thanks Jeff just received my stencils from your website looking forward to making my first flag hope it turned out as nice as yours your love and passion for the American flag God bless your family and God bless America
Have you thought about the kits any more? I'll have to seen pictures of mine but I painted it with chalk paint and one on barn wood. But I'm excite to get my crafting place ready to work with a torch. I'm working hard all most there.
Mr Furr....great video and love your work! You may want it take a look at the medium sizing you posted....I get a union of 10.5 x 14.82. I took notes on your sizing and I believe you posted 10.5 x 13.
Yeah it should be what you posted for the medium Union. There is a free online calculator that if you put in any one number (like strip width at 1 1/2”), it will tell you all the correct dimensions.
Thank you Mr.Furr for all your info I really love your work my flags came out perfect and I owe it all to you thanks once again all the way from deep south Texas!!
I just saw your video and was exactly what I was looking for, great description about the dimensions and material. Thank you for provide this video, continue the hard work! 👍🏽
Jeff I just wanted to say Thank You again for putting out such videos that are packed full of information. I've been looking for awhile to find out what size the Stars/Union should be when making different size AMERICAN FLAGS and I should have just checked here first. Anyway thanks again..God Bless you and your family.
Yes. If would give the ones that would love to make one but may need a little experience so that feel secure about the next one . I have done a few this spring, but nothing like yours. I have the Dremel 3000 and a small touch so I'm ready to try. Do you send out complete instructions with photos when someone purchases your stencils? That's another way I would love to use also. Thank you for answering my question so promptly. Lorrie. ( keep up you great work it's very inspiring.)
can you make me a star stencil with the stars 7/8 in big? 50 star flag, the union would be 4in by 5 in, I just need the star stencil I plan on painting on the stars.
To be accurate the "fly" portion of the union on a flag that is 19.5"x37" should be 14.82". This can be calculated by using the information found at www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq3.html
Great project....Can you tell me the materials list....and do you use a table saw to rip the wavy strip from the 2 x 4 after cutting your first cut on the band saw....Thank you Kerry
On the large at the end of the measurements you said 19.5x48, just a heads up for anyone else that needs dimensions. You’re awesome, thank you so much!!
You say your first flags looked boxy bc of the union size, were you sizing it based on the government specs? I have been using that formula to do my flags and it is definitely a different look! I appreciate the videos! I watched a lot on these and I went with your design to base mine off of but like you said the process is always changing! I love the US flag but being from Texas i figured out real quick that lone star flags are a bit more popular here! Keep up the good work man and keep the videos coming! Can't wait to see that 8 footer!
Ok, well after ordering small/med/large to make my flags I found that none of them will work. I am using 1x2" furring strips from Lowes/HD for my first flag and the first 7 boards (Union) come to 9.5" wide. To big for the small, to small for the med templet. I have no way to cut down any bigger strips because my work shope is a 8x10 shed that also keep yard stuff in, so I do most of my work outside and I do not have a table saw. With that said, I am not a happy camper (my error not yours), but you might want to make a templet that will work for those of us that use the strips as they come from the store. Other then that I am well pleased with the quality and speed of getting them to me.
Sounds like your first flag is going to be the medium. I’m not sure why the furring strips aren’t consistent in width from the store but I’ll be glad to send you one that will work for what you have there. I have recently created a stencil just for this issue due to a few other people facing the same issues. Email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com so we can confirm your address and get it out to you.
Hoping I can get a response on here. I've tried you on Facebook a couple of times with different questions, but got no response. I've bought a few of your stencils, and noticed you have a "Jumbo" star stencil listed in your store. Do you have those dimensions for everything listed somewhere else? Any video of one? I'd love to see what it looks like! I might consider getting one of those off of you next. And would you mind sharing what brand the stencil material is? I think my cutter could handle it... Would like to try making a larger USMC stencil, some other military related, etc. Bit of advice for others to save hassles with trying to get the colored wood stain that Jeff uses.... Both Lowes & Home Depot sell the same stuff, however Lowes uses the color names that Jeff states. Home Depot goes by their given names from Minwax and has no clue about the names offered by Lowes. After a couple wasted trips and searching the internet and Minwax's website and calling them, it appears Lowes has just changed up the names of the colors. Also HD is almost $2 cheaper per can.
556 nomad you caught me at the right time. I apologize for the delay, I have actually recently hired someone to assist with all of the emails, comments and messages that I obviously haven't been able to keep up with. I don't have those listed anywhere but I am going to make a 4' x 8' flag really soon and put that build on my channel with the details. I'm also going to post a video with the details about the stain you mentioned, probably today or tomorrow as soon as the stain dries.
I really appreciate you breaking the numbers down like that, but as a visual learner I would have greatly benefited from seeing physical examples of all you were laying out in this video.
How do I go about ordering a union stars stencil? I need a medium size that is a proper fit for a 19 1/2" x 37" blank. I tried reaching out to you via your webpage but it wouldn't go through.
What is your website? I may order one of the bigger stencils. I have been making the 37" long ones but would like to do a biiger one for outside. Thanks for the videos!
So many numbers spouted off so quickly.....my ignorant brain can not comprehend, lol. Math is the worst for me but I so appreciate this video of explaining this. I'm making my 2nd flag ever and I feel like I'm struggling with accurate sizing for sure.
Sorry you’re struggling with it, if you have any questions let me know. I hope the video has been very helpful a long the way. Good luck with your flag projects
RebelRob34 Good afternoon! Here is a link where you can find the stencil you will need for this size flag. Please note the special instructions regarding the mark and move method. Let us know if you have any questions. thefurrminator.com/product/xl-standard-star-stencil/
Thanks for the helpful videos and tips. I have a question. What paint or stain do you use for your thin blue and thin red line flags? I watched the stain video but the thin red/blue lines looks to be different. Thanks
Jeff I'm making a flag I want the strips to be 1 3/4" for a total with of 22 3/4. What would the dimensions of the union need to be? What would the length of the flag be to look right? What size would the stars need to be? Do you have stencils for the size of the stars I could print out or order?
Carey Lewis I would make the flag 40" long to keep it from looking too square or boxy. After doing the math, here is what I came up with for the union Union 12.25" high 14.5" wide Stars 1.2" each I can make that stencil, email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com
Awesome, great video Jeff. ok so the stencils i got from you still works? I got the small, Med and Large. I'll have to get the extra large now :) Thank you.
Usually these strips are cut down to size at home. maybe the hardware store could rip them for you if you don't have a table saw. Firring strips typically come in 1" x 2" or 1" x 3". actual measurements are short of that so keep that in mind. i believe 1"x2" are actually 7/8" x 1 1/2".
Hello, I'm about to make a flag that's 6.5"×12". What do you think the best size of the union should be and do you custom make the unions? Thank you...Cheers!
Lorrie Cummings actually I have thought about that back early last year but due to time I haven't pursued that yet. Is that something that you would be interested in purchasing if I had it available? Just curious on your thoughts.
Perfectfitz thank you, I appreciate that. I do make and sell a few flags, I don’t make anything larger than the medium, 19.5 x 37 to ship though due to the cost of shipping the larger flags. What are you interested in?
The Furrminator I was interested in using it as a coffee table I am a pipe fitter so I can make the legs for it but I really like your work and I think it could be pretty cool as a coffee table
1 x 2 x 8-ft Furring Strip (Common); 0.75-in x 1.5-in x 8-ft (Actual) . Are these what you are speaking of or is it better to rip 1" X 6" X 8' into true 2 " strips? Thanks, Bob in Tampa
Landon Kaufman the finish that I use is an indoor outdoor Spar urethane, for the outdoor flags I apply two to three coats to the back and the front of the flags.
Hello Jeff, I am currently working on a wooden flag project and my dimensions are 2 1/2 by 48 inches for each of my strips across by 32 1/2 length. What will be the size for the union of the flag? Are you able to make a union of that size for me? I will be purchasing it from you if you can make it. Please tell me how much it would cost me. Thank you. JMC
Jeff --- I sent you an email to your gmail account about 4 days ago, and I haven't heard back from you yet. Would you please take a look at it, and let me know if you are able to help me out. Thanks. JMC
Great video. i just recently got into woodworking and have been looking for some projects. im going to order at least 2 of the stencils off your site. how long does it take for them to ship usually?
Jon Blake thank you for watching, sorry for the delay. I just saw your question. It normally takes 5-7 business days to prepare and ship due to the high number of orders we are getting now. I am currently on vacation but we return next week to fill all orders.
Thank u so much for going thru all the measurements! Im going to make one for my hubby! Thx and God Bless you and God Bless America!

Thank you for this information. I have hunted like crazy trying to find dimensions on different size flags. Trying to make a personal project.

What wood do you use? White pine furring strips?
oh I figured it out Furminator I just ordered one from you thank you!!!
To be accurate the "fly" portion of the union on a flag that is 19.5"x37" should be 14.82". This can be calculated by using the information found at www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq3.html

Jeremy Graves thank you, I appreciate that
What wood do you use for the 26x48 flag ? I bought the 2x2s but the width just ain’t working out right it keeps coming out to 19 1/2 x48
How do I go about ordering a union stars stencil? I need a medium size that is a proper fit for a 19 1/2" x 37" blank. I tried reaching out to you via your webpage but it wouldn't go through.
You didn’t answer me about the Flag Star Stencil I even contacted you on Twitter. Can you answer me please; thank You.
You gave large size26 x48 in the begging at the end you said 19 1/2x48 think you may have mixed up the med size
Yay I built one to it took me like half an hour or like 2 hours
What is your website? I may order one of the bigger stencils. I have been making the 37" long ones but would like to do a biiger one for outside. Thanks for the videos!
Im making 16x30 flags for my unit brothers what would be the dimension of the union?
So if I'm making a flag 48 inch by 24inch my union would need to be what size?
So many numbers spouted off so quickly.....my ignorant brain can not comprehend, lol. Math is the worst for me but I so appreciate this video of explaining this. I'm making my 2nd flag ever and I feel like I'm struggling with accurate sizing for sure.
Sorry you’re struggling with it, if you have any questions let me know. I hope the video has been very helpful a long the way. Good luck with your flag projects
How do you prevent the chance of the flag warping/cuffing ?
New project is a 72 inch long flag, do you know if they sell a stencil for this size?
RebelRob34 Good afternoon! Here is a link where you can find the stencil you will need for this size flag. Please note the special instructions regarding the mark and move method. Let us know if you have any questions.

How long does it take to receive one of your stencils?
Maybe you can help, I have two unions, one at 5”x7” and one at 7”x10”. What size flags would they be?
Thanks for the helpful videos and tips. I have a question. What paint or stain do you use for your thin blue and thin red line flags? I watched the stain video but the thin red/blue lines looks to be different. Thanks
I appreciate that thank you
Where can I order the star stencil from you?
I don't see where I can get the stencil for the stars...help..lol

Carey Lewis I would make the flag 40" long to keep it from looking too square or boxy. After doing the math, here is what I came up with for the union Union
12.25" high
14.5" wide
Stars 1.2" each
I can make that stencil, email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com
Awesome, great video Jeff. ok so the stencils i got from you still works? I got the small, Med and Large. I'll have to get the extra large now :) Thank you.
I'm having trouble finding furring strips for the small flag. For some reason I can't find the 1" strips.
Thank you!
How much do you charge for your flags?
Do you make hidden gun safe American flags ? If so do you have plans ? Thank you
Troy Benson I haven't made any hidden compartment flags yet and I don't have plans, I hope to do that soon
Thank you
There's a flag dimension calculator online
hey Jeff I would like to order some stencils but I do not have your website
Craig Thomas ok, it is www.thefurrminator.com
Your website is down!!
Hello,
I'm about to make a flag that's 6.5"×12". What do you think the best size of the union should be and do you custom make the unions? Thank you...Cheers!
Have you thought of selling a whole kit (small) to let people have a practice kit plus the measurements and the stencils.
Lorrie Cummings actually I have thought about that back early last year but due to time I haven't pursued that yet. Is that something that you would be interested in purchasing if I had it available? Just curious on your thoughts.
Jeff Furr I would be VERY INTERESTED!!!
I'd for sure purchase a kit like this.
.
where do you get the furring strips in different widths that you use? All the stores I have researched only show 1.5 inch widths.
I have been able to find them at Lowes and Home Depot
Hey buddy great videos love your work would love to make one but as I live in the city it's hard to maneuver do you make and sell custom flags ?
Perfectfitz thank you, I appreciate that. I do make and sell a few flags, I don’t make anything larger than the medium, 19.5 x 37 to ship though due to the cost of shipping the larger flags. What are you interested in?
The Furrminator I was interested in using it as a coffee table I am a pipe fitter so I can make the legs for it but I really like your work and I think it could be pretty cool as a coffee table
Hey Jeff been following your vids for a while great info and great flags just 1 question what do you sell your flags for for each size thanks
Tony O email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com for detaims
1 x 2 x 8-ft Furring Strip (Common); 0.75-in x 1.5-in x 8-ft (Actual) . Are these what you are speaking of or is it better to rip 1" X 6" X 8' into true 2 " strips? Thanks, Bob in Tampa
To get a better quality board, rip your own 1.5” strips but the furring strips do work good. 1.5” wide is the size you need
How do you weatherproof them or don't you? A 3'x6' flag I imagine someone will hang outside
Landon Kaufman the finish that I use is an indoor outdoor Spar urethane, for the outdoor flags I apply two to three coats to the back and the front of the flags.
Here is the link to the video I added about the finish
ruclips.net/video/PyMcVjj1EWc/видео.html
Great info. Much appreciated. What's the cost per size?
Rod7355 thank you, glad to help. Are you meaning the cost to make the flag or what I charge for a flag?
Hello Jeff, I am currently working on a wooden flag project and my dimensions are 2 1/2 by 48 inches for each of my strips across by 32 1/2 length. What will be the size for the union of the flag? Are you able to make a union of that size for me? I will be purchasing it from you if you can make it. Please tell me how much it would cost me. Thank you. JMC
Email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com and I can discuss this with you, not sure I understand the size you’re making.
Jeff --- I sent you an email to your gmail account about 4 days ago, and I haven't heard back from you yet. Would you please take a look at it, and let me know if you are able to help me out. Thanks. JMC
where do I find your website? Can't remember how i found it before?
Great video. i just recently got into woodworking and have been looking for some projects. im going to order at least 2 of the stencils off your site. how long does it take for them to ship usually?
Jon Blake thank you for watching, sorry for the delay. I just saw your question. It normally takes 5-7 business days to prepare and ship due to the high number of orders we are getting now. I am currently on vacation but we return next week to fill all orders.
