One of the nicest performances of the Haydn I've ever heard. It's usually played on an E flat so maybe a little extra credit for using a B flat. Full rich high notes. Perfect technique and tone throughout the range. Beautiful expression and musicianship. I think I only heard two chipped notes in the Haydn, but that's OK. In one of Adolph Herseth's performances of it, he chipped a note. Very nice work by the accompanist, too.
You might notice that during the long introduction there are three places he plays. Most performers don't bother with that and start after the introduction is over. One is a long tone. Then there are two "calls" (like a hunting horn call). This piece was written for a keyed trumpet and, I think, the first piece so written. People had only heard natural trumpets until then. I think Haydn put those elements during the introduction as part of leading the listener from the idea of the natural trumpet, which was not considered a good solo instrument, to a trumpet that could play a chromatic. The long tone and the "calls" would sound familiar to people. But shortly into the concerto there is part of a diatonic scale, and then a descending chromatic. Nobody would have heard such a thing until this.
