  • The 3D Burbot is a big softbait that started the series of 3D scanned lures collection of Savage Gear. The 3D burbot is an imitation of a real burbot, a fish that likes to hide under rocks or in cavities near the bottom during the day.
There are 3 models of this softbait, a 'small' one of 25 cm and 70 grams, a medium model of 36 cm and 210 grams (the softbait in the video) and the biggest model of 50 cm and 400 grams. The smallest model lends itself for casting and also dives a bit shallower than the two larger models.
The larger models sink gradually in a nosedive easily to a depth of 4 or 5 meters due to the shape of the head and how the leader exists the top of the head. These models lend themselves best for trolling. The 36 cm model can also be used for casting but not easily on shallow waters. In that sense, Savage Gear here follows the behavior of the real burbot that also likes to hang out in deeper and colder water. Fished at low speed and at lower water temperatures is where I think this softbait does best.
What stands out is the hypnotic tail action of the softbait that works already at lower retrieving casting or trolling speeds. The side fins wiggle slowly and at higher speed a bit more active. Halfway up the tail is a rattle chamber, it is not replaceable. The bait can be rigged in 2 ways, with the familiar line thru system or with a fixed clip release. The fixed eye sits just in front of the line thru tube and is sometimes somewhat sunk into the plastic of the softbait. Pressing a finger here on the plastic makes the eye visible for use.
The number of colors is limited to 6, most in somewhat darker color and black dots that somewhat resemble a burbot pattern. The softbait in the video is the color Blue Silver UV. Lately it seems Savage Gear is phasing out the current models, perhaps time for some new colors or an update to the model?
