszzz.
Yeah I’d love for them to make a KP4. Use a modern touch screen and have 1/4” ins. Maybe just put some internal storage in the thing, the KP3 is so slow at saving and loading projects.
I had the original Kaoss Pad (the silver one). Literally brought it with my Highschool Graduation Money the day it came out. I still have it and still use it to this day. You know how the O.G. MPC's were. Great at everything but effects. I used to run my beats from my MPC into my Kaoss pad and go to town on them. I also used it to filter out music I was trying to sample. So I could isolate a Snare, kick or vocal I wanted. It was fun to use it in that way. I also remember Roland coming out with something that looked similar called a D2 that just confused the hell out of everybody even though it wasn't the same thing. The Kaoss Pad did teach me the best lesson of all about music gear and that was to not listen to anybody's opinion. I remember people thinking this thing was a "toy" like you said and just brushed it off but this was a full on audio tool that was actually pretty cheap for all it did. Unless you dropped $300-400 for a Lexicon for effects, and few G's into a MPC 3000,or 2000XL, or an E-MU ASR, You weren't going to get anything that sampled and did effects. I think the cheapest option might of been a Dr. Sample. and that had no where near the effects of the KP1. So to get a mini sampler and effects box for like a couple hundred bucks with this new high tech light up "touch pad" technology no one had ever seen before at the time was kind of crazy. I think now people would laugh at that idea because everything has a touch screen or pad but back then that was like having an iPhone 1 when everyone else had a LG Flip Phone.
A key thing to clarify about Beardyman is that he was creating songs from scratch on the spot using only his voice (beatboxing and vocals). I wouldn’t call him a DJ, rather a performer. And a genius one at that. He’s still doing this, however his current setup is from another dimension. Check him out!! Great vid, made me appreciate my KP3 a lot more. Thanks!
Man, I remember when I first heard about the kaoss pad, it was this hardcore electronica crossover band called enter shikari that used it back in like 2008. Hella dope shit
The cool thing about the KP3 is it’s from 2006 but it’s actually got class-compliant USB MIDI. And it’s super easy to use as an X/Y MIDI controller for synths or FX. The noise floor on the KP3 is so bad it’s not usable on a send, but it’s great for controlling an Eventide H9 or for assigning it to modulators on a rack synth.
Yo Dyreck...I truly appreciate you and your help with the REAL downlow...I love it when something I own comes under your scope....especially the SP 808...circa....1995...keep it groovy my man. Warm regards, Alan Glen 😀 a fan

As an ode to early RUclips this video is treasure. Damn how did we get here?! My old ass...ps.i've seen so many performers rely on a Kaos pads for looping and fx to this day ( Yes mainly on the Tube! ) Shit stills goes for silly money online.
I bought this back in 2008 when I first jumped in to Serato and wanted to use it as a fx machine. I got it to work as a fx machine one time and couldn’t figure it out after that. So I sold it. Thank god Serato Integrated FX in their software.
I love the KP3 and I know I'm not alone. Why isn't there anything else like it available? The one negative I've noticed is that the touchscreen will freeze or just stop working.
I sure do like my Korg workstations the old Karma and the new Nautilus I can't believe how many pieces of gear they actually put out I'm always seeing new stuff that I didn't know about their very prolific company
I recently bought a used KP3 from Music Go Round, after selling back the heavy old bass amp/cabinet they sold me. (I’m clearly making lots of wise money decisions 😑) I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t done anything with it (it needs to be opened up for some serious knob cleaning and TLC). I’m not sure it’s worth learning/keeping when I can do similar in Koala on my iPad. 🎛 Besides trying to avoid Kaossilator and KP3+ tutorials, I’ve definitely noticed that KP3 videos are among the oldest content on RUclips. 😯
Kind of..But this has more effects..and the Kaossilator has more synth and keyboard sounds. And on this you can resample one bank on to the others..I dont think the Kaossilator lets you do that.
Happy new year! I never really understood the purpose of playing FX by touching a screen or moving your hands. I have a "Kaoss" functionnality on my Korg PA4X and I never use it. It reminds me when I had the "D Beam controller" on my Roland Juno-G. You can't really make somethng precise or even "musical", this is just for fun but after 5 minutes the fun has gone and you will never use the functionnality again...
Must disagree. I've used the FX extensively (playing with the XY pad) on recordings and live, since it largely simplifies otherwise highly intensive automation in a daw. As any instrument (which to me the KP3 is), there's a learning curve, where you have to spend hours practicing and playing with it, until you get the hang and can do really creative things.
That's kind of silly to say. It's not any different than using a keyboard's ribbon controller, Mod Wheel, Pitch bend, XY joystick, ADSR knob or even using a damper or sustain pedal? It's a feature that lets you expand your playing ability. The Kaoss PAD though was for DJ effects originally. Meaning you're going to be manipulating an entire song. You can throw in a filter, reverb, delay, echo, stutter, bit crush, phrase sample, live sample ADSR, adjust the pitch etc etc. To make a mix to get a club or party going. It's quite cool. In the studio though you can pretty much use it to flip your beat or samples you run into it. This is pretty much a "pre DAW" era product so you still needed devices like this to do those things. Now this stuff is built in to most keyboard and DJ gear and DAW software suits. Akai sure copied the hell out of it on their new standalone MPC's. But it's far from a 5 minutes of fun tool. It's a production tool that you have to learn how to use like everything else.
Happy New Year fam!..The kp3 is a different workflow. When I first got it I was so use to programming music that it felt kinda strange trying to arrange my beats on it..But when I got used to it I started making some crazy beats..The effects was so easy to apply that even some wack beats started sounding good lol.

I found this most useful along with the SP-12 where I could layer drums, a couple chops and a bassline on 4 tracks without running out of sample time.
