These sorts of reels always feel like they’re for camera operators. If I was looking for an editor I want to see sequences, interviews and how they put narrative sequences together. Depends what sort of work/genre you’re after I guess? This is more like a slideshow. A very cool slideshow.
Love the profile pic, or should I say it's "Excellent!" ;)
This was my thought. How is it going to convey the editor's style or sense of pacing when the sequence selects have been Frankensteined into a music video...
Reel itself could be a narrative, that's why i'm on this video, because the great shots by itself could be good, but with narrative it'll be great.
Making my reel rn... my professors have said reels for an editor is just a box to check and that it shows nothing about the editor. so I agree with you bc its kinda hard to tell what someone can do as an editor from clips...
Kinda tough when you don't have all this cool footage to work with
Relatable
There's actually some pretty good free stock footage nowadays! Pixabay is one and RUclips even has some.
Once again, uniquely you. I about to make one, and I bet I could find a way to make it feel pretty indie and still engaging. This one was pretty dramatic with flashy shots and flashy music. If you have a lot of smiling faces as your hero shots for your previous projects for example, it will be a much video. excited!
I have this problem as well because I've worked for the same company for 4 years just editing youtube videos. I'm going to have to use a lot of stock footage!
You can get stock footage to work on for free or paid websites

Were any of those edited?
you should have edited this comment
you should have edited this person

asshole lol
"Editing reels should be edited." couldn't have said it better 😂😂
Wrong! If I have to hire an editor, I wanna see a showcase of his/her work. And not a trailer of flashy cuts. That's way too easy.

Best Editing Reel advice I've ever gotten, seriously. Its good to know I can edit my edits.
You know you did good when you can watch your own stuff over and over and still get amped about it.
Thanks for the advice! I just finished an awesome internship at a post-production company so I wanted to make a reel and look for my first full time job. I can't wait to go through all the best shots I'm most proud of to showcase them in the best way i can.
I know this is an old vid I am sooo into this channel. I am not an editor at all but your vids have sparked something in me that truly enjoys editing and I just wanted to say thank you!!!
Out of all the videos I watched as I'm trying to learn video editing, this by far is the best one, and it made me have a clear vision of what I should be doing. Thank you so much.
Great video, and important stuff for folks to consider. Thanks for putting it out there. My only "big-picture" comment for folks to consider is: edit for the job you WANT. Think about the people who will be looking at your reel, and what they'd most likely be looking for, and take that into consideration. If you want to be doing exactly what you're doing now, then bully for you, edit a sweet reel that speaks exactly to what you've been doing... but if you want to move into some new/different style of work, look at this as an opportunity to edit your reel in a way that would speak to the people who make the hiring choices in that field. And another way to get a feeling for what works in that new field, look around at other people already doing what you want to do. Don't steal or copy. Seriously. Don't do it. But listen to their music choices, their cutting, timing, color, effects, etc... and keep all that in mind when doing your edit.
^^ This is great advice
Thanks homey! 👊
Great advise .. I watch S/V Delos & others on how they film an edit their life. All you guys are in my head when I film something, ya move ,don't move /cut/ edit /breath / shortcut keys man hard to keep up..
The most productive video i've seen in a while. Great tips man. Thank you!
Reel is super dope man. Been here since under 1000 subs and the channel grown is well deserved man. You break down stuff in a fun and cool way that makes us say “oh. That wasn’t as hard as I thought” lol
Thanks dude!! Good to have you part of the OG family :)
Holy shit, Ernest here?
Hey man, thanks for this advice! Really appreciate you put the time and love to make this! Helpful for a bunch of us! Cheers!
Thanks for this video, I made an editing reel recently and it felt like I was doing something wrong. Good to know that people look for good editing within in the reel itself. This was super helpful
your reel was vivid and very dynamic, never a boring moment!
The best video on how to make a showreel... Thank you for all the advices and also providing an example at the very beginning...
I didn't know something like a "editing reel" existed but now with your eg I loved it thanks!❤
You're very clear in your videos by the way.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!

This is so good, I loved your reel and it's really inspiring. I'm a film major graduating soon and I hope to one day have a reel like that- for even my own personal satisfaction. So incredible, you're clearly so talented. Great job
Amazing content once again. It's a great thing that you give us (newbies) important piece of information and tips right from the source! Thank you Ian! Happy holidays!
Kick-ass demo reel! Short, dynamic and it's over in a minute or so. As suggested below, you can always add links at the end of that demo reel to get prospective employers to view longer clips you're proud of and that relate to the job you're applying for.
How coincidental that I was looking for tips on making a reel and I come across this...which is exactly uploaded 2 years ago! Great tip!!! I'll be using this on my reel :D
PS: It's Dec 24 already in the Philippines. :D

Super cool 😎 reel your the man 💪💪💪 you gained another die hard fan💯
Great editing!!! Thanks for the inspiration!
that reel had me movin'!
Is there a general runtime we should aim for? Your reel was over 2 mins long... For some reason, I had the notion that our reels should be a bit shorter. Does that matter?
Thank you so much for the tips and inspiration.
This video helped me a lot!
And it motivated me to create my own Reel!!
Great video!!!!
Well that was just an epic showreel, very interesting to watch the whole way through
Thank you so much, this was really helpful and informative!
Very helpful! Thank you so much!!
Thank u :D hopefully I can show you mine soon
Cool...Honestly didn't know if it would keep my attention but it was really good!!!
Thank you for the Advice man!
My opinion in the last few years has been that showreels for editors are perhaps good for piquing an employer's interest in you, but does really nothing to show them if you can edit the type of content they're looking to hire an editor for. Maybe from reels like this I can glimmer that you'd be good at sizzle reels? If you're a DoP, or some other position that doesn't pin all of its worth so heavily on your ability to construct a story, this would be a perfect reel.
So another point I think that should have been included is to provide links to the full pieces as well when applying. So they can see the actual editing. In my view, if someone is seriously interested in hiring an editor, they'll take the time to sit down and watch at least one of the MVs/films/shorts/TVC/Sizzles/ etc that were created.
This is good for specific commercial jobs that are churning out internet content on a regular basis, like buzzfeed, vice, etc. I'm assuming you'd send links to actual pieces if you were looking for narrative work.
Dude, that was dope!
Honestly I Loved It MAAN !!
that was DOPE i working on mine now!
I might have to watch this again but the one thing I didn't hear mentioned was how long the reel should be. I think your reel is the perfect length-2 minutes. This is an important point to address because it's possible many aspiring editors don't have enough work in the can to construct a compelling reel.
Choice of music is also very important... and whatever music you choose, make sure to cut to the music to lock in the tempo of your edit. Failing to adhere to this simple tenet will create a discordant effect, which can render your reel less pleasing to watch.
OK, so I'm actually editing my reply from a year ago. What I've learned (while learning to edit) is that many recruiters don't even watch reels with the sound
up. So, you might fret over finding the perfect music track when it's most likely the least important element. Far more important is the quality of the edit,
and since I am also looking to get into sound design I don't add music to my reel unless it's already a bed for part of a scene. Best advice I got, cut the reel for the job you're trying to get and keep it to a minute, no longer than 90 seconds. Especially in NY, depending on the house and the industry they serve, sometimes you have to wear more than one hat, so it's often necessary to showcase editing ability, sound design chops, and some basic motion graphics.
Hey, this is great. Thanks for the tips!
This was extremely helpful!!!
Great info! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the good tips. I am going to finish my edit and tag you on it so you can see it.
Brilliant
You are super dope Loved it
Hi, thanks for the tips. I’m starting to make a showreel but just wondering if you edit your original footage for your showreel or do you cut the best parts from your exported videos? I’m concerned about loss of quality and how to go about re-colour grading doing it the latter way. Thanks.
That was a great reel!!!
Your reel is dope
Amazing reel!!!!!
Watching this made me feel so .....small lol. Always viewed you as a friend who taught me cool shit every time. Watching this is like watching a professional person who is wayyyyyyy more talented than I am. I aspire to at least reach this level of talent.
love love this..
Great tips! Thanks!
Slick vid, and great info. 🤙🏼
Love it!!!
wow. you're crazy talented .
Dude that was awesome
Thank you for throwing a good stuff
Thanks for all of your insight! Really well done. Just curious, do you need all of your own project footage to make an editing reel or can you take footage from anywhere and make the edit and story your own using your own music, transitions, effects and graphics as long as you give credit to whoever shot the actual video?
It was insane 💪💪💪💪💪
wtf I randomly saw the place I live from Copenhagen at the beginning of your reel.. hahaha, that's so cool!
daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn that reel was fiiiiiiireeeee
