This was a brutal breakdown and my hands feel like they have been through a grinder but after a long week of Breaking Melting and Editing its definitely all worth it. A touch under the 30KG mark of pure copper from this big motor which im pretty happy about as i guessed i would only get about 25KG. Now I know this is a super long video but i had well over 9 hours of footage i compressed down to 34 minutes. I hope you do enjoy the longer video today , Now sit back and take a load off for half an hour and check out this Scrapyard found Massive motor melt.

HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

@Júlio Carlo I'm in the US and with our economy right now is Insanely bizarre right now. Even so I wouldn't take the time nor spend the $. If the return is less then the output. Unless he has unlimited funds, and just does it as a hobby. That must be nice.
I had honestly never considered a hardening liquid metal as freezing, but now I don't know how I ever thought differently.
Imagine the complexities of life across the universe. There could be a lifeform that could litterally evaporate from the heat in front of us.
that is actually what it is doing lol. never thought of that myself
Any liquid to a solid state is called freezing, did you go to school?
@@goober-ll1wx Obviously that's what is happening on a molecular level, but people generally don't think about things as frozen unless they fall below the freezing temperature of water. Hence my comment acknowledging that bias. Don't be such a douchebag.

I know it's amazing and imagine how many bolsters you could make out of it that's the reason why I started getting into metal melting, I've melted down 2 miles worth at my estimate of copper for knife making and about a 1/4 of brass ahha

Hey BigStack! I used to work in a motor repair shop. The way we pulled the windings out of a motor that size was to use an air chisel to cut one of the ends off the winding, then use a flame wand to burn off all the varnish. The coils would just pull out of the other end. Lot less messy.
Yeah, but does a blow tourch even heat up the metall so much that the plastic melts ?
Nice tip. Would you heat the copper directly from the inside? Or heat the stator from the outside?
@@yaykruser You use a bigger torch if the little one does not work. you just have to get enough heat in there to decompose the varnish, it does not need to be red hot, just around 400C for the varnish and epoxy to vanish completely.

The irony of working in a foundry and then I come home and watch these all night... Lol.
It's literally irony
@@cricketthebeardie325 I get it, because iron(atomic number 26, also known as Fe) is a metal. And irony is the concept of utilizing language, that signifies the opposite, as a humorous device. By combining these two, you make use of word play, which is the witty exploitation of the meanings and ambiguities of words, especially in puns.
The result is a clever ‘pun’.
Thank you for posting this comment on the RUclips media platform for everyone to enjoy.
Sincerely,
John
@@cricketthebeardie325 My apologies, in my rush to get my point across, I forgot to elaborate why - or perhaps how - I found it witty.
It all began when I was five years of age. My mother and I - henceforth “we” - would always think up new ways to transfigure everyday words into peculiar variations of said words. Results were often ridiculous in nature and we’d resort to laughter upon the realisation that our concoction of words bore no meaning.
Though, through trial and error, I slowly began to comprehend the concept of irony and chucklesome nature behind it.
Hopefully my explanation could reinforce the concepts I inferred in my previous comment.
Sincerely,
John
@@cricketthebeardie325 Excuse the brisk follow-up. I made no effort to explain what a comment is.
A comment - in our context - is a linguistic device employed to spark interest and build dialogue in social interactions. The lack of comments often results in bland conversation and awkward undertones.
This isn’t to be confused with comments employed in computer science, however. Those are a different story.

You deserve all of your success. I'm blown away by this content. It is described by 'TvTropes' as "simple", however I think this is far from true. The formula for the videos is simple - Get something, chop it up, melt it down... But then when you really watch the content, it's carefully made to provide an entertaining yet informative experience. The inside jokes: the pups; the beers; the weird socks; the hidden food; Mr whippy and the random activities/props, all prove that these videos are thought out and purpose built for entertainment. Im impressed by the tech that went into the building of the electric motor. Very intricate windings.
This video brought back a lot of memories. I worked for my brother as an Electrician's helper and I collected all scrap coppers for 2 years and I saved around 1.5k lbs, and copper was $2.75/lb. when I sold them and made $4,065. BTW, I don't burn the insulation, I meticulously and patiently stripped them by hand using nothing but, my handy knife.
Thats surprisingly cheap. I though copper was expensive.
@@NarutoSSj6 it's currently around $4.50 USD!
Clean copper was $10/kg a few weeks ago!!!!! Crazy high. I was getting $8.50 for burnt copper

There's different grades of copper too.. Grades 3, 2, and 1.. The scale is based on how clean your copper is.. The last time I took copper back here in Detroit, it was $2.55/lb (pound) for grade #1... You got the most for grade #1... Grade #3 you got the least .. This was about 2 years ago.. & yes, I have heard that scrape prices have gone up
Thank you for giving your dogs a moment in the spotlight, they deserve it
I worked in a recycling yard when I left school and loved doing this sort of stuff and playing with the big machines, it was a great outlet for my adhd
A company I worked for used to buy these used motors all the time, they are super heavy-duty and most of the time can be still used or repaired for a lot cheaper than the cost of a new one. Some of the companies near me, especially Procter and Gamble, used to tear down entire process lines and just "junk" everything, so the resellers that bought up the entire line used to have all these motors and tanks and other stuff we'd buy used. Saved so much money.

If you ever take on a beast like this again, try cutting out front "crown", one where blue leads were and burning stator with your flamethrowers. Varnish and paper burn out and copper should come out very easily from the back. Should work on smaller motors too, down to about 3kW.
What would he gain by doing this?
@@nathank7006 It's a hell of a lot easier and faster to retrieve the copper from the motor. He gains time and energy.
@@ApprenticeGM and it would be cool to watch!
Yeah part of my job I do everyday is overhauling huge motors like this to extract all the copper. Cutting off the crown and throwing the stators into a fire pit and just letting them burn is definitely the way to go. One everything burns off of the copper, the copper will just slide out of the stator pretty easily
Yeah, was gonna say, wouldnt it be much easier to just cut that in half lengthwise and just split it apart to pluck out the wire instead of layer by layer?

Mr. Whippy doesn't take "no" for an answer! I really enjoyed the long breakdown here, lots of bits to this motor.
This was the stator.
Isn't there copper still to be processed from the armature?
No not in this motor, this motor has a squirrel cage rotor, and made up of silica iron, same material as the stator, and aluminum bars that are casted inside of the iron of the rotor.

@@kransurfing not really. that thing would go into a shredder and be separated after the fact on the other side in bits. Maybe in india or somewhere the labour is cheap but not a professional recycler.
There are insulators in each slot on the inside of the stator. They slide in. If you hammer those out you can remove the copper that is down in those slots instead of cutting off small segments and turning all that copper into a mess on your floor. In fact you started out correctly by removing all the copper at one end of the stator. And you removed the other end of the coils next but then you should have removed the retainers that hold the copper lines in the slots then you could recover all that copper in long lengths. Once you removed the insulators the copper should not be too difficult to pull out of the slots. You could use a hammer and punch to get one end out of the slot then just pull the remaining length of copper out of the slot. This would then make separating the stator layers a whole lot easier since the copper wire in the slots would not be holding them together. Just a suggestion.

Awesome and congratulations on reaching one million. You have inspired me to begin scrapping too. Slowly collecting what I need. Thanks.
I use a chipping hammer for the “careful” removal of concrete around plumbing. I never thought of using it to cut up copper like that
It is by sheer dumb luck that I found your channel, whether it’s RUclips algorithm, recommended views or Karma, I’m so glad I did. I can’t wait to watch this video tonight while enjoying my own frosty beverage. My laser temperature reader is on order!!
25:40 "Drink your copper."
"But... it has chunks in it.."
" *T H E N C H E W I T* "
Anyone else love standing/working/BEING inside their garage with the garage door open during a rain storm?
Thanks for adding some of the melting time info 😁 that's helpful.
I've been gone for a year. I see you have a second devil forge. Congrats! Thank you for doing your part cleaning up the environment and entertaining the masses. You still teach to this day, impressive.
Here was me thinking the 461kg motor was going to get you pretty close to the 1 tonne goal, clearly I didn't think it would only be the copper coming from it 😆 thank you for the big effort of the breakdown, melting and editing it truly was worth the effort and was a pleasure to watch 😋
Former worker at precious metal refinery.. this brings back memories.
This brought back memories. I had a friend that used to collect broken Electric motors and his yard was filled with them and other junk. He got me to clean his yard and gave me the motors for doing it. I got over 50 motors and broke them all down with just a hammer and chisel. It took me nearly a year to break them all down. lol
I screamed when the notification popped up 😂 love the melt of this motor and all ur videos❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️💞💞💞💞💞❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙💙💙
The consistency of thickness on those ingots, Very impressive. Could feel the flow... pours kept getting more consistent,
Most of those were almost identical.
Why were you making them so small? Not that I am judging, but you have a lot of metal to do, why not do multiple larger ingots to go through what you melted faster? Is it just a preference because it melts faster than it freezes?
@@kevinclarke8795 The mold was getting too hot. I’m assuming he only has one. It doesn’t melt faster than it freezes but while it’s freezing in the mold it’s also freezing in the crucible.
And since then you've put on another 340k. Congrats.
I really enjoy watching the metal freeze all the way through
I'm a bit sad that the case on that monster wasn't aluminum.
That would have put a good size dent in your goal to a ton.
You don't realize how primitive the electric motor is - until you take apart one of this size! Practically pre-historic in shape and proportion.
A great melt-down job - as usual! Thanks for the ride-along!
my guy you got the a dragons hoard.... super cool to see so much metal cast into different stuff
BigStackD
este é um bom metodo para divulgar ferramentas o apoio dos fabricantes deve ser maior ,trabalho espetacular eu adoro ver o metal liquido a mais de 1000 graus
BigStackD
this is a good method to promote tools the support of the manufacturers must be greater, spectacular work I love to see the liquid metal at more than 1000 degrees
I'm glad I found this. I've never seen this done before.
I like the brickwork on your driveway. I'm thinking I'd like to try something like this to cover my oily mess.
I'm a recycler/scrapper, and can safely say "That motor is massive"! lol!!! I'm not sure my current technique for removing the copper wire would work on it.
My personal best haul from a single device, was a 100 pound 440 Volt transformer, yielding 21 pounds of copper. I was pretty proud of that little beast, until I seen this video... 😂😂😂
“No one wants your silly ice cream” literally holds ice cream
I feel you pain disassembling the stator. I had a 500 pound motor that I scrapped out and had to extract the copper from. I finally decided on cutting the top and bottom pieces of the coils off like you did, but I was too lazy to take it all apart. I built a crude kiln out of a large propane torch and a piece of pipe, and put the stator in that until the steel was hot enough to melt the resin that holds the coils in. Once it melted, it was like a lubricant, and the copper slid out fairly easily with a pair of pliers.
At the end, you showed that you got 63 pounds of copper. I got just under 30 pounds of copper from my 500 pound motor. Have you found out what is inside the rotor?
I’m pretty sure it was just aluminium as my friend took it all and he put the rotors aside as the scrapyard pays him a bit extra when he brings in just a load of rotors. I have kept a couple here that have copper running through them but have not shown them yet👍🏻
My goodness. That was very labor intensive. Makes me proud that I subbed to you. Thanks for another great video
we love you bigstack! also how much was that motor?
The editing, recording would be as just has labour intensive as the actual work.
8:20 wait a minute
What's wrong with double top to 'suck' on. ;)
Liquid copper in daylight sure is a sight to behold. Beautiful metal
Metal floating just like gold ..!
