20 Years Peaceful Revolution - Leipzig commemorates the 9th of October 1989
    Gewandhausorchester Leipzig
    Conductor: Kurt Masur
Ludwig van Beethoven - “Egmont” Overture, Op. 84
Watch the full concert here: goo.gl/C7a9QS
On 9 October 1989, 70,000 people staged a non-violent demonstration calling for more freedom and democracy in the GDR. Thanks to the claim “Peaceful Revolution”, initiated by Kurt Masur as one of six prominent citizens of Leipzig, everything proceeded peacefully. That evening, the Gewandhausorchester played under his baton Brahms’ Second Symphony at the St. Nicolas Church. The following regular "Monday Demonstrations", which came to be described as the “Peaceful Revolution”, became a major milestone on the way to open the Berlin Wall one month later on November the 9th in 1989 and paving the foundations for the reunification of the two German states.
Exactly 20 years later, the Gewandhausorchester and Kurt Masur commemorate the beginning of the German reunification by presenting the same symphony at the same location.

No one writes music like The Master Beethoven. He has no time to waist like many of his contemporaries. He gets to the point right away. His themes are so precise, each notes seems to be woven one to another with so much easy. The ending has a crescendo that most composers only imagine a coda so brilliant, so fanfara. How much we owe to Beethoven.

Such a wonderful piece. Such a great example of how Beethoven can shift from dark to light, and back. The opening notes have such weight and gravitas, and never fail to move me deeply. He builds tension, then moves to sweetness and light. He really was the master of them all. This is a wonderful interpretation, with the sort of restraint in the pacing so necessary for this work.

It is 'incomplete!' Beethoven could not believe that 'someone can 'do something like that!' Lord Egmont! After 'the strong show!' Told Lord Orantjie! Make sure that they keep their promises, for our people! My head? Why do I have it? It was thrust upon me by the nature of my birth! Make sure that 'they keep the promises that we agreed!' And, for that? I will gladly give my head!

@@ekaterinazamyshliaeva4702 It seems you fail to understand. First, this piece of music is all about freedom, as the ouverture of a play about the legendary revolt of the Netherlands against Habsburg oppression. Second, KurtMasur, unlike probably any other conductor alive, really has struck a blow for freedom. Now, if that displeases you, that is your own affair. But this is not "politics" in your demeaning sense of the word. It is about justice and courage and what Beethoven and Dr.Masur both stand for.

Envidia sana de la cultura que emana en este vídeo. Maravilloso.

I have the recording of this piece by the same conductor and orchestra, but from 1974. I can only imagine how dreary Leipzig was then.

I am no scholar by any means, just someone who appreciates great music of all genres. I bought a wonder version of this (can't remember the orchestra or conductor) when I was 15 (I'm 60 now) and this performance is amazing. I've always been struck by the occasional resemblances from 8:52 on to The 1812 Overture, I've always wondered if Tsaichovsky didn't find some inspiration in this piece.

Mi ha commosso. Vedere un uomo cosi anziano che dirige un'orchestra e sentire la stupenda musica che ne esce.. si percepisce anche solo dal video (inquadrature ineccepibile) la perfezione dell'evento.
