This was in the middle of Brian's "manly" singing period in which he set out to destroy whatever remained of his once-angelic voice that cigarettes and coke hadn't already taken their toll on.
@@BlueEyes-gp8lg I doubt this kind of singing was really a culprit in and of itself but what do I know. Usually singers with technique can distort their voice without damage, although who knows what damage a touring schedule could inflict.
The technical quality of the recording aside, this is a fabulous capture of the 1970s road show. No question they were better in the early 70s and were more mechanical by this time, but they were still one of the best live shows around. Interesting to me is how animated Brian was in this show. Damn near 4 minute flute solo on Feel Flows. Fascinating concert and lots of songs I haven't seen live before. California Saga one of my favorites. Airplane and Love is a Woman. Good stuff.
Another incredible part of seeing this as my first Beach Boy tour experience at the ripe old age of 13 was the presence of Charles Lloyd on stage as a touring member of the band. He is highlighted at 1:07:00 when the band does ‘Feel Flows’. I knew I was hearing something special but it would take me a few years to realize just how lucky I was to see this man as part of the tour that year. If I had to choose an era or year to see them, I always say I would have loved to have been able to see them in 1971 or 1972 touring with Blondie and Rickie. Still pretty damn lucky to have seen them on this tour to began my journey of Wilson Brother Shows over the years. I thank the heavens for all of the wonderful live music I have been fortunate to have heard over the years. I was truly fortunate to begin that journey with this tour. Wilson Brothers have made the world a more beautiful place with their gifts of music.
I'm 26 now. You have no idea how much I envy you to have been able to be at one of these lesser known Beach Boys concerts. I've watched so many of their concerts on RUclips, and I've been lucky enough to see Brian and Al and Blondie Chaplin in person in 2018. I agree with what you said. Brian is a survivor. I've read all his biographies, so I really understand what that statement entails.
I’d give an enormous amount of credit for the show not plunging fair off the rails into a flaming wreck to Dennis ( who appears to look quite concerned throughout proceedings ), Bill Hinsche, and Al…not to mention the brass and percussion players who turned up to play neither drunk nor stoned..
My third concert I ever went to. 13 years old. Unforgettable and the first of many seeing The Beach Boys. I always thought I would replace one of them as a singer. Very inspirational to me as a young person. I had a few amazing experiences at the Washington monument at 4 th of July concerts also. God Bless the talents! Memories are plentiful! ❤️🙏🇺🇸
I attended this show. It was a makeup date from a show that was canceled the previous August... they had three shows scheduled but only played two of them.
"C-Man writes: "This show has been making the rounds on video for a few years. This was evidently the day after Jimmy Carter's inaugaration in nearby Washington D.C. Brian and Dennis were both a little "out of it" at this show. Brian shouted (rather than sang) his leads, and played bass on BACK HOME and SURFER GIRL. The next day, Mike Love supposedly flew to Switzerland for six months of TM training.""
This concert bought back some good memories of seeing all the beach boys at knebworth and again at margate last june, minus some great names. God bless the beach boys and the members of the group no longer with us. The music will last forever .
Just my opinion, possibly their greatest on stage lineup-the 1977 to 1980 era. The Father, The Son, The Holy Ghost, all 3 in FINE form here. Brian at the tail end of his ‘second creative period’ in full battle, slaying his personal demons, confident, happy and SMiLE-ing on stage. FANTASTIC song lineup. Despite the mountain of off stage issues threatening to tear this band apart during this time, their MONSTROUS talent and far reaching, soul soothing body of work drowns out the noise and makes the world a happier place for a few hours here. Watching and listening to Brian happily plinking out the ‘Boogie Woogie’ on the piano is reason enough to love this show. Thanks for uploading:)
I don't know if Brian and the the boys were in fine shape.. Maybe for this show but that was a rough yr for all of em drug wise... Brian doesn't look in the best shape either
@@DummyYEEEAAHHHHH I agree with you, I’ll try and clarify a bit here. My enthusiasm for the “real” Beach Boys (and yes, I include, when present, both Bruce Johnston and David Marks when I say “real”), gets the best of me. You’re right in your assessments. The 1976-81 time period imo, was the most difficult trying period in the band’s’ history. Not the preceding years where Brian basically checked out and stayed in bed, and not the ‘81-present “never ending lawsuit” period which sees Brian finally finding his true self, settling into a comfort zone and reclaiming his life, as well as the fragmentation of the band into separate yet sometimes fluid camps, not to mention the tragic 1983 death of brother Dennis. The 1976-81 period is at once desperately hopeful and hopelessly sinister in it’s vision and scope; Brian is scooped up out bed and thrust into intensive therapy with some seeking to save his life while others were no doubt trying to save ‘The Band’. The plus side of this is, Brian’s life was indeed ‘saved’ and he created some wonderful music during this time, including the mostly misunderstood masterpiece ‘The Beach Boys Love You’. The down side was Brian was unwillingly thrust to the forefront of the ill fated “Brian’s Back” campaign, something he was clearly not ready for nor comfortable with. He was being manipulated. Witness the 7-4-80 (NOT ‘81), The 7-4-80 Washington DC show. IMO, their greatest ever live concert with ALL (excluding D Marks) of the ‘Brothers, Cousins and Friends’ onstage together performing a killer set in front of 500,000 ravenous fans. Brian doesn’t seem too ‘thrilled’ to be there. In fact, in some of the camera angles, if you look closely across the stage from Brian, hanging high in the stage rafters out of view of the massive crowd but clearly in Brian’s sightline.., you’ll see a plain white sign that reads ‘DON’T PANIC’. Throughout the show you can also catch glimpses of Al Jardine looking nervously cautious at Brian..., once or twice he even catches Brian’s eye and just barely off mic asks Brian “Are you ok?”, “You alright?” Long story short.., more often than not, during the ‘76-‘81 period you’ll see Brian onstage staring at his feet, ignoring the audience, not even pretending to play. So when I said ‘Fine form’ I should have also said “on a sliding scale”. During that period “3” out of the original “5” (or 6) onstage were either drunk, full on ‘wet’ alcoholic’s, druggies, hard drug users, not “well” with major psychological illness..., any combination. Yet THIS show, well everything seems alright or at least “ok”. Brian ‘seems’ happy to be there.., and if THEY were able to escape the real life horror show that their lives had become, for 2 short hours, JUST through their love for the wonderful music that they were putting across to those fans on that night..., I’ll take that 2 hour escape as well. Because I LOVE ‘my boys’ and the ability of their music to allow me to escape reality once in a while. Nothing beats sitting on the east coast while my head visits ‘The Girls on the Beach’ in California, or safely contemplating the meaning of my life un’Til I Die’ from ‘In My Room’. ☺️Sorry Lol, long answer..., you’re right, but I’ll take the good that did wind up shaking itself free from those bad times and keep it close to my soul.
@@michaelr4063 I think Rolling Stone named The Beach Boys 'best live band' over The Grateful Deadin the early 70s, when Ricky and Blondie were in the band.
@@MIKELIN8 You’re correct, I recall reading/hearing the exact same thing. I don’t deny the talent and the fantastic sounds that the Ricky/Blondie era Beach Boys made. By the mid-late 70’s ‘that’ band and their more inventive approach was gone, as the Boys revamped their live sets towards a ‘greatest hits’ approach, and as uninspiring as that sounds.., “that’s” the live band (76-81) that I like best. Bottom line, to my ears, they just sounded more confident as opposed to sheepishly introducing and explaining each ‘new’ song during the Ricky/Blondie era (which were all songs powerful enough to proudly present without the ‘apologies’. OMG, THE TRADER!!). My first memories of hearing ‘then current’ live Beach Boys are from that era..., so that’s a warm fuzzy childhood feeling cop-out. But consider this.., July 4th, 1980.., in front of 500,000 people: Did they ever get closer to the Spector “wall of sound” that Brian was so awestruck by, live, on stage, than they did ‘that’ day with ‘that’ band?
@@michaelr4063 , gritty, grainy, dirty, warts and all. They were real musicians and rock stars living the life with all the politics, problems, psychological and drug problems and family issues. To see them pulling together onstage, brothers in arms and brothers in blood was heartening and heart-warming. It’s why we love them.
Feel it's a complete travesty that Carl doesn't play the guitar solo in Feel Flows, as well. One of the greatest ever guitar solos in Beach Boys history. Probably the best.
What a circus the group was at that time. Carl and Brian had worse demons than Dennis at the time. The only good part was Love was terrified of Dennis who looked like he wanted to kill him.
This is cool to see; thank you 🙏🏼 Still vital & creating new, interesting music; yet to become a nostalgia act. I dig how the setlist is a mix of stuff from the early days up to the present.
OMG, Thanks a million to the poster! With Dennis AND Brian!!! They still had it for sure! A serious historic show! I love Brians 'Honky tonk" interludes, Who knew??? Thanks again from an old fan!
I could be imagining things because of the quality and color of the video but in fun fun fun I swear it looks like Dennis has a bloody nose and he even points to it at one point. Am I the only one seeing this or am I crazy? 😅
Was at this show. First time seeing them but honestly a little disappointed because they weren’t as tight as I thought they would be. Seemed like they were somewhat going through the motions at times.
Any show The Beach Boys perform Feel Flows is an amazing show. While they certainly were in the beginning of their nostalgia “jukebox” period, they didn’t totally abandon those progressive deep cuts yet.
I saw the BBs a couple of times in the 60s...and then many times in following decades. If you missed them in the 60s, then you didn't get to know how good just the 5 of them were and how disciplined their performances were. This is just a 70s gig.
"Just a 70s gig?" "Disciplined" is the ultimate? Live music is the ultimate. On January 21, 1977 the Beach Boys shared 2:17 with the audience. Aren't you glad? I am.
Group was a mess in the late seventies with drugs and drink but put together some great performances. Saw them in Philly 1976 with about a million other people before they jetted to DC to play before 500000 on same day! Knebworth England June 1980 was fabulous and capped the seventies for the ‘Boys!
@@noahnewhouse7795 - Of course. Personally I don't count him as a member of The Beach Boys, one of The Nine Heroes, which is who I meant by "All heroes, no villains!" :-)
Clearly these were the 70s in almost all of the ways chemically possible, lol probably ludes, coke and herb and drinks, I know this was the band and Brian's biggest cocaine period, I mean '77 was a peak year for the ''Cocaoinea'' if there ever was one one, between the LA snow blizzard and NY flurries with Studio 54 etc. Salad days indeed. Glad Brian got clean and healthy and such a shame Dennis would drown during drinking heavily (I think they called it a shallow water blackout as he was trying to look for things on the dock that his ex had thrown or dropped into the water) and then with Carl passing in 1998 from lung cancer, fuck, those guys should still be around. Love and Long Live Rock N Roll and LIVE music and the magic memory making music of The Beach Boys.
Carl had a great studio voice. Here it's a little patchy but it could be due to a number of things. I've always liked "Feel Flows". There's a number of cover versions here on YT, some are pretty remarkable, also.
Carl had a great voice period, studio or not. He is not in top form here. There was a reception for the group before this concert. Alcohol was served, and Carl overindulged.
Any chance of footage of the Allman Brothers Dec 6th or so in ‘73? The very first concert after opening the day before. That concert literally changed my life. I left there that night knowing what I wanted to do the rest of my life.

Your age & experience mirrors my own. Damn were lucky looking back.😊
Just found this...I was at this show...still have the program and stub. Damn.
A good point!
how do you know they weren't ???? that's the biggest assumption I've ever seen.
Thanks for this - grainy but a real representation of the 70’s concerts.
Al Jardine is absolutely brilliant!!!!!! A saving performance, sir
Brian looks so happy in the thumbnail
Had tickets for that show, something came up did not make it. Never forgave myself.
Forgive yourself, that something must of been super important!
I will say that Mike Love does seem quite complementary of Brian Wilson and others in the band
Because Mike appreciates everyone else in the group, especially Brian. I don't think that's surprising.
@@runnersdialzero1244 yeah it's not really what it seems right? ;-)
Of course. He's a good lad!
:-)
Because Mike is nothing without Brian. he doesn't appreciate anything but his financial bottom line.
@@Mozart1220 riiiiiiiiiight cha ching!!! ;-)
This concert bought back some good memories of seeing all the beach boys at knebworth and again at margate last june, minus some great names. God bless the beach boys and the members of the group no longer with us. The music will last forever .
So cool to hear "Love is a Woman" live before it came out on their next album, Love You. 56:12
Dennis' "......thats interesting...."
@@TEM14411 pretty cool intro haha

I'm no fan of Mike, but if it hadn't been for him and Al, that would have been a complete disaster.
nice to see the late, great Billy Hinsche!
100%. Great musician.
やっぱりオリジナルメンバーのライブはいい、よくまとまってる、この頃のライブが一番決まってる
brian sounds cool on sloop john b, he was definetly going for a cool americana randy newman/country kind of low and powerful voice
omg hi Kyle haha
Feel it's a complete travesty that Carl doesn't play the guitar solo in Feel Flows, as well. One of the greatest ever guitar solos in Beach Boys history. Probably the best.
What a circus the group was at that time. Carl and Brian had worse demons than Dennis at the time. The only good part was Love was terrified of Dennis who looked like he wanted to kill him.
the punk version of Sloop John B!
Wow! Mike Love has moves like Jagger. Awesome! Thanks for posting. 👍
Ah Sean , the Show with the 48 Minute version of Feel Flows ;-)
"Thank you, Ccchhhaaarrrllleeesssssss"...
The version of feel flows here is amazing. Charles Lloyd is a marvelous flautist and jazz musician
I'd imagine many in the audience were wondering who are all those other dudes up there??
The blokes who aren’t drunk or stoned ?
Great setlist
This is cool to see; thank you 🙏🏼 Still vital & creating new, interesting music; yet to become a nostalgia act. I dig how the setlist is a mix of stuff from the early days up to the present.
Dennis: God____. God bless you-----lots of explaining to do big guy!!!
Had the pleasure of photographing this show and the 2nd performance as well.
Brian is so cray in this one.
OMG, Thanks a million to the poster! With Dennis AND Brian!!! They still had it for sure! A serious historic show! I love Brians 'Honky tonk" interludes, Who knew??? Thanks again from an old fan!
Sean, Thank you for the rare footage ,. I love seeing the Greats ''
I could be imagining things because of the quality and color of the video but in fun fun fun I swear it looks like Dennis has a bloody nose and he even points to it at one point. Am I the only one seeing this or am I crazy? 😅
Poor Brian tried. It’s sad though
Pet Sounds 2016 best concert I’ve ever seen. Redemption.
I love how Brian sings "The clouds in the sky ..caress my BUTT so tenderly"....funny guy....
around 32:50
"my butt shines down on the great big beautiful sea".....lol....lol
I do believe that grass grows faster than the tempo of "Feel Flows" at this show.
😱. I almost pulled my hair out & shut the tablet. But it’s a CARL song, so I couldnt
Was at this show. First time seeing them but honestly a little disappointed because they weren’t as tight as I thought they would be. Seemed like they were somewhat going through the motions at times.
Yeah they’re all in pretty bad shape. Brian’s obviously stoned on something, Carl’s drunk and the sound guy is nowhere to be found.
It was during that rough patch, it's a miracle they were able to do this on a constant basis for the time they did
Sean, thank you for posting this concert. It’s perfect!
Any show The Beach Boys perform Feel Flows is an amazing show.
While they certainly were in the beginning of their nostalgia “jukebox” period, they didn’t totally abandon those progressive deep cuts yet.
Too true.

Thanks for this concert. Really appreciated it. Charles lloyd sure had some groovy moves during gv. Haha. Americas greatest band.
Poor, poor Dennis.
I was at this show. I remember Brian smoking cigarettes and letting the ashes drop onto the piano. He looked like he was in a stupor.
I am.
This really looks like a show taped from Australia the same year.
Omg Brian sounds fantastic!!
Brian is back!
Apparently, too soon.
57:08 I love “Love is a Woman,” idk why, it’s just so beautiful
Group was a mess in the late seventies with drugs and drink but put together some great performances. Saw them in Philly 1976 with about a million other people before they jetted to DC to play before 500000 on same day! Knebworth England June 1980 was fabulous and capped the seventies for the ‘Boys!
That was July 4th 1985. Played Live Aid @ JFK stadium 11 days later.
Thank you for showing this...just love watching the older performances!!!
Brian is very pissed.

Landy, Murry, Manson and yes, Mike. All part of The Beach Boys thunder dome, all villains.
You're not wrong, sad indeed.
I know it's a piece of history, but it's a little disturbing to see them like this.
Yep...

At 1:20:15, Carl looks into the camera with a very weary look and shakes his head; I am imagining he's expressing his sadness at the performance.
No doubt....😂
Very rough, but very real.
I believe he's indicating to the cameraman that he wants him to focus on Mike and Al, and not him.

I wish I had been there. It is awesome.
Interesting vocal approach by Brian on Sloop but it works
Carl had a great studio voice. Here it's a little patchy but it could be due to a number of things. I've always liked "Feel Flows". There's a number of cover versions here on YT, some are pretty remarkable, also.
Carl had a great voice period, studio or not. He is not in top form here. There was a reception for the group before this concert. Alcohol was served, and Carl overindulged.
Any chance of footage of the Allman Brothers Dec 6th or so in ‘73? The very first concert after opening the day before. That concert literally changed my life. I left there that night knowing what I wanted to do the rest of my life.
Brian estaba endemoniado en este show 🎸
This is not in Washington DC it was in Largo, Maryland.
actually the cap center was in landover maryland. i used to go to caps hockey games there before they moved to dc. it is a suburb outside of dc LOL
Whenever I see Mike Love on stage, I think he's lost his way and ended up on stage with a different band.
1:25:25 Brian botches the lyrics on Surfer Girl.
He botched the entire show but it’s still great!!
It’s just unfair to the audience to go on stage f*** ed up like that
