20 Years Peaceful Revolution - Leipzig commemorates the 9th of October 1989
    Gewandhausorchester Leipzig
    Soloist: Renaud Capuçon
    Conductor: Kurt Masur
Ludwig van Beethoven - Violin Romance No. 2 in F Major, Op. 50
Watch the full concert here: • Kurt Masur and the Gew...
On 9 October 1989, 70,000 people staged a non-violent demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states.
Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.

There's reasons why Beethoven is considered one of the greatest composer's throughout history. This piece is one of the reasons.

I am so glad that you state such an opinion to one of Beethoven's earlier works, which deserve far more esteem in their own right than they commonly receive.
I refer to such works, along with this, as the first two symphonies, the First Piano Concerto, and many of his early piano sonatas and early woodwind music.
This 2nd Romance was actually the first to be written, but I consider it superior to the other. It has a mature lyricism that suggests the Violin Concerto. Despite its vintage, it bears the opus number 50 and certainly sounds it.
This music directly speaks to one as very little of Mozart does by comparison, at least for me.

Beethoven is and will always be my favorite classical composer I'm studying this piece again. It's very difficult on multiple levels sustaining bow with 16 notes to a bar, bowing techniques, separation of notes, phrasings, color, ornamentation with turns and trills and intonation. This is superb!!

It's immaterial whether Beethoven is the best or not. If a concert hall plays the best of Beethoven and the hall next door anyone else, the Beethoven hall will fill first. He is universal, more so than any other composer.
