Agreed! Yoakham nailed that angry-at-the-world sociopathic Doyle and Ritter (may he rest in peace) was so perfect as the caring, concerned gay friend. The entire cast was amazing, even Doyle's friends in this scene and you really came away feeling that these people and their problems were real.
Soooo off the cuff hilarious!!! An abusive alcoholic who is still likable enough to garner some sympathy and make you wonder what happened to him as a child. He wasn't born a monster.
I will NEVER get tired of watching Dwight Yoakum in Sling Blade! I've never seen a non actor do such a great job at acting. I can't stop watching this!
I agree Dwight is extremely good in this movie. It's almost like he's a natural Psycho. I dunno maybe he's got a bolt loose and this is norm after he has a few drinks.
I was in club bands in Alabama, Georgia, and TN for 30 years. I have seen that band scene play out in real life quite a few times. It is a masterpiece of a scene. There are A LOT of people like Doyle in the south..... every little town has 2 or 3 just like him.
@@andreagamer9146 he probably wouldn't actually hurt them badly other than psychologically. I had one friend in grade school that had an alcoholic father. When I first slept over at his house we came in at 3:30 pm and his dad was asleep. He told me if we woke his dad up he would throw the alarm clock at our heads. Another friend I had, his step dad shot his mother in their kitchen and killed her. So you never can tell. A lot of southern women get tired of it and go off. I know a woman that cooked a big skillet of food to boiling hot. Her husband came in drunk and hit her......she threw the pan of food directly into his face. He never bothered her again....even after he healed.....
Dwight went from being a sex symbol rock a billy icon to playing Doyle Hardgrave: one of the most iconic white trash scum bags in film history. Dwight is an artistic genius much like Robin Williams was versatile as comic and dramatic actor.
The way I see it, Doyle was the protagonist of this film. He had a dream of forming the most epic band of all time. All of the other characters were standing in the way of his vision.
I always loved how randy stared him down all the way out the door and Doyle looked at the floor and hes the only one that doesn't say a word. He was staring at him like...feeling froggy? Jump
Any actor who can make me HATE his character from the beginning of the film and carry that hatred through til the end gets my highest kudos...Yoakum totally nailed this! Agree, absolutely Oscar-worthy. Thank you, Dwight!
I saw this in the theater, and I distinctly remember this scene getting the best reaction from the crowd. I knew I'd remember seeing this great movie for the rest of my life.
What makes Dwight's performance so amazing and believable is that there are characters just like this in rural parts like the Midwest. I grew up near the Arkansas border and I knew a few cards just like Doyle. When they were drinking, they had fleeting moments where they'd be a decent human you could tolerate. Few more drinks in they'd become a tyrant with explosive outbursts. They'd preach their remorse two days later, and then do it again. Their circle would often have the two other drunks who were just as miserable. Usually, there'd be one who's timid and hangs around just because they have no one else to drink with, so they take the insults and the shoves. The more explosive they were, typically the weaker they were.
Doyle is hands down my all-time favorite movie villain. I've seen many horror movies, but none of them are as scary as him. There are thousands if not millions of men and women on this Earth right now who are just like him.
Goes to show most oscar judges have never seen a drunken outburst to the max. Doyles shouting reminds me of many who just blew up at any point, damn realistic I'd say.
The thing is, Dwight doesn't enjoy playing the villain in movies. He's actually a really nice guy in real life. He hates playing the ashole. But he's so goddamn good at it.
Isn’t that amazing that Billy Bob Thornton and Lucas Black starred in both Sling Blade and Friday Night Lights, and the villain was a well known country singer in both?
Michael Burke Im thinking it was improv, they probably told him to just get angry and let it flow. Could you imagine the set after he delivered this verbal abuse lol..
This is one of my favorite movies till this day. I watch this and laugh, learn and can relate when dealing with alcoholics. It's not funny but you laugh through your pain. I had my family watch it to teach them about the many different people in this world. Some who mean well but are slightly misguided or have difficulty balancing a healthy moral compass. It's not to blame the mentally ill but it surely expands the mind on what defines justice and injustice and who should receive it. Does the mentally unhealthy get a pass because they had good intentions. If it was your family how would you react. Wonderful and inspiring movie. Underrated indeed ❤🎉

Why cut out Frank pelting Doyle with everything but the kitchen sink? That was a great ending to the best scene in this great movie. Want to rid your house of unwanted guests, act like Doyle.
This scene shows how good of an actor Dwight Yokum is , you know your a good actor when people hate the role you play in this movie. Dwight should have gotten the academy award for the role he played in sling blade.
It's criminal that both Dwight and John Ritter were not recognized for their amazing work in this film.

Yeah, from what I hear about him, that character wasn't much of a stretch for him.
