    I just calked my trim and then saw this,. I didn't dare tell anyone I used left over napkins from fast food drive thru to fill the space in my trim, then I saw your video. I was sure there was some expensive special filler that I was supposed to stick in there. Learning as I go so really appreciate your tips. Thank you!

      Well you are right, you can use a backer rod from the hardware store to create a damn so caulk doesn't run down the wall as well. Also, cedar shims and cardboard have been known alternatives. 👍👍

      I know I've had my gun for 5 years. What's worse I didn't realize it had the puncturing pole. I've used a screwdriver and scissors this whole time. I've now learned to watch RUclips videos for every tool I have, tips and tricks. This video just showed me I've been doing it wrong all along including cutting the tip straight instead of an angle 🤦‍♂️

    I liked the toilet paper idea for filling in big gaps. I use either a spray bottle of water to keep my finger and the calk slightly wet before smoothing it out. For applying latex calk over tile: i go over the calked (and wiped off with a finger) area with a wet cloth to take of any extra calk that gets into areas beyond the calking bead area. Then I use a wet finger to go across the bead to make sure that the wet towel doesn't leave any traction lines from the weave pattern of the washcloth. It's always useful to see other people's ideas and procedures. Thanks!

    The last caulking i did had to be double teamed by myself and a friend! We were caulking for hours, it was a big job, but we kept nailing it till we got it pounded out, The wife wanted to call in a couple pros but after some convincing and seeing that we had adequate caulk for the job, she decided to let us have a go at it! My friend Started at one end with his caulk and me on the other end with my caulk! The wife was skeptical that we could get the job done to her standards but at the end of the day she cleaned up the mess, and was extremely happy how it turned out!

    I recently used expandable foam insulaltion to fill a huge gap behind a counter. Masking tape before filling the gap with foam. Allow to dry, then trim off with sharp knife before caulking. It came out pretty good.

    • @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
      @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer  2 года назад +3

      That's a risky one, low expansion is what you would want to help prevent super spreading of the gap as it can push the base off the wall. I have heard of this method, but I haven't tried it.

      @heathermelohnthereareno5505 4 года назад +9

      I use the very tip edge (where it is less than 1/2” wide) of damp yellow sponge (only yellow cause other colors may bleed). I just gently glide that edge tip across the bead similar to the way he used his finger and it seals it nice and clears any excess from the spot too. My father taught me this when I got my first home years ago. It makes a very nice even professional looking result every time.

    Forget the toilet tissue just do it the same way you did it but use a light hand when spreading the clock

    while we in the business know this, it's amazing how many people don't. I built a complex mantle piece for a customer when I was young and my tools/skills weren't yet creating flawless joints. But still, caulked normally and properly, the mantle would look great when painted. The customer said her neighbor would paint it and since I had the understanding that caulking was the painters job (which it really is) I didn't caulk it. Big mistake. When I came back a few months later for an unrelated job, I saw how wrong it looked..I was embarrassed because you could tell the customer didn't seem to feel one way or another about the mantle. It was painted red first of all (they were Asian) and the long vertical miters along the columns were noticeably open (I had used a crappy used craftsman table saw with a dull general purpose blade and again, I was a beginner). Various other places needed proper caulking as well. I would have caulked and re-painted the mantle for free. Since it was red though, and since there was no leftover paint, I would have had to pay for the paint myself because the customer had no interest in putting more money into the mantle. That I would not do. All I could do was try and explain that if it had been caulked and painted properly (and painted white, smh) it would have looked very different and very nice. This was all lost on the customer though so it has irked me ever since. To this day, whenever possible, I always caulk my own work. Especially on a mantle peice.

    Awesome caulk man. It’s a shame us with nice caulks have to refer to it as “caulking” because everyone’s so immature. We’re just trying to should them how to get the best caulk so it’s not too runny and sloppy. They gotta know because they always cut the tip of their caulk wrong. #caulkisntfunny

    Usually those kind of guns come with tip cutter but it doesn't cut too well deforming the tip, sharpers knife make a cleaner cutting. He's right about how much to cut, even though you make a straight and beautiful line of caulk you always have to apply pressure with your fingers or a wet rag in order to material go inside gap. When gap is wider you can use that technique of TP or towels always removing excess by cleaning with wet rags to avoid dust collection points.

      @@potatogrower Great news! Now you're a cauking pro...lol...,the damp cloth makes every caulking job look like a million bucks,and if you're not happy with your bead, simply wipe it off completely
      with a damp cloth while its fresh and start all over again.

    • @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
      @HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer  4 года назад +2

      Caulk immediately after install. This way you paint/primers go over the caulk to seal it with the wall colour.
