Why the Beechcraft Premier is Excellent

  • In 2006, Hawker Beechcraft introduced the Premier 1A to near-universal acclaim: a composite-fuselage light jet that could be flown single-pilot at speeds up to 450 knots with a range of nearly 1,500 nautical miles, to compete with the Cessna Citation Jet series of aircraft, in comparison, the original Cessna Citation looked like a lawn tractor next to the premiere and was slower to boot. From the beginning, Beech’s concept was to create the most comfortable single-pilot-certified airplane in its class, and it succeeded

Having worked maintenance on this plane on several occassions now, the maintenance is by far the really troublesome part.
By far the biggest issue this plane seems to have is bad Corrosion prevention. I had to remove a wing tip a while ago and had like 6 screws that completely corroded into the Nutplates, there also were many corrosion spots hidden behind the wing tip on structural parts of the outer most wing frame.
On a different occasion we actually needed to take the entire plane apart to a point where it could be shipped off to the factory in crates. The entire Vertical Stabilizer Root was corroded heavily and the plane needed basically an entirely new tail because of that. We also needed two technicians to strike a flap roller bolt out with a mallet to remove the flap, said procedure went on for two hours until the bolt finally gave in.
Third times the charm and on that plane, one of the handful of aluminium stiffeners around the composite fuselage was corroded. The entire Wing assembly was lowered off and out of the way to replace said stiffener.......... only to realize that we cant replace the stiffener because it wasnt just riveted but also glued into place, thus risking damage to the composite pressure cabin.
Finally for the last hurrah as someone else mentioned, its getting extremely difficult to source up replacement parts, and this is me saying it despite me working for the company that built that plane (take a guess which company).
I dislike seeing them at work mostly tho because they are incredibly frustrating to work on as little attention was paid on the maintenance staff actually being able to access aircraft systems or replace important parts.

I also first saw the Beech/Hawker Premier 1A on Greg’s P1D youtube channel. There’s a relatively young P1A type rated channel out there who does a more critical review of the Premier 1A in terms of its layout and avionics. Noteworthy were his criticisms of the original ProLine avionics. When compared to modern equivalents from Garmin, they are much heavier, taking up almost 1/2 of the starboard nose. He also found that the pre-flight procedures take longer than other aircraft in the class. He said that approach plates can take a long time to load, like 40 minutes or more and that the processing power of the early 2000’s ProLine is but a fraction of the latest available glass from Collins and/or Garmin. Also no externally serviceable potty and no thrust reverse capabilities. The Positives: Taller and Wider than average cabin; Better than average Useful Load; Solid feel and predictable maneuvering/stall character. High Speed, Good Time to Climb and Ceiling of FL41. Bottom Line: A single pilot, Mach .8 jet with Williams engines and Textron/Beech support, I doubt one could find a more economical executive jet for flights under 1,000nm.

Engine TBO is 5,000 hours if they’re on warranty programs. The Premier is a fantastic airplane that is plagued by parts and support issues. Amazing cabin, great maintenance schedule, strong and lightweight, and goes way faster than anything else in its class. There are some high dollar hard to find parts these days, but overall it’s a great airplane. I wish Cessna/Textron didn’t kill it when they bought Beech. Flew and managed one for 13 years.

I own a Premier and I fully subscribe to your comme. However, the parts issue you can also see with many business aircrafts in production. When I did my research, this was not a factor for me anymore. But it is true that spar parts are sometimes an issue like with many other business aircrafts in production.

I've owned a Premier for 6 years and have no parts or support issues. I hear this all of the time, especially from Citation people who are trying to justify paying double for smaller cabins and lower speeds. I am very happy with my Premier and would not trade it for any other light jet. The legs are my only complaint but for the acquisition price, operating cost, cabin size and speed, it simply has no peers.

Ditto to positive comments on the Premier. Awesome light jet ; fastest single-pilot jet in the world, a near standup cabin (match that CJ, Phenom or Honda!). The only deficiencies are its (only a very rudimentary) lavatory - and more importantly, its payload vs range performance. Max IFR range of 1,500 nm but if you want to go with 6 pax over 900 nm, forget it. The P2 made this and other excellent improvements but sadly, Bernie Madoff and Lehman Brothers killed the bizjet market for years and killed Beech's P2 and bankrupted Beech itself forcing it to be gobbled up by its arch-competitor - who woulda thunk it ?!
