Great review, Andy! I just finished the Veiled Throne after binging the whole series too. This series absolutely does not get enough notice and I think it's a marketing problem partially- the first book (and the series itself) is SO unique and I think people are brought in by "Asian Game of Thrones" marketing and then DNF it because it's not that. It was so hard for me to review the second and third books because of just how much is going on. I had never honed in on your observation of him zooming in and out of time; I think that has a lot to do with how is able to accomplish so much. I love how sometimes he just totally switches things up, like doing a section from a Whale's perspective or Thoryo's first POV (to avoid spoilers, but you know what I mean). I now wait with baited breath for Speaking Bones...

Glad to see more love for this series! You did a fantastic job describing the style of storytelling Liu uses in this series and I think it's important to give people that expectation going in. When I first picked up tGoK in 2015, as a reader I was more used to the up-close-and-personal scenic storytelling of the modern fantasy genre so while I enjoyed the book it wasn't what I expected. Since then I've come to appreciate a broader variety of storytelling so when I picked up book two, The Wall of Storms, I was completely blown away. The series is truly unique and deserves more attention. Can't wait to read book 3 soon and then book 4 next year when it is released!

Thank you for this great review! I adored the first book of the series. I’m going to start the reading of the second book. But in France we don’t have yet the translation of the fourth book and I can’t read in english

You really summed up all the contradictions of this book that I felt. It's somehow an overview of the events while also being hyper focused. I found it so incredibly unique. I definitely plan on reading the rest of the series in 2022.

Wow! The last time took on a glowing recommendation from you I ended up reading Gardens of the Moon and it completely changed the way I think about the fantasy genre and storytelling as a whole. I haven’t looked back since as I’m currently halfway through the Bonehunters and my mind continues to be blown away with every installment. I will immediately prioritize this on my tbr and will be reading this very soon. Thanks for the recommendation!

This series needs more booktube love I really appreciate you making this video! Reading the first 2 between 2015-2017 and now on a reread of Grace of Kings/wall of storms, these are books that keep on giving and always deliver especially in the reread. The way Ken Liu moved from his variety of style and subjects in short fiction to epic fantasy, is like nothing else i had read before. It’s truly an engineers as wizards, appraisal of constitutional governance and revolution, taxation, leadership of egalitarian ideals vs nobility and heroism … and pure poetry the whole way. Now I’m really looking forward to my copy of The Veiled Throne, and Speaking Bones next year! Thanks for reviewing this!!

The Grace of Kings is like the best parts of epic poems (like The Illiad or The Aeneid) and classic fantasy.

Watched this to get into the right mood since I'm actually picking this book up as my next read (had it on my eReader already for a while, ever since Tammie and Lena started raving about it). Perfect motivation boost, thanx.

This sounds so good, ill definetly have to read it maybe next actually im between this, starting realm of the elderlings or giving wheel of time another go - the way you describe the storytelling seems very reminiscent of Orkneyinga Saga which i wrote my dissertation on so i think that might make this the front runner

@@AndySmithMN wow just came back to this video after finishing The Grace of Kings on your reccomendation and loving it! Didnt realise youd replied to my comment, sorry. The similarities to Orkneyinga Saga are definitely there in the style. I dont think im enough of an expert to be interviewed on them though. I only wrote it earlier this year as my undergraduate history dissertation rather than from a literary analysis perspective so don't think id have alot to contribute there. If you have any questions about the historical context or how accurate it might be i can try to answer those though :)
Not sure if youve read it yet but without spoiling either work for anyone when you get to the early 11th century chapters i think there are some real similarities between two major earls and kuni/mata.

I read this book about 3 years ago and was blown away. Was kinda disappointed to see the lukewarm reception it got from readers. But as you noted, Ken Lui's exposition dumps and quasi-historical storytelling style isn't for everyone, personally I loved it though. Reminded me a lot of another (under-appreciated) favourite author of mine, Guy Gavriel Kay.

I read the first one kinda early on in getting back into reading and while I really liked it, it didn't quite hit the high mark for me.... looking back now I'm kinda not sure why, I have the feeling that *when* I go back it's going to be an all time favorite. Definitely going to read it and then the rest of the series once the finale comes out next year.

Told you that you would love the series! Can recommend checking Ken Liu’s recent interview in Grimdark Magazine (mentioning inspiration from engineering, the Iliad, Wuxia, American Transcendentalism and Asian Philosophy) and the “Cool History Bros” channel here on YT, which has a nice, informative and easy to digest video playlist on the origin of the Qin and Han dynasties, which Liu used as a spine to evolve his story from, especially in this book: Both Kuni and Mata has direct inspiration from historical figures from those stories, but of course interesting changes, especially from “The Wall of Storms”.

@@AndySmithMN No, unfortunately that will have to wait to after my exams are finished, but will be on the top of my to do list when that is checked off. Without spoiling, which of the three books was your favorite?

I’ve been curious about reading this book! It sounds so good! Would you say there was any explicit violence? And if so is it easy to skip over? Thanks!

The way you describe Liu's use of time, going from hyper-focus to stretches of months or years summarised in a paragraph, reminds me of Frank Herbert's manipulation of time in his Dune series. Without reading Ken Liu's The Grace of Kings I can't say how similar they are, but I really liked the way it worked in Dune.

This series was recommended by another book tuber and I listened to the three books in 3 weeks. Awesome series and I can’t wait for the last book to come out. There is some unnecessary subplots at times, but still a great story with interesting characters.
