    I recently finished building my own custom melting furnace for just shy of $40 USD and I found that the fuel costs for it are actually way lower than I thought. I melted like 2.5kg of aluminum for $1.50 of regular grilling charcoal. I was legitimately amazed
    And now I've got a dozen aluminum corn cobs because that's the only cheap thing I could find to cast bars in

It's the fun in doing all that plus the beautiful end result. I love just making ingots and I don't even have all the stuff yet to polish them as well as you do. Lots of fun for just a little bit of money, & then on top of that, you do have something that is worth something. I did some Aluminum cans using Live Oak wood (free around here) & a blower, & made me a bunch of cupcakes it was fun & is neat to have, I want to do some other metals some day like you are doing. I'm saving up metals now, maybe I'll just get a set up like yours, worth the money in gas just to make it easier, hotter & safer I'm sure. thanks for the uploads.

    • @MrRShoaf
      @MrRShoaf 4 года назад

      Cans in their raw form are a known alloy.
      A home made ingot is unknown.
      I would not be surprised if the cans were worth more than the ingot.
      Also, if you wanted to make a functional part, you might want an alloy that os stronger than the alloy for cans. Used pistons as an example are going to give you a lot stronger casting over cans.

    • @VerifyVeracity
      @VerifyVeracity 4 года назад

      @@MrRShoaf
      Yes I'm sure all you said it true. And if I do cast something special someday I'm sure it will not be anything that will need to be a pure exact alloy or pure aluminum. Just for fun, but if it makes me some money or a useful item that's great also. Thanks. take

    Hey bigstackD, whats your fav metal to melt and pour into bars? Copper is my personal fav. Also does nordic gold pour into molds well? If it does I'd like to see a nordic gold hatchet video.

    I’m really interested in getting a home foundry setup! Could I just hookup to the natural gas line that runs to my cemented back porch where I would be doing this? It was setup like that for running an outdoor grill on natural gas instead of propane. But would it work for fueling a foundry as well?

    My furnace burns wood with an old hairdryer for a forced air supply. I once put some coal in it and burned/melted out the bottom of my steel crucible!

    Another great video👍 Just wondering how long it took to melt the 1 kg of copper because only 2 dollars worth of gas seems very CHEAP. Usually I can only get may be 5 possibly 6 melts of copper on one 8.5 kg bottle. Do you get the same amount of melts on a single bottle?

    When you get time I think it would be really cool to chart cost of melted metal vs propane cost. Have one graph per metal type melted.

    First question is how long does each melt take? Second is if you used a larger forge, melting pot you could melt more at one time.Thus reducing cost.Third you get a thumbs up for wasting all that ice. When I melt Aluminum I pour it into the brick mode than remove the slag if needed. I melt sixty plus pounds of Aluminum at one time with a Modified Dakota fire pit and blower. Best video on the cost of melting so far.

    I was thinking just this morning about how much it cost in propane to melt the metals! You must have read my mind!🤪 Thanks for sharing 👍🇨🇦

      I live in Alaska where propane is about $2.89 per pound right now. With the smaller forge and burner I get about 200 lbs of aluminum from scrap per 5 lb bottle. Non-scrap aluminum is about $0.85 a lb here. It costs about $12 to fill a bottle and I make about $160 selling the aluminum.
      BTW, my main source of aluminum is cans (soda, beer, etc.) so it has a high loss and inefficient cost ratio. The small amounts of stuff like extruded and cast aluminum I get (still increases value turning it into ingots) makes it even more worth my while.
      And for those wondering, yes I remelt the can dross, but only once as it really isn't worth my time/money past that.
